Abstract:Abstract Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have a wide range of applications because of their localized surface plasmon resonance properties. Femtosecond laser is considered to be an effective method for preparing Au NPs because of its characteristics of ultrashort irradiation periods and ultrahigh intensities. In this study, a novel method is proposed to produce an Au NP-attached substrate using the spatially and temporally shaped femtosecond laser. Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are designed to obtain the localized optical field enhancement, which leads to the femtosecond laser spatially reshaping, enabling the deposition of Au NPs by photoreduction on silicon substrates. The Au NPs prepared by this method exhibit morphological controllability and chemical stability, especially excellent spatial selectivity and uniformity, resulting in the tunable and stable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. Also, the temporally shaped femtosecond pulses are introduced to further increase the enhancement factors of the SERS. This method successfully achieves the controllable morphology synthesis and selective deposition of Au NPs on the substrate simultaneously, which provides a promising candidate for SERS substrates fabrication, and holds potential applications in optoelectronics, such as molecular detection and biosensors.

Abstract:Plasmonic surface lattice resonances (SLRs) supported by metallic nanoparticle (NP) arrays show diverse applications including nanolasers, sensors, photocatalysis, and nonlinear optics. However, to rationally fabricate high-quality plasmonic NP arrays with ultranarrow SLR line widths over large areas remains challenging. This article describes a general approach for the efficient fabrication of centimeter-scale inorganic NP arrays with precisely controlled NP size, composition, position, and lattice geometry. This method combines the processes of solvent-assisted soft lithography and in situ site-specific NP growth to reproducibly create many replicates of NP arrays without utilizing cleanroom and specialized equipment. For demonstration, we show that Au NP arrays exhibit ultranarrow SLRs with a line width of 4 nm and a quality factor of 218 toward the theoretical limit.
Large Range Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance of Ag Nanoparticles Films Dependent of Surface Morphology

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) have received enormous attention since it displays uniquely optical and electronic properties. In this work, we study localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) at different thicknesses and substrate temperatures of Ag NPs films grown by Laser Molecule Beam Epitaxy (LMBE). The LSPR wavelength can be largely tuned in the visible light range of 470 nm to 770 nm. The surface morphology is characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The average size of Ag NPs increased with the thickness increased which leading to the LSPR band broaden and wavelength red-shift. As the substrate temperature is increased from RT to 200 degrees C, the Ag NPs size distribution becomes homogeneous and particle shape changes from oblate spheroid to sphere, the LSPR band displays sharp, blue-shift and significantly symmetric. Obviously, the morphology of Ag NPs films is important for tuning absorption position. We obtain the cubic crystal structure of Ag NPs with a (1 1 1) main diffraction peak from the X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra. The high resolution TEM (HR-TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) prove that Ag NPs is polycrystal structure. The Ag NPs films with large range absorption in visible light region can composite with semiconductor to apply in various optical or photoelectric devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Fabrication of Gold-Based “Sphere-on-Plate” Hybrid Nanostructures with Dual Plasmonic Absorptions Covering Visible and Near-Infrared II Windows via the Volmer–Weber Growth Mode

Abstract:We report a synthetic strategy to create gold(Au)-based "sphere-on-plate" hybrid nanostructures (SPHNSs). The surface doping of plate-like Au seeds with Pt/Ag atoms is found to be crucial to increase the lattice spacing, inducing island-like deposition of Au atoms <i>via</i> the Volmer-Weber growth mode. The resulting products are featured with the morphology that quasi-spherical nanoparticles are scattered over the nanoplates. Due to the presence of two distinctly dimensioned particles in one entity, the current Au-based SPHNSs exhibit unique dual plasmonic absorptions, where the visible absorbance centered at 546 nm is related to the size of the anchored particles. Arising from such a plasmonic advantage, the Au-based SPHNSs exhibit enhancement in photothermal conversion under laser irradiations at the wavelengths of both 808 and 1064 nm. The current work offers a feasible route to fabricate noble metal hybrid nanostructures involving zero-dimensional (0D) and two-dimensional (2D) structures, which could work as promising materials for photothermal conversion.

Abstract:The Au ion implantation process has emerged as an effective and simple method to be utilized for the fabrication of opto-electronic materials and devices due to numerous fascinating features of Au nanoparticles such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), large third-order nonlinearity and a fast response time. In this paper, we describe the fabrication of a novel Au nanoparticle saturable absorber (Au NP-SA) by embedding the Au NPs into a SiO2 thin film using the ion implantation process, which shows excellent saturable absorption features due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Au NPs. A stable and high-quality pulsed laser with a repetition rate of 33.3 kHz and a single pulse energy of 11.7 nJ was successfully constructed with the Au NP-SA. Both the stable operation characteristic of the obtained Q-switched pulsed laser and the high repeatability of the fabrication process of the Au NP-SA were demonstrated. In addition, the simple feasibility and maturity of the ion implantation process allow for the plasmonic nanoparticles to be easily integrated into other types of opto-electronic materials and devices to further improve their performance, and shows immense potential for the production of wafer-level products.

Ordered Au Nanocrystals on a Substrate Formed by Light-Induced Rapid Annealing.

Abstract:Light-induced rapid annealing (LIRA) is a widely used method to modify the morphology and crystallinity of noble metal nanoparticles, and the nanoparticles generally evolve into nanospheres. It is rather challenging to form faceted Au nanocrystals on a substrate using LIRA. Here the formation of spatially ordered Au nanocrystals using a continuous wave infrared laser is reported, assisted by a metamaterial perfect absorber. Faceted Au nanocrystals in truncated-octahedral or multi-twinned geometries can be obtained. The evolution of morphology and crystallinity of the Au nanoparticles during laser annealing is also revealed, where the crystal grain growth and the surface melting are shown to play key roles in nanocrystal formation. The evolution of morphology also gives the freedom of tuning the absorption spectrum of the metamaterial absorber. These findings provide a novel way for tailoring the morphology and crystallinity of metallic nanoparticles and may pave the way to fabricate refined nano-devices in many potential applications for optics, electronics, catalysis, surface-chemistry and biology.

Abstract:By changing the ratios of two cationic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), irregular quasi-spherical AuNPs, popcorn-shaped AuNPs, ricepaper pith shaped AuNPs and the spinous-like Au nanostructures were synthesized via a convenient seed-mediated method. The composition of the as-prepared uniform Au nanostructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The differences in shape and kinetics mechanism were well explained by morphological changes arising from using different ratios of the two surfactants. Systematical analysis revealed that the generation of Au nanostructures with different shapes, including different degrees of curvature of the tips and the differences in shape strongly depended on controlling the ratios of the two surfactants which further affect their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties in both visible and near-infrared regions. Moreover, the spinous-like Au nanostructures showed obvious surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity for crystal violet (CV) dye, which implied that the irregular quasi-spherical AuNPs, popcorn-shaped AuNPs, rice paper pith shaped AuNPs and the spinous-like Au nanostructures could be used in applications such as electronics, catalysis, and imaging.
Gold Nanopillar Arrays As Biosensors Fabricated by Electron Beam Lithography Combined with Electroplating

Abstract:We report our work on the development of subwavelength gold pillar arrays as local surface plasmonic (LSP) resonators for sensor applications. These arrays are fabricated by electron beam lithography combined with electroplating. The conical shape, instead of flat one, on the top of Au pillars, induced by uneven current density in the plating, may affect the LSP resonance (LSPR). This paper aims to carry out a systematic study of LSPR behavior in nanopillar arrays with both flat and conical shapes on the top, trying to prove the feasibility of the developed nanoprocess. Both numerical simulations by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and experimental characterization on fabricated LSP resonators for reflectance spectra were carried out. Our experiments indicate that the fabricated nanopillar arrays in Au demonstrate the promising capability of refractive index sensing with sensitivity of 270 nm/refractive index unit. FDTD simulation of electric field density in the gap between pillars reveals the correlation between the resonant absorption of the incident light and the standing waves of localized surface plasmon polaritons in the gaps of the pillar array, despite the conical shape of the pillars. Moreover, it was discovered that the resonant absorption becomes stronger when the light incident angle is increased. The proposed nanoprocess for pillar arrays should possess great prospects for manufacturing Au pillars with high aspect ratio for achieving higher sensitivity at an economical cost.

Abstract:In this paper, a three-layer structure of silver particle (AgNP)-dielectric-metal is proposed and constructed based on the characteristics of AgNPs that can excite LSPR (Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance) in free space. In order to overcome the problem of AgNPs easily oxidizing in the air, this paper synthesizes AgNPs using the improved Tollens method and effectively suppresses the coffee-ring effect by changing the solution evaporation conditions, so that the distribution of AgNPs in the deposition area is relatively uniform. The structure proposed in this paper takes advantage of the flexibility of nanoparticle application. The AgNPs deposited on the dielectric layer can effectively localize energy and regulate the LSPR of the device well. The structure can not only achieve precise regulation of the LSPR resonance peak of AgNPs but also can be used as a SERS substrate.

Site-selective growth and plasmonic spectral properties of L-shaped Janus Au-Ag gold nanodumbbells for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Abstract:Ligand-mediated interface control has been broadly applied as a powerful tool in constructing asymmetric multicomponent nanoparticles (AMNP), and induces the anisotropic growth with fine-tuning morphology, composition, plasmonic property and functionality. As a new kind of AMNP, the synthesis of Janus Au-Ag nanoparticles with tunable negative surface curvature is still a challenge. Here, we demonstrate that the synergistic surface energy effects between gold nanodumbbells (Au NDs) with a negative surface curvature and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) can direct the site-selective growth of anisotropic silver domains on gold nanodumbbells (Au NPs). By adjusting the 4-MBA concentration-dependent interfacial energy, the Au NPs could be continuously tuned from dumbbell-like core–shell structures, to L-shaped Janus, and then rod-like core–shell structures with directional and asymmetric spatial distributions of resizable Ag domains by site-selective growth. Based on the calculation results of discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method, it has been found that the Au L-shaped Janus NPs with Ag island domains created polarization orientation-dependent plasmonic extinction spectra and hot spots around the negatively curved waist and Ag domains. The L-shaped Janus Au NPs exhibited significantly plasmonic spectrum properties with four apparent LSPR peaks that cover from visible to near-infrared range and higher surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity compared with the original Au NDs. The best SERS enhancement factor of 1.41 × 10 7 was achieved. This synergistic surface energy effect-based method involving the asymmetric growth of silver coating on gold nanoparticles with negatively curved surface presents a new method to design and fabricate nanometer optical devices based on asymmetric multicomponent nanoparticles.

Abstract:Monometallic nanostructures have gained tremendous research attentions owing to the ability of supporting surface plasmons and improving devices performance. However, the relatively inflexible localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption peaks restrict the further development of monometallic plasmonics and relevant applications. Herein, the bimetallic Au-Ni nanoparticles (NPs) with an ∼ 325 nm LSPR absorption peak were fabricated and decorated on polar GaN microwire (MW) array PDs via thin film thermal annealing approach. Compared with monometallic Au and Ni NPs, the bimetallic Au-Ni NPs can not only modulate LSPR absorption peak but also enhance absorptivity. Moreover, the bimetallic NPs/GaN MW array PDs demonstrated the maximum increase in responsivity than bare GaN under the resonance wavelength of 325 nm. The improvement in bimetallic NPs devices is correlated with the stronger light absorption, scattering and hot electron transfer at the GaN interface. This work presents a simply valid method for preparing the bimetallic Au-Ni NPs with tunable LSPR absorption peak, which can be helpful for realizing the energy-efficient optoelectronic device applications in most functional fields.

Abstract:Laser interference lithography is applied to fabricate large-area plasmonic nanostructures. This approach has the advantages of being non-contact process in air and able to achieve large-area and maskless nanolithography at a high speed with low system investment. Single layer Au or Ag noble metallic thin film and Ag/Au,Ag/Ni or Au/Ni bimetallic layer thin films are patterned into nano-dot, nano-rod and nano-nut arrays by laser interference lithography. Plasmonic effects of the fabricated metallic nanostructures are studied. Tunable and multi-peak surface plasmon resonances of these nanostructures can be obtained, which have potential applications in solar cells, bio-sensing and photonic circuits.

Abstract:Photoreduction of metallic nanoparticles can been used for localized and deterministic synthesis of nanostructures required for various applications. Specifically, in-situ photoreduction of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is a facile fabrication route that enables the fabrication of nanoplasmonic substrates. In the current work, we demonstrate an approach to fabricate hybrid plasmonic substrates using in-situ photoreduction of AgNPs within gold nanoapertures. The approach involves the top-down approach to fabricate NAs followed by a site specific synthesis of AgNPs within the NAs. Furthermore, we use dark-field imaging to monitor and understand the photoreduction within the gold NAs in real time. We demonstrate that a careful selection of experiment parameters aid to synthesize the AgNPs within NAs and the scattered light intensity can be used to map the charactereistics of the formed AgNPs. The illumination time, laser power and AgNO3 concentration can be used to tune the AgNPs characteristics. The demonstrated strategy for realizing hybrid plasmonic substrates can be used for the fabrication of substrates for SERS based sensors, enhancing of fluoroscence of molecules, and photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The remarkable capabilities of 2D plasmonic surfaces in controlling optical waves have garnered significant attention. However, the challenge of large-scale manufacturing of uniform, well-aligned, and tunable plasmonic surfaces has hindered their industrialization. To address this, we present a groundbreaking tunable plasmonic platform design achieved through magnetic field (MF) assisted ultrafast laser direct deposition (MAPLD) in air. Through precise control of metal nanoparticles (NPs), with Cobalt (Co) serving as the model material, employing a magnetic field (MF), and fine-tuning ultrafast laser parameters, we have effectively converted coarse and non-uniform NPs into densely packed, uniform, and ultrafine NPs(~3nm). This revolutionary advancement results in the creation of customizable plasmonic 'hot spots,' which play a pivotal role in Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors. The profound impact of this designable plasmonic platform lies in its close association with plasmonic resonance and energy enhancement. When the plasmonic nanostructures resonate with incident light, they generate intense local electromagnetic fields, thus vastly increasing the Raman scattering signal. This enhancement leads to an outstanding 2 to 18-fold boost in SERS performance and unparalleled sensing sensitivity down to 10-10 M. Notably, the plasmonic platform also demonstrates robustness, retaining its sensing capability even after undergoing 50 cycles of rinsing and re-loading of chemicals. Moreover, this work adheres to green manufacturing standards, making it an efficient and environmentally friendly method for customizing plasmonic 'hot spots' in SERS devices. Our study not only achieves the formation of high-density, uniform, and ultrafine nanoparticle arrays on a tunable plasmonic platform but also showcases the profound relation between plasmonic resonance and energy enhancement. The outstanding results observed in SERS sensors further emphasize the immense potential of this technology for energy-related applications, including photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and clean water, propelling us closer to a sustainable and cleaner future.

Abstract:In this paper, a new method for preparing a nanohole surface based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is proposed. In the proposed method, a layer of gold film is sputtered onto the upper and lower surfaces of porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) by ion sputtering to obtain the composite structure of Au/AAO/Au (Metal-Media-Metal, MIM) periodic hole array. The periodic plasma excitation conditions and coupling of the nanohole array are deduced using Maxwell's equations to obtain the locally enhanced surface plasma wave. Afterward, the composite structure is irradiated with a nanosecond laser with a working wavelength of 532 nm to excite the surface plasmon. Simulation results show that Au/AAO/Au (MIM) can excite the surface plasmon under laser induction, and the preparation of nanoholes is realized through experiments. The nanohole array produced by surface plasmon can be used to increase the specific surface area. For some biosensors with special properties, such as microcantilever, enzyme, and other biosensors, a large surface area is required without changing their chemical stability and mechanical strength to increase the detection sensitivity.

Abstract:This work fabricates well‐ordered dual‐Au‐nanoholes with the tip gap of ≈90 nm on a microsphere‐lens‐array (MLA/2‐AuNHs) by incident‐angle‐dependent photonic nanojet ablation. The MLA/2‐AuNHs structure facilitates multiple optical regulation promoting Raman scattering as a flexible SERS substrate. The polarization‐dependent response highlights the Raman signals by differential spectra eliminating background noise, enabling ultrasensitive detection down to 10−11 m . High‐efficient fabrication of well‐ordered nanostructures on flexible substrates is a challenge to surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for analytical fingerprinting trace‐detection. In this work, a laser parallel nanofabrication method is reported via incident‐angle‐dependent photonic nanojet ablating Au film on the bottom surface of microsphere‐lens‐array (MLA), for combination with formed dual Au‐nanoholes (MLA/2‐AuNHs) as the flexible SERS substrates. The process parameters, i.e., pulsed laser energy, MLA diameter, Au film thickness, and laser incident angle, are optimized for high finish‐quality of dual‐AuNHs with a diameter of ≈875 nm and a tip gap of ≈90 nm. The SERS substrate demonstrates the limit of detection down to 10−11 M for 4‐nitrobenzenethiol molecules by the multiple optical regulations, including self‐aligned focusing to the hotspots and directional antenna, the strongly localized surface plasmon resonances, and optical whispering‐gallery modes for resonance energy transfer. The flexible PDMS film supporting the rigid MLA holds the SERS performance of MLA/2‐AuNHs with high flexibility. Moreover, the MLA/2‐AuNHs SERS substrate exhibits differential responses to orthogonally polarized excitation, by which the background noises can be eliminated to improve the Raman spectrum. The present work opens new opportunities to fabricate dielectric‐metal flexible SERS substrates by laser parallel nanofabrication via MLA for Raman trace detection.

Abstract:For noble metals, such as gold (Au) and silver (Ag), it is well-known that surface plasmons of their nanocrystals have significant spatial confinement and propagation loss due to the strong damping effect and the scattering between plasmon and phonon. For noble metal nanostructures, they are usually titled "plasmonic nanostructure" in many reports. Based on the resonance effect of surface plasmon, the electromagnetic field can be localized in the subwavelength scale, which induces a booming new field of nanophotonics. Among the various nanostructures, Au nanostructures have received extensive attention both in fundamental research and technological fields due to their unique localized surface plasmon characteristics. The characteristics include strong optical extinction, near-field enhancement, and far-field scattering. By changing either the morphological parameters or the surrounding medium of nanostructures, the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Au nanostructures can be tuned in a large spectra region from visible to near infrared (Vis-NIR) wavelength. Corresponding to the experimental research, there are several numerical techniques that enable modeling the optical characteristics of Au nanostructures in different shapes and assemblies. The most popular technique is the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method for modeling various nanostructure and nanoscale optical devices. The accuracy of the computational models has been proven by reliable experimental data. In this review, we focused on Au nanostructures of different morphologies, such as nanorods, nanocubes, nanobipyramids and nanostars. Then combined with FDTD simulations, we described the effect of morphological parameters and surrounding medium on the SPR property of Au nanostructures. Several coupled Au nanostructures were discussed with emphasis. More and more achievements indicated that surface plasmon effect are promising in many technical fields. In the last part, we summarized some typical applications of plasmonic Au nanostructures, such as high sensitivity for sensors, hot electron effects for photothermal conversion and photoelectric devices, as well as plasmonic nanolaser.

A method for the controllable fabrication of optical fiber-based localized surface plasmon resonance sensors

Abstract:Optical fiber-based Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (OF-LSPR) biosensors have emerged as an ultra-sensitive miniaturized tool for a great variety of applications. Their fabrication by the chemical immobilization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the optic fiber end face is a simple and versatile method. However, it can render poor reproducibility given the number of parameters that influence the binding of the AuNPs. In order to develop a method to obtain OF-LSPR sensors with high reproducibility, we studied the effect that factors such as temperature, AuNPs concentration, fiber core size and time of immersion had on the number and aggregation of AuNPs on the surface of the fibers and their resonance signal. Our method consisted in controlling the deposition of a determined AuNPs density on the tip of the fiber by measuring its LSPR signal (or plasmonic signal, Sp) in real-time. Sensors created thus were used to measure changes in the refractive index of their surroundings and the results showed that, as the number of AuNPs on the probes increased, the changes in the Sp maximum values were ever lower but the wavelength shifts were higher. These results highlighted the relevance of controlling the relationship between the sensor composition and its performance.
Fabrication of a Au–polystyrene sphere substrate with three-dimensional nanofeatures for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Abstract:Methods for fabricating three-dimensional nanofeature arrays for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates were explored by combining the self-assembly of nanoscale polystyrene (PS) spheres with subsequent Au film ion sputter coating modulation. The substrate's nanoscale hot-spot features were controlled using the Au coating film thickness regulation and focused ion beam (FIB) nano-patterning regulation methods. Scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy were employed to analyze the substrate morphology and the enhancement mechanism of the three-dimensional SERS substrate. PS microspheres with diameters of 151nm and 360nm were coated with Au layers of different thicknesses ranging from 10nm to 270nm. The configuration of the Au–PS spheres can be regulated to hexagonal close packing with nanoscale V-shaped slits with a 10–20nm gap pattern. Nanoscale Au particles and clusters with a clear outline covered the surface of the PS spheres, in which the multiple-scale structures increase the specific surface area of the SERS-active substrate. Nanoscale cracks formed on the smaller Au–PS spheres with a diameter of 151nm, which also exhibited strong SERS activity. The substrate surface temperature regularly increased after Au coating, and the thermal expansion coefficient difference and PS glass transition properties were studied to explain the Au–PS spheres nanofeature configuration development. The fabricated Au–PS spheres SERS feature is a type of three-dimensional and highly ordered array, which can show Raman scattering characteristics by providing a SERS enhancement factor of greater than 107.

Abstract:When gold nanoparticles are in close proximity, their plasmons interact to create hybridized plasmon modes. The interaction between gold nanorods (AuNRs) and spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNSs) is particularly intriguing due to the anisotropic shape of AuNRs, which results in two distinct plasmon modes: longitudinal and transverse. These plasmon modes interact differently with the plasmon of AuNSs depending on their relative positions. We investigate the influence of excitation light polarization on these plasmon couplings. Experimentally, we assemble AuNR@AuNS core@satellite nanoassemblies and measure dark-field (DF) scattering spectra for individual nanoassemblies with varying polarization angles of incident light. We find it crucial to spatially block part of the polarized light before it enters the DF condenser to maintain pure polarization at the sample in DF microscopy. The obtained scattering spectra indicate that longitudinal plasmon coupling is most effectively induced by light polarized approximately along the long axis of the AuNR. Surprisingly, transverse plasmon coupling does not exhibit a strong preference for polarization in the transverse direction. Finite-difference time-domain simulations reveal that quadrupole plasmon modes of AuNSs are mixed in the transverse plasmon coupling, weakening its directionality, particularly when the AuNSs are positioned off-center on the side of the AuNR. This slight reduction in symmetry also causes the imperfect alignment of light polarization with the long axis of the assembly for longitudinal plasmon coupling. Our findings provide a fundamental understanding of light-nanoassembly interactions, establishing a firm basis for the development of optically tunable photonic devices.
