Abstract:In the present study, a novel approach for the elimination of emerging pollutants through an advanced oxidation process has been developed by combining near ultraviolet (NUV) irradiation with an iron-citrate complex (Fe(III)-Cit) to overcome the defects of the traditional Fe(III)/sulfite system and enhance the activation of sulfite in a neutral aqueous solution. The performance of this system was studied using metronidazole (MTZ) as the target pollutant, and the impact of operational conditions such as initial pH, Fe(III)-Cit complex concentration, sulfite dose, metronidazole concentration and dissolved oxygen were studied. The rate constant of MTZ degradation at natural pH (7.0 ± 0.2) by the Fe(III)-Cit/sulfite/NUV system is over 12.72-times and 13.25-times higher than the sulfite/NUV and Fe(III)-Cit/NUV individual binary systems. The effectiveness of the system was further examined in various real water matrices. The latter proved to be effective in the following order: groundwater > ultra-pure water > > seawater, revealing that it was very effective in the former. Chemical probe experiments indicated that sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals were the principal reactive oxygen species involved in the photodegradation of MTZ. Additionally, dissolved oxygen played a crucial role in the reaction. MTZ degradation products were determined by HPLC/MS, leading to the identification of nine different by-products and the proposal of possible degradation pathways. Although further studies are required to better understand this system, this work paves the way for the application of activated sulfite-based processes for environmental remediation without pH adjustment, offering an alternative to the use of conventional oxidants.

Degradation of Nitrobenzene in Wastewater by Gamma-Ray Irradiation

Abstract:The degradation of nitrobenzene( NB) by gamma-ray irradiation was studied. The influences of dose rate and initial NB concentration were investigated in details. At a dose rate of 55 Gy/min, the degradation kinetics was pseudo-first-order at NB concentrations from 0.2 mmol/L to 4.0 mmol/L, At an initial NB concentration of 0.8 mmol/L, the degradation of NB at various dose rates also followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Dissolved oxygen was found to have a positive effect on NB degradation. The degradation products were identified as nitrophenol, nitrosobenzene, and hydroquinone, and so on. Based on the product analysis, possible degradation pathways of nitrobenzene were proposed.

Abstract:The presence of sulfonamide antibiotics in aquatic environments has received increasing attention in recent years. Sulfadiazine (SD), a widely used heterocyclic sulfonamide pharmaceutical, has entered into the receiving water body. In this paper, gamma rays are used to irradiate samples of sulfadiazine antibiotics-containing wastewater. The results demonstrate that SD can be effectively degraded by irradiation, but the mineralization degree of SD (in terms of TOC) is not as efficient as the SD degradation. The addition of Fe2+ can significantly enhance the SD degradation and mineralization through the generation of hydroxyl radical by catalytic decomposition of H2O2 from water radiolysis. Ion chromatography analysis indicates that sulfate ions (SO4 2−) and formate (HCOO−) are the main intermediate products. Gamma irradiation is a promising technology for removing low-concentration antibiotics from water and wastewater.

(MNZ) is a mutagenic compound that can cause public health (i.e., the emergence of multiresistant bacteria) and environmental impacts (i.e., species selective pressure) when released to the environment. This compound (10 mg.L −1 solution) was treated by different methods (ultrasonic irradiation—US, ultraviolet light irradiation—UV, hydrogen peroxide—H 2 O 2 , ozonation—O 3, and peroxonium—H 2 O 2 /O 3 ) to assess their degradation efficiency under different pHs. The MNZ degradation efficiency was also assessed by using UV and UV/H 2 O 2 /O 3 associated with heterogeneous catalysis of TiO 2 nanoparticles functionalized in polyurethane macroporous structure (TiO 2 @PU). Physical methods (i.e., US and UV) were less efficient than non-catalytical chemical methods to degrade MNZ, where both classes of methods showed degradation efficiency dependent on the pH solution. UV/H 2 O 2 /O 3 /TiO 2 @PU was the most efficient and faster method to degrade MNZ without pH dependency (degradation efficiency > 97% in 10 min). Furthermore, UV/H 2 O 2 /O 3 /TiO 2 @PU promotes enhanced free radical production and a high O 3 mass transfer, dismissing the need for pH adjustment and further nanocatalyst separation and allowing the reuse of the supported catalyst (which makes treatment of wastewater more feasible). Therefore, the UV/H 2 O 2 /O 3 /TiO 2 @PU process is an effective method for MNZ antibiotic abatement.

Abstract:Industrial wastewaters containing 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), a widely used chemical additive, usually cannot be treated properly by conventional biological methods, thus cause an environmental risk. Ionizing radiation was proposed as a method for abatement of several refractory pollutants from water. The paper investigated MBT degradation using irradiation technology. The decomposition kinetics was described, and the transformation and the change of biodegradability were discussed. The results of gamma radiation experiments on MBT-containing aqueous solutions indicated that reactive radicals resulting from water radiolysis effectively degrade MBT and improve the biodegradability of the solutions. At a 20mg/L MBT concentration, the removal of 82% was achieved at the absorbed dose of 1.2kGy. The results of specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) test showed that MBT was decomposed into biodegradable products, after irradiation at 20kGy. Radicals attacked the sulfur atoms of the studied molecule leading to the release of sulfate ions, but the mineralization of organic carbons was rather weak. Initial concentration significantly affected the degradation efficacy of MBT by gamma radiation.
Nitrate Enhanced Sulfamethoxazole Degradation by 222 Nm Far-UVC Irradiation: Role of Reactive Nitrogen Species

Abstract:The application of 222 nm far-UVC irradiation for degrading organic micropollutants in water shows promise. Nitrate (NO3 -), found in nearly all water bodies, can significantly impact the performance of 222 nm far-UVC-driven systems. This work was the first to investigate the effect of NO(3)( - )on sulfamethoxazole (SMX) photodegradation at 222 nm, finding that NO3 - significantly enhances SMX degradation in different dissociated forms. Besides the hydroxyl radical (center dot OH), reactive nitrogen species (RNS) also played important roles in SMX degradation. With increasing NO3 - concentration, the RNS contribution to SMX degradation decreased from 25.7 to 8.6% at pH 3 but increased from 1.5 to 24.7% at pH 7, since the deprotonated SMX with electron-rich groups reacted more easily with RNS. The transformation mechanisms of SMX involving isomerization, bond cleavage, hydroxylation, nitrosation, and nitration processes were proposed. 15N isotope labeling experiments showed that the RNS-induced nitrated products even became the major products of SMX in the 222 nm far-UVC/NO3 - system at pH 7 and exhibited a higher toxicity than SMX itself. Further research is necessary to avoid or eliminate these toxic byproducts. This study provides valuable insights for guiding the utilization of 222 nm far-UVC for treating antibiotics in NO3 --containing water.

Abstract:Harmful algal blooms have long been an issue worldwide owing to their adverse effects on drinking water treatment processes and drinking water quality. This study was conducted to investigate the removal of Microcystis aeruginosa in water by gamma irradiation. The effects of pH values and various additives (CH3OH, thiourea and NO3-) on M. aeruginosa removal and changes in antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation were also investigated. The results revealed that 98% of the M. aeruginosa were removed on the 5th day after gamma irradiation at a dose of 9 kGy. Based on SEM observations, M. aeruginosa cells were injured by gamma irradiation. However, the presence of CH3OH, thiourea and NO3- attenuated the M. aeruginosa injury process. The removal of M. aeruginosa was found to be affected by solution pH, with higher removal efficiency occurring under acidic conditions than neutral or alkaline conditions. Carotenoids and phycocyanin photosynthetic pigment contents in M. aeruginosa cells were adversely affected by gamma irradiation, with their concentrations decreasing with increasing doses of gamma irradiation. Low gamma irradiation doses enhanced the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) in M. aeruginosa cells, while the activity of SOD and POD decreased with high doses. The Degradation, Biodegradability and Toxicity Evaluation of Sulfamethazine Antibiotics by Gamma Radiation

Abstract:Abstract This study evaluated gamma radiation-enhanced sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation, which belongs to the heterocyclic sulfonamides, in different conditions in aqueous solution. The results showed that gamma irradiation could increase the SMT removal in aqueous solution, and the SMT degradation kinetic follow the modified pseudo-first-order kinetic. The degradation rate was nearly 95% at the absorbed dose of 4 kGy. The removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) could be also induced. When the radiation dose was 5 kGy, the removal rates were only about 6.8% and 10.5% for TOC and TN, respectively. Some ions including HCOO−, CH3COO− and SO4 2− released during SMT degradation were studied. The biodegradability and toxicity of intermediate products of the SMT degradation were also proposed in this experiment. The biodegradability of the SMT can be improved by the intermediate products of SMT degradation at the radiation dose of 1, 2 and 5 kGy. Gamma radiation could be used as a pretreatment technology before the biodegradation process of pharmaceutical waste water.

Abstract:In present study, the treatment of real pharmaceutical wastewater from an erythromycin (ERY) production factory by gamma irradiation was investigated. Results showed that a variety of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), involving MLSB, tet, bla, multidrug, sul, MGEs and van genes and plentiful 9 bacterial phyla were identified in the raw wastewater. In addition to ERY, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline (TC) were also identified with the concentration of 3 order of magnitude lower than ERY. Results showed that the abatement of ARGs and antibiotics was much higher than that of antimicrobial activity and COD. With the absorbed dose of 50 kGy, the removal percentage of ARGs, ERY, antimicrobial activity and COD was 96.5-99.8%, 90.0%, 47.8% and 10.3%, respectively. The culturable bacteria were abated fast and completely at 5.0 kGy during gamma irradiation. The genus Pseudomonas was predominant in raw wastewater (56.7%) and its relative abundance decreased after gamma irradiation, to 1.3% at 50 kGy. With addition of peroxymonosulfate (PMS, 50 mM), the antimicrobial activity disappeared completely and ERY removal reached as high as 99.2% at the lower absorbed dose of 25 kGy. Ionizing radiation-coupled technique is a potential option to treat pharmaceutical wastewater for reduction of antibiotics, ARGs and antimicrobial activity.

Abstract:This study focused on the degradation of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (TAX) in aqueous solutions by gamma-irradiation. The influences of initial sulfamethoxazole concentration, solution pH, various additives (H2O2, CH3OH, humic acid and thiourea) and absorbed dose on sulfamethoxazole degradation were investigated. At a sulfamethoxazole concentration of 26.4 mg L-1 and an absorbed dose of 1.1 kGy, the extent of sulfamethoxazole degradation was 99 %. The degradation reaction of sulfamethoxazole followed first-order like kinetics. Added hutnic acid or 0.3 % H2O2 enhanced the sulfamethoxazole degradation, while CH3OH, 0.9% H2O2 and thiourea additives significantly inhibited sulfamethoxazole degradation. The degradation efficiency was higher under acidic conditions than in neutral or alkaline media. The solution pH and total organic carbon became lower as the absorbed dose increased. The possible degradation pathway was proposed.

Abstract:The radiation-induced removal of sulphadiazine (SD) belonging to the heterocyclic sulphonamides pharmaceuticals was investigated by gamma irradiation at different conditions in laboratory scale. The influence of initial SD concentrations, pH values, O-2 and N-2 on SD degradation was determined. The experimental results showed that gamma-ray irradiation was efficient for removing SD from wastewater. SD could be completely removed at an absorbed dose of 10kGy. The degradation kinetics of SD conformed to the first-order kinetic equation. When SD concentration was in the range of 10-30mg/L, the dose constant (d) decreased with an increasing initial SD concentration. The mineralization of SD, in terms of total organic carbon removal, was not obvious at a low absorbed dose, but it increased to more than 75% at 100kGy. The biodegradability of SD was improved after irradiation, suggesting that irradiation could be used as a pretreatment technology for treating SD-containing wastewater. The possible degradation pathway of SD was tentatively proposed based on the analysis of intermediate products during gamma irradiation.

Abstract:The gamma-irradiation-induced degradation of antibiotics sulfamethazine (SMT) in sludge mixture was investigated. The results showed that gamma irradiation was effective in removing SMT from contaminated sludge mixture. With an initial SMT concentration of 10mg/L, the SMT removal efficiency reached 65% at 1.0kGy and increased to 98% at 2.5kGy. The SMT degradation rate was lower in the sludge mixture than that in pure water. The pseudo first-order kinetic constant of SMT degradation in pure water was 2.3 times higher than that in the sludge mixture. Analysis of the SMT concentrations in the supernatant and sludge residue revealed that 93–97% of SMT was observed in the supernatant and the detected SMT in the sludge residue was 168±29, 147±4, and 87±9μg/g dry weight following irradiation at doses of 0, 1.0 and 2.5kGy, respectively. The sludge solubilization slowly increased from 1.5% to 3.5% with increasing dose from 1.0 to 5.0kGy, while the sludge activity decreased by 85–98%. Addition of H2O2 exhibited a synergetic effect on the degradation of SMT, with the pseudo first-order kinetic constant k increasing by around 25%.
Gamma-ray Irradiation As an Effective Method for Mitigating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria and Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Aquatic Environments.

Abstract:The prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWTPs) has emerged as a significant environmental concern. Despite advanced treatment processes, high levels of ARGs persist in the secondary effluent from MWTPs, posing ongoing environmental risks. This study explores the potential of gamma-ray irradiation as a novel approach for sterilizing antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and reducing ARGs in MWTP secondary effluent. Our findings reveal that gamma-ray irradiation at an absorbed dose of 1.6 kGy effectively deactivates all culturable bacteria, with no subsequent revival observed after exposure to 6.4 kGy and a 96-h incubation in darkness at room temperature. The removal efficiencies for a range of ARGs, including tetO, tetA, blaTEM-1, sulI, sulII, and tetW, were up to 90.5% with a 25.6 kGy absorbed dose. No resurgence of ARGs was detected after irradiation. Additionally, this study demonstrates a considerable reduction in the abundances of extracellular ARGs, with the transformation efficiencies of extracellular tetracycline and sulfadiazine resistance genes decreasing by 56.3-81.8% after 25.6 kGy irradiation. Abstract:Effective removal of refractory metronidazole (MNZ) from the aquatic environment is important for the safeguarding of human health and ecological safety. Herein, the combination of ultraviolet light-emitting diode at 365 nm wavelength and free chlorine (UV 365 -LED/chlorine) was used for the removal of MNZ. The UV 365 -LED/chlorine presented higher MNZ degradation efficiency (90.6%) compared to UV 365 -LED photolysis (29.96%) and chlorination alone (negligible). The degradation of MNZ by the UV 365 -LED photolysis and UV 365 -LED/chlorine process followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the corresponding degradation rate constants were 8.23 × 10 –3 and 5.505 × 10 –2 min –1 , respectively. Quenching experiments indicated that hydroxyl radicals (·OH), ozone (O 3 ), and reactive chlorine species (RCS) were responsible for MNZ removal during the UV 365 -LED/chlorine process. Meanwhile, probe experiments found that·OH and RCS were the major reactive species for MNZ elimination. Increasing chlorine dosage, raising UV power, and lowering pH of solution were beneficial to the MNZ degradation and corresponding halonitromethanes (HNMs) formation. HCO 3 – , NH 4 + , and Cl – presented inhibitory effects on MNZ degradation to different degrees, while Br – slightly improved MNZ degradation rate constants. Based on the analysis of MNZ degradation intermediates, the possible MNZ degradation pathways were proposed. Besides, energy consumption of UV 365 -LED/chlorine process decreased by 85.05% compared with UV 365 -LED photolysis. These findings contribute to the practical application of UV 365 -LED/chlorine process for MNZ removal in water systems and wastewater.

Abstract:In the last few decades, pharmaceuticals have emerged as a new class of serious environmental pollutants. The presence of these emerging contaminants even in minimal amounts ( micro to nanograms) has side effects and they can cause chronic toxicity to health and the environment. Also, the presence of pharmaceutical contaminants in water resources leads to significant antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Hence, the removal of antibiotics is essential from water resources. So far, a wide range of methods including adsorption, photodegradation, oxidation, photolysis, micro/nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis have been used to remove pharmaceutical contaminants from water systems. In this article, the research related to the processes based on the removal of metronidazole antibiotics including adsorption (Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs), Magnetic nanocomposites, Magnetic molecularly imprinted (MIP), Metal-organic frameworks), filtration, advanced oxidation processes ( Photocatalytic process, Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes, Sonolysis and sonocatalysis) and aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) from water and wastewater have been collected. The results have revealed that advanced oxidation processes especially the photocatalytic and sonolysis processes have high potential in removing MNZ (more than 90%).

[Multiple intracerebral enhanced lesions strongly suspected to be microsporidiosis. A case report].

Abstract:This case of microsporidiosis manifested as mutiple intracranial lesions separated in space and time, and neurological and radiological findings were improved with albendazole administration. A 33-year-old man presented with headache, fever, and dysphasia. His consciousness was clear. Neurological examination revealed acalculia, agraphia, and homonymous hemianopsia. He had a past history of febrile convulsive seizures of unknown cause until 14-years-old, but no history of immunodeficiency. T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a hypointense lesion with a hyperintense part, and ring-like enhancement with gadolinium-diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA), in the left temporal lobe. T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted MR imaging showed the lesion surrounded by moderate hyperintense areas. He underwent gross total resection of the lesion. Histological examination demonstrated intracellular clusters of small basophilic spore-like bodies in the astrocytes, suggestive of microsporidia-infected astrocytes. However, immunohistochemical, polymerase chain reaction, and serological analyses failed to confirm the definitive diagnosis of microsporidiosis, so that he received no further treatment. Three years later, he presented with sensory disturbance in the left side of his face and left cerebellar ataxia, followed by fever, abnormal sensation in the left side of his face, and aggravated ataxia of the left upper and lower extremities on day 10 after admission. T1-weighted MR imaging with Gd-DTPA showed an enhanced lesion with irregular margin in the left cerebellar peduncle. T2-weighted MR imaging showed a diffuse hyperintense region around the lesion. Cerebrospinal fluid culture, serological analysis for autoimmune disease, and thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic computed tomography and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography detected no abnormalities such as cancers or other lesions in the extracranial organs. No definitive diagnosis was obtained, but recurrence of microsporidiosis was the most probable cause. Administration of albendazole (600 mg/day) was started on day 15, because of rapid neurological and radiological deterioration. This treatment resulted in clinical improvement and disappearance of the lesion on MR imaging after daily administration for 4 weeks. He was discharged on foot with moderate sensory disturbance in the left side of the face and ataxia. Based on the clinical course and negative findings, the final diagnosis was microsporidiosis. This case suggests that microsporidiosis in the central nervous system can persist even in immunocompetent patients without involvement of any other organs, and that albendazole administration is likely to be effective.
An Evaluation of Metronidazole Degradation in a Plasma-Assisted Rotating Disk Reactor Coupled with TiO2 in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Pollution involving pharmaceutical components in bodies of water is an increasingly serious environmental issue. Plasma discharge for the degradation of antibiotics is an emerging technology that may be relevant toward addressing this issue. In this work, a plasma-assisted rotating disk reactor (plasma-RDR) and a photocatalyst—namely, titanium dioxide (TiO2)—were coupled for the treatment of metronidazole (MNZ). Discharge uniformity was improved by the use of a rotating electrode in the plasma-RDR, which contributed to the utilization of ultraviolet (UV) light radiation in the presence of TiO2. The experimental results showed that the degradation efficiency of MNZ and the concentration of generated hydroxyl radicals respectively increased by 41% and 2.954 mg∙L−1 as the rotational speed increased from 0 to 500 r∙min−1. The synergistic effect of plasma-RDR plus TiO2 on the generation of hydroxyl radicals was evaluated. Major intermediate products were identified using three-dimensional (3D) excitation emission fluorescence matrices (EEFMs) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and a possible degradation pathway is proposed herein. This plasma-catalytic process has bright prospects in the field of antibiotics degradation.

Abstract:The goal of this research was to study the degradation of nitrophenol solutions by high-energy electron beam irradiation. The results showed that the degradation processes obey an apparent first-order degradation. At the higher irradiation doses the pH of solutions decreased; however, the dissolved organic carbon of the solutions was essentially unchanged. To investigate the toxicity of the radiolytic products the oxygen uptake rate of activated sludge was determined. The toxicity of irradiated nitrophenol solutions decreased from the initial non-irradiated solutions.

Abstract:Metronidazole (MNZ) has identified as a remarkable environmental pollutant since it is highly consumed and is resistant to biological degradation. This study was accomplished to assess the photocatalytic degradation of MNZ in aqueous media using copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) activated by H2O2 in the presence of UV irradiation (UV/H2O2/CuO-NPs process). For this purpose, the laboratory-scale experiments were carried out in the 2.5 L batch reactor. The effect of operational parameters, that is, initial pH (3–11), the concentration of MNZ (25–100 mg/L), the concentration of H2O2 (10–40 mg/L), the concentration of CuO-NPs (2–8 mg/L), and reaction time (0–60 min) were also assessed. The results of this study clarified that under optimum conditions (pH = 3, H2O2 = 10 mg/L, [MNZ]0 = 50 mg/L, CuO-NPs = 8 mg/L, and reaction time = 60 min), the removal efficiencies of MNZ, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon (TOC) using the UV/H2O2/CuO-NPs process were 98.36%, 73.0%, and 56.52%, respectively. According to the results, by increasing reaction time from 0 to 60 min, the AOS in the effluent was increased from 1.39 to 2.38, and the COD/TOC ratio was decreased from 1.74 to 0.8. The results related to parameters of the kinetics showed that the removal of MNZ antibiotic using the studied system conforms to the pseudo-first-order kinetics (R2 = 0.983), and kinetics rate constant (k) was 0.0624 min–1. This study provides UV/H2O2/CuO-NPs process as an innovative method to degrade the MNZ antibiotic and enhance its biodegradability. We concluded that the studied process can be used as an effective and eco-friendly method in the removal of MNZ antibiotics.

Abstract:Sulfamethazine (SMT) was selected as a kind of typical sulphonamides pharmaceuticals for this research.The degradation of SMT was investigated by gamma irradiation,which presented high efficiency.Experiments and theoretical analysis were used to determine degradation characteristics of SMT.Byproducts and the variation of them were discussed based on the chromatographic and chemical analysis.The influence of initial SMT concentrations,pH values,O2 and N2and.OH radical scavenger on SMT degradation was determined.The experimental results showed that it was better for the SMT degradation and TOC removal in low initial SMT concentration,neutral and high dissolved oxygen solution.The degradation reaction was much inhibited by the.OH radical scavenger,which indicated that most of the SMT degradation was contributed by the oxidation of.OH radicals.Therefore in the wastewater treatment the removal efficiency of sulphonamides pharmaceuticals could be improved by changing the concentration,adjusting the pH value and/or increasing the aeration.
