Abstract:Musical acoustics is an interesting sub-field of physics which is usually able to engage students in a dual perspective, by combining science and art together. The physics principles involved in most musical instruments can be easily demonstrated with standard laboratory equipment and can become part of lecture or lab activities. In particular, we will show in this paper how to simulate a guitar using a conventional sonometer, in relation to the problem of the instrument intonation, i.e., how to obtain correctly tuned notes on a guitar or similar string instruments.

Physical Modeling of Piano Sound

Abstract:This paper aims to develop a comprehensive physical model and numerical simulation schemes for a grand piano. The model encompasses various subsystems, including hammer felt, hammer shank, string, soundboard, air and room barriers, each modeled in three dimensions to approach their realistic dynamics. A general framework for 3D elastic solids accounting for prestress and prestrain is introduced, particularly addressing the the nonlinearities arising from the large deformation of piano strings and the one-sided nature of hammer felt-string contact. The study also examines coupling between subsystem through mechanisms of surface force transmission and displacement/velocity continuity. To facilitate numerical simulations, strong PDEs are translated into weak ODEs via a flexible space discretization approach. Modal transformation of system ODEs is then employed to decouple and reduce DOFs, and an explicit time discretization scheme is customized for generating digital audio in the time domain. The study concludes with a discussion of the piano models capabilities, limitations, and potential future enhancements.

A parametric model and estimation techniques for the inharmonicity and tuning of the piano

Abstract:Inharmonicity of piano tones is an essential property of their timbre that strongly influences the tuning, leading to the so-called octave stretching. It is proposed in this paper to jointly model the inharmonicity and tuning of pianos on the whole compass. While using a small number of parameters, these models are able to reflect both the specificities of instrument design and tuner's practice. An estimation algorithm is derived that can run either on a set of isolated note recordings, but also on chord recordings, assuming that the played notes are known. It is applied to extract parameters highlighting some tuner's choices on different piano types and to propose tuning curves for out-of-tune pianos or piano synthesizers.
On inharmonicity in bass guitar strings with application to tapered and lumped constructions

Abstract:Abstract In this study, the inharmonicity of bass guitar strings with and without areas of lowered and raised mass near the saddle is studied. Using a very high sample rate of over 900 kHz enabled finite difference time domain simulation to be applied for strings that simultaneously have nonzero stiffness and linear density which varies along the length of the string. Results are compared to experiments on specially constructed strings. Perturbation theory is demonstrated to be sufficiently accurate (and much more computationally efficient) for practical design purposes in reducing inharmonicity. The subject of inharmonicity is well known in pianos but has not been studied extensively in bass guitar strings. Here, the inharmonicity is found to be low in the lowest (open string) pitch on the five string bass guitar ( $${B}_0$$ B 0 ) given typical standard construction. Conversely, the inharmonicity is high (around 100 cents at the 10th partial) when that string is sounded when stopped at the 12th fret and very high (around 100 cents at the 6th partial) when that string is stopped at the 21st fret. Bass guitar strings were constructed with three different constructions (standard, tapered and lumped) in order to demonstrate how incorporating a lump of raised mass near the saddle can achieve close to zero inharmonicity for the lower frequency partials. This also has potential in terms of improving the use of higher fret numbers for musical harmony (reducing beating) and also in controlling pitch glide that has, with some exceptions, often been attributed solely to nonlinear behaviour.

Abstract:An intrinsic essence of sounds in music is the evolution of their qualitative types while in mathematics we interpret each qualitative change by a bifurcation. Hopf bifurcation is an important venue to generate a signal with an arbitrary frequency. Hence, the investigations of musical sounds via bifurcation control theory are long-overdue and natural contributions. In this paper, we address the tone coloring of sounds by dynamical modeling of spectral and temporal envelopes. Multiple number of leading harmonic partials of a note (modulo a hearing sound velocity threshold) are attributed into an Eulerian differential system with n-tuple Hopf singularity. The qualitative evolution of the temporal envelop is then simulated over a set of consecutive time-intervals via bifurcation control of the differential system. For an instance, our proposed approach is applied on audio C#4 files obtained from piano and violin. Fourier analysis is used to generate the amplitude spectral vectors. Then, we associate each amplitude spectral vector with an Eulerian flow-invariant leaf. Bifurcation control suffices to accurately construct the desired spectral and amplitude envelopes of musical notes. These correspond with a rich bifurcation scenarios involving Clifford toral manifolds for the Eulerian differential system. In order to reduce the technicalities, we employ several reduction techniques and use one bifurcation parameter. We show how different ordered sets of elementary bifurcations such as pitchfork and (double) saddle-node bifurcations are associated with the qualitative temporal envelop changes of a C]4 played by either a piano or a violin. A complete hysteresis type cycle is observed within the temporal envelop bifurcations of the C#4 played by violin.

Abstract:Humans have been developing and playing musical instruments for millennia. With technological advancements, instruments were becoming ever more sophisticated. In recent decades computer-supported innovations have also been introduced in hardware design, usability, and aesthetics. One of the most commonly digitally augmented instruments is the piano. Besides electronic keyboards, several prototypes augmenting pianos with different projections providing various levels of interactivity on and around the keyboard have been implemented in order to support piano players. However, it is still unclear whether these solutions support the learning process. In this paper, we present a systematic review of augmented piano prototypes focusing on instrument learning based on the four themes derived from interviews with piano experts to understand better the problems of teaching the piano. These themes are (i) synchronised movement and body posture, (ii) sight-reading, (iii) ensuring motivation, and (iv) encouraging improvisation. We found that prototypes are saturated on the synchronisation themes, and there are opportunities for sight-reading, motivation, and improvisation themes. We conclude by presenting recommendations on augmenting piano systems towards enriching the piano learning experience as well as on possible directions to expand knowledge in the area.
Engraving Oriented Joint Estimation of Pitch Spelling and Local and Global Keys

Abstract:We revisit the problems of pitch spelling and tonality guessing with a new algorithm for their joint estimation from a MIDI file including information about the measure boundaries. Our algorithm does not only identify a global key but also local ones all along the analyzed piece. It uses Dynamic Programming techniques to search for an optimal spelling in term, roughly, of the number of accidental symbols that would be displayed in the engraved score. The evaluation of this number is coupled with an estimation of the global key and some local keys, one for each measure. Each of the three informations is used for the estimation of the other, in a multi-steps procedure. An evaluation conducted on a monophonic and a piano dataset, comprising 216 464 notes in total, shows a high degree of accuracy, both for pitch spelling (99.5% on average on the Bach corpus and 98.2% on the whole dataset) and global key signature estimation (93.0% on average, 95.58% on the piano dataset). Designed originally as a backend tool in a music transcription framework, this method should also be useful in other tasks related to music notation processing.

Abstract:The paper describes inharmonicity of musical instruments with strings. In the first part an algorithm for determination of coefficient of inharmonicity is shown, as well as algorithm for inharmonicity estimation and estimation of mean aliquote error of two-tone. In the second part paper shows results of algorithm’s application in signal processing of tones in contra octave of upright piano “August Förster” manufactured in the year 1970. The results are given in graphics and in tables. An estimation of inharmonicity and medium aliquote error is given by comparative analysis made with Steinway pianos and Nordiska 1 and Straud upright pianos.

Abstract:The piano is known as the king of musical instruments for its rich expressiveness. Pianists get rich emotion with tone control. Touch key mode is the primary method of tone control. The purpose of this paper is to conduct research and analysis on different keying modes and brain-sound image establishment modes in piano performance. In this paper, we first propose a fuzzy mathematical proximity comparison method and an audio feature extraction method. Most of the audio features are derived from speech recognition tasks. They can reduce the original waveform sampling signal, thereby accelerating the machine’s understanding of the semantic meaning of audio. Using comparative analysis method, fuzzy mathematical proximity comparison method, and audio feature extraction as research methods, a model analysis research model based on different key touch methods in piano playing was established, and the relationship between piano key touch and brain sound image was studied. The experimental results of this paper show that after using the research method in this paper, the error rate of the data is controlled within 5%. Compared with previous research methods, the error rate is lower and has certain practical value.

Acoustic cues of keyboard mechanics enable auditory localization of upright piano tones

Abstract:Piano tone localization at the performer's listening point is a multisensory process involving audition, vision, and upper limb proprioception. The consequent representation of the auditory scene, especially in experienced pianists, is likely also influenced by their memory about the instrument keyboard. Disambiguating such components is not obvious, and first requires an analysis of the acoustic tone localization process to assess the role of auditory feedback in forming this scene. This analysis is complicated by the acoustic behavior of the piano, which does not guarantee the activation of the auditory precedence effect during a tone attack, nor can it provide robust interaural differences during the subsequent free evolution of the sound. In a tone localization task using a Disklavier upright piano (which can be operated remotely and configured to have its hammers hit a damper instead of producing a tone), twenty-three expert musicians, including pianists, successfully recognized the angular position of seven evenly distributed notes across the keyboard. The experiment involved listening to either full piano tones or just the key mechanical noise, with no additional feedback from other senses. This result suggests that the key mechanical noise alone activated the localization process without support from vision and/or limb proprioception. Since the same noise is present in the onset of the full tones, the key mechanics of our piano created a touch precursor in such tones that may be responsible of their correct angular localization by means of the auditory precedence effect. However, the significance of pitch cues arriving at a listener after the touch precursor was not measured when full tones were presented. As these cues characterize a note and, hence, the corresponding key position comprehensively, an open question remains regarding the contribution of pianists' spatial memory of the instrument keyboard to tone localization.
Design of a fretboard using the stiff string equation

Abstract:Guitar fretboards are designed based on the equation of the ideal string. That is, it neglects several factors as nonlinearities and bending stiffness of the strings. Due to this fact, intonation of guitars along the whole neck is not perfect, and guitars have right tuning just in an \emph{average} sense. There are commercially available fretboards that differ from the traditional design. (One example is the \cite{patent} by the Company True Temperament AB, where each fretboard is made using CNC processes.) As a final application of this work we would like to redesign the fretboard layout considering the effects of bending stiffness. The main goal of this project is to analyze the differences between the differences in the solution for vibrations of the ideal string and a stiff string. These differences should lead to changes in the fret distribution for a guitar, and, hopefully improve the overall intonation of the instrument. We will start analyzing the ideal string equation and after a good understanding of this analytical solution we will proceed with the, more complex, stiff equation. Topics like separation of variables, Fourier transforms, and Perturbation analysis might prove useful during the course of this project

Abstract:By applying the principle of standing waves, the various scales produced by a piano within music software can be transformed into Chladni figures. These figures, which visually represent the vibration patterns of a surface, can be captured using photographic equipment. By carefully selecting the most accurate patterns and organizing them into a comprehensive table, it is possible to create a visual representation of Chladni figures corresponding to each musical syllable. This method provides a unique way to visualize the acoustic characteristics of different musical notes.

Abstract:Psychology of Music, Ahead of Print. Changes in sound intensity are important components of piano performance. Previous research in this area has largely focused on perception of changes in pitch and timing, with little investigation of sound intensity. The present study used Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) technology to algorithmically control the key velocity, and thereby sound intensity, of consecutive piano tones. Non-musicians (n = 20) and experienced pianists (n = 30) played pairs of consecutive piano tones with 0–15 arbitrary units (a.u.) of change in key velocity, indicating whether they perceived the first, second, or neither tone as louder. All participants completed the test with C4, and a subset (n = 24) with pitches C2 and C6 also. The mean just noticeable difference (JND) ranged from 2.71 to 4.48 a.u., corresponding to 0.68–1.22 dBC on the Yamaha Disklavier used to produce the stimuli. Experienced pianists demonstrated lower JND, which the authors theorize may be linked to listener motivation. When two tones were played with the same key velocity, participants tended to perceive the first tone as louder. The authors discuss a number of factors that may be relevant considerations for application of the findings in music and psychoacoustics research. These findings hold insight for music performance researchers, psychoacoustics researchers, and pedagogues.

Abstract:The relationship between perceptual loudness and physical attributes of sound is an important subject in both computer music and psychoacoustics. Early studies of "equal-loudness contour" can trace back to the 1920s and the measured loudness with respect to intensity and frequency has been revised many times since then. However, most studies merely focus on synthesized sound, and the induced theories on natural tones with complex timbre have rarely been justified. To this end, we investigate both theory and applications of natural-tone loudness perception in this paper via modeling piano tone. The theory part contains: 1) an accurate measurement of piano-tone equal-loudness contour of pitches, and 2) a machine-learning model capable of inferring loudness purely based on spectral features trained on human subject measurements. As for the application, we apply our theory to piano control transfer, in which we adjust the MIDI velocities on two different player pianos (in different acoustic environments) to achieve the same perceptual effect. Experiments show that both our theoretical loudness modeling and the corresponding performance control transfer algorithm significantly outperform their baselines.
Intonation and Compensation of Fretted String Instruments

Abstract:In this paper we present mathematical and physical models to be used in the analysis of the problem of intonation of musical instruments such as guitars, mandolins and the like, i.e., we study how to improve the tuning on these instruments. This analysis begins by designing the placement of frets on the fingerboard according to mathematical rules and the assumption of an ideal string, but becomes more complicated when one includes the effects of deformation of the string and inharmonicity due to other string characteristics. As a consequence of these factors, perfect intonation of all the notes on the instrument can never be achieved, but complex compensation procedures are introduced and studied to minimize the problem. To test the validity of these compensation procedures, we have performed extensive measurements using standard monochord sonometers and other basic acoustical devices, confirming the correctness of our theoretical models. In particular, these experimental activities can be easily integrated into standard acoustics courses and labs, and can become a more advanced version of basic experiments with monochords and sonometers.

Abstract:It has been shown that it is characteristic of piano tones to have partials that are slightly higher in frequency than harmonics would be. The departure from a harmonic relationship is termed inharmonicity of the partials. It has been shown also that the inharmonic relationships of the partials influence the tuning of the octaves of the piano. The result is a departure from the equally tempered scale with the treble strings tuned sharp and the bass strings tuned flat. The octaves are thus stretched from the true-octave relationship. This paper discusses the influence of the string-to-string patterns of inharmonicity upon piano tuning within the octave. It is the goal of the piano tuner to tune each string so as to produce smoothly increasing progressions of beat rates between two tones in a given musical interval as the tones move up the scale. This goal can be achieved in practice if the partial-inharmonicity pattern is essentially the same for each string or if there is a smooth change in the pattern from one string group to the next. The departure from “ideal,” especially in spinets, is discussed and demonstrated.

Probing the underlying principles of dynamics in piano performances using a modelling approach

Abstract:Variations in dynamics are an essential component of musical performance in most instruments. To study the factors that contribute to dynamic variations, we used a model approaching, allowing for determination of the individual contribution of different musical features. Thirty monophonic melodies from 3 stylistic eras with all expressive markings removed were performed by 20 pianists on a Disklavier piano. The results indicated a relatively high agreement among the pianists (Cronbach's alpha = 0.88). The overall average dynamics (across pianists) could be predicted quite well using support vector regression (R2 = 66%) from a set of 48 score-related features. The highest contribution was from pitch-related features (37.3%), followed by phrasing (12.3%), timing (2.8%), and meter (0.7%). The highest single contribution was from the high-loud principle, whereby higher notes were played louder, as corroborated by the written feedback of many of the pianists. There were also differences between the styles. The highest contribution from phrasing, for example, was obtained from the Romantic examples, while the highest contribution from meter came from the Baroque examples. An analysis of each individual pianist revealed some fundamental differences in approach to the performance of dynamics. All participants were undergraduate-standard pianists or above; however, varied levels of consistency and predictability highlighted challenges in acquiring a reliable group in terms of expertise and preparation, as well as certain pianistic challenges posed by the task. Nevertheless, the method proved useful in disentangling some underlying principles of musical performance and their relation to structural features of the score, with the potential for productive adaptation to a wider range of expressive and instrumental contexts.

Abstract:String instruments, like the violin, have been studied for the past 350 years. These studies have focused on the quality of the wood, dynamic characteristics of these instruments and structural acoustics and psychoacoustics. The emphasis of the previous research was to understand the secrets of great designers of these instruments. For example, one would like to explain reasons for the legendary quality of the sound radiated by a Stradivarius and the price that it commands today. Many researchers have also suggested passive techniques to improve the quality of these musical instruments. However, no attempts have been made to use active structural control and smart structures to modify the quality of the music radiated by these instruments like the violin. In this paper, we start with the assumption that the legendary quality of the sound radiated by a Stradivarius is due to its special structural dynamic or structural-acoustics characteristics. Our approach is to use the concepts of adaptive or smart structures and active structural control to improve the quality of the sound radiated by these musical instruments. Procedures are developed to change the structural dynamic characteristics, actively, to replicate the structural dynamic characteristics of musical instruments developed by great masters.
