Abstract:The oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a worldwide pest leading to crop production. The management of B. dorsalis is becoming more and more difficult because of the emerging insecticide resistance. Searching for new and effective methods in managing this pest has become an urgent task. Here, we explored the relationship between pigmentation and insecticide resistance through conducting studies on 5 strains of B. dorsalis (CK, CZ, CB, LC and LX) with various traits of pigmentation and insecticide resistance. Strain CK was a wild strain with brown pupae coloration while strain CZ was a beta-cypermethrin-resistant strain with pupae coloration was brown. Strain CB was a pigmentation mutation strain with white pupae coloration. Strain LC was the female of pigmentation sex genetic strain whose pupae coloration was white. Strain LX was the male of pigmentation sex genetic strain whose pupae coloration was brown. Efficacy tests were employed to evaluate the resistance performance of the 5 trains, transcriptome sequencing and gene quantifications were used to explore the potential genes in both pigmentation and detoxification pathway. The brief of results were as follow: Results of efficacy tests of the 5 strains with beta-cypermethrin, abamectin and trichlorfon respectively showed that resistances to these three insecticide of strains LX and LC were very low. The corrective mortalities of strains LX and LC in 128 ug/ml of abamectin were 49.48±3.01%, 59.06±1.89% respectively while that of strain CK was 11.80%±1.37. The corrective mortality of strain CZ were lowest in all concentrations level of all test reagent. The resistance of strain CK was similar to CB. Transcriptomic analysis showed that 24 genes and 165 genes were associated with pigmentation and detoxification. Gene expression pattern of strain CK was similar to strain CB while these two strains were different to strains LC and LX, and the gene expression pattern of strain CZ was more similar to strains LC and LX. Results of gene quantifications in B. dorsalis pupae showed that the relative expressions of yellow gene MK529913, DDC gene MK515141, laccase2 gene MK515143 and PO gene MK515140 in brown pupae (CK, CZ, LX) were significantly higher than those in white pupae (CB, LC) while the relative expressions of AANAT gene MK515144 in white pupae were significantly higher than those in yellow pupae. In summary, analyses of gene quantifications and efficacy tests indicated that high expressions of P450 gene, AANAT gene might contribute to resistances of adults of B. dorsalis to beta-cypermethrin and a bamectin; high expression of yellow gene might contribute to resistances of adults which emergenced from brown pupae to beta-cypermethrin and abamectin; high expressions of yellow genes, laccase2 gene, PO gene and DDC gene might contribute to the resistance of B. dorsalis to trichlorfon.

Abstract:Cydia pomonella L. is a highly destructive pest inflicting substantial damage on pome fruits globally. Resistance to chemical pesticides by C. pomonella poses a significant challenge to the effective management strategies. Utilising entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) for the management of insect pests has emerged as one of the promising and environmentally friendly alternatives. Against this backdrop, we conducted laboratory bioassays to assess the efficacy of three EPF, namely Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill., Cordyceps fumosorosea (Wize) and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorokīn against C. pomonella using three effective concentrations (1 × 10 4 , 1 × 10 5 , and 1 × 10 6 conidia/ml). Highest larval (98.62 ± 10.00%) and pupal (37.35 ± 2.15%) mortality was observed when treated with B. bassiana while lowest larval (51.55 ± 6.30%) and pupal (17.83 ± 7.28%) mortality was seen in C. fumosorosea. Maximum adult emergence (16.26 ± 3.24) was recorded in C. fumosorosea and the minimum (5.72 ± 0.09) in B. bassiana . LC 50 values of C. fumosorosea , M. anisopliae and B. bassiana were 5.482, 2.683 and 1.891 conidia/ml, respectively. All three tested EPF were effective against C. pomonella under controlled laboratory conditions.

Ovicidal Activity of Two Fungal Pathogens (hyphomycetes) Against Tetranychus Cinnabarinus (acarina: Tetranichidae)

Abstract:The carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus , is an economically important pest that devastates varieties of crops worldwide and develops significant resistance to common chemical pesticides, most of which lack ovicidal activity. In the present study, two isolates of entomopathogenic fungi, Beuaveria bassiana SG8702 and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus Pfr153, were bioassayed against T. cinnabarinus eggs at 25 °C under a photophase of 12:12 (L:D). Infected eggs on Vicia faba var. minor leaves failed to hatch due to distortion and shrinkage and had fungal outgrowths when maintained under moist conditions. Sprays of B. bassiana conidia to T. cinnabarinus eggs (on leaves) at the concentrations of 58, 298 and 1306 conidia/mm 2 (3 replicates per concentration and 35–65 fresh mite eggs per replicate) resulted in corrected egg mortalities of 20.4±4.2%, 36.0±7.6% and 64.6±12.5% (F=43.14, P <0.01), respectively; sprays of P. fumosoroseus at 129, 402 and 2328 conidia/mm 2 caused egg mortalities of 16.1±11.1%, 44.2±13.3%, and 63.4±11.7% (F= 15.37, P=0.01), respectively. In contrast, natural egg mortalities in blank controls were 7.8% and 10.3% only. Based on probit analysis, the estimates of LC 50 with 95% confidential limits were 548 (393–858) conidia/mm 2 for B. bassiana and 914 (625–1550) for P. fumosoroseus , respectively. Apparently, both fungal species were capable of infecting T. cinnabarinus eggs, but the ovicidal activity of the B. bassiana isolate was greater than that of the P. fumosoroseus isolate. This represents the first report on the ovicidal activity of the two entomopathogenic Hyphomycetes against T. cinnabarinus .

Abstract:Ten isolates of Beauveria bassiana (Bb), Metarhizium anisopliae (Ma) and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Pfr) with different host insect origins were assayed for their biocontrol potential against the female adults of carmine spider mite Tetranychus cinnabarinus using a novel bioassay system, which was featured with paired fava bean leaves supported upright by the petioles individually inserted into rhizocaline-inclusive agar in caged bottles and provided a nearly natural habitant for free activity of the highly mobile mite adults. Each pair of the leaves harboring 15 females (⩽2-day-old) was exposed to a spray of each isolate at the concentration of 21–78 (low), 119–308 (medium) or 740–1946 (high) conidia/mm2 plus a blank control (sprayed with 0.02% Tween-80), maintained in a top-meshed cage at 25°C and 12:12 L:D and observed daily for 9-day mortality records. Each of the bioassays was repeated 6–8 times. The three fungal concentrations resulted in the mite mortalities of 31.9–87.7% for B. bassiana, 24.2–80.3% for M. anisopliae and 19.4–77.7% for P. fumosoroseus, respectively. The LC50s of the tested isolates determined by the fitted time-concentration-mortality relationships declined over days after spray while their LT50s shortened as the concentration increased. The two isolates Bb734 and Bb2860 had the LC50s of 42–180 and 177–351 conidia/mm2 on days 7–9 and the LT50s of 5.8–6.9 and 3.6–8.4 days at 200–1500 conidia/mm2. These were followed by Ma456 with the LC50s of 179–925 conidia/mm2 on days 7–9 and the LT50s of 6.5–7.2 days at 750–1500 conidia/mm2. Other isolates had larger LC50s and longer LT50s, which represent intermediate or low virulence to the mite species. Thus, the mentioned three among the tested isolates are promising candidates for microbial control of the mite pest.
Comparative growth kinetics and virulence of four different isolates of entomopathogenic fungi in the house fly (Muscadomestica L.)

Abstract:Virulence (speed of kill) of a fungal entomopathogen against a particular host insect depends on biological properties of the specific isolate-host combination, together with factors such as fungal dose. How these intrinsic and extrinsic factors affect the actual pattern and extent of fungal growth invivo is poorly understood. In this study we exposed adult house flies (Muscadomestica L.) to surfaces treated with high and low doses of Beauveriabassiana (isolates BbGHA and Bb5344), Metarhiziumanisopliae (strain MaF52) and M.anisopliae var. acridum (isolate Ma189) and used quantitative real-time PCR with species-specific primers to examine the relationship between fungal growth kinetics and virulence. At the highest dose, all fungal isolates killed flies significantly faster than controls, with BbGHA, Bb5344 and MaF52 roughly equivalent in virulence (median survival time (±SE)=5.0±0.10, 5.0±0.08 and 5.0±0.12days, respectively) and Ma189 killing more slowly (MST=8.0±0.20days). At the lower dose, effective virulence was reduced and only flies exposed to isolates BbGHA and Bb5344 died significantly faster than controls (MST=12±1.36, 15±0.64, 18±0.86 and 21.0±0.0days for BbGHA, Bb5344, MaF52 and Ma189, respectively). Real-time PCR assays revealed that flies exposed to surfaces treated with the high dose of spores had greater spore pickup than flies exposed to the low dose for each isolate. After pickup, a general pattern emerged for all isolates in which there was a significant reduction of recovered fungal DNA 48h after exposure followed by a brief recovery phase, a stable period of little net change in fungal sequence counts, and then a dramatic increase in sequence counts of up to three orders of magnitude around the time of host death. However, while the patterns of growth were similar, there were quantitative differences such that higher final sequence counts were recovered in insects infected with the most lethal isolates and with the higher dose. These results suggest that variation in virulence between isolates, species and doses is determined more by quantitative rather than qualitative differences in fungal growth kinetics.

Abstract:Abstract Field cage tests were carried out to determine the mating compatibility of sterile and wild melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae ( C oquillett), males that were treated or not treated with entomopathogenic fungi. The melon flies were irradiated at 70 Gy, and the adults were treated with dry conidia of either Beauveria bassiana ( B alsamo) or Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin 1 day before the mating test. Our results demonstrate that sterile melon flies treated with either B. bassiana or M. anisopliae showed mating compatibility with the wild flies. Inoculation of the flies with the fungi did not significantly affect the mean time of copulation (323–567 min) as compared to mating involving only wild flies (407–518 min). Treatment of the flies with either B. bassiana or M. anisopliae did not significantly affect the propensity of mating. Wild females mated indiscriminately with sterile, sterile B. bassiana ‐treated or sterile M. anisopliae ‐treated males. Irrespective of the treatment combinations, mean percentage remating was significantly higher for sterile females with sterile males (7.72–27.12%) as compared to wild females with sterile males (0.76–14.90%). The possibility of using sterile melon flies as vectors of the entomopathogenic fungi to enhance an SIT programme is discussed.

Abstract:The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and marula fruit fly, Ceratitis cosyra (Walker), are major fruit-infesting tephritids across sub-Saharan Africa. Biological control of these pests using parasitic wasps has been widely adopted but with varying levels of success. Most studies investigating host-parasitoid models have focused on functional and evolutionary aspects leaving a knowledge gap about the physiological mechanisms underpinning the efficacy of parasitoids as biocontrol agents of tephritids. To better understand these physiological mechanisms, we investigated changes in the cellular immune responses of C. cosyra and B. dorsalis when exposed to the parasitic wasps, Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmaed) and Psyttalia cosyrae (Wilkinson). We found that B. dorsalis was more resistant to parasitisation, had a higher hemocyte count, and encapsulated more parasitoid eggs compared to C. cosyra , achieving up to 100% encapsulation when exposed to P. cosyra e. Exposing B. dorsalis to either parasitoid species induced the formation of a rare cell type, the giant multinucleated hemocyte, which was not observed in C. cosyra . Furthermore, compared to P. cosyra e-parasitized larvae, those of both host species parasitized by D. longicaudata had lower encapsulation rates, hemocyte counts and spreading abilities and yielded a higher number of parasitoid progeny with the highest parasitoid emergence (72.13%) recorded in C. cosyra . These results demonstrate that cellular immune responses are central to host-parasitoid interaction in tephritid fruit flies and further suggest that D. longicaudata presents greater potential as a biocontrol agent of B. dorsalis and C. cosyra in horticultural cropping systems.

Susceptibility of All Nymphal Stages of Bemisia tabaci Biotype B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) to Three Brazilian Isolates of Cordyceps sp. (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) in a Screenhouse Under Variable Temperature and Moisture Conditions

Abstract:The susceptibility of 1st to 4th instars of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius, 1989) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) to three isolates of Cordyceps sp. (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) was evaluated in screenhouse experiments under variable temperatures and moisture conditions. No differences in susceptibility to the Cordyceps sp. isolates were observed among 1st, 2nd, and 3rd instar nymphs with respect to median lethal time (LT50) values. Confirmed mortalities ranged from 63.7 to 87.8% when the isolates were tested at 5 × 107 conidia mL-1. The 4th instar was the least susceptible to the fungal isolates (≤ 36.6% mortality). However, 60.0 to 99.5% of the adults that emerged from 4th instar nymphs previously treated with the fungus succumbed to the infection. Temperature was more detrimental to Cordyceps sp. virulence towards B. tabaci nymphs than relative humidity (RH). At similar RH, median LT50 for 1st instar (9.4 days) was higher than for 3rd instar (5.3 days) when the fungus was tested at 5 × 107 conidia mL-1; minimal temperatures of ≥ 12.6°C compared to ≥ 17.0°C were registered for experiments with 1st and 3rd instars, respectively. However, temperatures ≥ 35°C for 4 to 6 h daily did not affect the efficacy of the fungus against nymphs. Cordyceps sp. showed high virulence to all life stages of B. tabaci at relatively low RH, and an ability to grow extensively over the leaf surface and to produce high amounts of conidia on infected hosts. These attributes certainly boost its potential as an important pest control component of B. tabaci biotype B, especially for management of populations resistant to synthetic insecticides.
Dose, temperature and formulation shape virulence against the oriental fruit fly: lessons for improving on-target control strategies

Abstract:Entomopathogenic fungi are a promising tool for the biological control of crop pests provided low or no impact on non-target organisms. Selection for host specificity as well as on-target applications open new avenues for more sustainable strategies for pest management. Isolates of (Metschn.) Sorokin have been identified as promising for developing innovative entomovectoring-based strategies for the control of the oriental fruit fly, (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), in Africa. To be effective, this technology requires high strain virulence at a low number of spores, but sufficient incubation time to allow transmission to wild conspecifics. This depends on trophic interactions between the host and the pathogen, which are mediated by abiotic factors. In the present study, we investigated the virulence of the Met69 strain against adult flies, depending on the inoculation dose, air temperature and formulation. High pathogenicity was observed at very low inoculation doses (LT50 of 4.85 days with 6100 spores per fly) independently of fly sex. Virulence increased with spore load in a tight range (5600 and 6100 spores per fly) and with air temperature observed in the field (20-28°C). Unexpectedly, corn starch used as an adjuvant to increase the carrying capacity of insects decreased the virulence of the pathogen. The results will help improve area-wide control strategies based on the contamination of wild flies through auto-inoculation devices or interactions with released mass-reared sterile males coated with fungal spores. Furthermore, the study proposes an approach for calibrating area-wide control strategies, taking into account both the insect and pathogen bioecology and the environment in which they evolve.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding calf starter on rumen pH of dairy calves during weaning transition. Twenty Holstein bull calves were paired into 10 blocks by starting date of the study and body weight, and fed either milk replacer and hay (MR) or MR, hay, and a commercial texturized calf starter (MR+S) in a randomized complete block design. All calves were fed 750 g/d of milk replacer as the basal diet. Calves on MR+S treatment were also fed a calf starter ad libitum to maintain similar energy intake between calves within blocks, and MR calves were fed additional milk replacer that was equivalent to energy from calf starter intake. When MR+S calves consumed a calf starter at 680 g/d for 3 consecutive d, rumen pH of a MR+S calf and his MR counterpart was measured continuously for 3 d using a small ruminant rumen pH measurement system. Treatment did not affect minimum pH, mean pH, maximum pH, standard deviation of mean pH, and duration or area under pH 5.8, indicating that calf starter consumption did not appear to affect rumen pH. However, hay intake was negatively correlated to area under pH 5.8, with a breakpoint at 0.080 kg/d intake, suggesting hay intake might play an important role in mitigating ruminal acidosis in dairy calves during weaning transition.

Beauveria bassiana is one of the common fungi used as a bio-control agent. This entomopathogenic fungus was cultivated on Petri dishes containing PDA. The spore suspension of this fungus was prepared using sterilized distilled water, and three concentrations were used: 20×106 , 10×106 and 5×106 spores/ml. The effectiveness of these three concentrations was tested on larvae and pupae of the studied insect. The larval mortality rate ranged from 73.33% at the highest concentration to 33.33% at the lowest concentration used. Pupal mortality reached 66.66% at the highest concentration and 16.66% at the lowest concentration of spore suspension. Mortality rate was directly proportional to the spore suspension concentration of the entomopathogenic fungus. Abstract:Tenebrio molitor L., also known as the mealworm, is a polyphagous insect pest that infests various stored grains worldwide. Both the adult and larval stages can cause significant damage to stored grains. The present study focused on isolating entomopathogenic fungi from an infected larval cadaver under environmental conditions. Fungal pathogenicity was tested on T. molitor larvae and pupae for 12 days. Entomopathogenic fungi were identified using biotechnological methods based on their morphology and the sequence of their nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS). The results of the insecticidal activity indicate that the virulence of fungi varies between the larval and pupal stages. In comparison to the larval stage, the pupal stage is highly susceptible to Metarhizium rileyi, exhibiting 100% mortality rates after 12 days (lethal concentration 50 [LC50] = 7.8 × 106 and lethal concentration 90 (LC90) = 2.1 × 1013 conidia/mL), whereas larvae showed 92% mortality rates at 12 days posttreatment (LC50 = 1.0 × 106 and LC90 = 3.0 × 109 conidia/mL). The enzymatic analyses revealed a significant increase in the levels of the insect enzymes superoxide dismutase (4.76–10.5 mg−1) and glutathione S‐transferase (0.46–6.53 mg−1) 3 days after exposure to M. rileyi conidia (1.5 × 105 conidia/mL) compared to the control group. The findings clearly show that M. rileyi is an environmentally friendly and effective microbial agent for controlling the larvae and pupae of T. molitor.

Abstract:Abstract Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), also known as the Mediterranean fruit fly, is one of the most serious pests for several fresh fruit commodities causing extensive fruit losses worldwide. The response of C. capitata adults to fruit and nonfruit volatiles has been extensively studied. However, the linkage between fruit volatiles and the female ovipositional choice has not been fully elucidated. The present study focused on identifying the volatile organic compounds emitted by detached intact fresh fruits (oranges, lemons, bergamots, and apples) and citrus essential oils and evaluate their effect on Mediterranean fruit fly oviposition. There were more than 130 and 45 volatiles compounds detected in fruits odors and citrus essential oils, respectively. The volatile profile of fruits was dominated either from terpenes and terpenoids or from esters of butanoic, hexanoic, and octanoic acids while limonene was by far the most abundant compound in all citrus essential oils. Oviposition of C. capitata was strongly affected by volatiles emanated from both intact fruit and the citrus essential oils. Regarding the volatiles of the intact fruits, the odor of sweet orange elicited strong oviposition responses to females, while bergamot had the least stimulatory effect on oviposition. Bergamot oil also elicited the least oviposition stimulation compared to sweet orange and lemon essential oils. Our discussion elaborates on the role of fruit volatiles on host finding behavior and fruit susceptibility to C. capitata infestation and includes possible practical implication of the above findings.

Effect of UV-C Rays in Entomopathogenic Fungi Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) to Control Apple Fruit Moth Cydia pomonella L. (Tortricidae: Lepidoptera)

Abstract:The study was conducted to investigate the behaviour and development of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana exposed to UV-C rays and exposure periods under laboratory conditions in pupae of the apple moth Cydia pomonella L. The results indicated that fungus exposed to UV-C rays for 5 minutes became more effective in controlling moths, compared with concentrations (2.25× 104, 105, 106 and 107 spore/ml) of fungus exposed to UV-C rays for 10 minutes. The results also showed that pupae and insects emerging from them at the age of (1-2) days were more sensitive to fungus concentrations than pupae at the age of (10-12). As the percentage of emergence decreased, with the increase in fungus concentrations. Furthermore, the levels of proteins in the blood for insects produced from pupae aged (1-2) and (10-12) days decreased to 8.30 and 16.10 μg/ml ,respectively, when were exposed to the irradiated fungus B. bassiana for 5 minutes at a concentration of 2.25x107 spores/ml. Compared to insects produced from pupae exposed to non-irradiated pathogenic fungi, that was 20.12 and 25.15 μg/ml, respectively, and in comparison with insects produced from pupae exposed to the fungus for 10 minutes at the age of (1-2) and (10-12) days, respectively, as it reached 12.50 and 26.10 μg/ml and for the same concentration. In addition to a decrease in the levels of sugars in the blood, reaching 20.00 and 24.00 ml/ μg in insects produced from pupae aged (1-2) and (10-12) days, respectively, exposed to the irradiated fungus for 5 minutes and with the same concentration. The percentages of blood components decreased quantitatively and qualitatively, as the number of hemocytes for insects that emerged from pupae exposed to the irradiated fungus for 5minutes reached 70 and 95 cells/ml, respectively, compared to 92 and 110 cells/ml for insects that emerged from pupae exposed to the irradiated fungus for 10minutes and with the same concentration.

Abstract:Entomopathogenic fungi are proposed biological control agents against the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri). We quantified the pathogenicity of Cordyceps javanica strain Apopka 97 strain (Cja Apopka 97) (blastospores and conidia) against D. citri using the spray technique. We also used light and scanning electron microscopy to observe the Cja Apopka 97, infection process against D. citri adults at different stages pre- and post-mortem. Our findings demonstrated that psyllid mortality in the blastospore treatment ranged from 8 to 25% within 24–48 h of exposure, compared to 0% in the conidial and control treatments. However, psyllid mortality rate had reached 100% by 7 days after exposure at a concentration of 107 spores/mL, under both fungal treatments compared to the controls (0%). SEM and light microscopy revealed several stages in in the Cja Apopka 97 infection process of D. citri, including spore adherence and germ tube formation within 24 h post-inoculation, penetration pegs and mycelia growth on wings after 72 h, rupturing of cuticle after 96 h and mycelial mass colonizing host body after 144 h. Our study findings provide basic information on the interaction of entomopathogenic fungi with D. citri which will assist in the understanding of the infection process and the potential roles of entomopathogenic fungi in its management.
Effects of Sublethal Concentrations of Insecticides on Survival and Reproduction of Two Bactrocera Species (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Abstract:Abstract The melon fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) and the pumpkin fruit fly, Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae), are important invasive pests on Cucurbitaceous hosts. The acute toxicity of five insecticides to females of these two fruit fly species was bio-assayed by membrane method, and effects of their sublethal concentration on the survival, reproduction, and ovary development of females were evaluated in the laboratory. Results showed that based on the LC50 values, both B. cucurbitae and B. tau were the most susceptible to trichlorfon. After treatment with sublethal concentration (LC30) of trichlorfon, abamectin+β-cypermethrin, spinetoram, and lambda-cyhalothrin, the female survival days of the two Bactrocera species were significantly shortened compared with the control. Moreover, the fecundity of two Bactrocera species was remarkably decreased, after exposure to abamectin+β-cypermethrin and trichlorfon LC30. However, the sublethal concentration (LC30) of insecticides had no significant influence on the egg hatchability of the fruit flies. Furthermore, after treatment with abamectin+β-cypermethrin LC30, the ovary length, width, and egg load of B. cucurbitae were significantly lower than that of the control; however, only the ovarian length and egg load of B. tau were significantly decreased on the 16th and 20th day. In conclusion, abamectin+β-cypermethrin has an excellent insecticidal activity against B. cucurbitae and B. tau.

Abstract:The purpose of the paper was to assess the validity of the self-reported tobacco smoke exposure in pregnancy against plasma cotinine measurements. A total of 158 patients from obstetrical wards was included in the cotinine study. Biochemical smokers were defined as persons with serum cotinine levels greater than 25 ng/ml. The data showed that the exposure classification based on self-reported smoking habit status confronted with cotinine values was of low sensitivity (52%) but of high specificity (98%). To assess the effect of this exposure classification error on the association between the low birth weight (LBW) and smoking in pregnancy, the data from the recent survey in Cracow children have been used. It was shown that RR estimates for smoking and LBW after adjustment for misclassification error were substantially higher than that not adjusted (crude RR = 2.9, corrected RR = 5.1). Due to the exposure misclassification error the attributable fraction (AF) of LBW due to mother's smoking was heavily biased as well. Estimated attributable fraction AF(pop) based on crude RR amounted to 22%, however, after adjustment reached 50%. The corresponding values for attributable fraction in exposed group AF(exp) were 66% and 80%.

Abstract:In the present study, the susceptibility of different developmental stages (eggs, larvae, protonymphs, deutonymphs and adults) of Tetranychus urticae Koch to the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo-Crivelli) Vuillemin and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin was evaluated in the laboratory. At each developmental stage, four concentrations (3 × 105, 1 × 106, 3 × 106 and 1 × 107 conidia/ml) of both fungi were sprayed. Egg viability and motile-stage mortality varied among the fungal isolates and conidial concentrations. The highest conidial concentration (1 × 107 conidia/ml) significantly reduced the viability of eggs and increased the mortality of motile stages. However, deutonymphs and adults were more susceptible to fungal infection than larvae and protonymphs. The lethal concentration values to 50% (LC50) and 90% mortality (LC90) varied with the fungal isolates and developmental stages. The results show the prospects of B. bassiana and M. anisopliae for the control of T. urticae.
