Abstract:We discuss natural transformations in the context of Lie groupoids, and their infinitesimal counterpart. Our main result is an integration procedure that provides smooth natural transformations between Lie groupoid morphisms.

Abstract:Groupoids provide a more appropriate framework for differential geometry than principal bundles. Synthetic differential geometry is the avant-garde branch of differential geometry, in which nilpotent infinitesimals are available in abundance. The principal objective in this paper is to show within our favorite framework of synthetic differential geometry that the tangent space of the group of bisections of a microlinear groupoid at its identity is naturally a Lie algebra. We give essentially distinct two proofs for its Jacobi identity.

Abstract:We introduce the basic notions and present examples and results on Lie categories -- categories internal to the category of smooth manifolds. Demonstrating how the units of a Lie category $\mathcal C$ dictate the behavior of its invertible morphisms $\mathcal G(\mathcal C)$, we develop sufficient conditions for $\mathcal G(\mathcal C)$ to form a Lie groupoid. We show that the construction of Lie algebroids from the theory of Lie groupoids carries through, and ask when the Lie algebroid of $\mathcal G(\mathcal C)$ is recovered. We reveal that the lack of invertibility assumption on morphisms leads to a natural generalization of rank from linear algebra, develop its general properties, and show how the existence of an extension $\mathcal C\hookrightarrow \mathcal G$ of a Lie category to a Lie groupoid affects the ranks of morphisms and the algebroids of $\mathcal C$. Furthermore, certain completeness results for invariant vector fields on Lie monoids and Lie categories with well-behaved boundaries are obtained. Interpreting the developed framework in the context of physical processes, we yield a rigorous approach to the theory of statistical thermodynamics by observing that entropy change, associated to a physical process, is a functor.

Abstract:We define and study multiplicative connections in the tangent bundle of a Lie groupoid. Multiplicative connections are linear connections satisfying an appropriate compatibility with the groupoid structure. Our definition is natural in the sense that a linear connection on a Lie groupoid is multiplicative if and only if its torsion is a multiplicative tensor in the sense of Bursztyn–Drummond [Lie theory of multiplicative tensors, Mat. Ann. 375 (2019) 1489–1554, arXiv:1705.08579] and its geodesic spray is a multiplicative vector field. We identify the obstruction to the existence of a multiplicative connection. We also discuss the infinitesimal version of multiplicative connections in the tangent bundle, that we call infinitesimally multiplicative (IM) connections and we prove an integration theorem for IM connections. Finally, we present a few toy examples.

Isometric Lie 2-group actions on Riemannian groupoids

Abstract:We study isometric actions of Lie $2$-groups on Riemannian groupoids by exhibiting some of their immediate properties and implications. Firstly, we prove an existence result which allows both to obtain 2-equivariant versions of the Slice Theorem and the Equivariant Tubular Neighborhood Theorem and to construct bi-invariant groupoid metrics on compact Lie $2$-groups. We provide natural examples, transfer some classical constructions and explain how this notion of isometric $2$-action yields a way to develop a 2-equivariant Morse theory on Lie groupoids. Secondly, we give an infinitesimal description of an isometric Lie $2$-group action. We define an algebra of transversal infinitesimal isometries associated to any Riemannian $n$-metric on a Lie groupoid which in turn gives rise to a notion of geometric Killing vector field on a quotient Riemannian stack. If our Riemannian stack is separated then we prove that the algebra formed by such geometric Killing vector fields is always finite dimensional.

Smooth Cartan triples and Lie twists over Hausdorff étale Lie groupoids

Abstract:We describe how to recover a Lie structure on a twist over a Hausdorff étale groupoid from functional-analytic data in the spirit of Connes' reconstruction theorem for manifolds. We first characterise when a smooth structure on the unit space of a Hausdorff étale groupoid can be extended to a Lie-groupoid structure on the whole groupoid. We introduce Lie twists over Hausdorff Lie groupoids, building on Kumjian's notion of a twist over a topological groupoid. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions on a family of sections of a twist over a Lie groupoid under which the twist can be made into a Lie twist so that all the specified sections are smooth. We use these results in the setting of twists over étale groupoids to describe conditions on a Cartan pair of C*-algebras and a family of normalisers of the subalgebra, under which Renault's Weyl twist for the pair can be made into a Lie twist for which the given normalisers correspond to smooth sections.

Abstract:A Lie algebroid is a generalization of Lie algebra that provides a general framework to describe the symmetries of a manifold. In this paper, we introduce Lie algebroid index theory and study the Lie algebroid Dolbeault operator. We also introduce Connes' index theory on regular foliated manifolds to obtain a generalized Riemann-Roch theorem on manifolds with regular foliation. We show that the topological side of Connes' index theory can be identified with the topological side of Lie algebroid index theory. Finally, we introduce Lie algebroid Kodaira vanishing theorem, and provide some applications and examples. The Lie algebroid Kodaira vanishing theorem can be used on the analytic side of Connes' theorem to attest to the criterion of a positive line bundle from its topological information.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the introduction of right-invariant Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on Lie groupoids and their infinitesimal counterparts, also known as structures. A Poisson-Nijenhuis structure refers to a combination of a Poisson structure and a Nijenhuis structure. The paper also presents a mutual correspondence between Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on Lie algebroids and Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on their corresponding Lie groupoids, under certain conditions. This correspondence demonstrates a connection between the infinitesimal and global structures. Finally, the paper concludes with an illustrative example to enhance the understanding of the concepts introduced.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of Glanon groupoids, which are Lie groupoids equipped with multiplicative generalized complex structures. It combines symplectic groupoids, holomorphic Lie groupoids and holomorphic Poisson groupoids into a unified framework. Their infinitesimal, Glanon Lie algebroids are studied. We prove that there is a bijection between Glanon Lie algebroids and source-simply connected and source-connected Glanon groupoids. As a consequence, we recover various integration theorem and obtain the integration theorem for holomorphic Poisson groupoids.

A differentiable monoid of smooth maps on Lie groupoids

Abstract:In this article we investigate a monoid of smooth mappings on the space of arrows of a Lie groupoid and its group of units. The group of units turns out to be an infinite-dimensional Lie group which is regular in the sense of Milnor. Furthermore, this group is closely connected to the group of bisections of the Lie groupoid. Under suitable conditions, i.e. the source map of the Lie groupoid is proper, one also obtains a differentiable structure on the monoid and can identify the bisection group as a Lie subgroup of its group of units. Finally, relations between groupoids associated to the underlying Lie groupoid and subgroups of the monoid are obtained. The key tool driving the investigation is a generalisation of a result by A. Stacey which we establish in the present article. This result, called the Stacey-Roberts Lemma, asserts that pushforwards of submersions yield submersions between the infinite-dimensional manifolds of mappings.

Abstract:We consider a problem whether a given Lie group can be realized as the group of all biholomorphic automorphisms of a bounded domain in ${\mathbb C}^n$. In an earlier paper of 1990, the authors proved the result for connected linear Lie groups. In this paper we give examples of non-linear groups for which the result still holds.

Abstract:We revisit the results on admissible transformations between normal linear systems of second-order ordinary differential equations with an arbitrary number of dependent variables under several appropriate gauges of the arbitrary elements parameterizing these systems. For each class from the constructed chain of nested gauged classes of such systems, we single out its singular subclass, which appears to consist of systems being similar to the elementary (free particle) system whereas the regular subclass is the complement of the singular one. This allows us to exhaustively describe the equivalence groupoids of the above classes as well as of their singular and regular subclasses. Applying various algebraic techniques, we establish principal properties of Lie symmetries of the systems under consideration and outline ways for completely classifying these symmetries. In particular, we compute the sharp lower and upper bounds for the dimensions of the maximal Lie invariance algebras possessed by systems from each of the above classes and subclasses. We also show how equivalence transformations and Lie symmetries can be used for reduction of order of such systems and their integration. As an illustrative example of using the theory developed, we solve the complete group classification problems for all these classes in the case of two dependent variables.

On the integrability of Lie algebroids by diffeological spaces

Abstract:Lie's third theorem does not hold for Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. In this article, we show that Lie's third theorem is valid within a specific class of diffeological groupoids that we call `singular Lie groupoids.' To achieve this, we introduce a subcategory of diffeological spaces which we call `quasi-etale.' Singular Lie groupoids are precisely the groupoid objects within this category, where the unit space is a manifold. Our approach involves the construction of a functor that maps singular Lie groupoids to Lie algebroids, extending the classical functor from Lie groupoids to Lie algebroids. We prove that the Ševera-Weinstein groupoid of an algebroid is an example of a singular Lie groupoid, thereby establishing Lie's third theorem in this context.

A duality between Lie algebroids and infinitesimal foliations

Abstract:There are two natural analogues of algebraic foliations in derived algebraic geometry, called partition Lie algebroids and infinitesimal derived foliations, and both make sense in general characteristics. We construct an equivalence between these two notions under some finiteness conditions. Our method is refining the PD Koszul duality in \cite{BM}\cite{BCN} using the (completed) Hodge filtration.

Abstract:This is a survey of basic facts about the differentiable structure of infinite dimensional Lie groups. The groups of diffeomorphisms and of invertible Fourier integral operators on a compact manifold have a structure which is weaker than that of a Lie group in the classical sense. This differentiable structure is called ILH (inverse limit of Hilbert) Lie group. We indicate applications to the well-posedness problem, to hydrodynamics, plasma physics, general relativity, quantum field theory, and completely integrable PDE’s.

Abstract:We study geometric representation theory of Lie algebroids. A new equivalence relation for integrable Lie algebroids is introduced and investigated. It is shown that two equivalent Lie algebroids have equivalent categories of infinitesimal actions of Lie algebroids.
