Abstract:We give an explicit formula for Euler characteristics of line bundles on the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. Combined with structural results of Ellingsrud, Göttsche, and Lehn, this determines the Euler characteristic of any line bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on any smooth, projective surface. We also give an enumerative description of the dimensions of spaces of global sections of ample line bundles on Hilbert schemes of points on Hirzebruch surfaces, extending the polytope-line bundle correspondence on the underlying toric surface.

Abstract:We study lines on smooth cubic surfaces over the field of $p$-adic numbers, from a theoretical and computational point of view. Segre showed that the possible counts of such lines are $0,1,2,3,5,7,9,15$ or $27$. We show that each of these counts is achieved. Probabilistic aspects are also investigated by sampling both $p$-adic and real cubic surfaces from different distributions and estimating the probability of each count. We link this to recent results on probabilistic enumerative geometry. Some experimental results on the Galois groups attached to $p$-adic cubic surfaces are also discussed.

Abstract:The generalized Verlinde formulae expressing traces of mapping classes corresponding to automorphisms of certain Riemann surfaces, and the congruence relations on allowed modular representations following from them are presented. The surfaces considered are families of algebraic curves given by suitably chosen equations, the modular curve $\mathcal{X}(11)$, and a factor curve of $\mathcal{X}(8)$. The examples of modular curves illustrate how the study of arithmetic properties of suitable modular representations can be used to gain information on automorphic properties of Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:We study the moduli space M ~ \widetilde {\mathscr {M}} of marked cubic surfaces. By classical work of A. B. Coble, this has a compactification M ~ \widetilde {M} , which is linearly acted upon by the group W ( E 6 ) W(E_6) . M ~ \widetilde {M} is given as the intersection of 30 cubics in P 9 \mathbf {P}^9 . For the morphism M ~ → P ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ) \widetilde {\mathscr {M}} \to \mathbf {P}(1,2,3,4,5) forgetting the marking, followed by Clebsch’s invariant map, we give explicit formulas, i.e., Clebsch’s invariants are expressed in terms of Coble’s irrational invariants. As an application, we give an affirmative answer to the inverse Galois problem for cubic surfaces over Q \mathbb {Q} .

Abstract:We show that any rational cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 33 vanishes on a projective rational line, reducing the previous lower bound of Wooley by two. The main ingredient is a result on linear spaces on quadratic forms over suitable imaginary quadratic field extensions of $\mathbb Q$.

Abstract:We study a family of moduli spaces and corresponding quantum invariants introduced recently by Fan-Jarvis-Ruan. The family has a wall-and-chamber structure relative to a positive rational parameter is an element of. For a Fermat quasi-homogeneous polynomial W (not necessarily of Calabi-Yau type), we study natural generating functions packaging the invariants. Our wall-crossing formula relates the generating functions by showing that they all lie on the Lagrangian cone associated to the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory of W. For arbitrarily small parameter is an element of, a specialization of our generating function is a hypergeometric series called the big I-function which determines the entire Lagrangian cone. As a special case of our wall-crossing, we obtain a new geometric interpretation of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror theorem.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. Using a construction devised to Gathmann, we present a recursive formula for some of the Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$. We prove that, when $X$ is homogeneous, this formula gives the number of osculating rational curves at a general point of a general hypersurface of $X$. This generalizes the classical well known pairs of inflexion (asymptotic) lines for surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ of Salmon, as well as Darboux's $27$ osculating conics.

Two Formulas for the Number of Lines on Complex Projective Hypersurfaces

Abstract:Two formulas for the classical number $C_n$ of lines on a generic hypersurface of degree $2n-3$ in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ are obtained which differ from the formulas by Dominici, Harris, Libgober, and van der Waerden-Zagier. We review the splitting principle computation by Harris obtaining a similar general closed-form formula in terms of the Catalan numbers and elementary symmetric polynomials. This in turn yields $C_n$ as a linear difference recursion relation of unbounded order. Thus, for the sequence of certain linear combinations of $C_n$, a simple generating function is found. Then, a result from random algebraic geometry by Basu, Lerario, Lundberg, and Peterson, that expresses these classical enumerative invariants as proportional to the Bombieri norm of particular polynomial determinants, yields another combinatorial expansion in terms of certain set compositions and block labeling counting. As an example, we compute this combinatorial interpretation for the cases of 27 lines on a cubic surface and 2875 lines on a quintic threefold. As an application, we reobtain the parity and asymptotic upper bound of the sequence. In an appendix, we generalize the splitting principle calculation to obtain a formula for the number of lines on a generic complete intersection.

Abstract:For a cubic fourfold $ Y $ with associated Fano variety of lines $ F $, we establish several properties of the finite-degree 16 self-rational map $ \psi \colon F \dashrightarrow F $ introduced by Voisin. We begin by analyzing the singularities of the nodal quintic with 16 nodes associated with a general line under the specialization to a line in the branch locus of $ \psi $. This approach reveals that the ramification of the natural resolution of indeterminacy of $ \psi $ is simple. The main part of the paper focuses on the intriguing interplay between $ \psi $ and the fixed locus of the antisymplectic involution on the LLSvS variety $ Z $, examined via the degree 6 Voisin map $ F \times F \dashrightarrow Z $. As an application, we show that the monodromy of $ \psi $ is maximal.

Monodromy in the space of symmetric cubic surfaces with a line

Abstract:We explore the enumerative problem of finding lines on cubic surfaces defined by symmetric polynomials. We prove that the moduli space of symmetric cubic surfaces is an arithmetic quotient of the complex hyperbolic line, and determine constraints on the monodromy group of lines on symmetric cubic surfaces arising from Hodge theory and geometry of the associated cover. This interestingly fails to pin down the entire Galois group. Leveraging computations in equivariant line geometry and homotopy continuation, we prove that the Galois group is the Klein 4-group. This is the first computation in what promises to be an interesting direction of research: studying monodromy in classical enumerative problems restricted by a finite group of symmetries.

Eichler-Selberg relations for singular moduli

Abstract:The Eichler-Selberg trace formula expresses the trace of Hecke operators on spaces of cusp forms as weighted sums of Hurwitz-Kronecker class numbers. We extend this formula to a natural class of relations for traces of singular moduli, where one views class numbers as traces of the constant function $j_0(\tau)=1$. More generally, we consider the singular moduli for the Hecke system of modular functions \[ j_m(\tau) := mT_m \left(j(\tau)-744\right). \] For each $\nu\geq 0$ and $m\geq 1$, we obtain an Eichler-Selberg relation. For $\nu=0$ and $m\in \{1, 2\},$ these relations are Kaneko's celebrated singular moduli formulas for the coefficients of $j(\tau).$ For each $\nu\geq 1$ and $m\geq 1,$ we obtain a new Eichler-Selberg trace formula for the Hecke action on the space of weight $2\nu+2$ cusp forms, where the traces of $j_m(\tau)$ singular moduli replace Hurwitz-Kronecker class numbers. These formulas involve a new term that is assembled from values of symmetrized shifted convolution $L$-functions.

Abstract:The secant varieties of Severi varieties provide special examples of (singular) cubic hypersurfaces. An interesting question asks when a given cubic hypersurface is projectively equivalent to a secant cubic hypersurface. Inspired by the ''geometric'' Torelli theorem for smooth cubic hypersurfaces due to F. Charles, we study the geometry of lines on secant cubics and describe the Fano variety of lines. Then we verify the ''geometric'' Torelli theorem for the case of secant cubics. Namely, a cubic hypersurface is isomorphic to a secant cubic if and only if their Fano varieties of lines are isomorphic.

Abstract:In the present note we study combinatorial and algebraic properties of cubic-line arrangements in the complex projective plane admitting nodes, ordinary triple and $A_{5}$ singular points. Abstract:We combine classical Vinberg's algorithms with the lattice-theoretic/arithmetic approach from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1706.05734" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.05734">arXiv:1706.05734</a> [math.AG] to give a method of classifying large line configurations on complex quasi-polarized K3-surfaces. We apply our method to classify all complex K3-octic surfaces with at worst Du Val singularities and at least 32 lines. The upper bound on the number of lines is 36, as in the smooth case, with at most 32 lines if the singular locus is non-empty.
