Abstract:We prove that the maximal number of conics, a priori irreducible of reducible, on a smooth spatial quartic surface is 800, realized by a unique quartic. We also classify quartics with many (at least 720) conics. The maximal number of real conics on a real quartics is between 656 and 718.

Abstract:We combine classical Vinberg's algorithms with the lattice-theoretic/arithmetic approach from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1706.05734" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.05734">arXiv:1706.05734</a> [math.AG] to give a method of classifying large line configurations on complex quasi-polarized K3-surfaces. We apply our method to classify all complex K3-octic surfaces with at worst Du Val singularities and at least 32 lines. The upper bound on the number of lines is 36, as in the smooth case, with at most 32 lines if the singular locus is non-empty.

Abstract:We analyze the configurations of conics and lines on a special class of Kummer octic surfaces. In particular, we bound the number of conics by 176 and show that there is a unique surface with 176 conics, all irreducible: it admits a faithful action of one of the Mukai groups. Therefore, we also discuss conics and lines on Mukai surfaces: we discover a double plane (ramified at a smooth sextic curve) that contains 8,910 smooth conics.

On quartics with the maximal number of the maximal tangency lines

Abstract:In this note, we examine the arrangements of lines and configurations of points that emerge from Fermat (von Dyck) and Komiya-Kuribayashi quartics. These quartics are characterized by having the maximum number of lines of maximal tangency, that is, lines for which the intersection multiplicity at the tangency point is equal to the degree of the curve. Additionally, we delve into the study of sextactic points on these quartics - points at which there exists a conic with the curve having a local intersection multiplicity of at least 6, which is one more than that observed at a general point - alongside the related configurations of conics.

Abstract:We study lines on smooth cubic surfaces over the field of $p$-adic numbers, from a theoretical and computational point of view. Segre showed that the possible counts of such lines are $0,1,2,3,5,7,9,15$ or $27$. We show that each of these counts is achieved. Probabilistic aspects are also investigated by sampling both $p$-adic and real cubic surfaces from different distributions and estimating the probability of each count. We link this to recent results on probabilistic enumerative geometry. Some experimental results on the Galois groups attached to $p$-adic cubic surfaces are also discussed.

Quatroids and Rational Plane Cubics

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:We prove that a smooth projective surface of degree $d$ in $\mathbb P^3$ contains at most $d^2(d^2-3d+3)$ lines. We characterize the surfaces containing exactly $d^2(d^2-3d+3)$ lines: these occur only in prime characterize $p$ and, up to choice of projective coordinates, are cut out by equations of the form $x^{p^{e}+1}+y^{p^{e}+1}+z^{p^{e}+1}+ w^{p^{e}+1} = 0.$

Abstract:We show that any rational cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 33 vanishes on a projective rational line, reducing the previous lower bound of Wooley by two. The main ingredient is a result on linear spaces on quadratic forms over suitable imaginary quadratic field extensions of $\mathbb Q$.

Two Formulas for the Number of Lines on Complex Projective Hypersurfaces

Abstract:Two formulas for the classical number $C_n$ of lines on a generic hypersurface of degree $2n-3$ in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ are obtained which differ from the formulas by Dominici, Harris, Libgober, and van der Waerden-Zagier. We review the splitting principle computation by Harris obtaining a similar general closed-form formula in terms of the Catalan numbers and elementary symmetric polynomials. This in turn yields $C_n$ as a linear difference recursion relation of unbounded order. Thus, for the sequence of certain linear combinations of $C_n$, a simple generating function is found. Then, a result from random algebraic geometry by Basu, Lerario, Lundberg, and Peterson, that expresses these classical enumerative invariants as proportional to the Bombieri norm of particular polynomial determinants, yields another combinatorial expansion in terms of certain set compositions and block labeling counting. As an example, we compute this combinatorial interpretation for the cases of 27 lines on a cubic surface and 2875 lines on a quintic threefold. As an application, we reobtain the parity and asymptotic upper bound of the sequence. In an appendix, we generalize the splitting principle calculation to obtain a formula for the number of lines on a generic complete intersection.

We show results devoted to smooth plane quartics that are invariant under the action of the elementary abelian group of type $[2,2,2]$, and we study geometric properties of the smooth plane quartic having automorphism group of order $48$.

Abstract:We explore the enumerative problem of finding lines on cubic surfaces defined by symmetric polynomials. We prove that the moduli space of symmetric cubic surfaces is an arithmetic quotient of the complex hyperbolic line, and determine constraints on the monodromy group of lines on symmetric cubic surfaces arising from Hodge theory and geometry of the associated cover. This interestingly fails to pin down the entire Galois group. Leveraging computations in equivariant line geometry and homotopy continuation, we prove that the Galois group is the Klein 4-group. This is the first computation in what promises to be an interesting direction of research: studying monodromy in classical enumerative problems restricted by a finite group of symmetries.

Line configurations and K3 surfaces

Abstract:We study the realization spaces of $10_3$ line configurations. Answering a question posed by Sturmfels in 1991, we use elliptic surface techniques to show that realizations over $\mathbb{Q}$ are dense in those over $\mathbb{R}$ for all $10_3$ configurations. We find that for exactly four of the ten configurations, the realization space admits a compactification by a K3 surface. We show that these have Picard number 20 and compute their discriminants. Finally, we use geometric invariant theory to give an elegant interpretation of these K3 surfaces as moduli spaces.

Abstract:Previous work of the authors showed that every quartic del Pezzo surface over a number field has index dividing $2$, and asked whether such surfaces always have a closed point of degree $2$. We resolve this by constructing infinitely many quartic del Pezzo surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ without degree $2$ points. These are the first examples of smooth intersections of two quadrics with index strictly less than the minimal degree of a closed point.

Abstract:In the present paper, we revisit the geometry of smooth plane quartics and their bitangents from several perspectives. First, we study in detail the weak combinatorics of arrangements of bitangents associated with highly symmetric quartic curves. We consider quartic curves from the point of view of the order of their automorphism groups, in order to establish a lower bound on the number of quadruple intersection points for arrangements of bitangents associated with smooth plane quartics, which are smooth members of Ciani's pencil. We then construct new examples of $3$-syzygy reduced plane curves using smooth plane quartics and their bitangents.

Abstract:We study the problem of classifying the lines of the projective $3$-space $PG(3,q)$ over a finite field $GF(q)$ into orbits of the group $G=PGL(2,q)$ of linear symmetries of the twisted cubic $C$. A generic line neither intersects $C$ nor lies in any of its osculating planes. While the non-generic lines have been classified into $G$-orbits in literature, it has been an open problem to classify the generic lines into $G$-orbits. For a general field $F$ of characteristic different from $2$ and $3$, the twisted cubic determines a symplectic polarity on $\mathbb P^3$. In the Klein representation of lines of $\mathbb P^3$, the tangent lines of $C$ are represented by a degree $4$ rational normal curve in a hyperplane $\mathcal H$ of the second exterior power $\mathbb P^5$ of $\mathbb P^3$. Atiyah studied the lines of $\mathbb P^3$ with respect to $C$, in terms of the geometries of these two curves. Polar duality of lines on $\mathbb P^3$ corresponds to Hodge duality on $\mathbb P^5$, and $\mathcal H$ is the hyperplane of Hodge self-dual elements of $\mathbb P^5$. We show that $\mathcal H$ can be identified in a $PGL_2$-equivariant way with the space of binary quartic forms over $F$, and that pairs of polar dual lines of $\mathbb P^3$ correspond to binary quartic forms whose apolar invariant is a square. We first solve the open problem of classifying binary quartic forms over $GF(q)$ into $G$-orbits, and then use it to solve the main problem.

Rational points on del Pezzo surfaces of low degree

Abstract:We give upper bounds for the number of rational points of bounded anti-canonical height on del Pezzo surfaces of degree at most five over any global field whose characteristic is not equal to two or three. For number fields these results are conditional on a conjecture relating the rank of an elliptic curve to its conductor, while they are unconditional in positive characteristic. For quartic or quintic del Pezzo surfaces with a conic bundle structure, we establish even stronger estimates unconditionally as long as the characteristic is not two.
