Abstract:This paper is an exploration of the faithful transitive permutation representations of the orientation-preserving automorphisms groups of highly symmetric toroidal maps and hypermaps. The main theorems of this paper give a list of all possible degrees of these specific groups. This extends prior accomplishments of the authors, wherein their focus was confined to the study of the automorphisms groups of toroidal regular maps and hypermaps. In addition the authors bring out the recently developed {\sc GAP} package {\sc corefreesub} that can be used to find faithful transitive permutation representations of any group. With the aid of this powerful tool, the authors show how Schreier coset graphs of the automorphism groups of toroidal maps and hypermaps can be easily constructed.

Abstract:For every complete toric variety, there exists a projective toric variety which is isomorphic to it in codimension one. In this paper, we show that every smooth non-projective complete toric threefold of Picard number at most five becomes projective after a finite succession of flops or anti-flips.

Abstract:In this paper we show that a normal affine toric variety X different from the algebraic torus is uniquely determined by its automorphism group in the category of affine irreducible, not necessarily normal, algebraic varieties if and only if X is isomorphic to the product of the affine line and another affine toric variety. In the case where X is the algebraic torus T, we reach the same conclusion if we restrict the category to only include irreducible varieties of dimension at most the dimension of T. There are examples of varieties of dimension one higher than T having the same automorphism group of T. Hence, this last result is optimal.

Abstract:An irrational toric variety X is an analytic subset of the simplex associated to a finite configuration of real vectors. The positive torus acts on X by translation, and we consider limits of sequences of these translations. Our main result identifies all possible Hausdorff limits of translations of X as toric degenerations using elementary methods and the geometry of the secondary fan of the vector configuration. This generalizes work of Garcia-Puente et al., who used algebraic geometry and work of Kapranov, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky, when the vectors were integral.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider local centralizer classification and rigidity of some toral automorphisms. In low dimensions, we classify up to finite index possible centralizers for volume preserving diffeomorphisms -close to an ergodic irreducible toral automorphism . Moreover, we show a rigidity result in the case that the centralizer of is large: if the smooth centralizer is virtually isomorphic to that of then is -conjugate to . In higher dimensions, we show a similar rigidity result for certain irreducible toral automorphisms. We also classify up to finite index all possible centralizers for symplectic diffeomorphisms -close to a class of irreducible symplectic automorphisms on tori of any dimension.

Abstract:In this paper, the concept of toric difference varieties is defined and four equivalent descriptions for toric difference varieties are presented in terms of difference rational parametrization, difference coordinate rings, toric difference ideals, and group actions by difference tori. Connections between toric difference varieties and affine N[x]-semimodules are established by proving the correspondence between the irreducible invariant difference subvarieties and the faces of the N[x]-submodules and the orbit-face correspondence. Finally, an algorithm is given to decide whether a binomial difference ideal represented by a Z[x]-lattice defines a toric difference variety.

Abstract:We obtain a criterion for the automorphism group of an affine toric variety to be connected in combinatorial terms and in terms of the divisor class group of the variety. The component group of the automorphism group of a non-degenerate affine toric variety is described. In particular, we show that the number of connected components of the automorphism group is finite.

Abstract:<p>Motivated by the study of the secant variety of the Segre-Veronese variety we propose a general framework to analyze properties of the secant varieties of toric embeddings of affine spaces defined by simplicial complexes. We prove that every such secant is toric, which gives a way to use combinatorial tools to study singularities. We focus on the Segre-Veronese variety for which we completely classify their secants that give Gorenstein or <span class="math"><math>Q</math></span>-Gorenstein varieties. We conclude providing the explicit description of the singular locus.</p>

Limits of ideals of points in a toric variety

Abstract:We consider the multigraded Hilbert scheme corresponding to the Hilbert function of a finite number of points in general position in a smooth projective complex toric variety. We develop several criteria for a point of that parameter space to be in the distinguished irreducible component. To obtain the criteria we study the behaviour of the locus of saturated ideals under morphisms of multigraded Hilbert schemes. We apply our results to classify the irreducible multigraded Hilbert schemes corresponding to points in general position in a product of projective spaces.

Abstract:In this paper we describe the notion of a toric supervariety, generalizing that of a toric variety from the classical setting. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the category of quasinormal toric supervarieties with one odd dimension using decorated polyhedral fans. We then use this interpretation to calculate some invariants of these supervarieties and extract geometric information from them.

Abstract:Let $X\subset \mathbb P^d$ be a $m$-dimensional variety in $d$-dimensional projective space. Let $k$ be a positive integer such that $\binom{m+k}k \le d$. Consider the following interpolation problem: does there exist a variety $Y\subset \mathbb P^d$ of dimension $\le \binom{m+k}k -1$, with $X\subset Y$, such that the tangent space to $Y$ at a point $p\in X$ is equal to the $k$th osculating space to $X$ at $p$, for almost all points $p\in X$? In this paper we consider this question in the toric setting. We prove that if $X$ is toric, then there is a unique toric variety $Y$ solving the above interpolation problem. We identify $Y$ in the general case and we explicitly compute some of its invariants when $X$ is a toric curve.

Abstract:This work is a natural continuation of our previous work [14]. In this paper, we give a complete classification of toric surface codes of dimension equal to 6, except a special pair, CP6(4) and CP6(5) over F8. Also, we give an example, CP6(5) and CP6(6) over F7, to illustrate that two monomially equivalent toric codes can be constructed from two lattice non-equivalent polygons.

Abstract:Given a hypersurface in a complex projective space, we prove that the multidegrees of its toric polar map agree, up to sign, with the coefficients of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a distinguished open set, namely the complement of the union of the hypersurface and the coordinate hyperplanes. In particular, the degree of the toric polar map is given by the signed topological Euler characteristic of the distinguished open set. For plane curves, a precise formula for the degree of the toric polar map is obtained in terms of local invariants. Finally, we construct families, in arbitrary dimension, of irreducible hypersurfaces whose toric polar map is birational.

Abstract:We propose an effective algorithm that decides if a prime ideal in a polynomial ring over the complex numbers can be transformed into a toric ideal by a linear automorphism of the ambient space. If this is the case, the algorithm computes such a transformation explicitly. The algorithm can compute that all Gaussian graphical models on five vertices that are not initially toric cannot be made toric by any linear change of coordinates. The same holds for all Gaussian conditional independence ideals of undirected graphs on six vertices.
