Abstract:Quality of General Game Playing (GGP) matches suffers from slow state-switching and weak knowledge modules. Instantiation and Propositional Networks offer great performance gains over Prolog-based reasoning, but do not scale well. In this publication mGDL, a variant of GDL stripped of function constants, has been defined as a basis for simple reasoning machines. mGDL allows to easily map rules to C++ functions. 253 out of 270 tested GDL rule sheets conformed to mGDL without any modifications; the rest required minor changes. A revised (m)GDL to C++ translation scheme has been reevaluated; it brought gains ranging from 28% to 7300% over YAP Prolog, managing to compile even demanding rule sheets under few seconds. For strengthening game knowledge, spatial features inspired by similar successful techniques from computer Go have been proposed. For they required an Euclidean metric, a small board extension to GDL has been defined through a set of ground atomic sentences. An SGA-based genetic algorithm has been designed for tweaking game parameters and conducting self-plays, so the features could be mined from meaningful game records. The approach has been tested on a small cluster, giving performance gains up to 20% more wins against the baseline UCT player. Implementations of proposed ideas constitutes the core of GGP Spatium - a small C++/Python GGP framework, created for developing compact GGP Players and problem solvers.
A Language for Generic Programming in the Large

Abstract:Generic programming is an effective methodology for developing reusable software libraries. Many programming languages provide generics and have features for describing interfaces, but none completely support the idioms used in generic programming. To address this need we developed the language G. The central feature of G is the concept, a mechanism for organizing constraints on generics that is inspired by the needs of modern C++ libraries. G provides modular type checking and separate compilation (even of generics). These characteristics support modular software development, especially the smooth integration of independently developed components. In this article we present the rationale for the design of G and demonstrate the expressiveness of G with two case studies: porting the Standard Template Library and the Boost Graph Library from C++ to G. The design of G shares much in common with the concept extension proposed for the next C++ Standard (the authors participated in its design) but there are important differences described in this article.

Programming Languages for Generative Design: A Comparative Study

Abstract:In the field of Generative Design (GD), Visual Programming Languages (VPLs), such as Grasshopper, are becoming increasingly popular compared to the traditional Textual Programming Languages (TPLs) provided by CAD applications, such as RhinoScript. This reaction is explained by the relative obsolescence of these TPLs and the faster learning curve of VPLs. However, modern TPLs offer a variety of linguistic features designed to overcome the limitations of traditional TPLs, making them hypothetical competitors to VPLs. In this paper, we reconsider the role of TPLs in the design process and we present a comparative study of VPLs and modern TPLs. Our findings show that modern TPLs can be more productive than VPLs, especially, for large-scale and complex design tasks. Finally, we identify some problems of modern TPLs related to portability and sharing of programs and we propose a solution.

PyGGI 2.0: language independent genetic improvement framework

Abstract:PyGGI is a research tool for Genetic Improvement (GI), that is designed to be versatile and easy to use. We present version 2.0 of PyGGI, the main feature of which is an XML-based intermediate program representation. It allows users to easily define GI operators and algorithms that can be reused with multiple target languages. Using the new version of PyGGI, we present two case studies. First, we conduct an Automated Program Repair (APR) experiment with the QuixBugs benchmark, one that contains defective programs in both Python and Java. Second, we replicate an existing work on runtime improvement through program specialisation for the MiniSAT satisfiability solver. PyGGI 2.0 was able to generate a patch for a bug not previously fixed by any APR tool. It was also able to achieve 14% runtime improvement in the case of MiniSAT. The Ludii Game Description Language is Universal

Abstract:There are several different game description languages (GDLs), each intended to allow wide ranges of arbitrary games (i.e., general games) to be described in a single higher-level language than general-purpose programming languages. Games described in such formats can subsequently be presented as challenges for automated general game playing agents, which are expected to be capable of playing any arbitrary game described in such a language without prior knowledge about the games to be played. The language used by the Ludii general game system was previously shown to be capable of representing equivalent games for any arbitrary, finite, deterministic, fully observable extensive-form game. In this paper, we prove its universality by extending this to include finite non-deterministic and imperfect-information games.

Abstract:Abstract Disjunctive logic programming (DLP) is a very expressive formalism. It allows for expressing every property of finite structures that is decidable in the complexity class Σ P 2 (=NP NP ). Despite this high expressiveness, there are some simple properties, often arising in real-world applications, which cannot be encoded in a simple and natural manner. Especially properties that require the use of arithmetic operators (like sum, times, or count) on a set or multiset of elements, which satisfy some conditions, cannot be naturally expressed in classic DLP. To overcome this deficiency, we extend DLP by aggregate functions in a conservative way. In particular, we avoid the introduction of constructs with disputed semantics, by requiring aggregates to be stratified. We formally define the semantics of the extended language (called ), and illustrate how it can be profitably used for representing knowledge. Furthermore, we analyze the computational complexity of , showing that the addition of aggregates does not bring a higher cost in that respect. Finally, we provide an implementation of in DLV—a state-of-the-art DLP system—and report on experiments which confirm the usefulness of the proposed extension also for the efficiency of computation.

Abstract:Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), implemented through self-driving laboratories (SDLs), are rapidly creating unprecedented opportunities for the accelerated discovery and optimization of materials. This paper provides a joint analysis of SDLs from both academic and industry perspectives, highlighting the importance of integrating human intelligence in these systems. It discusses the necessity of careful planning in SDL design across physical, data, and workflow dimensions, including instrumental setup, experimental workflow, data management, and human-SDL interaction. The significance of integrating human input within SDLs, especially as the focus shifts from individual tools and tasks to the creation and management of complex workflows, is emphasized. The paper stresses the crucial role of reward function design in developing forward-looking workflows and examines the interplay between hardware evolution, ML application across chemical processes, and the influence of reward systems in research. Ultimately, the article advocates for a future where SDLs blend human intuition in hypothesis formulation with AI's precision, speed, and data-handling capabilities.

Towards the Practical Adoption of LIDL: A Toolchain for Modeling Human-Machine Interface Software Interactions

Abstract:The design and implementation of safety-critical human-machine interface (HMI) software typically follow the model-driven development process to guarantee secure reliability pragmatically. Systematic and comprehensive modeling for interactions involved in HMI software is essential when applying the model-driven approach. LIDL Interaction Description Language (LIDL) is an interaction description language well suited to HMI software interaction modeling. Several problems limit the practical adoption of LIDL. LIDL does not have a visual modeling language or debugging tools, resulting in error-prone and inefficient modeling. In addition, there is no toolchain to connect it to the subsequent steps in model-driven development, such as verification and implementation. This paper presents a toolchain developed for LIDL to alleviate the problems it faces in practice. The toolchain consists of three tools, a visual modeling tool, a compiler translating LIDL code to Lustre, and a LIDL debugger. We design the visual modeling tool and debugger to improve LIDL modeling efficiency and the compiler to support the debugger and integrate the LIDL modeling into the whole model-driven development process of the HMI software. Specifically, the modeling tool uses tables and diagrams to visualize LIDL code, pragmatically reducing the possibility of introducing modeling errors while maintaining the semantics of LIDL code. We add management features to LIDL models to form a library of model components that modelers can reuse easily. The modeling tool can also automatically convert LIDL models created by modelers into LIDL code. The debugger helps modelers debug LIDL code to locate problems in the model and correct them quickly.

Abstract:We report on status and perspectives of the International Lattice Data Grid. ILDG was established some twenty years ago as a community-wide initiative to enable the sharing of gauge configurations generated by many major lattice collaborations. After a phase in which availability and usage of services had degraded, an effort to modernize and reactivate ILDG 2.0 has been started. The initiative has made important progress and we can look forward to larger and fully FAIR data sets becoming available to a wider audience.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview and features of an Analysis Description Language (ADL) designed for HEP data analysis. ADL is a domain specific, declarative language that describes the physics content of an analysis in a standard and unambiguous way, independent of any computing frameworks. It also describes infrastructures that render ADL executable, namely CutLang, a direct runtime interpreter (originally also a language), and adl2tnm, a transpiler converting ADL into C++ code. In ADL, analyses are described in human readable plain text files, clearly separating object, variable and event selection definitions in blocks, with a syntax that includes mathematical and logical operations, comparison and optimisation operators, reducers, four-vector algebra and commonly used functions. Recent studies demonstrate that adapting the ADL approach has numerous benefits for the experimental and phenomenological HEP communities. These include facilitating the abstraction, design, optimization, visualization, validation, combination, reproduction, interpretation and overall communication of the analysis contents and long term preservation of the analyses beyond the lifetimes of experiments. Here we also discuss some of the current ADL applications in physics studies and future prospects based on static analysis and differentiable programming.

DirectGPT: A Direct Manipulation Interface to Interact with Large Language Models

Abstract:We characterize and demonstrate how the principles of direct manipulation can improve interaction with large language models. This includes: continuous representation of generated objects of interest; reuse of prompt syntax in a toolbar of commands; manipulable outputs to compose or control the effect of prompts; and undo mechanisms. This idea is exemplified in DirectGPT, a user interface layer on top of ChatGPT that works by transforming direct manipulation actions to engineered prompts. A study shows participants were 50% faster and relied on 50% fewer and 72% shorter prompts to edit text, code, and vector images compared to baseline ChatGPT. Our work contributes a validated approach to integrate LLMs into traditional software using direct manipulation. ReGAL: Refactoring Programs to Discover Generalizable Abstractions

Abstract:While large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being used for program synthesis, they lack the global view needed to develop useful abstractions; they generally predict programs one at a time, often repeating the same functionality. Generating redundant code from scratch is both inefficient and error-prone. To address this, we propose Refactoring for Generalizable Abstraction Learning (ReGAL), a gradient-free method for learning a library of reusable functions via code refactorization, i.e., restructuring code without changing its execution output. ReGAL learns from a small set of existing programs, iteratively verifying and refining its abstractions via execution. We find that the shared function libraries discovered by ReGAL make programs easier to predict across diverse domains. On five datasets -- LOGO graphics generation, Date reasoning, TextCraft (a Minecraft-based text-game) MATH, and TabMWP -- both open-source and proprietary LLMs improve in accuracy when predicting programs with ReGAL functions. For CodeLlama-13B, ReGAL results in absolute accuracy increases of 11.5% on LOGO, 26.1% on date understanding, and 8.1% on TextCraft, outperforming GPT-3.5 in two of three domains. Our analysis reveals ReGAL's abstractions encapsulate frequently-used subroutines as well as environment dynamics.

Abstract:The current work has limitations in using GDL to represent domain knowledge for Automated Negotiations, which does not support imperfect information games in negotiation scenarios. In this paper, we expand the GDL and improve the automatic negotiation model so that the framework can describe the negotiation scenarios of imperfect information, and each agent can reason according to the domain knowledge we describe. Through examples, we prove that EGDL is an effective method to represent domain knowledge for Automated Negotiations of imperfect information game, and through experiments, we prove that each agent has higher utilities after negotiations.

Abstract:While current General Game Playing (GGP) systems facilitate useful research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for game-playing, they are often somewhat specialised and computationally inefficient. In this paper, we describe the "ludemic" general game system Ludii, which has the potential to provide an efficient tool for AI researchers as well as game designers, historians, educators and practitioners in related fields. Ludii defines games as structures of ludemes -- high-level, easily understandable game concepts -- which allows for concise and human-understandable game descriptions. We formally describe Ludii and outline its main benefits: generality, extensibility, understandability and efficiency. Experimentally, Ludii outperforms one of the most efficient Game Description Language (GDL) reasoners, based on a propositional network, in all games available in the Tiltyard GGP repository. Moreover, Ludii is also competitive in terms of performance with the more recently proposed Regular Boardgames (RBG) system, and has various advantages in qualitative aspects such as generality.

Abstract:A distributed graphics programming language called DGLa is presented, which facilitates the development of distributed graphics application. Facilities for distributed programming and graphics support are included in it. It not only supports synchronous and asynchronous communication but also provides programmer with multiple control mechanism for process communication. The graphics support of DGLa is powerful, for both sequential graphics library and parallel graphics library are provided. The design consideration and implementation experience are discussed in detail in this paper. Application example are also given.

Abstract:Generative adversarial imitation learning (GAIL) regards imitation learning (IL) as a distribution matching problem between the state-action distributions of the expert policy and the learned policy. In this paper, we focus on the generalization and computational properties of policy classes. We prove that the generalization can be guaranteed in GAIL when the class of policies is well controlled. With the capability of policy generalization, we introduce distributional reinforcement learning (RL) into GAIL and propose the greedy distributional soft gradient (GDSG) algorithm to solve GAIL. The main advantages of GDSG can be summarized as: (1) Q-value overestimation, a crucial factor leading to the instability of GAIL with off-policy training, can be alleviated by distributional RL. (2) By considering the maximum entropy objective, the policy can be improved in terms of performance and sample efficiency through sufficient exploration. Moreover, GDSG attains a sublinear convergence rate to a stationary solution. Comprehensive experimental verification in MuJoCo environments shows that GDSG can mimic expert demonstrations better than previous GAIL variants.

With GPRbuild the making of shared object files is fully automated and the software can be readily used in Python and Julia. Abstract:Modern population genomic datasets hold immense promise for revealing the evolutionary processes operating in natural populations, but a crucial prerequisite for this goal is the ability to model realistic evolutionary scenarios and predict their expected patterns in genomic data. To that end, we present SLiM 2: an evolutionary simulation framework that combines a powerful, fast engine for forward population genetic simulations with the capability of modeling a wide variety of complex evolutionary scenarios. SLiM achieves this flexibility through scriptability, which provides control over most aspects of the simulated evolutionary scenarios with a simple R-like scripting language called Eidos. An example SLiM simulation is presented to illustrate the power of this approach. SLiM 2 also includes a graphical user interface for simulation construction, interactive runtime control, and dynamic visualization of simulation output, facilitating easy and fast model development with quick prototyping and visual debugging. We conclude with a performance comparison between SLiM and two other popular forward genetic simulation packages.

A Genre-Specific Game Description Language for Game Boy RPGs

Abstract:Existing game description languages (GDLs) aspire to generality, but their focus on the specification of low-level mechanics leaves game generators that target these GDLs in the awkward position of having to invent combinations of mechanics that work well together from scratch. As a result, many existing game generators are good at producing games that contain novel and surprising combinations of mechanics, but bad at generating games that are readily interpretable by players as cultural artifacts. To address this problem, we introduce the concept of a genre-specific game description language (GSGDL): a game description language that deliberately encodes assumptions about a particular genre of games as a cultural form. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate the use of an internal representation of game structure used by the game creation tool GB Studio as a GSGDL for top-down 2D roleplaying games targeting the Game Boy. The use of this GSGDL gives us leverage to rapidly iterate on game generation features targeting a specific game genre and platform; to work with an existing toolchain that offers graphical editing, code generation, and automated play testing; and to more readily generate games that are interpretable by players as examples of a particular cultural form.

Abstract:Structural comparison of state machine models – such as labeled transition systems and (extended) finite automata – is used for numerous applications, such as finding potential behavioral regressions in new software versions, evaluating the accuracy of different model learning algorithms, and fingerprinting software for security applications. The state-of-the-art LTSDiff structural comparison algorithm has limited assumptions, making it broadly applicable. However, representation-specific information is not taken into account, requiring adaptations to prevent sub-optimal or even invalid results. We introduce gLTSdiff, which generalizes and extends LTSDiff, allowing a wide range of state machine models to be compared, by recursively comparing over the structure of state and transition labels. Additional challenges that we faced while applying LTSDiff in industrial practice are also addressed by gLTSdiff, as it rewrites undesired difference patterns, supports comparison of any number of input models, and allows for an effort/quality trade-off. We formally define gLTSdiff, and make it available as an extensible open source library for structural model comparison. Using multiple large-scale industrial and open source case studies, we evaluate both its practical value and its various improvements.
