Abstract:For an arbitrary negative Schwarzian unimodal map with non-flat critical point, we establish the level-2 Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for empirical distributions. We also give an example of a multimodal map for which the level-2 LDP does not hold.

Sample-Path Large Deviations for Lévy Processes and Random Walks with Lognormal Increments

Abstract:The large deviations theory for heavy-tailed processes has seen significant advances in the recent past. In particular, Rhee et al. (2019) and Bazhba et al. (2020) established large deviation asymptotics at the sample-path level for Lévy processes and random walks with regularly varying and (heavy-tailed) Weibull-type increments. This leaves the lognormal case -- one of the three most prominent classes of heavy-tailed distributions, alongside regular variation and Weibull -- open. This article establishes the \emph{extended large deviation principle} (extended LDP) at the sample-path level for one-dimensional Lévy processes and random walks with lognormal-type increments. Building on these results, we also establish the extended LDPs for multi-dimensional processes with independent coordinates. We demonstrate the sharpness of these results by constructing counterexamples, thereby proving that our results cannot be strengthened to a standard LDP under $J_1$ topology and $M_1'$ topology.

Abstract:We prove a large deviations principle for the probabilistic Schwarzian Field Theory at low temperatures. We demonstrate that the good rate function is equal to the action of the Schwarzian Field Theory, and we find its minimisers. In addition, we define an analogue of the Hölder condition on the functional space $\mathrm{Diff}^1(\mathbb{T})/\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ in terms of cross-ratio observables, characterise them in terms of the usual Hölder property on the space of continuous functions, and deduce the corresponding compact embedding theorem. We also show that the Schwarzian measure concentrates on functions satisfying the defined condition.

Abstract:We consider level-2 large deviations for the one-sided countable full shift without assuming the existence of Bowen's Gibbs state. To deal with non-compact closed sets, we provide a sufficient condition in terms of inducing which ensures the exponential tightness of a sequence of Borel probability measures constructed from periodic configurations. Under this condition we establish the level-2 Large Deviation Principle. We apply our results to the continued fraction expansion of real numbers in $[0,1)$ generated by the Rényi map, and obtain the level-2 Large Deviation Principle, as well as a weighted equidistribution of a set of quadratic irrationals to equilibrium states of the Rényi map.

Abstract:We obtain sample-path large deviations for a class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations with bounded drifts and heavy-tailed Lévy processes. These heavy-tailed Lévy processes do not satisfy the exponential integrability condition, which is a common restriction on the Lévy processes in existing large deviations contents. We further prove that the solution processes satisfy a weak large deviation principle with a discrete rate function and logarithmic speed. We also show that they do not satisfy the full large deviation principle.

Abstract:We derive a large deviation principle for families of random variables in the basin of attraction of spectrally positive stable distributions by proving a uniform version of the Tauberian theorem for Laplace-Stieltjes transforms. The main advantage of this method is that it can be easily applied to cases that are beyond the reach of the techniques currently used in the literature, such as random walks with long-ranged memory kernels or randomly stopped sums where the random time is not concentrated around its expectation. The method reveals the role of the characteristic function when Cramér's condition is violated and provides a unified approach within regular variation.

On the large deviation principle for Metropolis-Hastings Markov Chains: the Lyapunov function condition and examples

Abstract:With an aim to analyse the performance of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, in our recent work we derive a large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical measures of Metropolis-Hastings (MH) chains on a continuous state space. One of the (sufficient) assumptions for the LDP involves the existence of a particular type of Lyapunov function, and it was left as an open question whether or not such a function exists for specific choices of MH samplers. In this paper we analyse the properties of such Lyapunov functions and investigate their existence for some of the most popular choices of MCMC samplers built on MH dynamics: Independent Metropolis Hastings, Random Walk Metropolis, and the Metropolis-adjusted Langevin algorithm. We establish under what conditions such a Lyapunov function exists, and from this obtain LDPs for some instances of the MCMC algorithms under consideration. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first large deviation results for empirical measures associated with Metropolis-Hastings chains for specific choices of proposal and target distributions.

Abstract:Expanding Thurston maps were introduced by M. Bonk and D. Meyer with motivation from complex dynamics and Cannon's conjecture from geometric group theory via Sullivan's dictionary. In this paper, we show that the entropy map of an expanding Thurston map is upper semi-continuous if and only if the map has no periodic critical points. For all expanding Thurston maps, even in the presence of periodic critical points, we show that ergodic measures are entropy-dense and establish level-2 large deviation principles for the distribution of Birkhoff averages, periodic points, and iterated preimages. It follows that iterated preimages and periodic points are equidistributed with respect to the unique equilibrium state for an expanding Thurston map and a potential that is Hölder continuous with respect to a visual metric on $S^2$. In particular, our results answer two questions in [Li15]. The main technical tools in this paper are called subsystems of expanding Thurston maps, inspired by a translation of the notion of subgroups via Sullivan's dictionary.

Abstract:We consider the simple random walk on the Euclidean lattice, in three dimensions and higher, conditioned to visit fewer sites than expected, when the deviation from the mean scales like the mean. The associated large deviation principle was first derived in 2001 by van den Berg, Bolthausen and den Hollander in the continuous setting, that is for the volume of a Wiener sausage, and later taken up by Phetpradap in the discrete setting. One of the key ideas in their work is to condition the range of the random walk to a certain skeleton, that is a sub-sequence of the random walk path taken along an appropriate mesoscopic scale. In this paper we prove that (i) the rate function obtained by van den Berg, Bolthausen and den Hollander has a unique minimizer over the set of probability measures modulo shifts, at least for deviations of the range well below the mean, and (ii) the empirical measure of the skeleton converges under the conditioned law, in a certain manner, to this minimizer. To this end we use an adaptation of the topology recently introduced by Mukherjee and Varadhan to compactify the space of probability measures.

Furthermore, we prove large deviations principles for the increments of such processes on intervals $[a,b]$ where $b-a$ is either less than the increment or twice the increment, assuming stationarity of the increments. As a chief example, we consider fractional Brownian motion and fractional Gaussian noise for $H\geq 1/2$.

Abstract:Using the weak convergence approach, we prove the large deviation principle (LDP) for solutions to quasilinear stochastic evolution equations with small Gaussian noise in the critical variational setting, a recently developed general variational framework. No additional assumptions are made apart from those required for well-posedness. In particular, no monotonicity is required, nor a compact embedding in the Gelfand triple. Moreover, we allow for flexible growth of the diffusion coefficient, including gradient noise. This leads to numerous applications for which the LDP was not established yet, in particular equations on unbounded domains with gradient noise.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the large deviation principle (LDP) for stochastic differential equations driven by stochastic integrals in one dimension. The result can be proved with a minimal use of rough path theory, and this implies the LDP for many class of rough volatility models, and it characterizes the asymptotic behavior of implied volatility. First, we introduce a new concept called $\alpha$-Uniformly Exponentially Tightness, and prove the LDP for stochastic integrals on Hölder spaces. Second, we apply this type of LDP to deduce the LDP for stochastic differential equations driven by stochastic integrals in one dimension.

Abstract:We establish a law of large numbers for a certain class of vector-valued linear statistics for the Bergman determinantal point process on the unit disk. Our result seems to be the first LLN for vector-valued linear statistics in the setting of determinantal point processes. As an application, we prove that, for almost all configurations $X$ with respect to with respect to the Bergman determinantal point process, the weighted Poincaré series (we denote by $d_{h}(\cdot,\cdot)$ the hyperbolic distance on $\mathbb{D}$) \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^\infty\sum_{x\in X\atop k\le d_{h}(z,x)<k+1}e^{-sd_{\mathrm{h}}(z,x)}f(x) \end{align*} cannot be simultaneously convergent for all Bergman functions $f\in A^2(\mathbb{D})$ whenever $1<s<3/2$. This confirms a result announced without proof in Bufetov-Qiu's work.

Abstract:These notes survey the first results on large deviations of Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLE) with emphasis on interrelations between rate functions and applications to complex analysis. More precisely, we describe the large deviations of SLE$_\kappa$ when the $\kappa$ parameter goes to zero in the chordal and multichordal case and to infinity in the radial case. The rate functions, namely Loewner and Loewner-Kufarev energies, are closely related to the Weil-Petersson class of quasicircles and real rational functions.

Abstract:One-dimensional run-and-tumble processes may converge towards some localized non-equilibrium steady state when the two velocities and/or the two switching rates are space-dependent. A long dynamical trajectory can be then analyzed via the large deviations at Level 2.5 for the joint probability of the empirical densities, of the empirical spatial currents and of the empirical switching flows. The Level 2 for the empirical densities alone can be then derived via the optimization of the Level 2.5 over the empirical flows. More generally, the large deviations of any time-additive observable can be also obtained via contraction from the Level 2.5, or equivalently via the deformed generator method and the corresponding Doob conditioned process. Finally, the large deviations for the empirical intervals between consecutive switching events can be obtained via the introduction of the alternate Markov chain that governs the series of all the switching events of a long trajectory.

Abstract:We combine hydrodynamic and modulated energy techniques to study the large deviations of systems of particles with pairwise singular repulsive interactions and additive noise. Specifically, we examine periodic Riesz interactions indexed by parameter $\mathbf{s}\in[0,d-2)$ for $d\geq 3$ on the torus. When $\mathbf{s}\in(0,d-2)$, we establish a large deviation principle (LDP) upper bound and partial lower bound given sufficiently strong convergence of the initial conditions. When $\mathbf{s}=0$ (i.e., the interaction potential is logarithmic), we prove that a complete LDP holds. Additionally, we show a local LDP holds in the distance defined by the modulated energy.

Flexibility of entropies for piecewise expanding unimodal maps

Abstract:We investigate the flexibility of the entropy (topological and metric) for the class of piecewise expanding unimodal maps. We show that the only restrictions for the values of the topological and metric entropies in this class are that both are positive, the topological entropy is at most $\log 2$, and by the Variational Principle, the metric entropy is not larger than the topological entropy. In order to have a better control on the metric entropy, we work mainly with topologically mixing piecewise expanding skew tent maps, for which there are only 2 different slopes. For those maps, there is an additional restriction that the topological entropy is larger than $\frac{1}{2}\log2$. We also make the interesting observation that for skew tent maps the sum of reciprocals of derivatives of all iterates of the map at the critical value is zero. It is a generalization and a different interpretation of the Milnor-Thurston formula connecting the topological entropy and the kneading determinant for unimodal maps.
