Abstract:We characterize the Diederich-Fornaess index and the Steinness index in terms of a special 1-form, which we call D'Angelo 1-form. We then prove that the Diederich-Fornaess and Steinness indices are invariant under CR-diffeomorphisms by showing CR-invariance of D'Angelo 1-forms.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of Steinness index related to the Stein neighborhood basis. We then show several results: (1) The existence of Steinness index is equivalent to that of strong Stein neighborhood basis. (2) On the Diederich–Fornæss worm domains in particular, we present an explicit formula relating the Steinness index to the well-known Diederich–Fornæss index. (3) The Steinness index is 1 if a smoothly bounded pseudoconvex domain admits finitely many boundary points of infinite type.
Improved Hardy and Rellich Inequalities on Nonreversible Finsler Manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we study the sharp constants of quantitative Hardy and Rellich inequalities on nonreversible Finsler manifolds equipped with arbitrary measures. In particular, these inequalities can be globally refined by adding remainder terms like the Brezis–Vázquez improvement, if Finsler manifolds are of strictly negative flag curvature, vanishing S-curvature and finite uniformity constant. Furthermore, these results remain valid when Finsler metrics are reversible.
On a CR Family of Compact Strongly Pseudoconvex CR Manifolds

Abstract:We study the simultaneous filling and embedding problem for a CR family of compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension at least 5. We also derive, as a consequence, the normality of the Stein fibers of the filled-in Stein space under the constant dimensionality assumption of the first Kohn-Rossi cohomology group of the fiber CR manifolds. Two main ingredients for our approach are the work of Catlin on the solution of the ∂-equation with mixed boundary conditions and the work of Siu and Ling on the study of the Grauert direct image theory for a (1,1)-convex-concave family of complex spaces.

Abstract:Let X-1 and X-2 be two compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension 2n - 1 >= 5 which are boundaries of complex varieties V-1 and V-2 with only isolated normal singularities in C-N1 and C-N2, respectively. We show that any nonconstant CR morphism from X-1 to X-2 can be extended to a finite holomorphic covering map from V-1 to V-2 in the case where V-2 has only isolated complete intersection singularities. In particular, there is no nonconstant CR morphism between the links of two isolated complete intersection singularities with different embedding codimensions. Finally, using Kohn-Rossi cohomology, we obtain some sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of CR morphisms from X-1 to X-2.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points must be large, and in the case of codimension 2, necessarily Levi-flat or complex. We also show that there exist real-analytic CR functions on such images that satisfy the tangential CR conditions at the singular points, yet fail to extend to holomorphic functions in a neighborhood. We provide many examples to illustrate the phenomena that arise.

Abstract:We consider 1-forms on, so called, essentially isolated determinantal singularities (a natural generalization of isolated ones), show how to define analogues of the Poincaré--Hopf index for them, and describe relations between these indices and the radial index. For isolated determinantal singularities, we discuss properties of the homological index of a holomorphic 1-form and its relation with the Poincaré--Hopf index.

Abstract:For a small deformation Phi of a 3-dimensional pseudoconvex embeddable CR-structure of finite type, we prove that Phi defines an embeddable CR-structure if and only if the Szego projection from ker (Phi)partial derivative(b) to ker partial derivative(b) is a Fredholm operator. This defines a relative index which is in this case equal to the negative of number of small eigenvalues of the operator (Phi)partial derivative(b)*(Phi)partial derivative(b). Abstract:In this article we study an integral invariant which obstructs the existence on a compact complex manifold of a volume form with the determinant of its Ricci form proportional to itself, in particular obstructs the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric, and has been studied since 1980s. We study this invariant from the view point of locally conformally Kähler geometry. We first see that we can define an integral invariant for coverings of compact complex manifolds with automorphic volume forms. This situation typically occurs for locally conformally Kähler manifolds. Secondly, we see that this invariant coincides with the former one. We also show that the invariant vanishes for any compact Vaisman manifold.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the concept of inflexible $CR$ submanifolds. These are $CR$ submanifolds of some complex Euclidean space such that any compactly supported $CR$ deformation is again globally $CR$ embeddable into some complex Euclidean space. Our main result is that any $2$-pseudoconcave quadratic $CR$ submanifold of type $(n,d)$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$ is inflexible.

Geometric inequalities for CR-submanifolds

Abstract:We study two kinds of curvature invariants of Riemannian manifold equip\-ped with a complex distribution $D$ (for example, a CR-submanifold of an almost Hermitian manifold) related to sets of pairwise orthogonal subspaces of the distribution. One kind of invariant is based on the mutual curvature of the subspaces and another is similar to Chen's $\delta$-invariants. We compare the mutual curvature invariants with Chen-type invariants and prove geometric inequalities with intermediate mean curvature squared for CR-submanifolds in almost Hermitian spaces. In the case of a set of complex planes, we introduce and study curvature invariants based on the concept of holomorphic bisectional curvature. As applications, we give consequences of the absence of some $D$-minimal CR-submanifolds in almost Hermitian manifolds.

Abstract:This paper explores the intrinsic nature of the celebrated Stein-Weiss $H^1$-inequality $$ \|I_s u\|_{L^\frac{n}{n-s}}\lesssim \|u\|_{L^1}+\|\vec{R}u\|_{L^{1}}=\|u\|_{H^1} $$ through the tracing and duality laws based on Riesz's singular integral operator $I_s$. We discover that $f\in I_s\big([\mathring{H}^{s,1}_{-}]^\ast\big)$ if and only if $\exists\ \vec{g}=(g_1,...,g_n)\in \big(L^\infty\big)^n$ such that $f=\vec{R}\cdot\vec{g}=\sum_{j=1}^n R_jg_j$ in $\mathrm{BMO}$ (the John-Nirenberg space introduced in their 1961 {\it Comm. Pure Appl. Math.} paper \cite{JN}) where $\vec{R}=(R_1,...,R_n)$ is the vector-valued Riesz transform - this characterizes the Riesz transform part $\vec{R}\cdot\big(L^\infty\big)^n$ of Fefferman-Stein's decomposition (established in their 1972 {\it Acta Math} paper \cite{FS}) for $\mathrm{BMO}=L^\infty+\vec{R}\cdot\big(L^\infty\big)^n$ and yet indicates that $I_s\big([\mathring{H}^{s,1}_-]^\ast\big)$ is indeed a solution to Bourgain-Brezis' problem under $n\ge 2$: ``What are the function spaces $X, W^{1,n}\subset X\subset \mathrm{BMO}$, such that every $F\in X$ has a decomposition $F=\sum_{j=1}^n R_j Y_j$ where $Y_j\in L^\infty$?" (posed in their 2003 {\it J. Amer. Math. Soc.} paper \cite{BB}).

Abstract:An explicit classification of simply connected compact homogeneous CR manifolds G/L of codimension one, with non-degenerate Levi form, is given. There are three classes of such manifolds: a) the standard CR homogeneous manifolds which are homogeneous S^1-bundles over a flag manifold F, with CR structure induced by an invariant complex structure on F; b) the Morimoto-Nagano spaces, i.e. sphere bundles $S(N)\subset TN$ of a compact rank one symmetric space N = G/H, with the CR structure induced by the natural complex structure of $TN = G^\C/H^\C$; c) the following manifolds: $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_{n-2}$, $SU_p\times SU_q/T^1 \cdot U_{p-2}\cdot U_{q-2}$, $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_{n-4}$, $SO_{10}/T^1\cdot SO_6$, $E_6/T^1\cdot SO_8$; these manifolds admit canonical holomorphic fibrations over a flag manifold (F,J_F) with typical fiber S(S^k), where k = 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9, respectively; the CR structure is determined by the invariant complex structure J_F on F and by an invariant CR structure on the typical fiber, depending on one complex parameter.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact connected CR manifold with a transversal CR $S^1$-action of real dimension $2n-1$, which is only assumed to be weakly pseudoconvex. Let $\Box_b$ be the $\overline{\partial}_b$-Laplacian, with respect to a $T$-rigid Hermitian metric (see Definition 3.2 of $T$-rigid Hermitian metric). Eigenvalue estimate of $\Box_b$ is a fundamental issue both in CR geometry and analysis. In this paper, we are able to obtain a sharp estimate of the number of eigenvalues smaller than or equal to $\lambda$ of $\Box_b$ acting on the $m$-th Fourier components of smooth $(n-1,q)$-forms on $X$, where $m\in \mathbb{Z}_+$ and $q=0,1,\cdots, n-1$. Here the sharp means the growth order with respect to $m$ is sharp. In particular, when $\lambda=0$, we obtain the asymptotic estimate of the growth for $m$-th Fourier components $H^{n-1,q}_{b,m}(X)$ of $H^{n-1,q}_b(X)$ as $m \rightarrow +\infty$. Furthermore, we establish a Serre type duality theorem for Fourier components of Kohn-Rossi cohomology which is of independent interest. As a byproduct, the asymptotic growth of the dimensions of the Fourier components $H^{0,q}_{b,-m}(X)$ for $ m\in \mathbb{Z}_+$ is established. We also give appilcations of our main results, including Morse type inequalities, asymptotic Riemann-Roch type theorem, Grauert-Riemenscheider type criterion, and an orbifold version of our main results which provides an answer towards a folklore open problem informed to us by Hsiao.

Abstract:Among those transversally elliptic operators initiated by Atiyah and Singer, Kohn's $\Box_b$ operator on CR manifolds with $S^1$ action is a natural one of geometric significance for complex analysts. Our first main result establishes an asymptotic expansion for the heat kernel of such an operator with values in its Fourier components, which involves an unprecedented contribution in terms of a distance function from lower dimensional strata of the $S^1$-action. Our second main result computes a local index density, in terms of \emph{tangential} characteristic forms, on such manifolds including \emph{Sasakian manifolds} of interest in String Theory, by showing that certain non-trivial contributions from strata in the heat kernel expansion will eventually cancel out by applying Getzler's rescaling technique to off-diagonal estimates. This leads to a local result which can be thought of as a type of local index theorem on these CR manifolds. As applications of our CR index theorem we can prove a CR version of Grauert-Riemenschneider criterion, and produce many CR functions on a weakly pseudoconvex CR manifold with transversal $S^1$ action and many CR sections on some class of CR manifolds, answering (on this class of manifolds) some long-standing questions in several complex variables and CR geometry. We give examples of these CR manifolds, some of which arise from Brieskorn manifolds. Moreover in some cases, without use of equivariant cohomology method nor keeping contributions arising from lower dimensional strata as done in previous works, we can reinterpret Kawasaki's Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for a complex orbifold with an orbifold holomorphic line bundle, as an index theorem obtained by a single integral over a smooth CR manifold which is essentially the circle bundle of this line bundle.

Induced Fubini-Study metrics on strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds and zeros of random CR functions

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact strictly pseudoconvex embeddable Cauchy-Riemann manifold and let $T_P$ be the Toeplitz operator on $X$ associated with a first-order pseudodifferential operator $P$. In our previous work we established the asymptotic expansion for $k$ large of the kernel of the operators $\chi(k^{-1}T_P)$, where $\chi$ is a smooth cut-off function supported in the positive real line. By using these asymptotics, we show in this paper that $X$ can be projectively embedded by maps with components of the form $\chi(k^{-1}\lambda)f_\lambda$, where $\lambda$ is an eigenvalue of $T_P$ and $f_\lambda$ is a corresponding eigenfunction. We establish the asymptotics of the pull-back of the Fubini-Study metric by these maps and we obtain the distribution of the zero divisors of random Cauchy-Riemann functions. We then establish a version of the Lelong-Poincaré formula for domains with boundary and obtain the distribution of the zero divisors of random holomorphic functions on strictly pseudoconvex domains.

The Strong Diederich-Fornæss Index on $C^2$ Domains in Hermitian Manifolds

Abstract:For a relatively compact Stein domain $\Omega$ with $C^2$ boundary in a Hermitian manifold $M$, we consider the strong Diederich-Fornæss index, denoted $DF(\Omega)$: the supremum of all exponents $0<\eta<1$ such that eigenvalues of the complex Hessian of $-(-\rho)^\eta$ are bounded below by some positive multiple of $(-\rho)^\eta$ on $\Omega$ for some $C^2$ defining function $\rho$. We will show that $DF(\Omega)$ is completely characterized by the existence of a Hermitian metric with curvature terms satisfying a certain inequality when restricted to the null-space of the Levi-form.

A Combinatorial Invariant for Spherical CR Structures

Abstract:We study a cross-ratio of four generic points of $S^3$ which comes from spherical CR geometry. We construct a homomorphism from a certain group generated by generic configurations of four points in $S^3$ to the pre-Bloch group $\mathcal {P}(\C)$. If $M$ is a $3$-dimensional spherical CR manifold with a CR triangulation, by our homomorphism, we get a $\mathcal {P}(\C)$-valued invariant for $M$. We show that when applying to it the Bloch-Wigner function, it is zero. Under some conditions on $M$, we show the invariant lies in the Bloch group $\mathcal B(k)$, where $k$ is the field generated by the cross-ratio. For a CR triangulation of Whitehead link complement, we show its invariant is a non-trivial torsion in $\mathcal B(k)$.

Abstract:Using a bigraded differential complex depending on the CR and pseudohermitian structure, we give a characterization of three-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex pseudo-hermitian CR manifolds isometrically immersed in Euclidean space ℝn in terms of an integral representation of Weierstraß type. Restricting to the case of immersions in ℝ4, we study harmonicity conditions for such immersions and give a complete classification of CR-pluriharmonic immersions.
