Abstract:Let G be a graph whose edges are labeled by positive integers. Label each vertex with an integer and suppose if two vertices are joined by an edge, the vertex labels are congruent to each other modulo the edge label. The set of vertex labels satisfying this condition is called a generalized spline. Gilbert, Polster, and Tymoczko recently defined generalized splines based on work on polynomial splines by Billera, Rose, Haas, Goresky-Kottwitz-Machperson, and many others. We focus on generalized splines on $n$-cycles. We construct a particularly nice basis for the module of splines on $n$-cycles. As an application, we construct generalized splines on star graphs, wheel graphs, and complete graphs.

On a family of universal cycles for multi-dimensional permutations

Abstract:A universal cycle (u-cycle) for permutations of length $n$ is a cyclic word, any size $n$ window of which is order-isomorphic to exactly one permutation of length $n$, and all permutations of length $n$ are covered. It is known that u-cycles for permutations exist, and they have been considered in the literature in several papers from different points of view. In this paper, we show how to construct a family of u-cycles for multi-dimensional permutations, which is based on applying an appropriate greedy algorithm. Our construction is a generalisation of the greedy way by Gao et al. to construct u-cycles for permutations. We also note the existence of u-cycles for $d$-dimensional matrices.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the statement: ``The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture holds for codimension-two cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$" is a birationally invariant statement, that is, if the statement is true for $X$, it is also true for all smooth varieties $X'$ which are birationally equivalent to $X$. We also prove the analogous result for 1-cycles. As direct corollaries, the Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to five, and, the Generalized Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to four.

Abstract:Generalized splines are an algebraic combinatorial framework that generalizes and unifies various established concepts across different fields, most notably the classical notion of splines and the topological notion of GKM theory. The former consists of piecewise polynomials on a combinatorial geometric object like a polytope, whose polynomial pieces agree to a specified degree of differentiability. The latter is a graph-theoretic construction of torus-equivariant cohomology that Shareshian and Wachs used to reformulate the well-known Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, a reformulation that was recently proven to hold by Brosnan and Chow and independently Guay-Paquet. This paper focuses on the theory of generalized splines. A generalized spline on a graph $G$ with each edge labeled by an ideal in a ring $R$ consists of a vertex-labeling by elements of $R$ so that the labels on adjacent vertices $u, v$ differ by an element of the ideal associated to the edge $uv$. We study the $R$-module of generalized splines and produce minimum generating sets for several families of graphs and edge-labelings: $1)$ for all graphs when the set of possible edge-labelings consists of at most two finitely-generated ideals, and $2)$ for cycles when the set of possible edge-labelings consists of principal ideals generated by elements of the form $(ax+by)^2$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[x,y]$. We obtain the generators using a constructive algorithm that is suitable for computer implementation and give several applications, including contextualizing several results in the theory of classical (analytic) splines.

Abstract:The family of cycle completable graphs has several cryptomorphic descriptions, the equivalence of which has heretofore been proven by a laborious implication-cycle that detours through a motivating matrix completion problem. We give a concise proof, partially by introducing a new characterization. Then we generalize this family to ``$k$-quasichordal'' graphs, with three natural characterizations.

Algebraic cycles on Gushel-Mukai varieties

Abstract:We study algebraic cycles on complex Gushel-Mukai (GM) varieties. We prove the generalised Hodge conjecture, the (motivated) Mumford-Tate conjecture, and the generalised Tate conjecture for all GM varieties. We compute all integral Chow groups of GM varieties, except for the only two infinite-dimensional cases (1-cycles on GM fourfolds and 2-cycles on GM sixfolds). We prove that if two GM varieties are generalised partners or generalised duals, their rational Chow motives in middle degree are isomorphic.

Finding and Combining Indicable Subgroups of Big Mapping Class Groups

Abstract:We explicitly construct new subgroups of the mapping class groups of an uncountable collection of infinite-type surfaces, including, but not limited to, right-angled Artin groups, free groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups, mapping class groups of other surfaces, and a large collection of wreath products. For each such subgroup $H$ and surface $S$, we show that there are countably many non-conjugate embeddings of $H$ into $\text{Map}(S)$; in certain cases, there are uncountably many such embeddings. The images of each of these embeddings cannot lie in the isometry group of $S$ for any hyperbolic metric and are not contained in the closure of the compactly supported subgroup of $\text{Map}(S)$. In this sense, our construction is new and does not rely on previously known techniques for constructing subgroups of mapping class groups. Notably, our embeddings of $\text{Map}(S')$ into $\text{Map}(S)$ are not induced by embeddings of $S'$ into $S$. Our main tool for all of these constructions is the utilization of special homeomorphisms of $S$ called shift maps, and more generally, multipush maps.

Abstract:An integer generalized spline is a set of vertex labels on an edge-labeled graph that satisfy the condition that if two vertices are joined by an edge, the vertex labels are congruent modulo the edge label. Foundational work on these objects comes from Gilbert, Polster, and Tymoczko, who generalize ideas from geometry/topology (equivariant cohomology rings) and algebra (algebraic splines) to develop the notion of generalized splines. Gilbert, Polster, and Tymoczko prove that the ring of splines on a graph can be decomposed in terms of splines on its subgraphs (in particular, on trees and cycles), and then fully analyze splines on trees. Following Handschy-Melnick-Reinders and Rose, we analyze splines on cycles, in our case integer generalized splines. The primary goal of this paper is to establish two new bases for the module of integer generalized splines on cycles: the triangulation basis and the King basis. Unlike bases in previous work, we are able to characterize each basis element completely in terms of the edge labels of the underlying cycle. As an application we explicitly construct the multiplication table for the ring of integer generalized splines in terms of the King basis.

Abstract:In this paper, a generalization of fixed-point mappings with an iterate at a point in complete metric spaces is shown, using the notions of T-closed sets and i-P-regularity/d-P-regularity, proving conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the fixed point. Examples are provided to illustrate the results and an application to coupled fixed points is shown.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{G}=\{G_1, \ldots, G_m\}$ be a graph collection on a common vertex set $V$ of size $n$ such that $\delta(G_i) \geq (1+o(1))n/2$ for every $i \in [m]$. We show that $\mathbf{G}$ contains every Hamilton cycle pattern. That is, for every map $\chi: [n] \to [m]$ there is a Hamilton cycle whose $i$-th edge lies in $G_{\chi(i)}$.

Abstract:For a set of integers $I$, we define a $q$-ary $I$-cycle to be a assignment of the symbols 1 through $q$ to the integers modulo $q^n$ so that every word appears on some translate of $I$. This definition generalizes that of de Bruijn cycles, and opens up a multitude of questions. We address the existence of such cycles, discuss ``reduced'' cycles (ones in which the all-zeroes string need not appear), and provide general bounds on the shortest sequence which contains all words on some translate of $I$. We also prove a variant on recent results concerning decompositions of complete graphs into cycles and employ it to resolve the case of $|I|=2$ completely.

Abstract:For $g\geq 2$, let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g$. In this paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which a given pseudo-periodic mapping class can be a root of another up to conjugacy. Using this characterization, the canonical decomposition of (non-periodic) mapping classes, and some known algorithms, we give an algorithm for determining the conjugacy classes of roots of arbitrary mapping classes. Furthermore, we derive realizable bounds on the degrees of roots of pseudo-periodic mapping classes in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, the Torelli group, the level-$m$ subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, and the commutator subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_2)$. In particular, we show that the highest possible (realizable) degree of a root of a pseudo-periodic mapping class $F$ is $3q(F)(g+1)(g+2)$, where $q(F)$ is a unique positive integer associated with the conjugacy class of $F$. Moreover, this bound is realized by a root of a power of a Dehn twist about a separating curve of genus $[g/2]$ in $S_g$, where $g\equiv 0,9 \pmod{12}$. Finally, for $g\geq 3$, we show that any pseudo-periodic mapping class having a nontrivial periodic component that is not the hyperelliptic involution, normally generates $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. Consequently, we establish that $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ is normally generated by a root of bounding pair map or a root of a nontrivial power of a Dehn twist.

Abstract:In this note, we establish Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós-type stability theorems for two generalized Turán problems involving odd cycles, both of which are extensions of the Erdős Pentagon Problem. Our results strengthen previous results by Lidický--Murphy~\cite{LM21} and Beke--Janzer~\cite{BJ24}, while also simplifying parts of their proofs.

Abstract:We analyze Weierstrass cycles and tautological rings in moduli spaces of smooth algebraic curves and in moduli spaces of integral algebraic curves with embedded disks with special attention to moduli spaces of curves having genus less than or equal to 6. In particular, we show that our general formula gives a good estimate for the dimension of Weierstrass cycles for low genera.

Abstract:In this paper, the generalized Bloch Conjecture on zero cycles for the quotient of certain complete intersections with trivial canonical bundle is proved to hold. As an application of Bloch-Srinivas method on the decomposition of the diagonal, we compute the rational coefficient Lawson homology for 1-cycles and codimension two cycles for these quotient varieties. The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture is proved to hold for codimension two cycles (and hence also for 2-cycles) on these quotient varieties.

Abstract:We study an algebraic cycle of the form $Z_0= r {\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}+\check r \check{\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}$, $r \in{\mathbb N},\check r \in{\mathbb Z},\ \ 1\leq r , |\check r |\leq 10,\ \ \gcd ( r ,\check r )=1$, inside the cubic Fermat variety $X_0$ of even dimension $n\geq 4$ and with $\dim\left ({\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}\cap \check{\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}\right)=m$. We take a smooth deformation space $\sf S$ of $X_0$ such that the triple $(X_0, {\mathbb P}^\frac{n}{2}, \check{\mathbb P}^\frac{n}{2})$ becomes rigid. For $m=\frac{n}{2}-2$ and for many examples of $N\in{\mathbb N}$ and $n$ we show that the $N$-th order Hodge locus attached to $Z_0$ is smooth and reduced of positive dimension if and only if $( r ,\check r )=(1,-1)$. In this case, the underlying algebraic cycles are conjectured to be cubic ruled cycles. For $m=\frac{n}{2}-3$ the same happens for all choices of coefficients $ r $ and $\check r $ and we do not know what kind of algebraic cycles might produce such Hodge cycles. The first case gives us a conjectural description of a component of the Hodge locus, and the second case gives us strong computer assisted evidences for the existence of new Hodge cycles for cubic hypersurfaces. Whereas the well-known construction of Hodge cycles due to D. Mumford and A. Weil for CM abelian varieties, and Y. Andr\'e's motivated cycles can be described in theoretical terms, the full proof of the existence of our Hodge cycle seems to be only possible with more powerful computing machines.

Abstract:Generalized cycles can be thought of as the extension of form-cycle duality between holomorphic forms and cycles, to meromorphic forms and generalized cycles. They appeared as an ubiquitous tool in the study of spectral curves and integrable systems in the topological recursion approach. They parametrize deformations, implementing the special geometry, where moduli are periods, and derivatives with respect to moduli are other periods, or more generally "integrals", whence the name "generalized cycles". They appeared over the years in various works, each time in specific applied frameworks, and here we provide a comprehensive self-contained corpus of definitions and properties for a very general setting. The geometry of generalized cycles is also fascinating by itself.
