Abstract:We obtain criteria for detecting complete intersections in projective varieties. Motivated by a conjecture of Hartshorne concerning subvarieties of projective spaces, we investigate situations when two-codimensional smooth subvarieties of rational homogeneous varieties are complete intersections.

Abstract:Two cycles on a projective variety over an algebraically closed field are shown to be rationally equivalent if and only if their difference equals a difference of complete intersections of a certain kind. Some of Bloch's conjectures for zero-cycles on surfaces can be restated more geometrically, which leads to several questions.

Abstract:A complete intersection $f_1=\cdots=f_k=0$ is schön, if $f_1=\cdots=f_j=0$ defines a schön subvariety of an algebraic torus for every $j\leqslant k$. This class includes nondegenerate complete intersections, critical loci of their coordinate projections, other simplest Thom--Boardman and multiple point strata of such projections, generalized Calabi--Yau complete intersections, equaltions of polynomial optimization, hyperplane arrangement complements, and many other interesting special varieties.

Abstract:For a projective variety $X$ we have the intersection complex $L$-class defined by using the self-duality of the intersection complex and also the constant coefficient $L$-class which is the specialization at $y=1$ of the Hirzebruch characteristic class defined by taking a cubic hyperresolution. We show that these two $L$-classes differ if they do for an intersection of general hyperplane sections which has only cohomologically isolated singularities. So the study of a sufficient condition for non-coincidence is reduced to the latter case, where a necessary and sufficient condition has been obtained in terms of mixed Hodge structures on the stalks of the intersection complex in our previous paper. We also construct examples of projective varieties where the two $L$-classes differ although the constant coefficient and intersection cohomologies coincide.

Abstract:Euler-symmetric projective varieties, introduced by Baohua Fu and Jun-Muk Hwang in 2020, are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many $\mathbb{C}^{\times}$-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. In this paper, we study complete intersections in projective spaces which are Euler-symmetric. It is proven that such varieties are complete intersections of hyperquadrics and the base locus of the second fundamental form at a general point is again a complete intersection.

Abstract:We study properties of rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic. It has long been known that in characteristic 0, smooth Calabi–Yau and general type varieties are not uniruled. In positive characteristic, however, there are well-known counterexamples to this statement. We will show that nevertheless, a general Calabi–Yau or general type complete intersection in projective space is not uniruled. We will also show that the space of complete intersections of degree (d1,⋯,dk) containing a rational curve has codimension at least ∑i=1kdi−2n+2 and give similar results for hypersurfaces containing higher genus curves.

Abstract:We study the geometry of the space of rational curves on smooth complete intersections of low degree, which pass through a given set of points on the variety. The argument uses spreading out to a finite field, together with an adaptation to function fields of positive characteristic of work by Rydin Myerson on the circle method. Our work also allows us to handle weak approximation for such varieties.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to construct the Hilbert scheme of complete intersections in the biprojective space $X=\mathbb{P}^m\times\mathbb{P}^n$ and for this, we define a partial order on the bidegrees of the bihomogeneous forms. As a consequence of this construction, we computer explicitly the Hilbert scheme for curves of genus 7 and 8 listed in \cite{MUK95} and \cite{MUKIDE03} that are complete intersections. Finally, we construct the coarse moduli space of complete intersections in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$.

Abstract:Let $X \subset \mathbb P^{n+c}$ be a nondegenerate smooth projective variety of dimension $n$ defined by quadratic equations. For such varieties, P. Ionescu and F. Russo proved the Hartshorne conjecture on complete intersections, which states that X is a complete intersection provided that $n\geq 2c+1$. As the extremal case, they also classified $X$ with $n=2c$. In this paper, we classify $X$ with $n=2c-1$.

Abstract:We describe explicit birational maps from some rational complete intersections of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^7$ to some prime Fano manifolds together with their Sarkisov decomposition via a single Secant Flop, allowing us to recover the cohomologically associated Castelnuovo surface of general type with $K^2=2$ and $\chi=4$ (the double cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified along the discriminant curve of the net of quadrics defining the complete intersection) as the minimal model of the non ruled irreducible component of the base locus of the inverse maps. In passing we also revisit and reformulate the results in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1706.01371" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.01371">arXiv:1706.01371</a>] about the existence of infinitely many loci of rational complete intersection of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^7$ to produce explicitly some of these loci of low codimension together with many other irreducible unirational components of the Noether--Lefschetz locus.

Abstract:In this paper, we define and study Clifford quadratic complete intersections. After showing some properties of Clifford quantum polynomial algebras, we show that there is a natural one-to-one correspondence between Clifford quadratic complete intersections and commutative quadratic complete intersections. As an application, we give a classification of Clifford quadratic complete intersections in three variables in terms of their characteristic varieties.

Abstract:Using techniques coming from the theory of marked bases, we develop new computational methods for detection and construction of Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein and complete intersection homogeneous polynomial ideals. Thanks to the functorial properties of marked bases, an elementary and effective proof of the openness of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, arithmetically Gorenstein and strict complete intersection loci in a Hilbert scheme follows, for a non-constant Hilbert polynomial.

Abstract:We study the Hilbert function and the graded Betti numbers of almost complete intersection artinian algebras. We show that that every Hilbert function of a complete intersection artinian algebra is the Hilbert function of an almost complete intersection algebra. In codimension $3$ we focus on almost complete intersection artinian algebras whose Hilbert function coincides with that of a complete intersection defined by $3$ forms of the same degree. We classify all the possible graded Betti numbers of such algebras and we specify what cancellations are allowed in a minimal graded free resolution.

Arithmetic and birational properties of linear spaces on intersections of two quadrics

Abstract:We study rationality questions for Fano schemes of linear spaces on smooth complete intersections of two quadrics, especially over non-closed fields. Our approach is to study hyperbolic reductions of the pencil of quadrics associated to $X$. We prove that the Fano schemes $F_r(X)$ of $r$-planes are birational to symmetric powers of hyperbolic reductions, generalizing results of Reid and Colliot-Th\'el\`ene--Sansuc--Swinnerton-Dyer, and we give several applications to rationality properties of $F_r(X)$. For instance, we show that if $X$ contains an $(r+1)$-plane over a field $k$, then $F_r(X)$ is rational over $k$. When $X$ has odd dimension, we show a partial converse for rationality of the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces, generalizing results of Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. When $X$ has even dimension, the analogous result does not hold, and we further investigate this situation over the real numbers. In particular, we prove a rationality criterion for the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces on these even-dimensional complete intersections over $\mathbb R$; this may be viewed as extending work of Hassett--Koll\'ar--Tschinkel.

Homological mirror symmetry for complete intersections in algebraic tori

Abstract:We prove one direction of homological mirror symmetry for complete intersections in algebraic tori, in all dimensions. The mirror geometry is not a space but a LG model, i.e. a pair given by a space and a regular function. We show that the Fukaya category of the complete intersection is equivalent to the category of matrix factorizations of the LG pair. Our approach yields new results also in the hypersurface setting, which was treated earlier by Gammage and Shende. Our argument depends on breaking down the complete intersection into smaller more manageable pieces, i.e. finite covers of products of higher dimensional pairs-of-pants, thus implementing a program first suggested by Seidel.

Abstract:Consider the Fano scheme $F_k(Y)$ parameterizing $k$-dimensional linear subspaces contained in a complete intersection $Y \subset \mathbb{P}^m$ of multi-degree $\underline{d} = (d_1, \ldots, d_s)$. It is known that, if $t := \sum_{i=1}^s \binom{d_i +k}{k}-(k+1) (m-k)\leqslant 0$ and $\Pi_{i=1}^sd_i >2$, for $Y$ a general complete intersection as above, then $F_k(Y)$ has dimension $-t$. In this paper we consider the case $t> 0$. Then the locus $W_{\underline{d},k}$ of all complete intersections as above containing a $k$-dimensional linear subspace is irreducible and turns out to have codimension $t$ in the parameter space of all complete intersections with the given multi-degree. Moreover, we prove that for general $[Y]\in W_{\underline{d},k}$ the scheme $F_k(Y)$ is zero-dimensional of length one. This implies that $W_{\underline{d},k}$ is rational.
