Abstract:Games and Culture, Ahead of Print. Board games provide immersive and enjoyable experiences for players, but they can also pose usability challenges. This article presents a comprehensive framework for analyzing board game design, focusing on identifying the elements that make play inadvertently difficult or fatiguing. The proposed framework analyses board games as a user interface between the players and the board game mechanics, thereby focusing on the presentation aspects without altering the underlying rules. The intent is to preserve the deliberate design challenges that enhance gameplay while pinpointing the elements that affect the game experience negatively. We employ a methodology that begins with the observation of players' behavioral cues to infer internal states such as cognitive or visual fatigue. These inferred states serve as a basis to identify problematic features in the game components or presentation. We illustrate the framework through a series of case studies, providing practical examples of the analysis process through an idiographic approach.

Abstract:Today's AI technology and tools are continuously applied to the field of design, promoting the improvement of designers' creative ability and design efficiency. The recent emergence of AI agents represented by Chat-GPT has excellent conversational and creative reasoning capabilities in many aspects, which will provide great opportunities for higher-level design collaboration between humans and machines. AI is gaining popularity in today's design creative field, yet we know very little about the creative mechanics and ideation process of AI agents. Faced with this problem, we draw on the theory of protocol analysis and propose a method to quantitatively analyze the creative ideation process of AI agents. Then, we tried Chat-GPT and GPT-4 ideation for specific design issues, and analyzed their creativity and cognitive behavior in the ideation process using linkography. Finally, we point out the advantages, difficulties, and next steps of AI agents in design ideation.

Abstract:This study scrutinizes the important factors behind the success of video games,Targeting a comprehensive paradigm which merges game quality, brand influence, and market strategies. By investigating the top 100 best-selling titles on Steam, the research looks into the interconnections between creative gameplay, the depth of storytelling, audiovisual quality, and sales results. Analysis of quantitative regression shows that although game quality is important, it is not the main factor for success. A qualitative assessment of high-priced, low-rated games including Overwatch 2 and NBA 2K25, and high-rated, low-selling games like Stardew Valley and Euro Truck Simulator 2, shows how significant brand loyalty, multiplayer interaction, and market segmentation are. This study demonstrates the value of original gameplay, successful marketing approaches, and technological innovations, like VR and superior graphics, in increasing sales and supporting player retention. The results provide key understanding for game developers and marketers who want to improve game performance in a cutthroat and rapidly evolving market.

Abstract:The combination of optical illusions and indie games has great potential for artistic expression. Based on optical illusions, this study examines the interaction between players and optical illusions in indie games, and focuses on optical illusions in contemporary indie games, which are compared and analyzed with paintings by artists such as Escher, Andrea Pozzo, Josef Alberts, and Luca Giordano to analyze the formative method that applies optical illusions in indie game art. Based on the development of indie games that use optical illusions formatively, four optical illusions are summarized: optical illusion of contradictory space, active viewpoint transformation of players, subjective visual perception of transformation, and reconstruction of light and shadow. Representative and influential indie games including “Monument Valley,” “Echochrome,” “Watch,” “Trick Art Dungeon,” “Shadowmatic,” “Superliminal,” and “Kubic” were selected and analyzed. As a result of comparing these independent games and artworks, it was concluded that modern optical independent video games should stimulate players' aesthetic cognitive function by properly fusing a simple screen, simple color use, and the complexity of optical space. If the 'circulation' and 'infinite' characteristics of optical illusions are dynamically applied through video games, it can be expected that a new formative art combined with interaction will be born.

Abstract:Our previous work has demonstrated that players who perceive a game as more challenging are likely to perceive greater learning from that game [8]. However, this may not be the case for all sources of challenge. In this study of a Science learning game called Quantum Spectre, we found that students' progress through the first zone of the game seemed to encounter a "roadblock" during gameplay, dropping out when they cannot (or do not want to) progress further. Previously we had identified two primary types of errors in the learning game, Quantum Spectre: Science Errors related to the game's core educational content; and Puzzle Errors related to rules of the game but not to science knowledge. Using this prior analysis, alongside Survival Analysis techniques for analyzing time-series data and drop-out rates, we explored players' gameplay patterns to help us understand player dropout in Quantum Spectre. These results demonstrate that modeling player behavior can be useful for both assessing learning and for designing complex problem solving content for learning environments.

Abstract:<p>In the spirit of "multi-culturalism", we use four kinds of computations: simulation, numeric, symbolic, and "conceptual", to explore some "games of pure chance" inspired by children board games like "Snakes and Ladders" (aka "Chutes and Ladders") and "gambler's ruin with unlimited credit". Even more interesting than the many computer-generated specific results described in this paper and its web-site extension, is our broad-minded, ecumenical approach, not favoring, a priori, any one of the above four kinds of computation, but showing that, a posteriori, symbolic computation is the most important one, since (except for simulation) numerics can be made more efficient with the help of symbolics (in the "downward" direction), and, (in the "upward" direction) the mere existence of certain symbolic-computational algorithms imply interesting "qualitative" results, that certain numbers are always rational, or always algebraic, and certain sequences are always polynomial, or C-recursive, or algebraic, or holonomic. This article is accompanied by four Maple packages, and numerous input and output files, that readers can use as templates for their own investigations.</p>

Abstract:Numberlink is a puzzle game in which players are given a grid with nodes marked with a natural number, $n$, and asked to create $n$ connections with neighboring nodes. Connections can only be made with top, bottom, left and right neighbors, and one cannot have more than two connections between any neighboring nodes. In this paper, we give a mathematical formulation of the puzzles via graphs and give some immediate consequences of this formulation. The main result of this work is an algorithm which provides insight into characteristics of these puzzles and their solutions. Finally, we give a few open questions and further directions.

Abstract:The Link-a-Pix puzzle, which is also known as Piczle, PathPix, Pictlink, Number Net, or Paint by Pairs, is a popular picture logic puzzle game where the player paints a grid by linking the hint points with number-color labels to obtain the solution as a pixel art picture. In this article, we propose a joint depth first searching and linear programming aided algorithm for the sake of automatically solving the Link-a-Pix puzzle. The experiments implemented on 40 puzzles with various types verify the effectiveness and feasibility of our proposed solver, which is conducive to both designing and solving the Link-a-Pix puzzles and related applications.

Abstract:BackgroundInternet Gaming Disorder (IGD) involves an imbalance in the brain's dual-system, characterized by heightened reward-seeking and diminished cognitive control, which leads to decision-making challenges. The exploration-exploitation strategy is key to decision-making, but how IGD affects this process is unclear.MethodsTo investigate the impact of IGD on decision-making, a modified version of the two-armed bandit task was employed. Participants included 41 IGD individuals and 44 healthy control (HC) individuals. The study assessed the strategies used by participants in the task, particularly focusing on the exploitation-exploration strategy. Additionally, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine brain activation patterns during decision-making and estimation phasess.ResultsThe study found that individuals with IGD demonstrated a higher reliance on exploitative strategies in decision-making due to their elevated value-seeking tendencies and decreased cognitive control. IGD individuals also displayed heightened activation in the pre-supplementary motor area (preSMA) and the ventral striatum (VS) compared to the HC group in both decision-making and estimation phases. Meanwhile, the prefrontal cortex (PFC) showed more inhibition in IGD individuals than in the HC group during exploitative strategies. This inhibition was found to decrease as cognitive control diminished.ConclusionThe study concludes that the imbalance in the development of the dual-system in individuals with IGD may lead to an over-reliance on exploitative strategies. This imbalance, marked by increased reward-seeking and reduced cognitive control, contributes to difficulties in decision-making and value-related behavioral processes in IGD individuals.

Abstract:Recent advances in game informatics have enabled us to find strong strategies across a diverse range of games. However, these strategies are usually difficult for humans to interpret. On the other hand, research in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) has seen a notable surge in scholarly activity. Interpreting strong or near-optimal strategies or the game itself can provide valuable insights. In this paper, we propose two methods to quantify the feature importance using Shapley values: one for the game itself and another for individual AIs. We empirically show that our proposed methods yield intuitive explanations that resonate with and augment human understanding.

Abstract:All it takes to identify the computer programs which are Artificial Intelligence is to give them a test and award AI to those that pass the test. Let us say that the scores they earn at the test will be called IQ. We cannot pinpoint a minimum IQ threshold that a program has to cover in order to be AI, however, we will choose a certain value. Thus, our definition for AI will be any program the IQ of which is above the chosen value. While this idea has already been implemented in [3], here we will revisit this construct in order to introduce certain improvements.

Abstract:Building on the long common history of board games and intelligence research, we developed a new deductive reasoning test based on the popular game Mastermind. The research questions of this registered report were: (a) Is a psychometrically sound measurement of the ability to solve Mastermind items possible (i.e., a reliable, uni-dimensional measurement with a good coverage of difficulty)? (b) Is the ability to solve Mastermind items substantially related to other measures of cognitive ability (i.e., matrix test, knowledge test) and need for cognition? (c) Can item difficulty be predicted by the number of colors, positions, premises, and a newly proposed entropy-based index? Based on the results of a pilot study, we developed 30 items and administered them to 351 participants in the preregistered main study using a multiple matrix sampling design. The deductive Mastermind test proved to be (a) a reliable and efficient measure of reasoning across a wide ability range, and (b) showed expectation-consistent patterns for the convergent and divergent measures. (c) The entropy-based index allowed for the prediction of item difficulty to a considerable degree ( R 2 = .47). We discuss the ideas of information theory, including entropy, as constructing principles for the rational test development of reasoning tests.

Abstract:Understanding player strategies is a key question when analyzing player behavior both for academic researchers and industry practitioners. For game designers and game user researchers, it is important to gauge the distance between intended strategies and emergent strategies; this comparison allows identification of glitches or undesirable behaviors. For academic researchers using games for serious purposes such as education, the strategies adopted by players are indicative of their cognitive progress in relation to serious goals, such as learning process. Current techniques and systems created to address these needs present a few drawbacks. Qualitative methods are difficult to scale upwards to include large number of players and are prone to subjective biases. Other approaches such as visualization and analytical tools are either designed to provide an aggregated overview of the data, losing the nuances of individual player behaviors, or, in the attempt of accounting for individual behavior, are not specifically designed to reduce the visual cognitive load. In this work, we propose a novel visualization technique that specifically addresses the tasks of comparing behavior sequences in order to capture an overview of the strategies enacted by players and at the same time examine individual player behaviors to identify differences and outliers. This approach allows users to form hypotheses about player strategies and verify them. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique through a case study: utilizing a prototype system to investigate data collected from a commercial educational puzzle game. While the prototype's usability can be improved, initial testing results show that core features of the system proved useful to our potential users for understanding player strategies.

Abstract:There is currently a need for engaging, user-friendly, and repeatable tasks for assessment of cognitive and motor function in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. This study evaluated the feasibility of a maze-like Numberlink puzzle game in assessing differences in game-based measures of cognition and motor function due to age and neurodegenerative diseases. Fifty-five participants, including young (18–31 years, n = 18), older (64–79 years, n = 14), and oldest adults (86–98 years, n = 14), and patients with Parkinson's (59–76 years, n = 4) and Huntington's disease (HD; 35–66 years, n = 5) played different difficulty levels of the Numberlink puzzle game and completed usability questionnaires and tests for psychomotor, attentional, visuospatial, and constructional and executive function. Analyses of Numberlink game-based cognitive (solving time and errors) and motor [mean velocity and movement direction changes (MDC)] performance metrics revealed statistically significant differences between age groups and between patients with HD and older adults. However, patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) did not differ from older adults. Correlational analyses showed significant associations between game-based performance and movement metrics and performance on neuropsychological tests for psychomotor, attentional, visuospatial, and constructional and executive function. Furthermore, varying characteristics of the Numberlink puzzle game succeeded in creating graded difficulty levels. Findings from this study support recent suggestions that data from a maze-like puzzle game provide potential "digital biomarkers" to assess changes in psychomotor, visuoconstructional, and executive function related to aging and neurodegeneration. In particular, game-based movement measures from the maze-like puzzle Numberlink games are promising as a tool to monitor the progression of motor impairment in neurodegenerative diseases. Further studies are needed to more comprehensively establish the cognitive validity and test–retest reliability of using Numberlink puzzles as a valid cognitive assessment tool.

Abstract:Information Visualization, Ahead of Print. How are the advantage relations between a set of agents playing a game organized and how do they reflect the structure of the game? In this paper, we illustrate 'Principal Trade-off Analysis' (PTA), a decomposition method that embeds games into a low-dimensional feature space. We argue that the embeddings are more revealing than previously demonstrated by developing an analogy to Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PTA represents an arbitrary two-player zero-sum game as linear combination of simple games via the projection of policy profiles into orthogonal 2D feature planes. We show that the feature planes represent unique strategic trade-offs and truncation of the sequence provides insightful model reduction and visualization. We demonstrate the validity of PTA on a quartet of games (Kuhn poker, RPS + 2, Blotto and Pokemon). In Kuhn poker, PTA clearly identifies the trade-off between bluffing and calling. In Blotto, PTA identifies game symmetries and specifies strategic trade-offs associated with distinct win conditions. These symmetries reveal limitations of PTA unaddressed in previous work. For Pokemon, PTA recovers clusters that naturally correspond to Pokemon types, correctly identifies the designed trade-off between those types, and discovers a rock-paper-scissor (RPS) cycle in the Pokemon generation type – all absent any specific information except game outcomes.

Abstract:It is a long-standing goal of artificial intelligence (AI) to be superior to human beings in decision making. Games are suitable for testing AI capabilities of making good decisions in non-numerical tasks. In this paper, we develop a new AI algorithm to play the penny-matching game considered in Shannon's "mind-reading machine" (1953) against human players. In particular, we exploit cognitive hierarchy theory and Bayesian learning techniques to continually evolve a model for predicting human player decisions, and let the AI player make decisions according to the model predictions to pursue the best chance of winning. Experimental results show that our AI algorithm beats 27 out of 30 volunteer human players.
