Abstract:In this paper we present a matricial result that generalizes Hironaka's game and Perron transforms simultaneously. We also show how one can deduce the various forms in which the algorithm of Perron appears in proofs of local uniformization from our main result.

Abstract:We prove that if an $n\times n$ matrix defined over ${\mathbb Q}_p$ (or more generally an arbitrary complete, discretely-valued, non-Archimedean field) satisfies a certain congruence property, then it has a strictly maximal eigenvalue in ${\mathbb Q}_p$, and that iteration of the (normalized) matrix converges to a projection operator onto the corresponding eigenspace. This result may be viewed as a $p$-adic analogue of the Perron-Frobenius theorem for positive real matrices.

Ehrhart Positivity of Panhandle Matroids and the Ehrhart-Coefficient Upper-Bound Conjecture for Paving Matroids

Abstract:Panhandle matroids are a specific lattice-path matroid corresponding to panhandle-shaped Ferrers diagrams. Their matroid polytopes are the subpolytopes carved from a hypersimplex to form matroid polytopes of paving matroids. It has been an active area of research to determine which families of matroid polytopes are Ehrhart positive. We prove Ehrhart positivity for panhandle matroid polytopes, thus confirming a conjecture of Hanely, Martin, McGinnis, Miyata, Nasr, Vindas-Meléndez, and Yin (2023). Another standing conjecture posed by Ferroni (2022) asserts that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a connected matroid are bounded above by those of the corresponding uniform matroid. We prove Ferroni's conjecture for paving matroids -- a class conjectured to asymptotically contain all matroids. Our proofs rely solely on combinatorial techniques which involve determining intricate interpretations of certain set partitions.

A new proof of the Perron-Frobeniuos theorem, a variational approach

Abstract:We develop the Perron-Frobenius theory using a variational approach and extend it to a set of arbitrary matrices, including those that are neither irreducible nor essentially positive, and non-preserved cones. We introduce a new concept called a quasi-eigenvalue of a matrix, which is invariant under orthogonal transformations of variables, and has various useful properties, such as determining the largest value of the real parts of the eigenvalues of a matrix. We extend Weyl's inequality for the eigenvalues to the set of arbitrary matrices and prove the new stability result to the Perron root of irreducible nonnegative matrices under arbitrary perturbations. As well as this, we obtain new types of estimates for the ranges of the sets of eigenvalues and their real parts.

Abstract:We deal with inverse maximum theorems, which are inspired by the ones given by Aoyama, Komiya, Li et al., Park and Komiya, and Yamauchi. As a consequence of our results, we state and prove an inverse maximum Nash theorem and show that any generalized Nash game can be reduced to a classical Nash game, under suitable assumptions. Additionally, we show that a result by Arrow and Debreu, on the existence of solutions for generalized Nash games, is actually equivalent to the one given by Debreu-Fan-Glicksberg for classical Nash games, which in turn is equivalent to Kakutani-Fan-Glisckberg's fixed point theorem.

Abstract:We study the l^{p_1,...,p_m} singular value problem for non-negative tensors. We prove a general Perron-Frobenius theorem for weakly irreducible and irreducible nonnegative tensors and provide a Collatz-Wielandt characterization of the maximal singular value. Additionally, we propose a higher order power method for the computation of the maximal singular vectors and show that it has an asymptotic linear convergence rate.

Abstract:We introduce a near-linear complexity (geometric and meshless/algebraic) multigrid/multiresolution method for PDEs with rough ($L^\infty$) coefficients with rigorous a-priori accuracy and performance estimates. The method is discovered through a decision/game theory formulation of the problems of (1) identifying restriction and interpolation operators (2) recovering a signal from incomplete measurements based on norm constraints on its image under a linear operator (3) gambling on the value of the solution of the PDE based on a hierarchy of nested measurements of its solution or source term. The resulting elementary gambles form a hierarchy of (deterministic) basis functions of $H^1_0(\Omega)$ (gamblets) that (1) are orthogonal across subscales/subbands with respect to the scalar product induced by the energy norm of the PDE (2) enable sparse compression of the solution space in $H^1_0(\Omega)$ (3) induce an orthogonal multiresolution operator decomposition. The operating diagram of the multigrid method is that of an inverted pyramid in which gamblets are computed locally (by virtue of their exponential decay), hierarchically (from fine to coarse scales) and the PDE is decomposed into a hierarchy of independent linear systems with uniformly bounded condition numbers. The resulting algorithm is parallelizable both in space (via localization) and in bandwith/subscale (subscales can be computed independently from each other). Although the method is deterministic it has a natural Bayesian interpretation under the measure of probability emerging (as a mixed strategy) from the information game formulation and multiresolution approximations form a martingale with respect to the filtration induced by the hierarchy of nested measurements.

Abstract:We clarify some properties concerning Perron vectors of weakly irreducible nonnegative (WIN) tensors, and multi-linear systems with non-homogeneous left-hand side whose solutions are sub-vectors of the Perron vectors. Based on the properties, we propose an algorithm for computing interval vectors containing the Perron vectors. This algorithm is applicable to all the WIN tensors, whereas the algorithms previously developed by the author are applicable only to a subclass of the WIN tensors. Numerical results show efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:We give new characterizations for the class of uniformly dense matroids and study applications of these characterizations to graphic and real representable matroids. We show that a matroid is uniformly dense if and only if its base polytope contains a point with constant coordinates. As a main application, we derive new spectral, structural and classification results for uniformly dense graphs. In particular, we show that connected regular uniformly dense graphs are $1$-tough and thus contain a (near-)perfect matching. As a second application, we show that uniform density can be recognized in polynomial time for real representable matroids, which includes graphs. Finally, we show that strictly uniformly dense real represented matroids can be represented by projection matrices with a constant diagonal and that they are parametrized by a subvariety of the Grassmannian.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the local converse theorem and the stability of local gamma factors for $\Mp_{2n}$ via the precise local theta correspondence between $\Mp_{2n}$ and $\SO_{2n+1}$ over local fields of characteristic not equal to 2. As an application, we can prove the rigidity theorem for irreducible generic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\Mp_{2n}$ over number fields.

On Matveev-Piergallini moves for branched spines

Abstract:The Matveev-Piergallini (MP) moves on spines of $3$-manifolds are well-known for their correspondence to the Pachner $2$-$3$ moves in dual ideal triangulations. Benedetti and Petronio introduced a representation of combed $3$-manifolds using branched spines and their equivalence relation, which involves MP moves with 16 distinct patterns of branchings. In this paper, we demonstrate that these 16 MP moves on branched spines are derived from a primary MP move, the pure sliding moves and their inverses. Consequently, we obtain an alternative generating set for the equivalence relation representing closed $3$-manifolds and combed $3$-manifolds. Furthermore, we extend the results to representations of framed $3$-manifolds and spin $3$-manifolds. These representations are advantageous, particularly when constructing quantum invariants of links and $3$-manifolds. In a construction of quantum invariants, the primary MP move precisely corresponds to an algebraic pentagon relation of a canonical element, and each pure sliding move corresponds essentially to the invertibility of the canonical element. We hope our results contribute to a better understanding of quantum invariants in the context of spines and ideal triangulations.

A Note on Extension Properties and Representations of Matroids

Abstract:We discuss several extension properties of matroids and polymatroids and their application as necessary conditions for the existence of different matroid representations, namely linear, folded linear, algebraic, and entropic representations. Iterations of those extension properties are checked for matroids on eight and nine elements by means of computer-aided explorations, finding in that way several new examples of non-linearly representable matroids. A special emphasis is made on sparse paving matroids on nine points containing the tic-tac-toe configuration. We present a new, more clear description of that family and we analyze extension properties on those matroids and their duals.

On local character expansions for principal series representations of general linear groups

Abstract:We obtain two explicit formulas for the full local character expansion of any irreducible representation of a p-adic general linear group in principal blocks. The first, generalizing previous work of the author on the Iwahori-spherical case, expresses the expansion in terms of dimensions of degenerate Whittaker models. The second gives a closed expression in terms of values of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of a suitable permutation group.

Abstract:In this article we discuss the Mass Transference Principle due to Beresnevich and Velani and survey several generalisations and variants, both deterministic and random. Using a Hausdorff measure analogue of the inhomogeneous Khintchine-Groshev Theorem, proved recently via an extension of the Mass Transference Principle to systems of linear forms, we give an alternative proof of a general inhomogeneous Jarn\'ık-Besicovitch Theorem which was originally proved by Levesley. We additionally show that without monotonicity Levesley's theorem no longer holds in general. Thereafter, we discuss recent advances by Wang, Wu and Xu towards mass transference principles where one transitions from $\limsup$ sets defined by balls to $\limsup$ sets defined by rectangles (rather than from "balls to balls" as is the case in the original Mass Transference Principle). Furthermore, we consider mass transference principles for transitioning from rectangles to rectangles and extend known results using a slicing technique. We end this article with a brief survey of random analogues of the Mass Transference Principle.

Abstract:We represent Matérn functions in terms of Schoenberg's integrals which ensure the positive definiteness and prove the systems of translates of Matérn functions form Riesz sequences in $L^2(\R^n)$ or Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on a new class of integral transforms that generalize Fourier transforms for radial functions. We also consider inverse multi-quadrics and obtain similar results.

Perron solutions and boundary regularity for nonlocal nonlinear Dirichlet problems

Abstract:For nonlinear operators of fractional $p$-Laplace type, we consider two types of solutions to the nonlocal Dirichlet problem: Sobolev solutions based on fractional Sobolev spaces and Perron solutions based on superharmonic functions. These solutions give rise to two different concepts of regularity for boundary points, namely Sobolev and Perron regularity. We show that these two notions are equivalent and we also provide several characterizations of regular boundary points. Along the way, we give a new definition of Perron solutions, which is applicable to arbitrary exterior Dirichlet data $g: \Omega^c \to [-\infty,\infty]$. We obtain resolutivity and invariance results for these Perron solutions, and show that the Sobolev and Perron solutions coincide for a large class of exterior Dirichlet data. A uniqueness result for the Dirichlet problem is also obtained for the class of bounded solutions taking prescribed continuous exterior data quasieverywhere on the boundary.

An activities expansion of the transition polynomial of a multimatroid

Abstract:The weighted transition polynomial of a multimatroid is a generalization of the Tutte polynomial. By defining the activity of a skew class with respect to a basis in a multimatroid, we obtain an activities expansion for the weighted transition polynomial. We also decompose the set of all transversals of a multimatroid as a union of subsets of transversals. Each term in the decomposition has the structure of a boolean lattice, and each transversal belongs to a number of terms depending only on the sizes of some of its skew classes. Further expressions for the transition polynomial of a multimatroid are obtained via an equivalence relation on its bases and by extending Kochol's theory of compatible sets. We apply our multimatroid results to obtain a result of Morse about the transition polynomial of a delta-matroid and get a partition of the boolean lattice of subsets of elements of a delta-matroid determined by the feasible sets. Finally, we describe how multimatroids arise from graphs embedded in surfaces and apply our results to obtain an activities expansion for the topological transition polynomial. Our work extends results for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid.

A Matrix Generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya Rearrangement Inequality and Its Applications

Abstract:We prove a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya rearrangement inequality to positive definite matrices. The inequality can be seen as a commutation principle in the sense of Iusem and Seeger. An important instrument in the proof is a first-order perturbation formula for a certain spectral function, which could be of independent interests. The inequality is then extended to rectangular matrices. Using our main results, we derive new inequalities for several distance-like functions encountered in various signal processing or machine learning applications.
