Abstract:In this article we construct a smooth Euler flow supported in a neighborhood of a helix. It may be considered a generalization of a similar solution found by the author for a circle.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:We present a steady Euler flow on the round 3-sphere whose velocity vector field has the property of having two independent first integrals, being tangent to the fibres of an almost submersion onto the 2-sphere. This submersion turns out to be a critical point for the quartic Faddeev-Skyrme model with a standard potential.

Abstract:We consider the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equation \begin{equation*}\left\{\begin{aligned} &\partial_t \Omega+U \cdot \nabla \Omega-\Omega\cdot \nabla U=0 \\ &\Omega(x,0)=\Omega_0(x) \end{aligned}\right. \end{equation*} under the assumption that $\Omega^z$ is helical and in the absence of vorticity stretching. Assuming that the initial vorticity $\Omega_0$ is primarily concentrated within an $\epsilon$ neighborhood of a helix $\Gamma_0$, we prove that its solution $\Omega(\cdot,t)$ remain concentrated near a helix $\Gamma(t)$ for any $t \in [0,T)$, where $\Gamma(t)$ can be interpreted as $\Gamma_0$ rotating around the $x_3$ axis with a speed $V=C\log \frac{1}{\epsilon}+O(1)$. It should be emphasized that the dynamics for the helical vortex filament are exhibited on the time interval $[0,T)$, which is longer than $\left[0, \frac{T}{\log\frac{1}{\epsilon}}\right)$.

Abstract:We prove the existence of nonradial classical solutions to the 2D incompressible Euler equations with compact support. More precisely, for any positive integer $k$, we construct compactly supported stationary Euler flows of class $C^k(\mathbb{R}^2)$ which are not locally radial. The proof uses a degree-theory-based bifurcation argument which hinges on three key ingredients: a novel approach to stationary Euler flows through elliptic equations with non-autonomous nonlinearities; a set of sharp regularity estimates for the linearized operator, which involves a potential that blows up as the inverse square of the distance to the boundary of the support; and overcoming a serious problem of loss of derivatives by the introduction of anisotropic weighted functional spaces between which the linearized operator is Fredholm.

Abstract:Rotating helical bodies of arbitrary cross-sectional profile and infinite length are explored as they swim through or transport a viscous fluid. The Stokes equations are studied in a helical coordinate system, and closed form analytical expressions for the force-free swimming speed and torque are derived in the asymptotic regime of nearly cylindrical bodies. High-order accurate expressions for the velocity field and swimming speed are derived for helical bodies of finite pitch angle through a double series expansion. The analytical predictions match well with the results of full numerical simulations, and accurately predict the optimal pitch angle for a given cross-sectional profile. This work may improve the modeling and design of helical structures used in microfluidic manipulation, synthetic microswimmer engineering, and the transport and mixing of viscous fluids.

Dissipative Euler flows originating from circular vortex filaments

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the first existence result of weak solutions to the 3D Euler equation with initial vorticity concentrated in a circle and velocity field in $C([0,T],L^{2^-})$. The energy becomes finite and decreasing for positive times, with vorticity concentrated in a ring that thickens and moves in the direction of the symmetry axis. With our approach, there is no need to mollify the initial data or to rescale the time variable. We overcome the singularity of the initial data by applying convex integration within the appropriate time-weighted space.

Dynamics of helical vortex filaments in non viscous incompressible flows

Abstract:In this paper we study concentrated solutions of the three-dimensional Euler equations in helical symmetry without swirl. We prove that any helical vorticity solution initially concentrated around helices of pairwise distinct radii remains concentrated close to filaments. As suggested by the vortex filament conjecture, we prove that those filaments are translating and rotating helices. Similarly to what is obtained in other frameworks, the localization is weak in the direction of the movement but strong in its normal direction, and holds on an arbitrary long time interval in the naturally rescaled time scale. In order to prove this result, we derive a new explicit formula for the singular part of the Biot-Savart kernel in a two-dimensional reformulation of the problem. This allows us to obtain an appropriate decomposition of the velocity field to reproduce recent methods used to describe the dynamics of vortex rings or point-vortices for the lake equation.

A geometric characterization of steady laminar flow

Abstract:We study the steady states of the Euler equations on the periodic channel or annulus. We show that if these flows are laminar (layered by closed non-contractible streamlines which foliate the domain), then they must be either parallel or circular flows. We also show that a large subset of these shear flows are isolated from non-shear stationary states. For Poiseuille flow, $(v(y),0)=(y^2,0)$, our result shows that all stationary solutions in a sufficiently small $C^2$ neighborhood are shear flows. We then show that if $v(y)=y^n$ with $n \geq 1$, then in any $C^{n-}$ neighborhood, there exist smooth non-shear steady states, traveling waves, and quasiperiodic solutions of any number of non-commensurate frequencies. This proves the rigidity near Poiseuille is sharp. Finally, we prove that on general compact doubly connected domains, laminar steady Euler flows with constant velocity on the boundary must also be either parallel or circular, and the domain a periodic channel or an annulus. This shows that laminar free boundary Euler solutions must have Euclidean symmetry.

Steady Compressible 3D Euler Flows in Toroidal Volumes without Continuous Euclidean Isometries

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of smooth three-dimensional vector fields where the cross product between the vector field and its curl is balanced by the gradient of a smooth function, with toroidal level sets that are not invariant under continuous Euclidean isometries. This finding indicates the existence of steady compressible Euler flows, either influenced by an external potential energy or maintained by a density source in the continuity equation, that are foliated by asymmetric nested toroidal surfaces. Our analysis suggests that the primary obstacle in resolving Grad's conjecture regarding the existence of nontrivial magnetohydrodynamic equilibria arises from the incompressibility constraint imposed on the magnetic field.

A rigidity result for the Euler equations in an annulus

Abstract:We are concerned with rigidity properties of steady Euler flows in two-dimensional bounded annuli. We prove that in an annulus, a steady flow with no interior stagnation point and tangential boundary conditions is a circular flow, which addresses an open question proposed by F. Hamel and N. Nadirashvili in [J. Eur. Math. Soc., 25 (2023), no. 1, 323-368]. The proof is based on the study of the geometric properties of the streamlines of the flow and on `local' symmetry properties for the non-negative solutions of semi-linear elliptic equations with a continuous nonlinearity.

Abstract:We derive the spin Euler equation for ideal flows by applying the spherical Clebsch mapping. This equation is based on the spin vector rather than the velocity. It enables a feasible Lagrangian study of fluid dynamics, as the isosurface of a spin-vector component is a vortex surface and material surface in ideal flows. The spin Euler equation is also equivalent to a special case of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with a specific effective magnetic field, revealing a possible connection between ideal flow and magnetic crystal. We conduct direct numerical simulations of three ideal flows of the vortex knot, vortex link and modified Taylor-Green flow by solving the spin Euler equation. The evolution of the Lagrangian vortex surface illustrates that the regions with large vorticity are rapidly stretched into spiral sheets. We establish a non-blowup criterion for the spin Euler equation, suggesting that the Laplacian of the spin vector must diverge if the solution forms a singularity at some finite time. The DNS result exhibits a pronounced double-exponential growth of the maximum norm of Laplacian of the spin vector, showing no evidence of the finite-time singularity formation if the double-exponential growth holds at later times. Moreover, the present criterion with Lagrangian nature appears to be more sensitive than the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in detecting the flows that are incapable of producing finite-time singularities.

Stokes flow of an evolving fluid film with arbitrary shape and topology

Abstract:The dynamics of evolving fluid films in the viscous Stokes limit is relevant to various applications, such as the modeling of lipid bilayers in cells. While the governing equations were formulated by Scriven in 1960, solving for the flow of a deformable viscous surface with arbitrary shape and topology has remained a challenge. In this study, we present a straightforward discrete model based on variational principles to address this long-standing problem. We replace the classical equations, which are expressed with tensor calculus in local coordinate, with a simple coordinate-free, differential-geometric formulation. The formulation provides a fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanics and directly translates to discretization. We construct a discrete analogue of the system using the Onsager variational principle, which, in a smooth context, governs the flow of a viscous medium. In the discrete setting, instead of term-wise discretizing the coordinate-based Stokes equations, we construct a discrete Rayleighian for the system and derive the discrete Stokes equations via the variational principle. This approach results in a stable, structure-preserving variational integrator that solves the system on general manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability of two-dimensional steady Euler flows with sharply concentrated vorticity in a bounded domain. These flows are obtained as maximizers of the kinetic energy on some isovortical surface, under the constraint that the vorticity is compactly supported in a finite number of disjoint regions of small diameter. We prove the nonlinear stability of these flows when the vorticity is sufficiently concentrated in one small region, or in two small regions with opposite signs. The proof is achieved by showing that these flows constitute a compact and isolated set of local maximizers of the kinetic energy on the isovortical surface. The separation property of the stream function plays a crucial role in validating isolatedness.

Abstract:This paper concerns the structural stability of subsonic flows with a contact discontinuity in a finitely long axisymmetric cylinder. We establish the existence and uniqueness of axisymmetric subsonic flows with a contact discontinuity by prescribing the horizontal mass flux distribution, the swirl velocity, the entropy and the Bernoulli’s quantity at the entrance and the radial velocity at the exit. It can be formulated as a free boundary problem with the contact discontinuity to be determined simultaneously with the flows. Compared with the two-dimensional case, a new difficulty arises due to the singularity near the axis. An invertible modified Lagrangian transformation is introduced to overcome this difficulty and straighten the contact discontinuity. The key elements in our analysis are to utilize the deformation-curl decomposition introduced in [S. Weng and Z. Xin, A deformation-curl decomposition for three dimensional steady Euler equations, Sci. Sin. Math. 49 (2019) 307–320 (in Chinese): doi:10.1360/N012018-00125] to effectively decouple the hyperbolic and elliptic modes in the steady axisymmetric Euler system and to use the implicit function theorem to locate the contact discontinuity.

Abstract:We prove an existence result for solutions to the stationary Euler equations in a domain with nonsmooth boundary. This is an extension of a previous existence result in smooth domains by Alber (1992). The domains we consider have a boundary consisting of three parts, one where fluid flows into the domain, one where the fluid flows out, and one which no fluid passes through. These three parts meet at right angles. An example of this would be a right cylinder with fluid flowing in at one end and out at the other, with no fluid going through the mantle. A large part of the proof is dedicated to studying the Poisson equation and the related compatibility conditions required for solvability in this kind of domain.

Abstract:We provide a integration of Navier-Stokes equations concerning the unsteady-state laminar flow of an incompressible, isothermal (newtonian) fluid in a cylindrical vessel spinning about its symmetry axis, say $z$, and inside which the liquid velocity starts with a non-zero axial component as well. Basic physical assumptions are that the pressure axial gradient keeps itself on its hydrostatic value and that no radial velocity exists. In such a way the PDEs become uncoupled and can be faced separately from each other. We succeed in computing both the unsteady velocities, i.e. the axial $v_z$ and the circumferential $v_\theta$ as well, by means of infinite series expansions of Fourier-Bessel type under time exponential damping. Following this, we also find the unsteady surfaces of dynamical equilibrium, the wall shear stress and the Stokesian streamlines
Axisymmetric steady Navier-Stokes flows under suction

Abstract:We prove the existence of solutions for the axisymmetric steady Navier-Stokes system around an infinite cylinder under external forces. The solutions are constructed to be decaying at the horizontal infinity, despite an analogue of the Stokes paradox for the linearized system, and having neither periodicity nor decay in the vertical direction. The proof is based on perturbation of the nonlinear system around a suction flow. The class of functions in this paper, which is a subspace of the space of Fourier transformed vector finite Radon measures, is inspired by Giga-Saal (2013) treating rotating boundary layers.

Abstract:We present a family of steadily rotating equilibrium states consisting of helically symmetric vortices in an incompressible inviscid irrotational unbounded fluid. These vortices are described by contours bounding regions of uniform axial vorticity. Helical symmetry implies material conservation of axial vorticity (in the absolute frame of reference) when the flow field parallel to vortex lines is proportional to (1+2r2)−1/2, where is the pitch and r is the distance from the axis. This material conservation property enables equilibria to be calculated simply by a restriction on the helical stream function. The states are parameterized by their mean radius and centroid position. In the case of a single vortex, parameter space cannot be fully filled by our numerical approach. We conjecture multiply connected contours will characterize equilibria where the algorithm fails. We also consider multiple vortices, evenly azimuthally spaced about the origin. Stability properties are investigated numerically using a helical CASL algorithm.

On a classification of steady solutions to two-dimensional Euler equations

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a classification of steady solutions to two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in terms of the set of flow angles. The first main result asserts that the set of flow angles of any bounded steady flow in the whole plane must be the whole circle unless the flow is a parallel shear flow. In an infinitely long horizontal strip or the upper half-plane supplemented with slip boundary conditions, besides the two types of flows appeared in the whole space case, there exists an additional class of steady flows for which the set of flow angles is either the upper or lower closed semicircles. This type of flows is proved to be the class of non-shear flows that have the least total curvature. As consequences, we obtain Liouville-type theorems for two-dimensional semilinear elliptic equations with only bounded and measurable nonlinearity, and the structural stability of shear flows whose all stagnation points are not inflection points, including Poiseuille flow as a special case. Our proof relies on the analysis of some quantities related to the curvature of the streamlines.
