Abstract:In this paper we study concentrated solutions of the three-dimensional Euler equations in helical symmetry without swirl. We prove that any helical vorticity solution initially concentrated around helices of pairwise distinct radii remains concentrated close to filaments. As suggested by the vortex filament conjecture, we prove that those filaments are translating and rotating helices. Similarly to what is obtained in other frameworks, the localization is weak in the direction of the movement but strong in its normal direction, and holds on an arbitrary long time interval in the naturally rescaled time scale. In order to prove this result, we derive a new explicit formula for the singular part of the Biot-Savart kernel in a two-dimensional reformulation of the problem. This allows us to obtain an appropriate decomposition of the velocity field to reproduce recent methods used to describe the dynamics of vortex rings or point-vortices for the lake equation.
Analysis of PDEs
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the dynamic behavior of the initial vorticity concentrated around spiral curves in three - dimensional inviscid and incompressible flows. Specifically, the authors studied the dynamic characteristics of concentrated solutions of the three - dimensional Euler equations with spiral symmetry in the absence of vorticity. They proved that any spiral vorticity solutions initially concentrated around spirals of different radii will still remain concentrated near filaments close to these spirals over a long period of time. According to the vortex - filament conjecture, these filaments are translating and rotating spirals. The key to the paper lies in obtaining an appropriate decomposition of the velocity field by deriving a new explicit formula for the singular part of the Biot - Savart kernel in a two - dimensional reformulation of the problem, in order to reproduce the methods recently used to describe the point - vortex dynamics of vortex rings or lake equations. ### Background and Objectives of the Paper The paper mainly focuses on the time evolution of the vorticity initially concentrated around spiral curves in three - dimensional inviscid fluids. The considered Euler equations describe the dynamics of a three - dimensional inviscid, incompressible fluid in the domain \(\Omega\): \[ \begin{cases} \partial_t U+(U\cdot\nabla)U = -\nabla P&\text{in }\Omega\times\mathbb{R}_+^*,\\ \text{div}(U) = 0&\text{in }\Omega\times\mathbb{R}_+,\\ U\cdot n = 0&\text{on }\partial\Omega\times\mathbb{R}_+ \end{cases} \] where \(n\) is the outer normal vector, \(U:\Omega\times\mathbb{R}_+^*\to\mathbb{R}^3\) represents the fluid velocity, and \(P\) is the pressure. ### Main Contributions 1. **New Biot - Savart Kernel Decomposition**: The authors derived a new explicit formula for the singular part of the Biot - Savart kernel in a two - dimensional reformulation of the problem, which enabled them to obtain an appropriate decomposition of the velocity field. 2. **Dynamic Stability**: It was proved that the spiral vorticity solutions initially concentrated around spirals of different radii will still remain concentrated near filaments close to these spirals over a long period of time. 3. **Weak Localization Property**: In the direction of motion, the localization is weak, but in its normal direction it is strong, and this localization holds over arbitrarily long time intervals on the time scale of natural scaling. ### Specific Results - **Theorem 1.1**: Suppose there exists \(R_U>0\) such that \(B(0, R_U)\subset U\). Let \((z_{i,0})_{1\leq i\leq N}\) be \(N\) points in \(B(0, R_U)\) satisfying \(|z_{i,0}|\neq|z_{j,0}|\) for each \(i\neq j\). Let \(\gamma_i\in\mathbb{R}^*\). For each \(\epsilon > 0\) such that \(\epsilon < R_U-\max_i|z_{i,0}|\), let \(\omega_0^\epsilon\in L^\infty(U)\) satisfy certain conditions. For \(T > 0\), let \((v^\epsilon,\omega^\epsilon)\) be the unique weak solution of system (1.5) on \([0, T]\). Then there exists a decomposition \(\omega^\epsilon=\sum_{i = 1}^N\omega_i^\epsilon\) satisfying: - Weak Localization Property: There exist constants \(C_T,\epsilon_T>0\) such that for any \(\epsilon\in(0,\epsilon_T]\), we have \[ \sup_{t\in[0, T]}\left|\gamm\right|
