Abstract:In our companion paper, we develop a new $SL_4$-web basis. Basis elements are given by certain planar graphs and are constructed so that important algebraic operations can be performed diagrammatically. A guiding principle behind our construction is that the long cycle $(12\ldots n) \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ should act by rotation of webs. Moreover, the bijection between webs and tableaux should intertwine rotation with the promotion action on tableaux. In this paper, we develop necessary notions of promotion permutations and promotion matrices, which are new even for standard tableaux. To support inductive arguments in the companion paper, we must however work in the more general setting of fluctuating tableaux, which we introduce and which subsumes many classes of tableaux that have been previously studied, including (generalized) oscillating, vacillating, rational, alternating, and (semi)standard tableaux. Therefore, we also give here a full development of the basic combinatorics and representation theory of fluctuating tableaux.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a generalized oscillating tableau and define a promotion operation on such tableaux that generalizes the classical promotion operation on standard Young tableaux. As our main application, we show that this promotion corresponds to rotation of the irreducible $A_2$-webs of G. Kuperberg.

Abstract:We prove a cyclic sieving result for the set of $3 \times k$ packed increasing tableaux with maximum entry $m :=3+k$ under K-promotion. The "curiosity" is that the sieving polynomial arises from the $q$-hook formula for standard tableaux of "toothbrush shape" $(2^3, 1^{k-2})$ with $m+1$ boxes, whereas K-promotion here only has order $m$.

Abstract:The first author recently introduced toric promotion, an operator that acts on the labelings of a graph $G$ and serves as a cyclic analogue of Schützenberger's promotion operator. Toric promotion is defined as the composition of certain toggle operators, listed in a natural cyclic order. We consider more general permutoric promotion operators, which are defined as compositions of the same toggles, but in permuted orders. We settle a conjecture of the first author by determining the orders of all permutoric promotion operators when $G$ is a path graph. In fact, we completely characterize the orbit structures of these operators, showing that they satisfy the cyclic sieving phenomenon. The first half of our proof requires us to introduce and analyze new broken promotion operators, which can be interpreted via globs of liquid gliding on a path graph. For the latter half of our proof, we reformulate the dynamics of permutoric promotion via stones sliding along a cycle graph and coins colliding with each other on a path graph.

A cyclic sieving phenomenon for symplectic tableaux

Abstract:We give a cyclic sieving phenomenon for symplectic $\lambda$-tableaux $SP(\lambda,2m)$, where $\lambda$ is a partition of an odd integer $n$ and $gcd(m,p)=1$ for any odd prime $p\leq n$. We use the crystal structure on Kashiwara-Nakashima symplectic tableaux to get a cyclic sieving action as the product $\sigma$ of simple reflections in the Weyl group. The cyclic sieving polynomial is the $q$-anologue of the hook-content formula for symplectic tableaux. More generally, we give a CSP for symplectic skew tableaux with analogous conditions on the shape and a cyclic group action that rotates tableaux weights in a way motivated by the $\sigma$-action.

Abstract:We define piecewise-linear and birational analogues of the toggle-involutions on order ideals of posets studied by Striker and Williams and use them to define corresponding analogues of rowmotion and promotion that share many of the properties of combinatorial rowmotion and promotion. Piecewise-linear rowmotion (like birational rowmotion) admits an alternative definition related to Stanley's transfer map for the order polytope; piecewise-linear promotion relates to Schützenberger promotion for semistandard Young tableaux. The three settings for these dynamical systems (combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational) are intimately related: the piecewise-linear operations arise as tropicalizations of the birational operations, and the combinatorial operations arise as restrictions of the piecewise-linear operations to the vertex-set of the order polytope. In the case where the poset is of the form $[a] \times [b]$, we exploit a reciprocal symmetry property recently proved by Grinberg and Roby to show that birational rowmotion (and consequently piecewise-linear rowmotion) is of order $a+b$. This yields a new proof of a theorem of Cameron and Fon-der-Flaass. Our proofs make use of the correspondence between rowmotion and promotion orbits discovered by Striker and Williams, which we make more concrete. We also prove some homomesy results, showing that for certain functions $f$, the average value of $f$ over each rowmotion/promotion orbit is independent of the orbit chosen.

Abstract:Promotion and rowmotion are intriguing actions in dynamical algebraic combinatorics which have inspired much work in recent years. In this paper, we study P -strict labelings of a finite, graded poset P of rank n and labels at most q , which generalize semistandard Young tableaux with n rows and entries at most q , under promotion. These P -strict labelings are in equivariant bijection with Q -partitions under rowmotion, where Q equals the product of P and a chain of q − n − 1 elements. We study the case where P equals the product of chains in detail, yielding new homomesy and order results in the realm of tableaux and beyond. Furthermore, we apply the bijection to the cases in which P is a minuscule poset and when P is the three element V poset. Finally, we give resonance results for promotion on P -strict labelings and rowmotion on Q -partitions.

Abstract:We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions. For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.

Abstract:We introduce tableau stabilization, a new phenomenon and statistic on Young tableaux based on jeu de taquin. We investigate bounds for tableau stabilization, the shape of stabilized tableaux, and tableau stabilization as a permutation statistic. We apply tableau stabilization to construct the sufficiently large rectangular tableaux fixed by powers of promotion, which were counted by Brendon Rhoades via the cyclic sieving phenomenon

Abstract:The cyclic sieving phenomenon was defined by Reiner, Stanton, and White in a 2004 paper. Let X be a finite set, C be a finite cyclic group acting on X, and f(q) be a polynomial in q with nonnegative integer coefficients. Then the triple (X,C,f(q)) exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon if, for all g in C, we have # X^g = f(w) where # denotes cardinality, X^g is the fixed point set of g, and w is a root of unity chosen to have the same order as g. It might seem improbable that substituting a root of unity into a polynomial with integer coefficients would have an enumerative meaning. But many instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon have now been found. Furthermore, the proofs that this phenomenon hold often involve interesting and sometimes deep results from representation theory. We will survey the current literature on cyclic sieving, providing the necessary background about representations, Coxeter groups, and other algebraic aspects as needed.

Abstract:We show that interlacing triangular arrays, introduced by Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler to study certain probability measures, can be used to compute structure constants for multiplying Schubert classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians, in the cohomology of their cotangent bundles, and in the cohomology of partial flag varieties. Our results are achieved by establishing a splitting lemma, allowing for interlacing triangular arrays of high rank to be decomposed into arrays of lower rank, and by constructing a bijection between interlacing triangular arrays of rank 3 with certain proper vertex colorings of the triangular grid graph that factors through generalizations of Knutson-Tao puzzles. Along the way, we prove one enumerative conjecture of Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler and disprove another.

Abstract:We employ general parabolic recursion methods to demonstrate the recently devised hypercube formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $S_n$, and establish its generalization to the full setting of a finite Coxeter system through algebraic proof. We introduce procedures for positive decompositions of $q$-derived Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials within this setting, that utilize classical Hecke algebra positivity phenomena of Dyer-Lehrer and Grojnowski-Haiman. This leads to a distinct algorithmic approach to the subject, based on induction from a parabolic subgroup. We propose suitable weak variants of the combinatorial invariance conjecture and verify their validity for permutation groups.

Abstract:We study Defant and Kravitz's generalization of Schützenberger's promotion operator to arbitrary labelings of finite posets in two directions. Defant and Kravitz showed that applying the promotion operator $n-1$ times to a labeling of a poset on $n$ elements always gives a natural labeling of the poset and called a labeling tangled if it requires the full $n-1$ promotions to reach a natural labeling. They also conjectured that there are at most $(n-1)!$ tangled labelings for any poset on $n$ elements. In the first direction, we propose a further strengthening of their conjecture by partitioning tangled labelings according to the element labeled $n-1$ and prove that this stronger conjecture holds for inflated rooted forest posets and a new class of posets called shoelace posets. In the second direction, we introduce sorting generating functions and cumulative generating functions for the number of labelings that require $k$ applications of the promotion operator to give a natural labeling. We prove that the coefficients of the cumulative generating function of the ordinal sum of antichains are log-concave and obtain a refinement of the weak order on the symmetric group.

Multiprojective Seshadri stratifications and Young-tableaux

Abstract:We provide an algebraic-geometrical interpretation of the classical semistandard Young-tableaux via the notion of Seshadri stratifications. The columns appearing in such a tableau correspond to vanishing multiplicities of certain rational functions on Schubert varieties. To build a framework for this correspondence we generalize Seshadri stratifications to multiprojective varieties, which forms the largest part of this article.

Abstract:A conjecture of Voisin states that two points on a smooth projective complex variety whose algebra of holomorphic forms is generated in degree 2 are rationally equivalent to each other if and only if their difference lies in the third step of the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In this note, we formulate a generalization that allows for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles of higher degree, at the expense of looking deeper in the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In the first half, we provide evidence in support of this conjecture in the case of abelian varieties and projective hyper-Kähler manifolds. Notably, we give explicit criteria for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles on moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces, generalizing that of Marian-Zhao. In the second half, in an effort to explain our main conjecture, we formulate a second conjecture predicting when the diagonal of a smooth projective variety belongs to a subalgebra of the ring of correspondences generated in low degree.

Ordinary primes in Hilbert modular varieties

Abstract:A well-known conjecture, often attributed to Serre, asserts that any motive over any number field has infinitely many ordinary reductions (in the sense that the Newton polygon coincides with the Hodge polygon). In the case of Hilbert modular cuspforms $f$ of parallel weight $(2, \cdots , 2)$, we show how to produce more ordinary primes by using the Sato-Tate equidistribution and combining it with the Galois theory of the Hecke field. Under the assumption of stronger forms of Sato-Tate equidistribution, we get stronger (but conditional) results. In the case of higher weights, we formulate the ordinariness conjecture for submotives of the intersection cohomology of proper algebraic varieties with motivic coefficients, and verify it for the motives whose $l$-adic Galois realisations are abelian on a finite index subgroup. We get some results for Hilbert cuspforms of weight $(3, \cdots , 3)$, weaker than those for $(2, \cdots , 2)$.

A skein action of the symmetric group on noncrossing partitions

Abstract:We introduce and study a new action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the vector space spanned by noncrossing partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ in which the adjacent transpositions $(i, i+1) \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ act on noncrossing partitions by means of skein relations. We characterize the isomorphism type of the resulting module and use it to obtain new representation theoretic proofs of cyclic sieving results due to Reiner-Stanton-White and Pechenik for the action of rotation on various classes of noncrossing partitions and the action of K-promotion on two-row rectangular increasing tableaux. Our skein relations generalize the Kauffman bracket (or Ptolemy relation) and can be used to resolve any set partition as a linear combination of noncrossing partitions in a $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant way.

Abstract:Cyclic sieving is a well-known phenomenon where certain interesting polynomials, especially $q$-analogues, have useful interpretations related to actions and representations of the cyclic group. We propose a definition of sieving for an arbitrary group $G$ and study it for the dihedral group $I_2(n)$ of order $2n$. This requires understanding the generators of the representation ring of the dihedral group. For $n$ odd, we exhibit several instances of dihedral sieving which involve the generalized Fibonomial coefficients, recently studied by Amdeberhan, Chen, Moll, and Sagan. We also exhibit an instance of dihedral sieving involving Garsia and Haiman's $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers.
