Abstract:As an appropriate analog of the Euclidean short-time Fourier transform, we study a windowed version of the Helgason-Fourier transform on the complex unit ball and translate the theory of modulation/coorbit spaces. As a result, atomic decompositions by means of Banach frames are obtained.

Abstract:We provide the foundations of a Hilbert space theory for the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) where the flat tori \begin{equation*} \mathbb{T}_{N}^2=\mathbb{R}^2/(\mathbb{Z}\times N\mathbb{Z})=[0,1]\times \lbrack 0,N] \end{equation*} act as phase spaces. We work on an $N$-dimensional subspace $S_{N}$ of distributions periodic in time and frequency in the dual $S_0'(\mathbb{R})$ of the Feichtinger algebra $S_0(\mathbb{R})$ and equip it with an inner product. To construct the Hilbert space $S_{N}$ we apply a suitable double periodization operator to $S_0(\mathbb{R})$. On $S_{N}$, the STFT is applied as the usual STFT defined on $S_0'(\mathbb{R})$. This STFT is a continuous extension of the finite discrete Gabor transform from the lattice onto the entire flat torus. As such, sampling theorems on flat tori lead to Gabor frames in finite dimensions. For Gaussian windows, one is lead to spaces of analytic functions and the construction allows to prove a necessary and sufficient Nyquist rate type result, which is the analogue, for Gabor frames in finite dimensions, of a well known result of Lyubarskii and Seip-Wallst{é}n for Gabor frames with Gaussian windows and which, for $N$ odd, produces an explicit \emph{full spark Gabor frame}. The compactness of the phase space, the finite dimension of the signal spaces and our sampling theorem offer practical advantages in some applications. We illustrate this by discussing a problem of current research interest: recovering signals from the zeros of their noisy spectrograms.

Abstract:We introduce an operator valued Short-Time Fourier Transform for certain classes of operators with operator windows, and show that the transform acts in an analogous way to the Short-Time Fourier Transform for functions, in particular giving rise to a family of vector-valued reproducing kernel Banach spaces, the so called coorbit spaces, as spaces of operators. As a result of this structure the operators generating equivalent norms on the function modulation spaces are fully classified. We show that these operator spaces have the same atomic decomposition properties as the function spaces, and use this to give a characterisation of the spaces using localisation operators.

Abstract:We use time-frequency methods for the study of Fourier Integral operators (FIOs). In this paper we shall show that Gabor frames provide very efficient representations for a large class of FIOs. Indeed, similarly to the case of shearlets and curvelets frames, the matrix representation of a Fourier Integral Operator with respect to a Gabor frame is well-organized. This is used as a powerful tool to study the boundedness of FIOs on modulation spaces. As special cases, we recapture boundedness results on modulation spaces for pseudo-differential operators with symbols in $M^{\infty,1}$, for some unimodular Fourier multipliers and metaplectic operators.

Abstract:Two different procedures for effecting a frequency analysis of a time-dependent signal locally in time are studied. The first procedure is the short-time or windowed Fourier transform; the second is the wavelet transform, in which high-frequency components are studied with sharper time resolution than low-frequency components. The similarities and the differences between these two methods are discussed. For both schemes a detailed study is made of the reconstruction method and its stability as a function of the chosen time-frequency density. Finally, the notion of time-frequency localization is made precise, within this framework, by two localization theorems.<>

Abstract:We study families of time-frequency localization operators and derive a new characterization of modulation spaces. This characterization relates the size of the localization operators to the global time-frequency distribution. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof for the existence of multi-window Gabor frames and extend the structure theory of Gabor frames.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new time-fractional-frequency transform, named -windowed Fourier transform ( -WFT) , where is a fractional parameter and is a window function. We investigate the fundamental properties of this generalized windowed Fourier transform. Then, we establish some Heisenberg-type inequality for the -WFT in the fractional Fourier domain and we also give a result concerning Lieb's inequality for -WFT. Furthermore, we study a relationship between the -WFT and a version of the fractional Wigner distribution introduced for this purpose. In the end, we introduce the semi-discrete and discrete version of the -WFT.

Abstract:We study quantum harmonic analysis (QHA) on the Bergman space $\mathcal{A}^2(\mathbb{B}^n)$ over the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We formulate a Wiener's Tauberian theorem, and characterizations of the radial Toeplitz algebra over $\mathcal{A}^2(\mathbb{B}^n)$. We discuss the $\alpha$-Berezin transform and investigate the question of approximations by Toeplitz operators.

Abstract:Time-frequency analysis is a modern branch of harmonic analysis. It com prises all those parts of mathematics and its applications that use the struc ture of translations and modulations (or time-frequency shifts) for the anal ysis of functions and operators. Time-frequency analysis is a form of local Fourier analysis that treats time and frequency simultaneously and sym metrically. My goal is a systematic exposition of the foundations of time-frequency analysis, whence the title of the book. The topics range from the elemen tary theory of the short-time Fourier transform and classical results about the Wigner distribution via the recent theory of Gabor frames to quantita tive methods in time-frequency analysis and the theory of pseudodifferential operators. This book is motivated by applications in signal analysis and quantum mechanics, but it is not about these applications. The main ori entation is toward the detailed mathematical investigation of the rich and elegant structures underlying time-frequency analysis. Time-frequency analysis originates in the early development of quantum mechanics by H. Weyl, E. Wigner, and J. von Neumann around 1930, and in the theoretical foundation of information theory and signal analysis by D.

Abstract:The author defines a set of operators which localize in both time and frequency. These operators are similar to but different from the low-pass time-limiting operator, the singular functions of which are the prolate spheroidal wave functions. The author's construction differs from the usual approach in that she treats the time-frequency plane as one geometric whole (phase space) rather than as two separate spaces. For disk-shaped or ellipse-shaped domains in time-frequency plane, the associated localization operators are remarkably simple. Their eigenfunctions are Hermite functions, and the corresponding eigenvalues are given by simple explicit formulas involving the incomplete gamma functions.<>

Coorbit Theory for Coefficients in Weighted Lebesgue Spaces, and its Application to the Wavelet Transform and the Short-Time Fourier Transform

Abstract:Starting with an integrable unitary representation of a locally compact group and its associated voice transform, coorbit theory describes the construction and investigation of the so-called coorbit spaces. A coorbit space consists of distributions of which the voice transform is contained in a given function space. We construct coorbit spaces which elements have voice transforms in weighted Lebesgue spaces. By applying this construction to the wavelet transform and short-time Fourier transform, we obtain special cases of the homogeneous Besov spaces and the modulation spaces, respectively. We also discretize the coorbit spaces in terms of Banach frames, where the frame vectors are contained in the orbit of some suitable element under the group action. For the two examples of the wavelet transform and the short-time Fourier transform, we derive sufficient conditions for a wavelet respectively a Gabor window to be suitable to generate such a Banach frame in the respective context.

Abstract:We study Daubechies' time-frequency localization operator, which is characterized by a window and weight function. We consider a Gaussian window and a spherically symmetric weight as this choice yields explicit formulas for the eigenvalues, with the Hermite functions as the associated eigenfunctions. Inspired by the fractal uncertainty principle in the separate time-frequency representation, we define the $n$-iterate spherically symmetric Cantor set in the joint representation. For the $n$-iterate Cantor set, precise asymptotic estimates for the operator norm are then derived up to a multiplicative constant.

Abstract:We obtain Gabor frame characterisations of modulation spaces defined via a class of translation-modulation invariant Banach spaces of distributions that was recently introduced in $[10]$. We show that these spaces admit an atomic decomposition through Gabor expansions and that they are characterised by summability properties of their Gabor coefficients. Furthermore, we construct a large space of admissible windows. This generalises several fundamental results for the classical modulation spaces $ M^{p,q}_{w}$. Due to the absence of solidity assumptions on the Banach spaces defining these modulation spaces, the methods used for the spaces $M^{p,q}_{w}$ (or, more generally, in coorbit space theory) fail in our setting and we develop here a new approach based on the twisted convolution.

Abstract:We introduce Quantum Time-Frequency Analysis, which expands the approach of Quantum Harmonic Analysis to include modulations of operators in addition to translations. This is done by a projective representation of double-phase space, and we consider the associated matrix coefficients and integrated representation. This leads to the polarised Cohen's class, which is an isomorphism from Hilbert-Schmidt operators to a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, and has orthogonality relations similar to many objects in classical time-frequency analysis. By considering a class of windows for the polarised Cohen's class that is smaller than the class of Hilbert-Schmidt operators, then we find spaces of modulation spaces of operators, and we consider the properties of these spaces, including discretisation results and mapping properties between function modulation spaces. We also compare modulation spaces of operators to known symbol classes for pseudodifferential operators. In many cases, using rank-one examples of operators, we recover familiar objects and results from classical time-frequency analysis and the theory of pseudodifferential operators.

Abstract:Gabor frames with Hermite functions are equivalent to sampling sequences in true Fock spaces of polyanalytic functions. In the L^2-case, such an equivalence follows from the unitarity of the polyanalytic Bargmann transform. We will introduce Banach spaces of polyanalytic functions and investigate the mapping properties of the polyanalytic Bargmann transform on modulation spaces. By applying the theory of coorbit spaces and localized frames to the Fock representation of the Heisenberg group, we derive explicit polyanalytic sampling theorems which can be seen as a polyanalytic version of the lattice sampling theorem discussed by J. M. Whittaker in Chapter 5 of his book "Interpolatory Function Theory".

Abstract:We introduce and study a new class of translation-modulation invariant Banach spaces of ultradistributions. These spaces show stability under Fourier transform and tensor products; furthermore, they have a natural Banach convolution module structure over a certain associated Beurling algebra, as well as a Banach multiplication module structure over an associated Wiener-Beurling algebra. We also investigate a new class of modulation spaces, the Banach spaces of ultradistributions $\mathcal{M}^F$ on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, associated to translation-modulation invariant Banach spaces of ultradistributions $F$ on $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$.

Abstract:It is the purpose of this article to compare various concepts of ``function spaces''. In particular we compare notions of the concept of Banach Function Spaces (in the spirit of Luxemburg-Zaanen) to the setting of solid BF-spaces as it is widely used in a number of papers in Time-Frequency Analysis or Coorbit Theory. More recently ball quasi-Banach function spaces come into the picture. In a way this note is a companion to the authors' article entitled ``Choosing Function Spaces in Harmonic Analysis'' (from 2015, February Fourier Talks at the Norbert Wiener Center, Vol.4) and the recent article by E.~Lorist and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Z.Nieraeth" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, entitled ``Banach Function Spaces done right'' (Indag. Math., 2023). We restrict our attention to the Banach space case, avoiding the complications arising in the quasi-Banach case.

A framework for stable spectral methods in $d$-dimensional unit balls

Abstract:The subject of this paper is the design of efficient and stable spectral methods for time-dependent partial differential equations in unit balls. We commence by sketching the desired features of a spectral method, which is defined by a choice of an orthonormal basis acting in the spatial domain. We continue by considering in detail the choice of a $W$-function basis in a disc in $\mathbb{R}^2$. This is a nontrivial issue because of a clash between two objectives: skew symmetry of the differentiation matrix (which ensures inter alia that the method is stable) and the correct behaviour at the origin. We resolve it by representing the underlying space as an affine space and splitting the underlying functions. This is generalised to any dimension $d \geq 2$ in a natural manner and the paper is concluded with numerical examples that demonstrate how our choice of basis attains the best outcome out of a number of alternatives.

Abstract:In the last decade it has become clear that one of the central themes within Gabor analysis (with respect to general time-frequency lattices) is a duality theory for Gabor frames, including the Wexler-Raz biorthogonality condition, the Ron-Shen's duality principle or Janssen's representation of a Gabor frame operator. All these results are closely connected with the so-called {\it Fundamental Identity of Gabor Analysis}, which we derive from an application of Poisson's summation formula for the symplectic Fourier transform. The new aspect of this presentation is the description of range of the validity of this Fundamental Identity of Gabor Analysis using Wiener amalgam spaces and Feichtinger's algebra $S_0(\R^d)$. Our approach is inspired by Rieffel's use of the Fundamental Identity of Gabor Analysis in the study of operator algebras generated by time-frequency shifts along a lattice, which was later independently rediscovered by Tolmieri/Orr, Janssen, and Daubechies et al., and Feichtinger/Kozek at various levels of generality, in the context of Gabor analysis.

Abstract:We introduce new frames, called \textit{metaplectic Gabor frames}, as natural generalizations of Gabor frames in the framework of metaplectic Wigner distributions. Namely, we develop the theory of metaplectic atoms in a full-general setting and prove an inversion formula for metaplectic Wigner distributions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Its discretization provides metaplectic Gabor frames. Next, we deepen the understanding of the so-called shift-invertible metaplectic Wigner distributions, showing that they can be represented, up to chirps, as rescaled short-time Fourier transforms. As an application, we derive a new characterization of modulation and Wiener amalgam spaces. Thus, these metaplectic distributions (and related frames) provide meaningful definitions of local frequencies and can be used to measure effectively the local frequency content of signals.
