Abstract:How does an irreducible representation of a group behave when restricted to a subgroup? This is part of branching problems, which are one of the fundamental problems in representation theory, and also interact naturally with other fields of mathematics. This expository paper is an up-to-date account on some new directions in representation theory highlighting the branching problems for real reductive groups and their related topics ranging from global analysis of manifolds via group actions to the theory of discontinuous groups beyond the classical Riemannian setting. This article is an outgrowth of the invited lecture that the author delivered at the commemorative event for the 70th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Mathematical Society of Japan, and originally appeared in Japanese in Sugaku 71 (2019).

A note on Rational Functions with three branching points on the Riemann sphere

Abstract:Studying the existence of rational functions with given branching datum is a classical problem in the field of complex analysis and algebraic geometry. This problem dates back to Hurwitz and remains open to this day. In this paper, we utilize complex analysis to establish a property of rational functions with 3 branching points on the Riemann sphere. Given two compact Riemann surfaces $M$ and $N$, a pair $(d,\mathcal{D})$ of an integer $d\geq2$ and a collection $\mathcal{D}$ of nontrivial partitions of $d$ is called a candidate branching datum if it satisfies the Riemann-Hurwitz formula. And a candidate branching datum is exceptional if there does not exist a rational function realization it. As applications, we present some new types of exceptional branching datum. These results cover some previous results mentioned in \cite{EKS84,PP06,Zhu19}. We also deduce the realizability of a certain type of candidate branching datum on the Riemann sphere.

Abstract:Let G G be a classical group defined over a local field F F of characteristic zero. For any irreducible admissible representation π \pi of G ( F ) G(F) , which is of Casselman-Wallach type if F F is archimedean, we extend the study of spectral decomposition of local descents by Jiang and Zhang [Algebra Number Theory 12 (2018), 1489–1535] for special orthogonal groups over non-archimedean local fields to more general classical groups over any local field F F . In particular, if π \pi has a generic local L L -parameter, we introduce the spectral first occurrence index f s ( π ) {\mathfrak {f}}_{\mathfrak {s}}(\pi ) and the arithmetic first occurrence index f a ( π ) {\mathfrak {f}}_{{\mathfrak {a}}}(\pi ) of π \pi and prove in this paper that f s ( π ) = f a ( π ) {\mathfrak {f}}_{\mathfrak {s}}(\pi )={\mathfrak {f}}_{{\mathfrak {a}}}(\pi ) . Based on the theory of consecutive descents of enhanced L L -parameters developed by Jiang, Liu, and Zhang [Arithmetic wavefront sets and generic L L -packets, arXiv:2207.04700], we are able to show in this paper that the first descent spectrum consists of all discrete series representations, which determines explicitly the branching decomposition problem by means of the relevant arithmetic data and extends the main result (Jiang and Zhang [Algebra Number Theory 12 (2018), 1489–1535], Theorem 1.7) to broader generality.

Abstract:Let g be a complex semisimple Lie algebra with an involutory automorphism theta. Let t be the corresponding symmetric subalgebra and h be a fundamental Cartan subalgebra of g containing a Cartan subalgebra t of t. Let Delta(g, h) and Delta(g, t) be the respective root systems of g with respect to h and t. The pair (Delta(g, h), theta) is a fundamental involutory root system. We prove that there exists natural 1-1 correspondences between theta-stable Weyl chambers of Delta(g, h) and Weyl chambers of Delta(g, t) and that the Weyl group of Delta(g, t) acts simply transitively on the above two sets of Weyl chambers. Regard a finite dimensional complex irreducible g-module V as a t-module, based on the above results we show that some certain irreducible modules of t will occur in V.

Abstract:In the present paper, the problem of sidebranches in the binary dendritic growth with enforced flow is studied. The positions of the first sidebranch and spacing of dendritic sidebranches are presented. For the neutral stable mode of dendritic growth, effects of various parameters on sidebranches are analysed. Our result shows that sidebranches are produced behind a critical point xi'(C).
B-brane Transport and Grade Restriction Rule for Determinantal Varieties

Abstract:We study autoequivalences of $D^{b}Coh(X)$ associated to B-brane transport around loops in the stringy Kähler moduli of $X$. We consider the case of $X$ being certain resolutions of determinantal varieties embedded in $\mathbb{P}^{d}\times G(k,n)$. Such resolutions have been modeled, in general, by nonabelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSM). We use the GLSM construction to determine the window categories associated with B-brane transport between different geometric phases using the machinery of grade restriction rule and the hemisphere partition function. In the family of examples analyzed the monodromies around phase boundaries enjoy the interpretation as loop inside link complements. We exploit this interpretation to find a decomposition of autoequivalences into simpler spherical functors and we illustrate this in two examples of Calabi-Yau 3-folds $X$, modeled by an abelian and nonabelian GLSM respectively. In additon we also determine explicitly the action of the autoequivalences on the Grothendieck group $K(X)$ (or equivalently, B-brane charges).

Perverse schobers, stability conditions and quadratic differentials

Abstract:We develop a unified approach for identifying spaces of stability conditions of triangulated categories arising from weighted marked surfaces with moduli spaces of quadratic differentials. This approach is based on the notion of a perverse schober (perverse sheaf of triangulated categories) and their triangulated categories of global sections. Under suitable conditions on the perverse schober, we identify mixed-angulations and their flips with finite-length hearts and their tilts, which then leads to the identification of moduli spaces. As an application we obtain a generalization of the results of Bridgeland--Smith to quadratic differentials with arbitrary singularity type (zero/pole/exponential).

Abstract:For a semisimple Lie group $G$ satisfying the equal rank condition, the most basic family of unitary irreducible representations is the Discrete Series found by Harish-Chandra. In this paper, we continue our study of the branching laws for Discrete Series when restricted to a subgroup $H$ of the same type by use of integral and differential operators in combination with our previous duality principle. Many results are presented in generality, others are shown in detail for Holomorphic Discrete Series.

Double ramification cycles within degeneracy loci via moduli of roots

Abstract:Over the past decade, Janda, Pandharipande, Pixton, and Zvonkine introduced an extremely useful method using $r$th roots for singling out fundamental classes on moduli of curves within polynomials arising from Riemann--Roch. The so-called double ramification (DR) cycles provide a natural framework embracing most of these classes. They are both fundamental in recent developments in enumerative geometry and central in algebraic geometry, because they express the loci where line bundles on a family of curves are trivial along the fibres. The aim of this paper is to show that the above $r$th root method can be regarded as a technique to remove excess intersection occurring in the presence of an unwanted subcurve which we call the parasitic curve. To this end, we reinterpret the DR cycle as a distinguished component of the degeneracy class of a map of vector bundles. When applied to moduli of $r$th roots and combined with a Riemann--Roch computation, this point of view yields a proof of the Hodge-DR Conjecture, along with new proofs of many known formulae for DR cycles and logarithmic DR cycles. Our proofs are valid in arbitrary characteristic.

Thick points of 4D critical branching Brownian motion

Abstract:We study the thick points of branching Brownian motion and branching random walk with a critical branching mechanism, focusing on the critical dimension $d = 4$. We determine the exponent governing the probability to hit a small ball with an exceptionally high number of pioneers, showing that this has a second-order transition between an exponential phase and a stretched-exponential phase at an explicit value ($a = 2$) of the thickness parameter $a$. We apply the outputs of this analysis to prove that the associated set of thick points $\mathcal{T}(a)$ has dimension $(4-a)_+$, so that there is a change in behaviour at $a=4$ but not at $a = 2$ in this case. Along the way, we obtain related results for the nonpositive solutions of a boundary value problem associated to the semilinear PDE $\Delta v = v^2$ and develop a strong coupling between tree-indexed random walk and tree-indexed Brownian motion that allows us to deduce analogues of some of our results in the discrete case. We also obtain in each dimension $d\geq 1$ an infinite-order asymptotic expansion for the probability that critical branching Brownian motion hits a distant unit ball, finding that this expansion is convergent when $d\neq 4$ and divergent when $d=4$. This reveals a novel, dimension-dependent critical exponent governing the higher-order terms of the expansion, which we compute in every dimension.

Abstract:We consider connectivity properties of the Branching Interlacements model in $\mathbb{Z}^d,~d\ge5$, recently introduced by Angel, R\'ath and Zhu in 2016. Using stochastic dimension techniques we show that every two vertices visited by the branching interlacements are connected via at most $\lceil d/4\rceil$ conditioned critical branching random walks from the underlying Poisson process, and that this upper bound is sharp. In particular every such two branching random walks intersect if and only if $5\le d\le 8$. The stochastic dimension of branching random walk result is of independent interest. We additionally obtain heat kernel bounds for branching random walks conditioned on survival.
Going to the Other Side via the Resurgent Bridge

Abstract:Using resurgent analysis we offer a novel mathematical perspective on a curious bijection (duality) that has many potential applications ranging from the theory of vertex algebras to the physics of SCFTs in various dimensions, to q-series invariants in low-dimensional topology that arise, e.g. in Vafa-Witten theory and in non-perturbative completion of complex Chern-Simons theory. In particular, we introduce explicit numerical algorithms that efficiently implement this bijection. This bijection is founded on preservation of relations, a fundamental property of resurgent functions. Using resurgent analysis we find new structures and patterns in complex Chern-Simons theory on closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds obtained by surgeries on hyperbolic twist knots. The Borel plane exhibits several intriguing hints of a new form of integrability. An important role in this analysis is played by the twisted Alexander polynomials and the adjoint Reidemeister torsion, which help us determine the Stokes data. The method of singularity elimination enables extraction of geometric data even for very distant Borel singularities, leading to detailed non-perturbative information from perturbative data. We also introduce a new double-scaling limit to probe 0-surgeries from the limiting $r\to\infty$ behavior of 1/r surgeries, and apply it to the family of hyperbolic twist knots.

Abstract:Given I , B ∈ N ∪ { 0 } , we investigate the existence and geometry of complete finitely branched minimal surfaces M in R 3 with Morse index at most I and total branching order at most B. Previous works of Fischer-Colbrie ("On complete minimal surfaces with finite Morse index in 3-manifolds," Invent. Math., vol. 82, pp. 121–132, 1985) and Ros ("One-sided complete stable minimal surfaces," J. Differ. Geom., vol. 74, pp. 69–92, 2006) explain that such surfaces are precisely the complete minimal surfaces in R 3 of finite total curvature and finite total branching order. Among other things, we derive scale-invariant weak chord-arc type results for such an M with estimates that are given in terms of I and B. In order to obtain some of our main results for these special surfaces, we obtain general intrinsic monotonicity of area formulas for m-dimensional submanifolds Σ of an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold X, where these area estimates depend on the geometry of X and upper bounds on the lengths of the mean curvature vectors of Σ. We also describe a family of complete, finitely branched minimal surfaces in R 3 that are stable and non-orientable; these examples generalize the classical Henneberg minimal surface.

Abstract:In the light of $\phi$-mapping method and topological current theory, the topological structure and the topological quantization of arbitrary dimensional topological defects are obtained under the condition that the Jacobian $J(\phi/v) \neq 0$. When $J(\phi/v)=0$, it is shown that there exist the crucial case of branch process. Based on the implicit function theorem and the Taylor expansion, we detail the bifurcation of generalized topological current and find different directions of the bifurcation. The arbitrary dimensional topological defects are found splitting or merging at the degenerate point of field function $\vec \phi$ but the total charge of the topological defects is still unchanged.

Notes on hyperbolic branching Brownian motion

Abstract:Euclidean branching Brownian motion (BBM) has been intensively studied during many decades by renowned researchers. BBM on hyperbolic space has received less attention. A profound study of Lalley and Sellke (1997) provided insight on the recurrent, resp. transient regimes of BBM on the Poincare' disk. In particular, they determined the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set on the boundary circle in dependence on the fission rate of the branching particles. In the present notes, further features are exhibited. The rates of the maximal and minimal hyperbolic distances to the starting point are determined, as well as refined asymptotic estimates in the transient regime. The other main issues studied here concern the behaviour of the empiricial distributions of the branching population, as time goes to infinity, and their convergence to an infinitely supported random limit probability measure on the boundary.
