Abstract:In Search of the Wave is a computer-generated film made in 2013, highlighting the computation of images through computer simulation, and through text and voice. Originating from a screening of the film at the Gustave Eiffel University, the article presents a reflection on research-creation in and from algorithmic images. Fundamentally, what is it in this research-creation -- especially in research on algorithmic imagery -- that can be set in motion? Without fully distinguishing between what would be research on one hand and creation on the other, we focus on characterizing forms, aesthetics, or theories that contribute to possible shifts. The inventory of these possibilities is precisely the challenge of the text: from mathematics to image and visualization, from the birth of generative aesthetics to the coding related to pioneering works (recoding), or from indexing new aesthetics to new forms of critical production.

Abstract:Glacier and ice-sheet motion is fundamental to glaciology. However, there is still no clear consensus for the optimal way to describe glacier and ice-sheet sliding. Typically, sliding is parameterised using a traction coefficient nominally linked to a given theory describing one or a limited set of sliding processes. However, this approach precludes the possibility of multiple simultaneous and spatio-temporally varying sliding modes with inaccuracies resulting in model error propagation as the system evolves away from the conditions under which it was optimised for. Here, revisiting early theoretical work, we describe glacier sliding as a scale- and setting-dependent 'inner flow' that arises from multiple overlapping sub-processes, bridging divides between hard and soft beds, rough and smooth beds, and stick-slip and continuous sliding as well as providing a consistent definition for form drag. The corresponding 'outer flow' then accounts for 'normal' ice deformation. We propose that the significance of 'Iken's bound' is then reduced if form drag dominates over subglacial cavitation in a given region, possibly explaining the persistent functionality of Weertman-type sliding in process-agnostic sliding studies over rough topography. Last, reviewing observation-based studies we suggest that a simple 'unified' sliding relationship controlled by a single tunable coefficient may not be a realistic prospect, but that a Weertman-type relationship with careful consideration of the power value is presently the 'least bad' option.

Abstract:Clothing, as both functional and fashionable, has become a key marker in signifying and shaping personal identity. This is particularly clear in a range of “lifestyle sports” [Wheaton, B. 2004. “Introduction: Mapping the Lifestyle Sportscape.” In Understanding Lifestyle Sports: Consumption, Identity, and Difference, edited by B. Wheaton, 1–28. London: Routledge], including the array of practices associated with the culture of surfing. This paper examines the ways in which companies market performance clothing to surfers. By critically analysing the ways in which wetsuits, rash vests, body gloves, and neoprene boots are advertised by companies such as Billabong, Quiksilver, RipCurl, and O'Neill, this paper outlines how particular engagements with waves are designed into these forms of dress, and how specific cultural performances and identities are encouraged through their marketing. The paper suggests that four cultural ideals become integral to the “dress code” for performance surf wear, namely: (1) Unique Surfing Performance, (2) Cultural Authenticity, (3) Transient Engagements, and (4) Cyborgian Skin. The paper will argue how this marketing of active surf dress is important as it not only signifies particular types of identity within surfing culture, but also valorizes specific types of communion with the surf zone.

Abstract:The article is an attempt to contribute to explorations of a common origin for language and planned-collaborative action. It gives `semantics of change' the central stage in the synthesis, from its history and recordkeeping to its development, its syntax, delivery and reception, including substratal aspects. It is suggested that to arrive at a common core, linguistic semantics must be understood as studying through syntax mobile agent's representing, tracking and coping with change and no change. Semantics of actions can be conceived the same way, but through plans instead of syntax. The key point is the following: Sequencing itself, of words and action sequences, brings in more structural interpretation to the sequence than which is immediately evident from the sequents themselves. Mobile sequencers can be understood as subjects structuring reporting, understanding and keeping track of change and no change. The idea invites rethinking of the notion of category, both in language and in planning. Understanding understanding change by mobile agents is suggested to be about human extended practice, not extended-human practice. That's why linguistics is as important as computer science in the synthesis. It must rely on representational history of acts, thoughts and expressions, personal and public, crosscutting overtness and covertness of these phenomena. It has implication for anthropology in the extended practice, which is covered briefly.

Abstract:In this article, I discuss the 2016 Brazilian surf movie Um Filme de Surfe by Bruno Zanin and Leandro Dora, featuring surfers Yago Dora, Yuri Gonçalves and Lucas Silveira. This small group of Brazilian surfers and their camera crew travel on a chartered boat to an island in the Indian Ocean to catch an incoming swell, where they pretend to find an unknown surf paradise. While doing so, they orientalise the local Indonesian culture as an exotic, pre-modern 'other' who they, the 'translocal' modern surfers, encounter and teach about modernity. I will also examine how they perform a 'bro' masculinity that forms a 'fratriarchy' based on hijinks and pranks. In Um Filme de Surfe, the Brazilian surfers neglect to establish a dialogue with the local Indonesian islanders. They do not represent themselves as postcolonial subjects visiting a fellow culture from the global South; they are the cosmopolitan translocal surfers and the locals are mistaken for Polynesian islanders. I will then discuss how this film broadly reflects the challenge of representing non-white, non-Western surfers in the genre of surf films.

Abstract:Surfing is a sporting activity that has become a major business, integrated in the leisure and tourism industries. Due to the impact of surf tourism and to the surfers’ characteristics featured by the time and effort they invest in surfing and their propensity to travel in search for the perfect wave, it is important to understand if the six serious leisure qualities (perseverance, career, effort, benefits, ethos and identity) are related with socio-demographic characteristics, surfing profile, surf travel behaviour and surfing destination attributes preferences. Aiming to achieve these goals, an online survey (in the form of a questionnaire) was applied to a casual sample of 200 surfers in Portugal. The results of this study demonstrate that surfers exhibit the six serious leisure qualities and have a strong disposition to travel for surfing. Moreover, the results highlight that surfers value mainly the surfing natural conditions when choosing a surfing travel destination. Statistical tests also allowed concluding that socio-demographic variables are not good predictors of serious surfing, although serious surfing is correlated with surfing profile, surf travel behaviour and surfing destination attributes preferences. This data enables to provide important information that can be used to strengthen management strategies by surf tourism industry providers.

Abstract:Ecological change at the hands of humans is strikingly evident in Tierra del Fuego, so too human transformation at the mercy of geography. This mirroring between the human and the ecological is what captured my attention when I first visited in early 2010, and it has been the driving force for my curatorial practice ever since. What does it mean for the work of a curator to be motivated by an archipelago? How does it transform the definition of curatorial practice? What does curating for an archipelago entail? To answer these questions, I explore the relationship between myself and my subject of study in a literary manner. In what could be called a fictocritical (Stephen Muecke, 'What is fictocritism?', in The Mother's Day Protest and other Fictocritical Essays, Rowman and Littlefield International, London, 2016, p xiii) style I address Tierra del Fuego as an 'actant' (in the Latourian sense of non-human entities that have agency as explained in Bruno Latour, 'On Actor-network Theory: A Few Clarifications', Soziale Welt 47, no 4, 1996, pp 369-381) or as a hyperobject (this term refers to objects so massively distributed in time and space as to transcend localisation, such as climate change, Styrofoam, and the wind. I classify the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego within this category of hyperobjects as defined by Timothy Morton, Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World, University of Minnesota Press, London, 2013) and tell it stories. By revealing how I came to know my subject rather than what I know about it I aim to enact a practice of transversal ecological address (this article is one of a series of multi-versed approaches to writing on Tierra del Fuego. In other essays, I adopt different tones of voice when addressing different 'characters'. These tones of voices are not just metaphorical, but performative for each essay and are forged through dramatised rehearsals of past or possible encounters).
Countertexting One Another: Conceptual Poetics, Flarf, And Derridean Countersignature

Abstract:Using the precedent of Charles Bernstein's spoof on Charles Olson's 'Projective Verse' poetics manifesto as part of a long contextual introduction on issues of literary filiation, influence, and intertextuality, this essay analyses the recent exchanges between conceptualist poetry (Vanessa Place, Kenneth Goldsmith's 'uncreative writing') and 'flarf' (Drew Gardner) in the light of Derrida's twin notions of signature and countersignature. In the process it ties together reading and writing(-as-rereading) in response and co-responsibility in order to theorise the critical notion of 'countertextuality' as a more contemporary inflection of the mechanics of literary interaction known as intertextuality, better suited to characterise the textual interaction between current poetic movements. The critical apparatus and developments in the footnotes are also conceived as a creative enactment of the countertext, whose final instance (the epilogue, or 'Necrologue') is a parodic rewriting performatively exposing the creative impasse and derivativeness of several recent textual productions mimicking Sol LeWitt's 'Sentences on Conceptual Art'. As it moves towards its final critical part, the essay also puts forward, while enacting them, more general views about the relative sterility of some aspects of contemporary poetic debates while gesturing for a possible way out, via Felix Bernstein's 'Notes on Postconceptual Poetry', in order to reclaim 'the genuinely imaginary-affective-intellectual fabric and texture of the poetical'.

Abstract:Abstract The paper starts with signs that Cooper and I found in the Old City of Jerusalem. It describes how the term Linguistic Landscape was applied to the recollections of francophone high school students of the signs they had seen. It traces the many collections of photos employing digital cameras and cell-phones, and research that was derived from these collections, including published papers and books, a journal, and an annual workshop. The paper regrets the rarity of details of authorship (but reports who was responsible for the Jerusalem street signs), and the tendency to interpret signs without detailing authorship. Signs provide evidence of the state of literacy, but ignore the sociolinguistic make-up of the local community, missing that for earlier scholars “linguistic landscape” meant speech as well as writing. It regrets the paucity of efforts to provide a theory of public signage, arguing that this could be derived from the field of Semiotics.
The Significance of Mobility in Alfred Schutz’s Theory of Action

Abstract:Mobility has become a central topic of contemporary social research with the mobility turn initiated in the 2000s. In order to grasp the complexity of the global order, its authors have attempted to decenter the importance of human subjectivity and to envisage a "sociology beyond societies". The present paper considers this interpretive context to demonstrate the contemporary relevance of Alfred Schutz's theory of action, and to propose a notion of mobility intrinsically linked to the performance of subjectivity. By revisiting the distinction between action as a thing produced and as an ongoing process, the notion of mobility is detailed in relation to movement in space and to the subjective flow of time. The specific type of action Schutz calls "locomotion" in his later work enables us to understand how action involves bodily operations in configuring a common space of sociality and communication. I conclude by going beyond the explanation of action in terms of its starting point and end point, and by assessing how action unfolds through the experiential life of the subject, with its new meanings and unexpected changes.

Abstract:The paper links critique of 'inner process' to a perspective that treats language as activity that is accomplished by living beings. The view traces reading to human ways of coordinating with 'the seen'. Having contrasted this distributed view with organism-first alternatives, I use a case study of reports to sketch how readers engage with written materials to both select details and project an imagined 'source' (e.g. a meaning, author or intention). Far from using inner process ('decoding') readers coordinate with a field of patternings. Where skilled, they use recollecting to link looking, silent thinking, expectations and strategic moves. Using judgements, they transform what they observe by setting off experience. I thus build on Wittgenstein's critique of inner process while also endorsing Trybulec's (2019) radicalization of his view. To avoid treating the sense of 'written words' as subjective, the material aspect of patternings is taken to index outward criteria (roughly, standards of judgement). In seeking to replace theories that presuppose 'text', I stress how patternings invite directed sensorimotor activity by an intelligent person. Indeed, since persons learn to see wordings (or take a language stance) arrangements of patternings act as marks, 'symbols' and aggregations that set off recollection, judgements and iterated action. Skilled readers can use re-reading, the already read etc. to modulate ways of attending. Readers link the said, hints, recollections and ways of actualizing movements to grant reading experience a specific sense. By considering how outer criteria are evoked, reading is traced back to skilled linguistic action.

Abstract:We investigate the sliding of objects on an inclined granular surface close to the avalanche threshold. Our experiments show that the stability is driven by the surface deformations. Heavy objects generate footprint-like deformations which stabilize the objects on the slopes. Light objects do not disturb the sandy surfaces and are also stable. For intermediate weights, the deformations of the surface destabilize the objects and generate sliding. A characteristic pressure for which the solid friction is minimal is evidenced. Applications to the locomotion of devices and animals on sandy slopes as a function of their mass are proposed.

Surfing on minima of isostatic landscapes: avalanches and unjamming transition

Abstract:Recently, we showed that optimization problems, both in infinite as well as in finite dimensions, for continuous variables and soft excluded volume constraints, can display entire isostatic phases where local minima of the cost function are marginally stable configurations endowed with non-linear excitations [1,2]. In this work we describe an athermal adiabatic algorithm to explore with continuity the corresponding rough high-dimensional landscape. We concentrate on a prototype problem of this kind, the spherical perceptron optimization problem with linear cost function (hinge loss). This algorithm allows to "surf" between isostatic marginally stable configurations and to investigate some properties of such landscape. In particular we focus on the statistics of avalanches occurring when local minima are destabilized. We show that when perturbing such minima, the system undergoes plastic rearrangements whose size is power law distributed and we characterize the corresponding critical exponent. Finally we investigate the critical properties of the unjamming transition, showing that the linear interaction potential gives rise to logarithmic behavior in the scaling of energy and pressure as a function of the distance from the unjamming point. For some quantities, the logarithmic corrections can be gauged out. This is the case of the number of soft constraints that are violated as a function of the distance from jamming which follows a non-trivial power law behavior.

Abstract:Dans une etude comparative de salutations dans les echanges entre amis en Australie et en France (Beal et Traverso 2010), les pratiques interactionnelles observees dans le corpus rassemble presentent certes des points communs, mais aussi des specificites verbales et non verbales dont la recurrence est interpretee comme revelant un lien entre styles conversationnels et valeurs culturelles sous-jacentes.Comme le fait egalement la pragmatique comparee en general, cette conclusion souleve des questions de representation pour l’audiovisuel et la traduction audiovisuelle : comment les routines conversationnelles sont-elles projetees dans les dialogues de film et dans leurs traductions par le biais du sous-titrage ou du doublage ? Quel est l’impact de ces representations sur les spectateurs ? Ces questions servent de base a une etude de cas qui s’attache dans cet article aux salutations et autres routines conversationnelles dans les sous-titres en anglais de trois films contemporains, deux en francais, un en espagnol. Elles sont abordees dans une perspective de pragmatique comparee et avec pour toile de fond la theorie du mode de Fowler (1991, 2000), aux fins d’evaluer le potentiel textuel des sous-titres de film a signifier dans une perspective interculturelle.

Gold Coast, Australia, ISSN 0749.0208 Surfing is a major recreational and economic activity involving intimate human interaction with diverse coastal environments and is expanding both in intensity in traditional locations, as well as in reach into new environments often in the developing world. The value of surfing to both Australia's and the global economy has grown significantly over the past three decades. This combined with the significant growth in participation and rising popularity of surfing and surfing culture in many countries, means that the importance of the economic and social value of surfing to various regions cannot be understated. While there is a growing literature on the value of surfing tourism, especially in the South-East Asian region and of proposed artificial surfing reefs, there is little documented evidence of the value of recreational surfing in more traditional locations such as Australia and the USA, where it has been estimated that over two-million Australians and two-and-a-half million Americans surf on a regular basis. This paper presents findings from a three-year study using proven economic methodologies as well as those from the other social sciences to collect data on the market and non-market value of surfing at two locations in Australia. The findings demonstrate the significant economic, social and cultural importance of surfing amenity to specific locales, including the need to consider any negative impacts on surf breaks and the environment that may occur as a result of development, coastal planning and protection works.
