Abstract:Levitation of objects with action at a distance has always been intriguing to humans. Several ways to achieve this, such as aerodynamic, acoustic, or electromagnetic methods, including radiation pressure, stable potential wells, and quantum Casimir-Lifshitz forces, exist. A fascinating approach for levitation is that of magnets over superconductors based on the Meissner effect -the expulsion of the magnetic field by a superconductor. With the advent of metamaterials -designed structures with electromagnetic properties that may not be found in nature- we ask whether a material may be conceived exhibiting similar field expulsion, but involving the electric field. We show how a special subcategory of metamaterials, called epsilon-near-zero materials, exhibits such electric classic analog to the Meissner effect, exerting a repulsion on nearby sources. Repulsive forces using anisotropic and chiral metamaterials have been investigated, but our proposal uses a different mechanism based on field expulsion, and is very robust to both losses and material dispersion.

Modelling of Electromagnetic Levitation - Consequences on Non-contact Physical Properties Measurements

Abstract:Electromagnetic levitation of electrically conductive droplets by alternating magnetic fields is a technique used to determine the physical properties of liquid metallic alloys such as surface tension, viscosity, heat capacity and thermal diffusivity/1/. To improve accuracy, it is mandatory to reduce electromagnetic stirring and shaping of the droplet, therefore experiments are conducted in microgravity. Properties are deduced from direct measurements of position or temperature using specific models. Our purpose is to check various assumptions on which those models are built by the use of adapted numerical codes. We first compare experimental and numerical results concerning the shape and mass centre oscillation frequencies of electromagnetically levitated Nickel droplets. Axisymmetric numerical model yields equilibrium shapes and positions of the droplets in a good agreement with experiment. Then, fluid flow effects on the measurement precision of surface tension and viscosity by comparing expecte and calculated properties values are charcterized. We determine critical values of initial droplet distortion or magnetic field intensity which can lead to an overestimate of the value of viscosity. We also calculate flow effects of heat capacity and thermal conductivity values.

MightyLev: An acoustic levitator for high-temperature containerless processing of medium- to high-density materials

Abstract:"MightyLev," a new multi-emitter ultrasonic acoustic levitation device capable of extremely stable levitation of materials of density up to at least 11.3 g cm-3, is described. The exceptional stability of medium- to high-density samples levitated in MightyLev makes the device highly suitable for chemical and structural analysis using micro-focused spectroscopic and x-ray scattering techniques. In combination with mid-infrared laser heating, MightyLev is capable of levitating metallic and oxide materials during high-temperature cycling and melting above 1500 K. Instabilities in particle confinement during heating were investigated by directly visualizing the acoustic field using schlieren imaging. The results reveal jets of hot-air directed along the anti-nodes of the acoustic field. The reaction force on the sample from the jet, coupled with the restoring force of the acoustic trap, generates a parametric lateral oscillation of the sample. This result provides valuable insight for future optimization and wider application of acoustic levitation for high-temperature containerless material processing.

Abstract:We propose to introduce additional control in levitated optomechanics by trapping a meta-atom, i.e., a subwavelength and high-permittivity dielectric particle supporting Mie resonances. In particular, we theoretically demonstrate that optical levitation and center-of-mass ground-state cooling of silicon nanoparticles in vacuum is not only experimentally feasible but it offers enhanced performance over widely used silica particles in terms of trap frequency, trap depth, and optomechanical coupling rates. Moreover, we show that, by adjusting the detuning of the trapping laser with respect to the particle's resonance, the sign of the polarizability becomes negative, enabling levitation in the minimum of laser intensity, e.g., at the nodes of a standing wave. The latter opens the door to trapping nanoparticles in the optical near-field combining red and blue-detuned frequencies, in analogy to two-level atoms, which is of interest for generating strong coupling to photonic nanostructures and short-distance force sensing.

Abstract:Transitions from the liquid to the solid state of matter are omnipresent. They form a crucial step in the industrial solidification of metallic alloy melts and are greatly influenced by the thermophysical properties of the melt. Knowledge of the thermophysical properties of liquid metallic alloys is necessary in order to gain a tight control over the solidification pathway, and over the obtained material structure of the solid. Measurements of thermophysical properties on ground are often difficult, or even impossible, since liquids are strongly influenced by earth's gravity. Another problem is the reactivity of melts with container materials, especially at high temperature. Finally, deep undercooling, necessary to understand nucleus formation and equilibrium as well as non-equilibrium solidification, can only be achieved in a containerless environment. Containerless experiments in microgravity allow precise benchmark measurements of thermophysical properties. The electromagnetic levitator ISS-EML on the International Space Station (ISS) offers perfect conditions for such experiments. This way, data for process simulations is obtained, and a deeper understanding of nucleation, crystal growth, microstructural evolution, and other details of the transformation from liquid to solid can be gained. Here, we address the scientific questions in detail, show highlights of recent achievements, and give an outlook on future work.

Abstract:A novel experimental setup to measure deviations from the distance dependence of Newtonian gravity was proposed in Donini and Marimón (Eur Phys J C 76:696, 2016). The underlying theoretical idea was to study the orbits of a microscopically-sized planetary system composed of a "Satellite", with mass g, and a "Planet", with mass g at an initial distance of hundreds of microns. The detection of precession of the orbit in this system would be an unambiguous indication of a central potential with terms that scale with the distance differently from 1/ r . This is a huge advantage with respect to the measurement of the absolute strength of the attraction between two bodies, as most electrically-induced background potentials do indeed scale as 1/ r . Detection of orbit precession is unaffected by these effects, allowing for better sensitivities. In Baeza-Ballesteros et al. (Eur Phys J C 82:154, 2022), the impact of other subleading backgrounds that may induce orbit precession, such as, e.g., the electrical Casimir force or general relativity, was studied in detail. It was found that the proposed setup could test Yukawa-like corrections, to the 1/ r potential with couplings as low as for distances as small as m, improving by roughly an order of magnitude present bounds. In this paper, we start to move from a theoretical study of the proposal to a more realistic implementation of the experimental setup. As a first step, we study the impact of air viscosity on the proposed setup and see how the setup should be modified in order to preserve the theoretical sensitivity achieved in Donini and Marimón (2016) and Baeza-Ballesteros et al. (2022).

Maximum-Likelihood Analysis of the COBE Angular Correlation Function

Abstract:We have used maximum-likelihood estimation to determine the quadrupole amplitude $Q_{\rm rms-PS}$ and the spectral index $n$ of the density fluctuation power spectrum at recombination from the \cobe\ DMR data. We find a strong correlation between the two parameters of the form $Q_{\rm rms-PS}=(15.7\pm 2.6)\exp[0.46(1-n)]\mk$ for fixed $n$. Our result is slightly smaller than and has a smaller statistical uncertainty than the 1992 estimate of Smoot et al.

Abstract:This publication deals with the estimation of viscosity of liquid metals. It is proposed to discuss the possibility to determine this parameter during aerodynamic levitation experiments performed in ground laboratory. Once in liquid state, metallic sample is submitted to acoustic waves through the levitation gas making it oscillate and deform. A high speed camera records the radial periodic deformation during the relaxation period, meaning when incident waves stop. The evolutions of the sample radius over time are extracted from records and compared with analytical model based on the damped oscillator. The estimation of viscosity is performed by inverse method and leads to overestimated values by comparison with expected values. Then, numerical simulations (CFD) including or not levitation gas and gravity are performed to show the impact of gravity during measurements. New viscosity estimations show that the damped oscillation model (Lamb’s theory) as it is classically used is not valid in aerodynamic levitation due to the influence of both gravity and gas.

Resonant analogue configurations in atomic condensates

Abstract:As a contribution to a memorial volume, we provide a comprehensive discussion of resonant configurations in analogue gravity, focusing on its implementation in atomic condensates and combining review features with original insights and calculations. In particular, we analyze the analogues of the Andreev and Hawking effects using a microscopic description based on the Bogoliubov approximation. We contemplate several resonant scenarios whose efficiency to enhance anomalous scattering processes is compared to that of non-resonant setups. The presence of quantum signatures in analogue configurations, such as the violation of Cauchy-Schwarz inequalities or entanglement, is analyzed, observing that resonant configurations highly increase the entanglement signal, especially for the Andreev effect. We also discuss how these results have served as inspiration for the rapidly expanding field of quantum information in high-energy colliders. Finally, we study the physics of black-hole lasers as further examples of resonant analogue structures, distinguishing three stages in its time evolution. For short times, we compute the linear and non-linear spectrum for different models. For intermediate times, we generalize the current analysis of the BHL-BCL crossover. For long times, we discuss the emerging concept of spontaneous Floquet state and its potential implications.

Abstract:Motivated by the current interest in employing quantum sensors on Earth and in space to conduct searches for new physics, we provide a perspective on the suitability of large-mass levitated optomechanical systems for observing dark matter signatures. We discuss conservative approaches of recoil detection through spectral analysis of coherently scattered light, enhancements of directional effects due to cross-correlation spectral densities, and the possibility of using quantum superpositions of mesoscopic test particles to measure rare events.

Abstract:Optically-induced magnetic resonances in non-magnetic media have unlocked magnetic light-matter interactions and led to new technologies in many research fields. Previous proposals for the levitation of nanoscale particles without structured illumination have worked on the basis of epsilon-near-zero surfaces or anisotropic materials but these carry with them significant fabrication difficulties. We report the optical levitation of a magnetic dipole over a wide range of realistic materials, including bulk metals, thereby relieving these difficulties. The repulsion is independent of surface losses and we propose an experiment to detect this force which consists of a core-shell nanoparticle, exhibiting a magnetic resonance, in close proximity to a gold substrate under plane wave illumination. We anticipate the use of this phenomenon in new nanomechanical devices.

Levitation of superconducting micro-rings for quantum magnetomechanics

Abstract:Levitation of superconductors is becoming an important building block in quantum technologies, particularly in the rising field of magnetomechanics. In most of the theoretical proposals and experiments, solid geometries such as spheres are considered for the levitator. Here we demonstrate that replacing them by superconducting rings brings two important advantages: Firstly, the forces acting on the ring remain comparable to those expected for solid objects, while the mass of the superconductor is greatly reduced. In turn, this reduction increases the achievable trap frequency. Secondly, the flux trapped in the ring by in-field cooling yields an additional degree of control for the system. We construct a general theoretical framework with which we obtain analytical formulations for a superconducting ring levitating in an anti-Helmholtz quadrupole field and a dipole field, for both zero-field and in-field cooling. The positions and the trapping frequencies of the levitated rings are analytically found as a function of the parameters of the system and the field applied during the cooling process. Unlike what is commonly observed in bulk superconductors, lateral and rotational stability are not granted for this idealized geometry. We therefore discuss the requirements for simple superconducting structures to achieve stability in all degrees of freedom.

Abstract:We explore the properties of a simple renormalizable shift-symmetric model with a higher-derivative kinetic energy and quartic-derivative coupling that can serve as a toy model for higher-derivative theories of gravity. The scattering amplitude behaves as in a normal effective field theory below the threshold for the production of ghosts, but has an unexpectedly soft behavior above the threshold. The physical running of the parameters is extracted from the two-point and four-point amplitudes. The results are compared to those obtained by other methods and are found to agree only in limiting cases. Abstract:Magnetism and magnetic levitation has found significant interest within the field of micromanipulation of objects. Additive manufacturing (AM), which is the computer-controlled process for creating 3D objects through the deposition of materials, has also been relevant within the academic environment. Despite the research conducted individually within the two fields, there has been minimal overlapping research. The non-contact nature of magnetic micromanipulator levitation systems makes it a prime candidate within AM environments. The feasibility of integrating magnetic micromanipulator levitation system, which includes two concentric coils embedded within a high permeability material and carrying currents in opposite directions, for additive manufacturing applications is presented in this article. The working principle, the optimization and relevant design decisions pertaining to the micromanipulator levitation system are discussed. The optimized dimensions of the system allow for 920 turns in the inner coil and 800 turns in the outer coil resulting in a Ninnercoil:Noutercoil ratio of 1.15. Use of principles of free levitation, which is production of levitation and restoration forces with the coils, to levitate non-magnetic conductive materials with compatibility and applications within the AM environment are discussed. The Magnetomotive Force (MMF) ratio of the coils are adjusted by incorporation of an resistor in parallel to the outer coil to facilitate sufficient levitation forces in the axial axis while producing satisfactory restoration forces in the lateral axes resulting in the levitation of an aluminum disc with a levitation height of 4.5 mm. An additional payload of up to 15.2 g (59% of mass of levitated disc) was added to a levitated aluminum disk of 26 g showing the system capability coping with payload variations, which is crucial in AM process to gradually deploy masses. The final envisioned system is expected to have positional stability within the tolerance range of a few μm. The system performance is verified through the use of simulations (ANSYS Maxwell) and experimental analyses. A novel method of using the ratio of conductivity (σ) of the material to density (ρ) of the material to determine the compatibility of the levitation ability of non-magnetic materials with magnetic levitation application is also formulated. The key advantage of this method is that it does not rely on experimental analyses to determine the levitation ability of materials.
