Abstract:In a recent paper, one of us posed three open problems concerning squarefree arithmetic progressions in infinite words. In this note we solve these problems and prove some additional results.

Abstract:A word is square-free if it does not contain a nonempty word of the form $XX$ as a factor. A famous 1906 result of Thue asserts that there exist arbitrarily long square-free words over a $3$-letter alphabet. We study square-free words with additional properties involving single-letter deletions and extensions of words. A square-free word is steady if it remains square-free after deletion of any single letter. We prove that there exist infinitely many steady words over a $4$-letter alphabet. We also demonstrate that one may construct steady words of any length by picking letters from arbitrary alphabets of size $7$ assigned to the positions of the constructed word. We conjecture that both bounds can be lowered to $4$, which is best possible. In the opposite direction, we consider square-free words that remain square-free after insertion of a single (suitably chosen) letter at every possible position in the word. We call them bifurcate. We prove a somewhat surprising fact, that over a fixed alphabet with at least three letters, every steady word is bifurcate. We also consider families of bifurcate words possessing a natural tree structure. In particular, we prove that there exists an infinite tree of doubly infinite bifurcate words over alphabet of size $12$.

Critical factorisation in square-free words

Abstract:A position $p$ in a word $w$ is critical if the minimal local period at $p$ is equal to the global period of $w$. According to the Critical Factorisation Theorem all words of length at least two have a critical point. We study the number $\eta(w)$ of critical points of square-free ternary words $w$, i.e., words over a three letter alphabet. We show that the sufficiently long square-free words $w$ satisfy $\eta(w) \le |w|-5$ where $|w|$ denotes the length of $w$. Moreover, the bound $|w|-5$ is reached by infinitely many words. On the other hand, every square-free word $w$ has at least $|w|/4$ critical points, and there is a sequence of these words closing to this bound.

A Note on Squares in Binary Words

Abstract:We consider words over a binary alphabet. A word $w$ is overlap-free if it does not have factors (blocks of consecutive letters) of the form $uvuvu$ for nonempty $u$. Let $M(w)$ denote the number of positions that are middle positions of squares in $w$. We show that for overlap-free binary words, $2M(w) \le |w|+3$, and that there are infinitely many overlap-free binary words for which $2M(w)=|w|+3$.

Abstract:The (bitwise) complement $\overline{x}$ of a binary word $x$ is obtained by changing each $0$ in $x$ to $1$ and vice versa. An $\textit{antisquare}$ is a nonempty word of the form $x\, \overline{x}$. In this paper, we study infinite binary words that do not contain arbitrarily large antisquares. For example, we show that the repetition threshold for the language of infinite binary words containing exactly two distinct antisquares is $(5+\sqrt{5})/2$. We also study repetition thresholds for related classes, where "two" in the previous sentence is replaced by a larger number. We say a binary word is $\textit{good}$ if the only antisquares it contains are $01$ and $10$. We characterize the minimal antisquares, that is, those words that are antisquares but all proper factors are good. We determine the growth rate of the number of good words of length $n$ and determine the repetition threshold between polynomial and exponential growth for the number of good words.

Lengths of extremal square-free ternary words

Abstract:A square-free word $w$ over a fixed alphabet $\Sigma$ is extremal if every word obtained from $w$ by inserting a single letter from $\Sigma$ (at any position) contains a square. Grytczuk et al. recently introduced the concept of extremal square-free word, and demonstrated that there are arbitrarily long extremal square-free ternary words. We find all lengths which admit an extremal square-free ternary word. In particular, we show that there is an extremal square-free ternary word of every sufficiently large length. We also solve the analogous problem for circular words.

Abstract:We solve a problem of Petrova, finalizing the classification of letter patterns avoidable by ternary square-free words; we show that there is a ternary square-free word avoiding letter pattern $xyzxzyx$. In fact, we: (1) characterize all the (two-way) infinite ternary square-free words avoiding letter pattern $xyzxzyx$ (2) characterize the lexicographically least (one-way) infinite ternary square-free word avoiding letter pattern $xyzxzyx$ (3) show that the number of ternary square-free words of length $n$ avoiding letter pattern $xyzxzyx$ grows exponentially with $n$.

Abstract:We consider words $w$ over the alphabet $\Sigma=\{0,1,2\}$. It is shown that there are irreducibly square-free words of all lengths $n$ except 4,5,7 and 12. Such a word is square-free (i.e., it has no repetitions $uu$ as factors), but by removing any one internal letter creates a square in the word.

Abstract:A square-free word is one which does not contain two consecutive occurrences of the same factor; a square-free morphism is one which produces a square-free word whenever applied to a square-free word. For testing square-freeness of a morphism, the previous researches (Berstel, Ehrenfeucht-Rozenberg, Crochemore, Hsiao et al., ...) dealt with the compactness claim: they proved that there is a bound (sometimes tight, depending on the morphism) such that a morphism is square-free if it is so on the words on the source alphabet of length up to this bound. In particular, when the morphism is ternary (the source alphabet of three letters) this bound is universally 5 and 5 is sharp on the target alphabet of 5 letters. In this paper we undertake a different approach: we do not search for any compactness bound or verify square-freeness excerpt for a few prerequisites; instead we define the relator on the source alphabet, the existence of which is relatively easy to verify by matching words for a common factor. As applications, we easily deduce all the previous bounds and we manifest the simplicity of performance by giving a short proof of a Lallement's result. More essentially, using it we show the optimum bound 5 for the ternary morphism on the alphabet of 4 letters and, by a more elaborate construction, on the alphabet of 3 letters. That gives the current problem the finishing touches.

Abstract:We obtain best possible results for the number of coprime positive integer solutions, along with some effectivity, of the equation in the title when $a$ is a positive integer, $b=p^{m}$ or $b=4p^{m}$ where $m$ is a non-negative integer, $p$ is prime and $x^{2}- \left( a^{2}+b \right) y^{2}=-4$ has an integer solution. We prove our results by bounding the number of distinct squares in certain binary recurrence sequences, including those associated with such equations.

Abstract:Word equations are a crucial element in the theoretical foundation of constraint solving over strings, which have received a lot of attention in recent years. A word equation relates two words over string variables and constants. Its solution amounts to a function mapping variables to constant strings that equate the left and right hand sides of the equation. While the problem of solving word equations is decidable, the decidability of the problem of solving a word equation with a length constraint (i.e., a constraint relating the lengths of words in the word equation) has remained a long-standing open problem. In this paper, we focus on the subclass of quadratic word equations, i.e., in which each variable occurs at most twice. We first show that the length abstractions of solutions to quadratic word equations are in general not Presburger-definable. We then describe a class of counter systems with Presburger transition relations which capture the length abstraction of a quadratic word equation with regular constraints. We provide an encoding of the effect of a simple loop of the counter systems in the theory of existential Presburger Arithmetic with divisibility (PAD). Since PAD is decidable, we get a decision procedure for quadratic words equations with length constraints for which the associated counter system is \emph{flat} (i.e., all nodes belong to at most one cycle). We show a decidability result (in fact, also an NP algorithm with a PAD oracle) for a recently proposed NP-complete fragment of word equations called regular-oriented word equations, together with length constraints. Decidability holds when the constraints are additionally extended with regular constraints with a 1-weak control structure.

On monochromatic arithmetic progressions in binary words associated with pattern sequences

Abstract:Let $e_v(n)$ denote the number of occurrences of a fixed pattern $v$ in the binary expansion of $n \in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper we study monochromatic arithmetic progressions in the class of binary words $(e_v(n) \bmod{2})_{n \geq 0}$, which includes the famous Thue--Morse word $\mathbf{t}$ and Rudin--Shapiro word $\mathbf{r}$. We prove that the length of a monochromatic arithmetic progression of difference $d \geq 3$ starting at $0$ in $\mathbf{r}$ is at most $(d+3)/2$, with equality for infinitely many $d$. Moreover, we compute the maximal length of a monochromatic arithmetic progression in $\mathbf{r}$ of difference $2^k-1$ and $2^k+1$. For a general pattern $v$ we provide an upper bound on the length of a monochromatic arithmetic progression of any difference $d$. We also prove other miscellaneous results and offer a number of related problems and conjectures.

Abstract:We obtain asymptotic formulas for sums of coefficients over arithmetic progressions of polynomials related to the Borwein conjectures. Let $a_i$ denote the coefficient of $q^i$ in the polynomial $\prod_{j=1}^n\prod_{k=1}^{p-1}(1-q^{pj-k})^s$, where $p$ is an odd prime, and $n, s$ are positive integers. In this note, we prove that $$\Big|\sum_{i=b \text{mod} 2pn}a_i-\frac{(p-1)p^{sn-1}}{2n}\Big|\leq p^{sn/2},$$ if $b$ is divisible by $p$, and $$\Big|\sum_{i=b \text{mod} 2pn}a_i+\frac{p^{sn-1}}{2n}\Big|\leq p^{sn/2},$$ if $b$ is not divisible by $p$. This improves a recent result of Goswami and Pantangi.

Abstract:A \emph{square} is a finite non-empty word consisting of two identical adjacent blocks. A word is \emph{square-free} if it does not contain a square as a factor. In any finite word one may delete the repeated block of a square, obtaining thereby a shorter word. By repeating this process, a square-free word is eventually reached, which we call a \emph{reduct} of the original word. How many different reducts a single word may have? It is not hard to prove that any binary word has exactly one reduct. We prove that there exist ternary words with arbitrarily many reducts. Moreover, the function counting the maximum number of reducts a ternary word of length $n$ may have grows exponentially. We also prove that over four letters, there exist words with any given number of reducts, which does not seem to be the case for ternary words. Finally, we demonstrate that the set of all finite ternary words splits into finitely many classes of \emph{related} words (one may get from one word to the other by a sequence of square reductions and factor duplications). A few open questions are posed concerning some structures on words defined with the use of the square reduction.

Square-free Word-representation of Word-representable Graphs

Abstract:A graph $G = (V, E)$ is word-representable, if there exists a word w over the alphabet V such that for letters ${x, y} \in V$ , $x$ and $y$ alternate in $w$ if and only if $xy \in E$. In this paper, we prove that any non-empty word-representable graph can be represented by a word containing no non-trivial squares. This result provides a positive answer to the open problem present in the book Words and graphs written by Sergey Kitaev, and Vadim Lozin. Also, we prove that for a word-representable graph $G$, if the representation number of $G$ is $k$, then every $k$-uniform word representing the graph $G$ is also square-free. Moreover, we prove that every minimal-length word representing a graph is square-free. Then, we count the number of possible square-free word-representations of a complete graph. At last, using the infinite square-free string generated from the Thue-Morse sequence, we prove that infinitely many square-free words represent a non-complete connected word-representable graph.

Abstract:Let $r_5(N)$ be the largest cardinality of a set in $\{1,\ldots,N\}$ which does not contain $5$ elements in arithmetic progression. Then there exists a constant $c\in (0,1)$ such that \[r_5(N)\ll \frac{N}{\exp((\log\log N)^{c})}.\] Our work is a consequence of recent improved bounds on the $U^4$-inverse theorem of the first author and the fact that $3$-step nilsequences may be approximated by locally cubic functions on shifted Bohr sets. This combined with the density increment strategy of Heath-Brown and Szemer{é}di, codified by Green and Tao, gives the desired result.
