Abstract:The problem of the electric field of a uniformly accelerating charge is a longstanding one that has led to several issues. We resolve these issues using techniques from linguistics, cognitive psychology, and the mathematics of partial differential equations.

Abstract:In light of a recent direct experimental confirmation of a Lorentz contraction of Coulomb field (an electric field of a point charge in a uniform motion), we revisit some common confusions related to it, to be mindful of in teaching the subject. These include the questions about a radial nature of the field, a role of the retardation effect due to a finite speed of information transfer and some issues related to a depiction of Coulomb field by means of the Lorentz contracted field lines.

Abstract:We find the electric field of a point charge in `truncated hyperbolic motion', in which the charge moves at a constant velocity followed by motion with a constant acceleration in its instantaneous rest frame. The same Lienard-Wiechert formula holds for the acceleration phase and the constant velocity phase of the charge's motion. The only modification is that the formula giving the retarded time is different for the two motions, and the acceleration is zero for the constant velocity motion. The electric field lines are continuous as the retarded time increases through the transition time between constant velocity and accelerated motion. As the transition time approaches negative infinity the electric field develops a delta function contribution that has been introduced by others as necessary to preserve Gauss's law for the electric field.

Abstract:The paradox of a field of a moving locked charge (confined in a closed space) is considered and solved with the use of the integral Maxwell equations. While known formulas obtained for instantaneous fields of charges moving along straight and curved lines are fully correct, measurable quantities are average electric and magnetic fields of locked charges. It is shown that the average electric field of locked charges does not depend on their motion. The average electric field of protons moving in nuclei coincides with that of protons being at rest and having the same spatial distribution of the charge density. The electric field of a twisted electron is equivalent to the field of a centroid with immobile charges which spatial distribution is defined by the wave function of the twisted electron.

Abstract:The wave function $\psi$ is interpreted as charge density, or charge distribution, at each point in space. This is a physical interpretation of $\psi$. The notion of speed can be associated with $\psi$, which leads to the concept of conduction currents and (displacement) convection currents. The charge distribution is the origin of electrical and mechanical sources, potentials and fields. The notion of self potential is essential for defining electrical or mechanical sources. Maxwell's equations are derived from the condition of charge conservation and mass conservation. There are two methods of modelling the mass of a charge: The mass of a charge is its electrostatic energy. The mass of a charge is the energy of the Zero Point Field (ZPF) that interacts with the point charge. It is shown that the two models are related by a simple energy equation for a particle at rest.

Abstract:As an integrative and insightful example for undergraduates learning about electrostatics, we discuss how to use symmetry, Coulomb's law, superposition, Gauss's law, and visualization to understand the electric field E(x,y,z) produced by a uniformly charged cubic shell. We first discuss how to deduce qualitatively, using freshman-level physics, the perhaps surprising fact that the interior electric field is nonzero and has a complex structure, pointing inwards from the middle of each face of the shell and pointing outwards towards each edge and corner. We then discuss how to understand the quantitative features of the electric field by plotting an analytical expression for E along symmetry lines and on symmetry surfaces of the shell.

Abstract:A laboratory experiment often performed in an introductory electricity and magnetism course involves the mapping of equipotential lines on a conductive sheet between two objects at different potentials. In this article, we describe how we have expanded this experiment so that it can be used to illustrate the electrostatic properties of conductors. Different configurations of electrodes can be used to show that the electric field is zero inside a conductor as well as within a cavity, the electric field is perpendicular to conducting surfaces, and the charge distribution on conducting surfaces can vary.

Abstract:It is known that Maxwell's electrodynamics—as usually understood at the present time—when applied to moving bodies, leads to asymmetries which do not appear to be inherent in the phenomena. Take, for example, the reciprocal electrodynamic action of a magnet and a conductor. The observable phenomenon here depends only on the relative motion of the conductor and the magnet, whereas the customary view draws a sharp distinction between the two cases in which either the one or the other of these bodies is in motion. For if the magnet is in motion and the conductor at rest, there arises in the neighbourhood of the magnet an electric field with a certain definite energy, producing a current at the places where parts of the conductor are situated. But if the magnet is stationary and the conductor in motion, no electric field arises in the neighbourhood of the magnet. In the conductor, however, we find an electromotive force, to which in itself there is no corresponding energy, but which gives rise—assuming equality of relative motion in the two cases discussed—to electric currents of the same path and intensity as those produced by the electric forces in the former case.

Abstract:The main object of the mathematical theory developed in this paper is the analysis of the propagation of electrical waves over a conductor represented in Fig. 3, § III, below. This conductor consists of a loop of wire Lx ■ • ■ Lk+X of length 21 in which there are, at equidistant points, the so-called reactance points, a certain number of equal coils interposed dividing the loop into a number of equal parts, called the interstices of the loop. These coils may have condensers in series with them or they may have secondary circuits with condensers. The propagation of electrical waves over a periodically loaded loop of this kind is compared with that over a uniform loop having the same total inductance, resistance, and capacity. This uniform loop is called the corresponding uniform conductor of the periodically loaded loop. A similar problem in mechanics is that of the forced and free vibrations of a periodically loaded heavy, flexible, inextensible string of finite length taking frictional resistances into account. To my knowledge, neither the electrical problem nor its corresponding mechanical problem has been investigated before. It will be observed in the course of this paper that a study of the propagation of electrical waves over a periodically loaded conductor of this kind suggests forcibly an electromagnetic theory of emission and absorption of light by molecular complexes, which on account of the physical conception underlying it, if for no other reason, possesses many attractive features. In this theory the ether and the material ions imbedded in it correspond to the uniform wire and the reactance points considered in this paper. These matters, however, are of a more or less speculative character and have, therefore, no place here. But it should be noted that the physical problem discussed here was first suggested by speculations of this kind. It can be stated as follows : Under what conditions will the non-uniform conductor represented in Fig. 3 be approximately equivalent to its corresponding uniform conductor ? Abstract:When exploring equations of nonlinear electrodynamics in effective medium formed by mutually parallel external electric and magnetic fields, we come to special static axial-symmetric solutions of two types. The first are comprised of fields referred to as electric and magnetic responses to a point-like electric charge when placed into the medium. In electric case, this is a field determined by the induced charge density. In magnetic case, this is a field carrying no magnetic charge and determined by an induced current. Fields of second type require presence of pseudoscalar constants for their existence. These are singular on the axis drawn along the external fields. In electric case this is a field of an inhomogeneously charged infinitely thin thread. In magnetic case this is the magnetic monopole with the Dirac string supported by solenoidal current. In both cases the necessary pseudoscalar constant is supplied by field derivatives of nonlinear Lagrangian taken on external fields. There is also a magnetic thread solution dual to electric thread with null total magnetic charge.

Abstract:A geometrical approach to calculate the electric field due to a uniformly charged rod is presented. The result is surprisingly simple and elegant. Using pure geometrical quantities like length and angle, the direction of the electric field in this charge configuration can be graphically defined. Understanding and application of this result can lead to a deeper appreciation of symmetry in a seemingly unsymmetric system.

Abstract:Maxwell's equations are formulated in arbitrary moving frames by means of tetrad fields, which are interpreted as reference frames adapted to observers in space-time. We assume the existence of a general distribution of charges and currents in an inertial frame. Tetrad fields are used to project the electromagnetic fields and sources on accelerated frames. The purpose is to study several configurations of fields and observers that in the literature are understood as paradoxes. For instance, are the two situations, (i) an accelerated charge in an inertial frame, and (ii) a charge at rest in an inertial frame described from the perspective of an accelerated frame, physically equivalent? Is the electromagnetic radiation the same in both frames? Normally in the analysis of these paradoxes the electromagnetic fields are transformed to (uniformly) accelerated frames by means of a coordinate transformation of the Faraday tensor. In the present approach coordinate and frame transformations are disentangled, and the electromagnetic field in the accelerated frame is obtained through a frame (local Lorentz) transformation. Consequently the fields in the inertial and accelerated frames are described in the same coordinate system. This feature allows the investigation of paradoxes such as the one mentioned above.

Abstract:In this paper we considered divergence of electric and of magnetic fields for four cases: classical point charge, classical continuous charge, relativistic point and relativistic continuous charges. Results for classical and relativistic point charges are the same as in literature, i.e. Gauss's law is valid. However results for time-varying classical and relativistic distributed charges indicate that divergence of electric field is not zero even for volumes of space where no charges are present. For these cases original Gauss's law might require modification. Divergence of electric field seems to be far-field type scalar anisotropic field, which is generated by time-varying electric charges or currents. Results indicate that for these effects to be sufficiently large to be experimentally observable the time variation of electric charges and/or of currents should be very fast. Divergence of magnetic field is zero for all cases.

Abstract:The fact that electromagnetic effects propagate at the speed of light suggests how the Lorenz-gauge scalar and vector potentials of a uniformly moving point charge must be modified when the charge was initially at rest and then set suddenly into uniform motion. The modified potentials are shown to satisfy the requisite inhomogeneous wave equations. The gauge function of the transformation of these potentials to the Coulomb gauge is calculated in closed form. It is validated by confirming that the Coulomb-gauge vector potential that is calculated using it yields together with the Coulomb-gauge scalar potential the same electric and magnetic fields as those calculated with the Lorenz-gauge potentials.

On the Problem of Defining Charge Operators for the Dirac Quantum Field

Abstract:It is well known how to define the operator $Q$ for the total charge (i.e., positron number minus electron number) on the standard Hilbert space of the second-quantized Dirac equation. Here we ask about operators $Q_A$ representing the charge content of a region $A\subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ in 3d physical space. There is a natural formula for $Q_A$ but, as we explain, there are difficulties about turning it into a mathematically precise definition. First, $Q_A$ can be written as a series but its convergence seems hopeless. Second, we show for some choices of $A$ that if $Q_A$ could be defined then its domain could not contain either the vacuum vector or any vector obtained from the vacuum by applying a polynomial in creation and annihilation operators. Both observations speak against the existence of $Q_A$ for generic $A$.

Abstract:In the self-sufficient potential formalism, treating all electromagnetic phenomena as natural or forced oscillations of some distributed electromagnetic oscillating system (Minkowski space-time), the electromagnetic potential must be considered as some relative measure describing deviation of the system from its "undisturbed" state (when both natural and forced oscillations are absent). Therefore, there is no ambiguity in the gauge of one: all components of the potential four-vector are asymptotically verging towards zero while the distance from all free charges and currents enlarges. Such interpretation turns the electromagnetic potential into a physically real value.

Abstract:We consider a certain extension of the Einstein's elevator thought experiment by assuming that the elevator is charged and falls into an electromagnetic field. We argue, on grounds of the Equivalence Principle, that an observer-dependent metric should exist, for which the geodesics coincide with the trajectories of the charged body in the electromagnetic field. We give a solution to this problem by finding such a metric and hence we are able to recover the Lorentz-force law. Recovery of the leading terms of the radiation reaction force is also possible with this approach.
