Abstract:We report on measurements of 11-18 cm wavelength radio emission from interactions of 15.2 MeV pulsed electron bunches at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. The electrons were observed both in a configuration where they produced primarily transition radiation from an aluminum foil, and in a configuration designed for the electrons to produce Cherenkov radiation in a silica sand target. Our aim was to emulate the large electron excess expected to develop during an electromagnetic cascade initiated by an ultra high-energy particle. Such charge asymmetries are predicted to produce strong coherent radio pulses, which are the basis for several experiments to detect high-energy neutrinos from the showers they induce in Antarctic ice and in the lunar regolith. We detected coherent emission which we attribute both to transition and possibly Cherenkov radiation at different levels depending on the experimental conditions. We discuss implications for experiments relying on radio emission for detection of electromagnetic cascades produced by ultra high-energy neutrinos.

Abstract:In my book "Algorithmic Information Theory" I explain how I constructed a million-character equation that proves that there is randomness in arithmetic. My book only includes a few pages from the monster equation, and omits the software used to construct it. This software has now been rewritten in Mathematica. The Mathematica software for my book, and its input, are here in their entirety. The Mathematica code is remarkably compact, but it sometimes is slow. So one C program plus equipment for automatically generating another is also included in this software package.

Abstract:We compare several approaches to the history of mathematics recently proposed by Blasjo, Fraser--Schroter, Fried, and others. We argue that tools from both mathematics and history are essential for a meaningful history of the discipline. In an extension of the Unguru-Weil controversy over the concept of geometric algebra, Michael Fried presents a case against both Andre Weil the "privileged observer" and Pierre de Fermat the "mathematical conqueror." We analyze Fried's version of Unguru's alleged polarity between a historian's and a mathematician's history. We identify some axioms of Friedian historiographic ideology, and propose a thought experiment to gauge its pertinence. Unguru and his disciples Corry, Fried, and Rowe have described Freudenthal, van der Waerden, and Weil as Platonists but provided no evidence; we provide evidence to the contrary. We analyze how the various historiographic approaches play themselves out in the study of the pioneers of mathematical analysis including Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, and Cauchy.

Abstract:The laws of chance are often subtle and deceptive. This is why games of chance work. People are convinced that they obey seemingly intuitive laws, while the underlying mathematical structure reveals a different and more complex reality. This article is a brief and rigorous journey through the implications that the mathematical laws governing stochastic processes have on gambling. It addresses a specific process, the random walk, and analyze some instances of fair and unfair games by highlighting the fallacy of many of our intuitions and beliefs. The paper gradually moves from the analysis of the random walk properties to a comprehensive description of the ruin problem. The introduction of the idea of transient and persistent states concludes the discussion. Much emphasis is placed on concrete examples and on the numerical values, in particular of the involved probabilities, and the interpretation of the results is always more central than the demonstrative technical details, which are nevertheless available to the reader.

Abstract:This is a report on the work of Robert Langlands, following his award of the Abel Prize in 2018. It includes his contributions to the general areas of Representation Theory, Automorphic Forms, Number Theory and Arithmetic Geometry. We have tried to communicate the remarkable continuity that runs throughout all of his work, with its roots in several fundamental areas of mathematics. What is now known as the Langlands Program represents a unification of some of the deepest parts of these areas. We hope that at least some parts of the report will be accessible to a broader mathematical audience. Other parts will inevitably be more difficult. However, we can also hope that the report is presented in such a way as to lead to a better understanding of all sides of Langlands' work.

Abstract:We define a notion of randomness for individual and collections of formal languages based on automatic martingales acting on sequences of words from some underlying domain. An automatic martingale bets if the incoming word belongs to the target language or not. Then randomness of both single languages and collections of languages is defined as a failure of automatic martingale to gain an unbounded capital by betting on the target language according to an incoming sequence of words, or a text. The randomness of formal languages turned out to be heavily dependent on the text. For very general classes of texts, any nonregular language happens to be random when considered individually. As for collections of languages, very general classes of texts permits nonrandomness of automatic families of languages only. On the other hand, an arbitrary computable language is be shown to be nonrandom under certain dynamic texts.

Abstract:Walter Richard Talbot was the fourth African American to earn a PhD in Mathematics. His doctoral degree is from the University of Pittsburgh in 1934 in geometric group theory. A contemporary research program was the determination of fundamental domains of finite group actions on complex vector spaces. His thesis is not widely available, and this note gives a brief synopsis of the main results of his thesis, expressed using modern mathematical methods and language, and placed in general context.

Abstract:Using a long-standing conjecture from combinatorial group theory, we explore, from multiple angles, the challenges of finding rare instances carrying disproportionately high rewards. Based on lessons learned in the mathematical context defined by the Andrews-Curtis conjecture, we propose algorithmic improvements that can be relevant in other domains with ultra-sparse reward problems. Although our case study can be formulated as a game, its shortest winning sequences are potentially $10^6$ or $10^9$ times longer than those encountered in chess. In the process of our study, we demonstrate that one of the potential counterexamples due to Akbulut and Kirby, whose status escaped direct mathematical methods for 39 years, is stably AC-trivial.

Abstract:Abstract The practice of mathematics involves discovering patterns and using these to formulate and prove conjectures, resulting in theorems. Since the 1960s, mathematicians have used computers to assist in the discovery of patterns and formulation of conjectures 1 , most famously in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture 2 , a Millennium Prize Problem 3 . Here we provide examples of new fundamental results in pure mathematics that have been discovered with the assistance of machine learning—demonstrating a method by which machine learning can aid mathematicians in discovering new conjectures and theorems. We propose a process of using machine learning to discover potential patterns and relations between mathematical objects, understanding them with attribution techniques and using these observations to guide intuition and propose conjectures. We outline this machine-learning-guided framework and demonstrate its successful application to current research questions in distinct areas of pure mathematics, in each case showing how it led to meaningful mathematical contributions on important open problems: a new connection between the algebraic and geometric structure of knots, and a candidate algorithm predicted by the combinatorial invariance conjecture for symmetric groups 4 . Our work may serve as a model for collaboration between the fields of mathematics and artificial intelligence (AI) that can achieve surprising results by leveraging the respective strengths of mathematicians and machine learning.

Abstract:Despite their spectacular progress, language models still struggle on complex reasoning tasks, such as advanced mathematics. We consider a long-standing open problem in mathematics: discovering a Lyapunov function that ensures the global stability of a dynamical system. This problem has no known general solution, and algorithmic solvers only exist for some small polynomial systems. We propose a new method for generating synthetic training samples from random solutions, and show that sequence-to-sequence transformers trained on such datasets perform better than algorithmic solvers and humans on polynomial systems, and can discover new Lyapunov functions for non-polynomial systems.
