Abstract:A series of direct numerical simulations of spanwise-rotating turbulent plane Couette flows at a Reynolds number of 1300 with rotation numbers Ro between 0 and 0.9 is carried out to investigate the effects of anticyclonic rotation on turbulent statistics and flow structures. Several typical turbulent statistics are presented, including the mean shear rate at the centerline, the wall-friction Reynolds number, and volume-averaged kinetic energies with respect to the secondary flowfield, turbulent field, and total fluctuation field. Our results show that the rotation changes these quantities in different manners. Volume-averaged balance equations for kinetic energy are analyzed and it turns out that the interaction term acts as a kinetic energy bridge that transfers energy from the secondary flow to the turbulent fluctuations. Several typical flow regimes are identified based on the correlation functions across the whole channel and flow visualizations. The two-dimensional roll cells are observed at weak rotation Ro = 0.01, where alternant clustering of vortices appears. Three-dimensional roll cells emerge around Ro approximate to 0.02, where the clustering of vortices shows the meandering and bifurcating behavior. For moderate rotation 0.07 less than or similar to Ro less than or similar to 0.36, well-organized structures are observed, where the herringbonelike vortices are clustered between streaks from the top view of three-dimensional flow visualization and form annuluses. More importantly, the vortices are rather confined to one side of the walls when Ro <= 0.02 and are inclined from the bottom to upper walls when Ro >= 0.07.

The Structure and Kinetic Ion Behavior of Low Mach Number Shocks

Abstract:Low Mach number collisionless shocks are routinely observed in the solar wind and upstream of planetary bodies. However, most in situ observations have lacked the necessary temporal resolution to directly study the kinetic behavior of ions across these shocks. We investigate a series of five low Mach number bow shock crossings observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. The five shocks had comparable Mach numbers, but varying shock-normal angles ($66^{\circ} \lesssim \theta_{Bn} \lesssim 89^{\circ}$) and ramp widths ($5~\mathrm{km} \lesssim l \lesssim 100~\mathrm{km}$). The shock width is shown to be crucial in determining the fraction of protons reflected and energized by the shock, with proton reflection increasing with decreasing shock width. As the shock width increases proton reflection is arrested entirely. For nearly perpendicular shocks, reflected protons exhibit quasi-periodic structures, which persist far downstream of the shock. As the shock-normal angle becomes more oblique these periodic proton structures broaden to form an energetic halo population. Periodic fluctuations in the magnetic field downstream of the shocks are generated by fluctuations in dynamic pressure of alpha particles, which are decelerated by the cross-shock potential and subsequently undergo gyrophase bunching. These results demonstrate that complex kinetic-scale ion dynamics occur in low Mach number shocks, which depend significantly on the shock profile.

Abstract:The nature of the magnetic structure arising from ion specular reflection in shock compression studies is examined by means of 1d particle in cell simulations. Propagation speed, field profiles and supporting currents for this magnetic structure are shown to be consistent with a magnetosonic soliton. Coincidentally, this structure and its evolution are typical of foot structures observed in perpendicular shock reformation. To reconcile these two observations, we propose, for the first time, that shock reformation can be explained as the result of the formation, growth and subsequent transition to a super-critical shock of a magnetosonic soliton. This argument is further supported by the remarkable agreement found between the period of the soliton evolution cycle and classical reformation results. This new result suggests that the unique properties of solitons can be used to shed new light on the long-standing issue of shock non-stationarity and its role on particle acceleration.

Abstract:Measurements of solar wind turbulence reveal the ubiquity of discontinuities. In this study we investigate how the discontinuities, especially rotational discontinuities (RDs), are formed in MHD turbulence. In a simulation of the decaying compressive three-dimensional (3D) MHD turbulence with an imposed uniform background magnetic field, we detect RDs with sharp field rotations and little variations of magnetic field intensity, as well as mass density. At the same time, in the de Hoffman-Teller frame, the plasma velocity is nearly in agreement with the Alfven speed, and is field-aligned on both sides of the discontinuity. We take one of the identified RDs to analyze its 3D structure and temporal evolution in detail. By checking the magnetic field and plasma parameters, we find that the identified RD evolves from the steepening of the Alfven wave with moderate amplitude, and that steepening is caused by the nonuniformity of the Alfven speed in the ambient turbulence.

Abstract:Collisionless shock waves are one of the main forms of energy conversion in space plasmas. They can directly or indirectly drive other universal plasma processes such as magnetic reconnection, turbulence, particle acceleration and wave phenomena. Collisionless shocks employ a myriad of kinetic plasma mechanisms to convert the kinetic energy of supersonic flows in space to other forms of energy (e.g., thermal plasma, energetic particles, or Poynting flux) in order for the flow to pass an immovable obstacle. The partitioning of energy downstream of collisionless shocks is not well understood, nor are the processes which perform energy conversion. While we, as the heliophysics community, have collected an abundance of observations of the terrestrial bow shock, instrument and mission-level limitations have made it impossible to quantify this partition, to establish the physics within the shock layer responsible for it, and to understand its dependence on upstream conditions. This paper stresses the need for the first ever spacecraft mission specifically designed and dedicated to the observation of both the terrestrial bow shock as well as Interplanetary shocks in the solar wind.

The rotational disruption of porous dust aggregates from ab-initio kinematic calculations

Abstract:Context: The sizes of dust in the interstellar medium follows a distribution where most of the dust mass is in smaller grains. However, the re-distribution from larger grains towards smaller sizes especially by means of rotational disruption is poorly understood. Aims: We aim to study the dynamics of porous grain aggregates under accelerated ration. Especially, we determine the deformation of the grains and the maximal angular velocity up to the rotational disruption event by caused by centrifugal forces. Methods: We pre-calculate aggregates my means of ballistic aggregation analogous to the interstellar dust as input for subsequent numerical simulations. In detail, we perform three-dimensional N-body simulations mimicking the radiative torque spin-up process up to the point where the grain aggregates become rotationally disrupted. Results: Our simulations results are in agreement with theoretical models predicting a characteristic angular velocity $\omega_{\mathrm{disr}}$ of the order of ${ 10^8 - 10^9\ \mathrm{rad\ s^{-1}} }$, where grains become rotationally disrupted. In contrast to theoretical predictions, we show that for large porous aggregates ($< 300\ \mathrm{nm}$) $\omega_{\mathrm{disr}}$ reaches a lower asymptotic value. Hence, such grains can withstand an accelerated ration more efficiently up to a factor of 10 because the displacement of mass by centrifugal forces and the subsequent mechanical deformation supports the buildup of new connections within the aggregate. Furthermore, we report that the rapid rotation of grains deforms an ensemble with initially 50:50 prolate and oblate shapes, respectively, preferentially into oblate shapes. Finally, we present a best fit formula to predict the average rotational disruption of an ensemble of porous dust aggregates dependent on internal grain structure, total number of monomers, and applied material properties.

Abstract:Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities are investigated in a computationally tractable two-dimensional model of the solar tachocline. The model's differential rotation yields stability in the absence of a magnetic field, but if a magnetic field is present, a joint instability is observed. We analyze the nonlinear development of the instability via fully nonlinear direct numerical simulation, the generalized quasilinear approximation (GQL), and direct statistical simulation (DSS) based upon low-order expansion in equal-time cumulants. As the magnetic diffusivity is decreased, the nonlinear development of the instability becomes more complicated until eventually a set of parameters are identified that produce a previously unidentified long-term cycle in which energy is transformed from kinetic energy to magnetic energy and back. We find that the periodic transitions, which mimic some aspects of solar variability -- for example, the quasiperiodic seasonal exchange of energy between toroidal field and waves or eddies -- are unable to be reproduced when eddy-scattering processes are excluded from the model.

Abstract:Using multipoint Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations in an unusual string-of-pearls configuration, we examine in detail observations of the reformation of a fast magnetosonic shock observed on the upstream edge of a foreshock transient structure upstream of Earth's bow shock. The four MMS spacecraft were separated by several hundred km, comparable to suprathermal ion gyro-radius scales or several ion inertial lengths. At least half of the shock reformation cycle was observed, with a new shock ramp rising up out of the "foot" region of the original shock ramp. Using the multipoint observations, we convert the observed time-series data into distance along the shock normal in the shock's rest frame. That conversion allows for a unique study of the relative spatial scales of the shock's various features, including the shock's growth rate, and how they evolve during the reformation cycle. Analysis indicates that: the growth rate increases during reformation, electron-scale physics play an important role in the shock reformation, and energy conversion processes also undergo the same cyclical periodicity as reformation. Strong, thin electron-kinetic-scale current sheets and large-amplitude electrostatic and electromagnetic waves are reported. Results highlight the critical cross-scale coupling between electron-kinetic- and ion-kinetic-scale processes and details of the nature of nonstationarity, shock-front reformation at collisionless, fast magnetosonic shocks.

Abstract:MHD discontinuities are ubiquitous in the solar wind and are often found at the origin of turbulence intermittency. They may also play a key role in the turbulence dissipation and heating of the solar wind. The tangential discontinuities (TDs) and rotational discontinuities (RDs) are the two most important types of discontinuities. Recently, the connection between turbulence intermittency and proton thermodynamics has been observationally investigated. Here, we present numerical results from a three-dimensional MHD simulation with pressure anisotropy and we define new methods for identifying and distinguishing TDs and RDs. Three statistical results obtained for the relative occurrence rates and heating effects are highlighted: (1) RDs tend to take up the majority of the discontinuities along with time; (2) the thermal states embedding TDs tend to be associated with extreme plasma parameters or instabilities while RDs do not; (3) TDs have a higher average T as well as perpendicular temperature T.. The simulation shows that TDs and RDs evolve and contribute to solar wind heating differently. These results will improve our understanding of the mechanisms that generate discontinuities and cause plasma heating.
A kinetic approach to studying low-frequency molecular fluctuations in a one-dimensional shock

Abstract:Low-frequency molecular fluctuations in the translational nonequilibrium zone of one-dimensional strong shock waves are characterized for the first time in a kinetic collisional framework in the Mach number range 2≤M≤10. Our analysis draws upon the well-known bimodal nature of the probability density function (PDF) of gas particles in the shock, as opposed to their Maxwellian distribution in the freestream, the latter exhibiting two orders of magnitude higher dominant frequencies than the former. Inside the (finite-thickness) shock region, the strong correlation between perturbations in the bimodal PDF and fluctuations in the normal stress suggests introducing a novel two-bin model to describe the reduced-order dynamics of a large number of collision interactions of gas particles. Our model correctly predicts two orders of magnitude differences in fluctuation frequencies in the shock vs those in the freestream and is consistent with the small-amplitude fluctuations obtained from the highly resolved direct simulation Monte Carlo computations of the same configuration. The variation of low-frequency fluctuations with changes in the conditions upstream of the shock revealed that these fluctuations can be described by a Strouhal number, based on the bulk velocity upstream of the shock and the shock-thickness based on the maximum density gradient inside the shock, that remains practically independent of Mach number in the range examined.

Towards understanding the physics of collisionless relativistic shocks

Abstract:Relativistic astrophysical collisionless shocks represent outstanding dissipation agents of the huge power of relativistic outflows produced by accreting black holes, core collapsed supernovae and other objects into multi-messenger radiation (cosmic rays, neutrinos, electromagnetic radiation). This article provides a theoretical discussion of the fundamental physical ingredients of these extreme phenomena. In the context of weakly magnetized shocks, in particular, it is shown how the filamentation type instabilities, which develop in the precursor of pair dominated or electron-ion shocks, provide the seeds for the scattering of high energy particles as well as the agent which preheats and slows down the incoming precursor plasma. This analytical discussion is completed with a mesoscopic, non-linear model of particle acceleration in relativistic shocks based on Monte Carlo techniques. This Monte Carlo model uses a semi-phenomenological description of particle scattering which allows it to calculate the back-reaction of accelerated particles on the shock structure on length and momentum scales which are currently beyond the range of microscopic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations.

Abstract:The problem of collisionless shocks is posed as the problem of understanding how in a completely collisionless streaming high-temperature plasma shocks can develop at all, forming discontinuous transition layers of thickness much less than any collisional mean free path length. The history of shock research is briefly reviewed. It is expressed that collisionless shocks as a realistic possibility of a state of matter have been realized not earlier than roughly half a centruy ago. The basic properties of collisionless shocks are noted in preparing the theory of collisionless shocks and a classification of shocks is given in terms of their physical properties, which is developed in the following chapters. The structure of this chapter is as follows: 1. A cursory historical overview, describing the early history, gasdynamic shocks, the realisation of the existence of collisionless shocks and their investigation over three decades in theory and observation until the numerical simulation age, 2. Posing the shock problem as the question: When are shocks? 3. Abstract:Collisionless shocks occur in various fields of physics. In the context of space and astrophysics they have been investigated for many decades. However, a thorough understanding of shock formation and particle acceleration is still missing. Collisionless shocks can be distinguished into electromagnetic and electrostatic shocks. Electromagnetic shocks are of importance mainly in astrophysical environments and they are mediated by the Weibel or filamentation instability. In such shocks, charged particles gain energy by diffusive shock acceleration. Electrostatic shocks are characterized by a strong electrostatic field, which leads to electron trapping. Ions are accelerated by reflection from the electrostatic potential. Shock formation and particle acceleration will be discussed in theory and simulations.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Head-on giant impacts (collisions between planet-sized bodies) are frequently used to study the planet formation process as they present an extreme configuration where the two colliding bodies are greatly disturbed. With limited computing resources, focusing on these extreme impacts eases the burden of exploring a large parameter space. Results from head-on impacts are often then extended to study oblique impacts with angle corrections or used as initial conditions for other calculations, for example, the evolution of ejected debris. In this study, we conduct a detailed investigation of the thermodynamic and energy budget evolution of high-energy head-on giant impacts, entering the catastrophic impacts regime, for target masses between 0.001 and 12 M$_{{\oplus }}$. We demonstrate the complex interplay of gravitational forces, shock dynamics, and thermodynamic processing in head-on impacts at high energy. Our study illustrates that frequent interactions of core material with the liquid side of the vapour curve could have cumulative effects on the post-collision remnants, leading to fragmentary disintegration occurring at lower impact energy. This results in the mass of the largest remnant diverging significantly from previously developed scaling laws. These findings suggest two key considerations: (1) head-on planetary collisions for different target masses do not behave similarly, so caution is needed when applying scaling laws across a broad parameter space; and (2) an accurate model of the liquid-vapour phase boundary is essential for modelling giant impacts. Our findings highlight the need for careful consideration of impact configurations in planetary formation studies, as head-on impacts involve a complex interplay between thermodynamic processing, shocks, gravitational forces, and other factors.
