Abstract:BACKGROUND Neurology is rapidly evolving as a result of continuous diagnostic and therapeutic progress, which influences the daily work of neurologists. Therefore, updating residency training programmes is crucial for the future of neurology. Several countries are currently discussing and/or modifying the structure of their neurology residency training programme. A detailed and up-to-date overview of the available European residency training programmes will aid this process. METHODS A questionnaire addressing numerous aspects of residency training programmes in neurology was distributed among 38 national representatives of the Resident and Research Fellow Section of the European Academy of Neurology. RESULTS We obtained data from 32 European countries, response rate 84%. The median (range) duration of the residency training programmes was 60 (12-72) months. In the majority of countries, rotations to other medical disciplines were mandatory, mostly psychiatry (69%), internal medicine (66%) and neurosurgery (59%). However, the choice of medical fields and the duration of rotations varied substantially between countries. In 50% of countries, there are formal regulations regarding training in evidence-based medicine, teaching skills and/or leadership qualities. In many countries (75%), residents have to take an exam. CONCLUSIONS We found substantial variation among European countries in the duration of residency training programmes, and especially in the choice of obligatory rotations to external medical disciplines. Despite a presumably similar spectrum of patients, neurology residency training programmes across Europe are not harmonised. The structure of the programme should be determined by its relevance for neurologists today and in the future.

Abstract:WHO Member States adopted the Global Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel 10 years ago. This study assesses adherence with the Code's principles and its continuing relevance in the WHO Europe region with regards to international recruitment of health workers. Data from the joint OECD/EUROSTAT/WHO-Europe questionnaire from 2010 to 2018 are analyzed to determine trends in intra- and inter-regional mobility of foreign-trained doctors and nurses working in case study destination countries in Europe. In 2018, foreign-trained doctors and nurses comprised over a quarter of the physician workforce and 5% of the nursing workforce in five of eight and four of five case study countries, respectively. Since 2010, the proportion of foreign-trained nurses and doctors has risen faster than domestically trained professionals, with increased mobility driven by rising East-West and South-North intra-European migration, especially within the European Union. The number of nurses trained in developing countries but practising in case study countries declined by 26%. Although the number of doctors increased by 27%, this was driven by arrivals from countries experiencing conflict and volatility, suggesting countries generally are increasingly adhering to the Code's principles on ethical recruitment. To support ethical recruitment practices and sustainable workforce development in the region, data collection and monitoring on health worker mobility should be improved.
Migration intentions among physicians working in Polish hospitals - Insights from survey research

Abstract:Background: Health workforce shortages could lead to burnout, excessive workload, dissatisfaction and consequently to migration. In Poland the exact scale of physician migration is unknown due to insufficient data. Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional survey of physicians working in Polish hospitals was conducted between March and June 2018. 15 Polish hospitals were included in the study (7 general, 5 specialist, 3 university). The data was gathered via an on-line, self-administered questionnaire, sent to physicians working in the included hospitals. Associations between the intention to migrate and demographic characteristics as well as work-related variables and overall satisfaction were measured. Simple and multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine significant predictors of migration. Results: 1003 questionnaires were analyzed (response rate: 38%). 273 doctors declared the intention to migrate: 4.5% answering 'definitely yes' and 22.7% 'probably yes'. The main reasons were: higher earnings, better working conditions and better work-life balance abroad. Age and higher career satisfaction were negatively related to the intention to migrate: OR = 0.94 (95% CI 0,92-0,95) and OR = 0.44 (95% CI 0.34-0.56) respectively. Women were 54% less likely to intend to migrate than men (OR = 0.46, 95% CI 0.33-0.65). Almost 62% of physicians intending to migrate considered a temporary stay abroad. Conclusions: Special attention should be paid to improving working conditions, including salary, but also reducing bureaucracy, improvement of work-climate and training opportunities.
Immigration of highly skilled European professionals to Germany: intra-EU brain gain or brain circulation?

Abstract:This contribution aims to highlight the relevance of the concept of brain gain for intra-EU migration. For this purpose, I contrast brain gain and brain circulation as the two poles of a scale, aiming to explain disparities in the migration strategies of highly skilled intra-EU migrants that are related to their countries of origin. I apply this conceptualisation in the analysis of an original representative survey of non-German EU physicians working in Germany – one of the favourite EU destination countries of physicians. Intra-EU migrants working in the medical profession constitute a relevant case study, as this profession is the most mobile highly skilled profession within the EU and is characterised by an acute EU labour shortage. The analysis of the original migration motives and intended length of stay in Germany of the EU physicians surveyed confirms the relevance of the brain gain and brain circulation framework for understanding disparities related to the countries of origin in the migration patterns of highly skilled intra-EU migrants. Indeed, differences related to the EU physicians’ regions of origin in respect of the importance of economic migration reasons and the intention to immigrate on a permanent basis correlate with the magnitude of the economic differentials between Germany and the regions of origin.

Abstract:Background: Neurosurgery, an intricate and dynamic surgical specialty, faces challenges in attracting medical graduates. Despite its potential appeal, a decreasing trend in medical students opting for surgical specialties, including neurosurgery, is noted. This study aims to assess European medical students' perceptions of neurosurgery, focusing on South-East Europe, and address concerns about the declining interest in this field. Methods: A comprehensive digital survey, comprising 33 questions, was distributed to 1115 medical students across 17 European countries. The survey, conducted over 9 months, gathered responses through European neurosurgical societies, the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), and university channels. Statistical analysis utilized IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, presenting data through counts, proportions, and χ2 tests. Results: The study reveals that, over the survey period, 834 medical students completed the questionnaire, with a predominant representation from South-East Europe. While 43.2% of participants were considering a surgical career, neurosurgery emerged as the most preferred specialty (26.37%). Despite this interest, 80.2% reported insufficient knowledge about pursuing a neurosurgical career, with limited exposure during medical education. Concerns about work-life balance, heavy workload, and hierarchical structures were prominent among respondents. Conclusions: The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to address concerns influencing medical students' decisions regarding neurosurgery. Improving neurosurgical education, dispelling misconceptions, and creating a supportive work environment are crucial steps to attract and retain diverse talented individuals in neurosurgery. These efforts will be vital in narrowing the gap between the demand for neurosurgeons and the number of medical graduates entering the field, ensuring a sustainable future for this essential surgical specialty.
A cycle of brain gain, waste and drain - a qualitative study of non-EU migrant doctors in Ireland

Abstract:Background: Ireland is heavily reliant on non-EU migrant health workers to staff its health system. Shortages of locally trained health workers and policies which facilitate health worker migration have contributed to this trend. This paper provides insight into the experiences of non-EU migrant doctors in the Irish health workforce. Method: In-depth interviews were conducted with 37 non-EU migrant doctors in Ireland in 2011/2012. Results: Respondents believed they had been recruited to fill junior hospital doctor 'service' posts. These posts are unpopular with locally trained doctors due to the limited career progression they provide. Respondents felt that their hopes for career progression and postgraduate training in Ireland had gone unrealised and that they were becoming de-skilled. As a result, most respondents were actively considering onward migration from Ireland. Discussion & conclusions: Failure to align the expectations of non-EU migrant doctors with the requirements of the health system has resulted in considerable frustration and a cycle of brain gain, waste and drain. The underlying reasons for high mobility into and out of the Irish medical workforce must be addressed if this cycle is to be broken. The heavy reliance on non-EU migrant doctors to staff the medical workforce has distracted from the underlying workforce challenges facing the Irish medical workforce.
Assessment of HIV-positive in-patients using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Johannesburg

Abstract:The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) short-version checklist was used to assess the impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions experienced by a sample of HIV-positive in-patients admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. Laboratory tests, observation and review of patients' medical records were used to complete the ICF Checklist. Eighty patients were assessed (23 males and 57 females). Common impairments related to the following functions: digestive, metabolic and endocrine systems (83.9%); sensory (83.5%); haematological, immunological and respiratory systems (82.5%); neuromusculoskeletal movement (73.8%); mental (72.6%); energy and drive (75%); sleep (71%); emotional (62%); and muscle power (75%). Activity limitations were present in the area of mobility (56.4%), major life areas (55.1%), and community, social and civic life (50%). Associations found among impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions were that patients with sensory problems were five-times more likely to have problems in self-care than people without sensory problems. Patients with impairments in the digestive, genitourinary and neuromusculoskeletal systems experienced problems with general tasks (confidence interval [CI]: 4.05–103.03; p < 0.01). Patients with cardiovascular, haematological, immunological and respiratory system problems were 14-times more likely to have problems with execution of general tasks (odds ratio [OR] 14.06, CI: 2.75–71.94; p = 0.002). Activities of participation restriction, difficulties with general tasks and demands (OR 9.68, CI: 1.20–77.92), interpersonal relationships (OR 3.62, CI: 1.09–12.00), domestic life (OR 3.97, CI: 1.12–14.16), and community, social and civic life (OR 4.13, CI: 1.05–16.20) were closely associated with barriers in obtaining products for personal use and using technology. Understanding the prevalence and associations of disability and function in the course of HIV disease may serve as a baseline for developing appropriate and context-sensitive rehabilitation interventions and management strategies for people living with HIV or AIDS.

Abstract:The phenomenon of migration among medical personnel from less developed countries is a large one, with negative effects on the origin country, but more worrying is graduates' propensity to migrate during or immediately after university studies. The analysis of the labor market in the health sector from the last two decades shows us greater attractiveness of employment in (more) economically developed states compared to the demand from the health sector in graduates' origin countries. This research's purpose is to identify the determinants of the propensity to study and work abroad of medical students as a defined factor for better employment, and to identify the push factors in the origin country. As a result of the dichotomous nature of the dependent variables, logistic regression was applied. The independent variables (gender, residence, medical specialization, grades and perceived economic status) were used to identify the odds of the intention to migrate for studies. The results highlighted a higher propensity to migrate for studies among medical students, with opportunities offered by universities differing across countries and geographical areas. Moreover, students with a lower level of household income have openness to migrate, the tuition fees being managed through part-time/temporary employment during studies.

Abstract:Objective Providing a general overview of the European Union's health workforce mobility under the challenges facing health systems regarding the supply of health workers. Method We use a descriptive method , based on the analysis of secondary data, qualitative and quantitative, concerning the European Semester from the European Union, complemented with statistical data from both the Union and some international organisations. Results The mobility of health professionals in the Union, associated to strong reliance on recruiting abroad and shortages due to emigration, was identified as a challenge in the European Semester process in a significant number of times during 2017-2023. The pandemic aggravated pre-existing shortages and the need to strike a balance between maintaining the resolution capacity of health systems while abiding by the free movement of health professionals. The information shows that Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Lithuania, Latvia, Portugal, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, and Slovenia could be flagged with an "issuer profile". Luxembourg, Ireland, Malta, and Sweden could be flagged with a "recipient profile". We benefited from improvements in the information system concerning the Union's health workforce. Further advances regarding the harmonisation of health professions' definition are needed, especially for nurses. Conclusions The European Union faces internal migrations of health professionals. Mobility is used as a solution to shortages. The pandemic aggravated pre-existing shortages bringing to the forefront the need to strike a balance between health objectives and internal market objectives. Member States are immersed in health reforms, some financed with European Funds. Promoting health workforce planning and forecasting would emerge as a necessary action, including improving harmonised information. Drawing in a systematic way on the available information from the European Semester reports may provide some clues to give answers to policymaking concerning health professionals' mobility. Resumen Objetivo Proporcionar una visión general de la movilidad del personal sanitario de la Unión Europea ante los desafíos a los que se enfrentan los sistemas sanitarios relacionados con la oferta de profesionales. Método Utilizamos un método de investigación descriptivo, basado en el análisis de información secundaria, cualitativa y cuantitativa, relativa al Semestre Europeo de la Unión Europea, complementada con datos estadísticos tanto de la Unión Europea como de algunas organizaciones internacionales. Resultados La movilidad de los profesionales sanitarios en la Unión Europea, asociada a problemas de fuerte dependencia de la contratación de profesionales extranjeros y escasez debido a la emigración, se identificó como un desafío en el proceso del Semestre Europeo en un número significativo de veces durante el periodo 2017-2023. La pandemia agravó la escasez preexistente, enfatizando la necesidad de lograr un equilibrio entre mantener la capacidad resolutiva de los sistemas sanitarios y respetar al mismo tiempo la libre circulación de los profesionales sanitarios. Female Neurosurgeons in Europe-On a Prevailing Glass Ceiling

Abstract:Background: Almost one half of currently practicing physicians in Europe are women. Despite advances in access to training positions and the entry of women into neurosurgery, it has remained a male-dominated field, with an underrepresentation of female leaders. We designed a 2-part study to better understand the current situation of European female neurosurgeons. Methods: The European Association of Neurosurgical Societies and its member societies were analyzed for female participation in leadership positions. Additionally, an online survey was designed, containing 33 questions about career choice, mentorship, family planning, and perceived obstacles, for women in neurosurgery. Results: A total of 116 responses were received. Most female neurosurgeons lacked same-gender role models (76%), although most reported that having a female mentor would be important (58%). An overwhelming majority (86%) believe family planning takes on a more important role for women, and 72% reported worrying their career prospects could be negatively affected by their desire to have children. The greatest obstacle perceived was the prevailing inequality in opportunities (30%) and attaining leadership positions (24%). Most (81%) reported that women have different concerns regarding their career from men, and 72% also reported feeling at a disadvantage as a woman. Most (66%) also believe should be a "Women in Neurosurgery" committee within the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. Conclusions: Unfortunately, a gender gap still exists in European neurosurgery. The extent thereof has not yet been systematically analyzed. Our project offers a glimpse into the inequalities and obstacles women perceive in our field; however, more comprehensive data are required.

Abstract:Aim: Germany's growing shortage of doctors is a current topic of numerous discussions in healthcare policy. The objective of this study is to show the medical supply situation and migratory movement of doctors in the outpatient and inpatient physician care sector, with particular emphasis on the immigration of foreign doctors to Germany and its consequences. Subjects and methods: The annual statistical reports from the Bavarian Medical Association and the Federal Medical Association were investigated with regard to foreign doctors and migratory movements. To establish Bavaria's situation regarding outpatient physician care, unpublished case reports and planning sheets of the Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Bavaria (KVB) were analysed. A survey amongst Bavarian hospitals shows the current situation of the inpatient care sector. Results: The trend of emigration by German doctors continues unabated, especially to Switzerland, UK, USA and Austria. In Bavaria, outpatient care by GPs or specialists is still standard or in oversupply. However, the survey was able to confirm a considerable lack of doctors for inpatient care. So far, it has been possible to compensate existing staff shortages in hospitals by employing foreign doctors, despite significant language deficits. Discussion and conclusions: To resolve the shortage of doctors in future, a reform of the Medical Requirements Planning in combination with structural improvements and measures to integrate immigrant doctors is essential.
Passing through - reasons why migrant doctors in Ireland plan to stay, return home or migrate onwards to new destination countries

Abstract:Background: International recruitment is a common strategy used by high-income countries to meet their medical workforce needs. Ireland, despite training sufficient doctors to meet its internal demand, continues to be heavily dependent on foreign-trained doctors, many of whom may migrate onwards to new destination countries. A cross-sectional study was conducted to measure and analyse the factors associated with the migratory intentions of foreign doctors in Ireland. Methods: A total of 366 non-European nationals registered as medical doctors in Ireland completed an online survey assessing their reasons for migrating to Ireland, their experiences whilst working and living in Ireland, and their future plans. Factors associated with future plans - whether to remain in Ireland, return home or migrate to a new destination country - were tested by bivariate and multivariate analyses, including discriminant analysis. Results: Of the 345 foreign doctors who responded to the question regarding their future plans, 16 % of whom were Irish-trained, 30 % planned to remain in Ireland, 23 % planned to return home and 47 % to migrate onwards. Country of origin, personal and professional reasons for migrating, experiences of training and supervision, opportunities for career progression, type of employment contract, citizenship status, and satisfaction with life in Ireland were all factors statistically significantly associated with the three migratory outcomes. Conclusion: Reported plans may not result in enacted emigration. However, the findings support a growing body of evidence highlighting dissatisfaction with current career opportunities, contributing to the emigration of Irish doctors and onward migration of foreign doctors. Implementation of the WHO Global Code, which requires member states to train and retain their own health workforce, could also help reduce onward migration of foreign doctors to new destination countries. Ireland has initiated the provision of tailored postgraduate training to doctors from Pakistan, enabling these doctors to return home with improved skills of benefit to the source country.
The layered crisis of the primary care medical workforce in the European region: what evidence do we need to identify causes and solutions?

Abstract:Primary care services are key to population health and for the efficient and equitable organisation of national health systems. This is why they are often financed through public funds. Primary care doctors are instrumental for the delivery of preventive services, continuity of care, and for the referral of patients through the system. These cadres are also the single largest health expenditure at the core of such services. Although recruitment and retention of primary care doctors have always been challenging, shortages are now exacerbated by higher demand for services from aging populations, increased burden of chronic diseases, backlogs from the COVID-19 pandemic, and patient expectations. At the same time, the supply of primary care physicians is constrained by rising retirement rates, internal and external migration, worsening working conditions, budget cuts, and increased burnout. Misalignment between national education sectors and labour markets is becoming apparent, compounding staff shortages and maldistribution. With their predominantly publicly funded health systems and in the aftermath of COVID-19, countries of the European region appear to be now on the cusp of a multi-layered, slow-burning primary care crisis, with almost every country reporting long waiting lists for doctor appointments, shortages of physicians, unfilled vacancies, and consequently, added pressures on hospitals' Accident and Emergency services. This articles collection aims at pulling together the evidence from countries of the European Region on root causes of such workforce crisis, impacts, and effectiveness of existing policies to mitigate it. Original research is needed, offering analysis and fresh insights into the primary care medical workforce crisis in wider Europe. Ultimately, the aim of this articles collection is to provide an evidence basis for the identification of policy solutions to present and future primary health care crises in high as well as lower-income countries.

Abstract:BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) plays an important role in cell proliferation of a variety of cell types. The authors had previously found that dexamethasone (Dex), a synthetical glucocorticoid, can markedly inhibit the proliferation of a human ovarian cancer cell line HO-8910. This study was designed to observe the effect of Dex on the activation of ERK1/2 in HO-8910 cells in order to explore the signal transduction pathway that mediates the anti-proliferation effect of Dex on these cells. METHODS The activation of ERK1/2 was determined by Western blot analysis, and changes of cell proliferation were examined by cell count. RESULTS Inhibition of activation of ERK1 and ERK2 by 1 x 10(-7) mol/L Dex occurred synchronously at 5 min, with maximum up to 41% and 54%, respectively at 30 min compared with the control (P < 0.001), and sustained until 4 h. The effect increased with the increasement of concentration of Dex (1 x 10(-10)-1 x 10(-6) mol/L). RU486, an antagonist of glucocorticoid receptor (GR), did not block the effect. PD98059, an inhibitor of MEK1/2, also inhibited HO-8910 cell proliferation and could enhance the growth-inhibition effect of Dex. CONCLUSION Dex can rapidly inhibit ERK1/2 activation in a GR-independent manner in HO-8910 cells, which might play a role in Dex-mediated growth inhibition.
Physician emigration from Germany: insights from a survey in Saxony, Germany

Abstract:Background: Physician migration has been gaining attention worldwide. In Germany, physician migration became a topic of interest in the context of the discussion about a shortage of physicians, for which one contributing factor may be physicians leaving the country. However, there is a lack of literature on "push" factors causing German physicians to leave. The present study seeks to provide current data in an effort to promote the identification of "push" factors motivating German physicians to emigrate. Methods: In a cross-sectional survey, all physicians ≤40 years of age registered with the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony, Germany (n = 5956) were sent a paper-pencil questionnaire examining socio-demographics, job satisfaction, the wish to emigrate, and the likelihood of moving abroad in the near future. Variables associated with the wish to emigrate were assessed with multivariate logistic regression models. Results: Approximately 30% of participants wished to emigrate. The favourite destination countries were Switzerland, Scandinavian countries, and Australia or New Zealand. Of participants wishing to emigrate, approximately 52% thought it likely to emigrate for a limited, and 15% for an unlimited period of time. Participants with the wish to emigrate were significantly less satisfied with their job situation as compared to physicians without the wish to emigrate, the one exception being their "relationship with patients". The three aspects with the highest difference in satisfaction were the overall work situation, followed by work load, and time for family, friends, and leisure activities. Being a woman, being in a relationship, and having children were associated with a lower chance for wishing to emigrate. Higher satisfaction with the factors "work load", "patient care", and "structural aspects" was also associated with a lower chance for wishing to emigrate. Conclusions: Emigration seems to be a viable option for at least a subset of physicians. Preventive measures should address modifiable determinants associated with an increased chance for wishing to emigrate, such as job satisfaction. Especially satisfaction with the factor "work load" seems to play a crucial role as a "push" factor for physician emigration.

Abstract:Hintergrund In vielen Ländern mit hohem Einkommen herrscht ärztlicher Fachkräftemangel. Auch in vielen Rehabilitationseinrichtungen in Deutschland bestehen Schwierigkeiten beim Halten und Rekrutieren von Mediziner:innen. Bisher liegen keine Studien darüber vor, welche Fachabteilungen und Einrichtungen mit welcher Indikation und in welcher Lage davon besonders betroffen sind. Dieser Artikel hat zum Ziel, mit einem explorativen Vorgehen empirische Anhaltspunkte zum Phänomen ärztlicher Fachkräftemangel in Rehabilitationsfachabteilungen zu liefern. Materialien und Methoden Die Datengrundlage für die explorative Analyse stammt aus einer Fachabteilungsumfrage aller stationärer und ambulanter Rehabilitationseinrichtungen der Qualitätssicherungsdatenbank der DRV (QS-REDA). Die Umfrage mit inhaltlichem Fokus auf Mediziner:innen mit ausländischem Abschluss enthielt einen Abschnitt zum Thema ärztlicher Fachkräftemangel, für welchen von n=373 Fachabteilungsleitungen Angaben zuverschiedenen, mit Fachkräftemangel assoziierten, Indikatoren vorlagen. Aus den drei einzelnen Indikatoren (1) Vakanzzeit, (2) Fluktuationsrate und (3) Anteil unbesetzter Stellen erstellten wir mittels Quartilssplit am 25. und 75. Perzentil Extremgruppen (−1, 0, 1) und summierten diese zu einem Index. Fachabteilungen mit empirischen Auffälligkeiten auf mind. 2 Einzelindikatoren wurden auf dem Fachkräftemangel-Index als "hoch" klassifiziert. Es werden bivariate Zusammenhänge zwischen den Kategorien des Fachkräftemangel-Index und weiteren strukturellen und regionalen Fachabteilungsvariablen mittels Chi-Quadrat-Tests ausgewertet. Ergebnisse Die Ergebnisse der Umfrage zeigen, dass es eher mittelgroße, peripher gelegene Einrichtungen, mit einer stationären oder gemischten Behandlungsform und ohne die Behandlungsschwerpunkte Orthopädie oder Rheuma sind, die unter ärztlichem Fachkräftemangel leiden. Am stärksten ist der Zusammenhang des Fachkräftemangel-Index mit der siedlungsstrukturellen Typisierung der Fachabteilung (χ2(8)=34,3; p≤0,001). Schlussfolgerungen Die Lage zahlreicher Rehabilitationseinrichtungen in ländlichen Gebieten stellt eine zusätzliche Rekrutierungsbarriere für ärztliches Personal dar. Das Thema ärztlicher Fachkräftemangel in Rehabilitationseinrichtungen ist bisher nicht erforscht. In Zukunft ist abzusehen, dass die Zahl der Ärzt:innen den Bedarf noch weniger decken wird. Um diesen auszugleichen, sind strukturierte Maßnahmen notwendig. Background Many high-income countries are experiencing a physicians' shortage. A large number of rehabilitation facilities in Germany are also having trouble keeping and recruiting physicians. So far no studies have been conducted into which departments and facilities with what indications and in which locations are worst affected. The objective of this article is to take an explorative approach to provide empirical indications on the phenomenon of physicians' shortages in rehabilitation facilities. Materials and Methods The data foundation for the exploratory analysis originates from a departmental survey encompassing all inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation facilities within the Quality Assurance Database of the German Pension Insurance (QS-REDA). The survey, with a thematic focus on medical professionals holding foreign qualifications, featured a section dedicated to the topic of physician workforce shortages, wherein n=373 departmental heads provided information on diverse indicators associated with the shortage of skilled professionals.
