Abstract:In the context of the information society, wearable devices show broad prospects in the fields of vital signs monitoring, plant health monitoring, artificial electronic skin. As an inseparable part of wearable devices, flexible pressure/strain sensors have attracted wide attention. Structures and active materials are core factors affecting sensing performance. For the past few years, the introduction of carbon materials, especially carbon nanotubes, has provided more possibilities for improving performance. Great efforts have been devoted to researching pressure/strain sensors based on carbon nanotubes with excellent performance or unique features. Herein, the process in recent years in novel flexible pressure/strain sensors based on carbon nanotubes is reviewed. Fabrication strategies are discussed because it suggests sensing performance with significant differences and gives additional features like biodegradability and corrosion resistance to sensors. Furthermore, the scope of application has been extended to plant monitor, except for common human movement monitor. This review can help the researchers compare the influence of different fabrication strategies on the sensing performance and provide references for fabricating sensors in different applications.

Abstract:Unlike metals, ceramics, or plastics, hydrogels are semi-solid, hydrophilic polymer networks with high water content. Embedding nanostructures or nanomaterials into hydrogels can impart special properties to the composites, such as anisotropy, optical or electrical properties. With the development of nanomaterials and advanced synthetic methods, nanocomposite hydrogels have attracted growing research interest in recent years due to their desirable mechanical properties, optical/electrical functions, reversibility, stimulus sensitivity, and biocompatibility. They have opened up a broad range of applications as stretchable strain sensors in mapping of strain distributions, motion detection, health-monitoring, and flexible skin-like devices. This minireview summarizes the recent developments in nanocomposite hydrogels as strain sensors based on optical and electrical signals. The strain sensing performances and their dynamic properties are discussed. Appropriate embedding of nanostructures or nanomaterials in hydrogels and engineering of interactions between nanomaterials and polymer networks can yield significant improvements in the performance of strain sensors.

Abstract:With the surging demand for wearable sensor devices, the collective focus of the wearable field has shifted to developing flexible and highly resilient hydrogel sensors with strong adhesiveness. In this study, hydrogel nanofiber composites were fabricated using an interpenetrating framework comprising thermoplastic polyurethane nanofibers and tannic acid-derived adhesive hydrogels. The resultant hydrogel nanofiber composites were distinguished based on their suppleness and adhesion. The material adhered to the human skin surface and an array of other surfaces while displaying commendable extensibility. The substance also exhibited remarkable antibacterial attributes and durability. Because of these advantageous attributes, the synthesized hydrogel nanofiber composite can be used to develop flexible strain sensors for tracking microscopic physiological signals and human movements. Notably, manipulators can be used with these hydrogel nanofiber composites to grasp items and make various digital gestures. The findings of this study are expected to drive research on hydrogel strain sensors in the near future.

Abstract:The Conducting of polymers belongs to the class of polymers exhibiting excellence in electrical performances because of their intrinsic delocalized π- electrons and their tunability ranges from semi-conductive to metallic conductive regime. Conducting polymers and their composites serve greater functionality in the application of strain and pressure sensors, especially in yielding a better figure of merits, such as improved sensitivity, sensing range, durability, and mechanical robustness. The electrospinning process allows the formation of micro to nano-dimensional fibers with solution-processing attributes and offers an exciting aspect ratio by forming ultra-long fibrous structures. This review comprehensively covers the fundamentals of conducting polymers, sensor fabrication, working modes, and recent trends in achieving the sensitivity, wide-sensing range, reduced hysteresis, and durability of thin film, porous, and nanofibrous sensors. Furthermore, nanofiber and textile-based sensory device importance and its growth towards futuristic wearable electronics in a technological era was systematically reviewed to overcome the existing challenges.

Abstract:Hydrogels, as classic soft materials, are important materials for tissue engineering and biosensing with unique properties, such as good biocompatibility, high stretchability, strong adhesion, excellent self-healing, and self-recovery. Conductive hydrogels possess the additional property of conductivity, which endows them with advanced applications in actuating devices, biomedicine, and sensing. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent development of conductive hydrogels in the field of strain sensors, with particular focus on the types of conductive fillers, including ionic conductors, conducting nanomaterials, and conductive polymers. The synthetic methods of such conductive hydrogel materials and their physical and chemical properties are highlighted. At last, challenges and future perspectives of conductive hydrogels applied in flexible strain sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable strain/pressure sensors are of extraordinary interest in underwater applications such as underwater motion monitoring and marine environmental exploration. With tunable mechanical properties, biocompatibility and multifunctional characteristics, gel can be structurally designed and network cross-linked to obtain excellent swelling resistance in underwater environments, making them one of the most promising materials for constructing strain/pressure sensors for underwater applications. However, the complex underwater environment and different application scenarios put higher demands on the sensing sensitivity and accuracy of gel sensors. In recent years, gel sensors with multifunctional underwater properties have been developed to ensure long-term stable sensing underwater. In this review we first summarized the sensing mechanism of gel-based underwater strain/pressure sensors, and then summarized the strategy for designing gel sensors with multifunctional underwater characteristics by analyzing the relationship between different functional characteristics and sensing parameters. According to the development trend in recent years, we summarized the common application fields for underwater strain/pressure gel sensors. Finally, we presented our views on the challenges of building underwater gel sensors in the future, with the expectation of providing useful insights for the design and development of next-generation underwater strain/pressure sensors.

Abstract:Due to the wide application of wearable electronic devices in daily life, research into flexible electronics has become very attractive. Recently, various polymer-based sensors have emerged with great sensing performance and excellent extensibility. It is well known that different structural designs each confer their own unique, great impacts on the properties of materials. For polymer-based pressure/strain sensors, different structural designs determine different response-sensing mechanisms, thus showing their unique advantages and characteristics. This paper mainly focuses on polymer-based pressure-sensing materials applied in different microstructures and reviews their respective advantages. At the same time, polymer-based pressure sensors with different microstructures, including with respect to their working mechanisms, key parameters, and relevant operating ranges, are discussed in detail. According to the summary of its performance and mechanisms, different morphologies of microstructures can be designed for a sensor according to its performance characteristics and application scenario requirements, and the optimal structure can be adjusted by weighing and comparing sensor performances for the future. Finally, a conclusion and future perspectives are described.

Abstract:Pressure sensors show significant potential applications in health monitoring, bio-sensing, electronic skin, and tactile perception. Consequently, tremendous research interest has been devoted to the development of high-performance pressure sensors. In this paper, recent progress on the polymer composite-based flexible pressure sensor is reviewed. The parameters of pressure sensors, including sensitivity, linear response range, detection limit, response speed, and reliability, are first introduced. Secondly, representative types of pressure sensors and relevant working principles are introduced and discussed. After that, the applications in human physiology monitoring, health monitoring, artificial skin, and self-powered smart system are listed and discussed in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and outlook of polymer composite-based flexible sensors are summarized at the end of this review paper. This work should have some impact on the development of high-performance flexible pressure sensors.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a huge demand for flexible pressure sensors in various fields, including smart wearable textiles, health detection, and electronic skin. Flexible pressure sensors have been developed with high sensitivity, wide sensing range, rapid response time, and excellent cycling stability. Currently, emerging conductive materials include two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes). These materials have attracted immense attention in the field of flexible pressure sensors due to their high electrical conductivity, large specific surface area, and satisfactory hydrophilicity. This review highlights different preparation methods of MXene composites. It also summarizes the nanostructure design of pressure-sensitive materials to improve the performance of flexible pressure sensors for soft electronics applications. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the progress of MXene composites and their prospects in the area of flexible pressure sensors and summarizes the applications and challenges of these sensors in intelligent wearables. This review also proposes some suggestions for developing a new generation of intelligent textiles.

Carbon Nanotubes/Hydrophobically Associated Hydrogels as Ultrastretchable, Highly Sensitive, Stable Strain, and Pressure Sensors

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have become one of the most promising materials for skin-like sensors because of their excellent biocompatibility and mechanical flexibility. However, the limited stretchability, low toughness, and fatigue resistance lead to a narrow sensing region and insufficient durability of the hydrogel-based sensors. In this work, an extremely stretchable, highly tough, and anti-fatigue conductive nanocomposite hydrogel is prepared by integrating hydrophobic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into hydrophobically associated polyacrylamide (HAPAAm) hydrogel. In this conductive hydrogel, amphiphilic sodium dodecyl sulfate was used to ensure uniform dispersion of CNTs in the hydrogel network, and hydrophobic interactions between the hydrogel matrix and the CNT surface formed, greatly improving the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The obtained CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel showed excellent stretchability (ca. 3000%), toughness (3.42 MJ m-3), and great anti-fatigue property. Moreover, it exhibits both high tensile strain sensitivity in the wide strain ranges (gauge factor = 4.32, up to 1000%) and high linear sensitivity (0.127 kPa-1) in a large-pressure region within 0-50 kPa. The CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel-based sensors can sensitively and stably detect full-range human activities (e.g., elbow rotation, finger bending, swallowing motion, and pronouncing) and handwriting, demonstrating the CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel's potential as the wearable strain and pressure sensors for flexible devices.

Highly Sensitive Pressure and Strain Sensors Based on Stretchable and Recoverable Ion-Conductive Physically Cross-Linked Double-Network Hydrogels

Abstract:Ion-conductive hydrogel sensors have attracted great research interests for applications in wearable devices, electronic skins, and implantable sensors, but most such sensors are fragile, with low conductivity and sensitivity. This study reports on novel ion-conductive double network hydrogels with a cross-linked helical structure, hydrophobic association, and metal-ion coordination. The helical κ-carrageenan first network and the second network cross-linked by Pluronic F127 diacrylate micelles and tridentate Fe3+–COO– coordination work synergistically to show the tensile strength of 2.7 MPa, fracture strain of 1400%, and tensile toughness of 9.82 MJ m–3 and fatigue resistance against cyclic loadings with high strains. The hydrogels show an ion conductivity of 1.15 S m–1, a strain sensitivity of up to 2.8, and a pressure sensitivity of 0.33 kPa–1. Sensor arrays fabricated from the conductive hydrogels provide an in-plane detection of pressures less than 200 Pa. Abstract:Recently, the application of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in the field of hydrogel sensors has attracted much attention. However, it remains challenging to construct CNC-reinforced conductive hydrogels with a combination of enhanced strength, low hysteresis, high elasticity and remarkable adhesiveness. Herein, we present a facile method to prepare conductive nanocomposite hydrogels with the above-mentioned properties by reinforcing chemically crosslinked poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel with rational-designed copolymer-grafted CNCs. The copolymer-grafted CNCs interact with PAA matrix to form carboxyl-amide conventional hydrogen bonds and carboxyl-amino ionic hydrogen bonds, among which the ionic hydrogen bonds with rapid recovery capability are critical to the low hysteresis and high elasticity of hydrogel. The introduction of copolymer-grafted CNCs endowed the hydrogels with enhanced tensile/compressive strength, high resilience (>95 %) during tensile cyclic loading, rapid self-recovery during compressive cyclic loading and improved adhesiveness. Thanks to the high elasticity and durability of hydrogel, the assembled hydrogel sensors exhibited good cycling repeatability and durability in detecting various strains, pressures and human motions. The hydrogel sensors also showed satisfying sensitivity. Hence, the proposed preparation method and the obtained CNC-reinforced conductive hydrogels would open new avenues in flexible strain and pressure sensors for human motion detection and beyond.

Abstract:Flexible sensors are the essential foundations of pressure sensing, microcomputer sensing systems, and wearable devices. The flexible tactile sensor can sense stimuli by converting external forces into electrical signals. The electrical signals are transmitted to a computer processing system for analysis, realizing real-time health monitoring and human motion detection. According to the working mechanism, tactile sensors are mainly divided into four types—piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, and triboelectric tactile sensors. Conventional silicon-based tactile sensors are often inadequate for flexible electronics due to their limited mechanical flexibility. In comparison, polymeric nanocomposites are flexible and stretchable, which makes them excellent candidates for flexible and wearable tactile sensors. Among the promising polymers, conjugated polymers (CPs), due to their unique chemical structures and electronic properties that contribute to their high electrical and mechanical conductivity, show great potential for flexible sensors and wearable devices. In this paper, we first introduce the parameters of pressure sensors. Then, we describe the operating principles of resistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, and triboelectric sensors, and review the pressure sensors based on conjugated polymer nanocomposites that were reported in recent years. After that, we introduce the performance characteristics of flexible sensors, regarding their applications in healthcare, human motion monitoring, electronic skin, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence. In addition, we summarize and compare the performances of conjugated polymer nanocomposite-based pressure sensors that were reported in recent years. Finally, we summarize the challenges and future directions of conjugated polymer nanocomposite-based sensors.

Abstract:To realize long-term and stable applications of wearable and flexible sensors for motion detection, health analysis and wisdom medication in harsh environments, self-healing, self-adhesive, electrically conductive and biocompatible polyacrylamide (PAM) nanocomposite hydrogels are fabricated as flexible strain or pressure sensors by in situ polymerization of acrylamide in the presence of polydopamine-modified carbon nanotubes () for effectively detecting human motions, identifying materials and their shapes, and transmitting health information. The resultant /PAM nanocomposite hydrogel exhibits a high self-healing efficiency of 97.3%, excellent biocompatibility, and strong adhesion with substrates based on hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions. Based on the piezoresistive effect, the nanocomposite hydrogel-based strain sensor exhibits a high sense gauge factor of 3.93 at a strain of 400% and responds quickly with a fast response time of 76 ms when detecting human movement. Thanks to the contact electrification and the electrostatic induction, the nanocomposite hydrogel-based pressure sensor can respond to pressure linearly and generate voltage signals in the absence of an additional power supply. Furthermore, the self-powered smart ring made of the silicone rubber-coated /PAM hydrogel enables efficient and concise information transmission via Morse code.

Therefore, it is necessary to understand the functionalization strategies and summarize the latest research progress of hydrogel strain sensors with maximum performance for smart electronic devices applications. Herein, this review presents the classification and structural characteristics of hydrogel materials and the sensing mechanisms of strain sensors. Then, we summarize the design strategies for the functionalization of hydrogels and examine the advanced hydrogel strain sensors with improved usage performance and functionality. Finally, the application scenarios and future application prospects of functionalized hydrogel-based strain sensors are discussed. This review provides a meaningful reference for the tailored design and development of multifunctional hydrogels for flexible electronics industry.
