Abstract:How migratory birds can find the right way when navigating over thousands of miles is an intriguing question that has greatly interested researchers in both the fields of biology and physics for centuries. There are several putative proposals that sound intuitively plausible; all remain contested so far because these hypothetical models of magnetoreceptors that sense the geomagnetic field need either extremely high sensitivity or humankind-like intelligence to guide. Here we explore theoretically whether birds can navigate to their destination through an entirely new scenario to sense the geomagnetic field. Our proposal is based on separate peaks of the resonance-fluorescence spectrum of a four-level system derived from the ferric sulfide cluster that exists in a MagR/Cry protein complex (Drosophila CG8198) of migratory birds. As the separation of spectral peaks contains information about the geomagnetic field at both the current location and the birthland, the change of such separation cues the bird to choose the right direction to move, and double-resonance emerges once it has arrived at its destination. Our theoretical mechanism can explain previous experiments on the disorientation of migratorybirds caused by oscillating magnetic field naturally and more precisely. This work provides insight into explaining migratory navigation and motivates possible humanmade practical devices.

Abstract:The homology between the avian hippocampal formation (HF) and mammalian hippocampus nurtures the expectation that HF plays a fundamental role in navigation by migratory birds. Indeed, HF of migratory birds displays anatomical properties that differ from non-migratory species. Using a hypothetical framework of multiple maps of differing spatial resolution and range, homing pigeon data suggest that HF is important for navigating by landscape features near familiar breeding, over-wintering, and stop-over sites. By contrast, HF would be unimportant for an olfactory navigational map, which could be operational over unfamiliar space farther away from a goal location, nor is there any evidence for HF involvement in the sun or geomagnetic compass. The most intriguing question that remains open is what role HF may play in navigation when a migrant is thousands kms away from a familiar area, where homing pigeon data are uninformative and a geomagnetic map may be operational. Beyond navigation, successful migration depends on seasonal timing and often becoming nocturnally active. There is little evidence that HF plays a role in the timing of circannual and circadian cycles. Rather, circadian pacemakers including the pineal gland may control circadian timing of nocturnal restlessness and photoperiodic seasonal pacemakers likely control circannual expression.

Abstract:Bird is one of the most abundant and widespread groups in the world.With many specialized structures,such as plumage,air sacs,and hollow bones,most bird species have got flight ability to adapt various niches.Therefore,bird can migrate between wintering and breeding ground,which is usually a long distance,and it's called migration.Bird navigation is important in migration and is a complex process,which attracts many scientists to dig in how bird finds its way.Since 1873,Charles Darwin has ever mentioned that bird might take the method of dead reckoning on a long-distance migration like human,but at that time no one made further progress.Until 1950s,Kramer firstly found that Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) can respond to solar azimuth via mirror test.From then on,many experiments revealed that at least four navigation mechanisms are used in bird migration via more than nine external factors.They are:(i) celestial navigation,celestial clues (e.g.solar azimuth,star position,and polarized light) are used during migration period.(ii)Olfactory navigation,odor distributing in the air forms odorous gradient map or mosaic map which can be detected,or can activate directly certain mechanism to navigate.(iii) Auditory navigation,infrasound (0.05 Hz) produced by mountains and rivers generate sonic gradient map.And (iv) magnetic navigation,geomagnetic field can be detected via magnetic materials or chemical magnetoreception to find correct directions.Although many scientists approve that magnetic navigation may be the main mechanism to orientate and navigate,bird has never taken just one mechanism to migrate.Indeed,many species also use the other three mechanisms to calibrate direction,for example,Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis) can use polarized light to calibrate the magnetic compass at both sunrise and sunset.Different external clues correspond to different sense organs,so various brain areas should deal with information from different navigation mechanisms.The hippocampus participates in spatial perception and manages anything about celestial navigation via the tectofugal visual pathway and the thalamofugal visual pathway.The piriform cortex (CPi) is the main area to receive stimulation from olfactory bulb and determines how to migrate after receiving olfactory clues.Nervous systems of magnetic navigation include two parts which are trigeminus system and Cluster N.Despite the controversy whether there are some magnetic materials on bird,many experimental evidences have proved that magnetic materials detecting geomagnetic field involve to Trigeminus system.Cluster N,however,is an active area when bird migrates at night and it has an important role in transferring information from chemical magnetoreception to the hippocampus.As illustrated above,navigation mechanisms can get full information from many clues,and then,different brain areas trade off those and co-operate each other to make an elaborate map.Bird navigation involves the receptors to environment and the response of nervous system,so many issues are still maintained.The exact mechanism will be revealed with the new techniques and model animal applied.

Abstract:The homing pigeon is the foundational model species used to investigate the neural control of avian navigation. The olfactory system is critically involved in implementing the so-called olfactory map, used to locate position relative to home from unfamiliar locations. The hippocampal formation supports a complementary navigational system based on familiar visual landmarks. Insight into the neural control of pigeon navigation has been revolutionised by GPS-tracking technology, which has been crucial for both detailing the critical role of environmental odours for navigation over unfamiliar areas as well as offering unprecedented insight into the role of the hippocampal formation in visual landscape/landmark-based navigation, including a possible, unexpected role in visual–spatial perception.

Abstract:23 True navigation requires both a ‘compass’ (direction) and a ‘map’ (current position relative to 24 goal) sense. Although some species are capable of adjusting towards a goal after displacement, 25 the environmental cues used for a map sense remain elusive. Two possibilities are geomagnetic 26 parameters (magnetic map hypothesis) or atmospheric odour-forming gradients (olfactory map 27 hypothesis). In this study, we examined both of these hypotheses by surgically deactivating 28 either the magnetic or olfactory sensory systems in experienced white-throated sparrows 29 (Zonotrichia albicollis) captured in southern Ontario, Canada, during spring migration. Treated, 30 sham-treated and intact birds were then displaced 2,200 km west to Saskatchewan, Canada. 31 Tracking their initial post-displacement migration using an array of automated VHF receiving 32 towers, we found no evidence in any of the groups for compensatory directional response 33 towards their expected breeding grounds. Our results suggest that white-throated sparrows may 34 fall back to a simple constant-vector orientation strategy instead of performing true navigation 35 after they have been geographically displaced to an unfamiliar area during spring migration. 36 Such a basic strategy may be more common than currently thought in experienced migratory 37 birds and its occurrence could be determined by habitat preferences or range size. 38 39

Abstract:Migrating animals perform astonishing seasonal movements by orienting and navigating over thousands of kilometres with great precision. Many migratory species use cues from the sun, stars, landmarks, olfaction and the Earth's magnetic field for this task. Among vertebrates, songbirds are the most studied taxon in magnetic‐cue‐related research. Despite multiple studies, we still lack a clear understanding of when, where and how magnetic cues affect the decision‐making process of birds and hence, their realised migratory behaviour in the wild. This understanding is especially important to interpret the results of laboratory experiments in an ecologically appropriate way. In this review, we summarise the current findings about the role of magnetic cues for migratory decisions in songbirds. First, we review the methodological principles for orientation and navigation research, specifically by comparing experiments on caged birds with experiments on free‐flying birds. While cage experiments can show the sensory abilities of birds, studies with free‐flying birds can characterise the ecological roles of magnetic cues. Second, we review the migratory stages, from stopover to endurance flight, in which songbirds use magnetic cues for their migratory decisions and incorporate this into a novel conceptual framework. While we lack studies examining whether and when magnetic cues affect orientation or navigation decisions during flight, the role of magnetic cues during stopover is relatively well studied, but mostly in the laboratory. Notably, many such studies have produced contradictory results so that understanding the biological importance of magnetic cues for decisions in free‐flying songbirds is not straightforward. One potential explanation is that reproducibility of magnetic‐cue experiments is low, probably because variability in the behavioural responses of birds among experiments is high. We are convinced that parts of this variability can be explained by species‐specific and context‐dependent reactions of birds to the study conditions and by the bird's high flexibility in whether they include magnetic cues in a decision or not. Ultimately, this review should help researchers in the challenging field of magnetoreception to design experiments meticulously and interpret results of such studies carefully by considering the migration ecology of their focal species.

Abstract:Migratory birds are able to navigate over great distances with remarkable accuracy. The mechanism they use to achieve this feat is thought to involve two distinct steps: locating their position (the ‘map’) and heading towards the direction determined (the ‘compass’). For decades, this map-and-compass concept has shaped our perception of navigation in animals, although the nature of the map remains debated. However, some recent studies suggest the involvement of the Earth’s magnetic field in the map step. Here, we tested whether migratory songbirds, Eurasian reed warblers ( Acrocephalus scirpaceus ), can determine their position based on two magnetic field components that are also associated with direction finding, i.e. magnetic inclination and magnetic declination. During a virtual magnetic displacement experiment, the birds were exposed to altered magnetic inclination and magnetic declination values that would indicate a displacement from their natural migratory corridor, but the total intensity of the field remained unchanged, creating a spatial mismatch between these components. The response was a change in the birds’ migratory direction consistent with a compensatory re-orientation. This suggests that birds can extract positional as well as directional information from these cues, even when they are in conflict with another component of the magnetic field. It remains to be seen whether birds use the total intensity of Earth’s magnetic field for navigation.

Abstract:SUMMARY The question of whether homing pigeons use visual landmarks for orientation from distant, familiar sites is an unresolved issue in the field of avian navigation. Where evidence has been found, the question still remains as to whether the landmarks are used independent of the map and compass mechanism for orientation that is so important to birds. Recent research has challenged the extent to which experiments that do not directly manipulate the visual sense can be used as evidence for compass-independent orientation. However, it is proposed that extending a new technique for research on vision in homing to include manipulation of the compasses used by birds might be able to resolve this issue. The effect of the structure of the visual sense of the homing pigeon on its use of visual landmarks is also considered.

Abstract:Animals use the geomagnetic field and astronomical cues to obtain compass information. The magnetic compass is not a uniform mechanism, as several functional modes have been described in different animal groups. The Sun compass requires the internal clock to interpret the position of the Sun. For star compass orientation, night-migrating birds seem to use the star pattern as a whole, without involving the internal clock. Both the astronomical compass mechanisms are based on learning processes to adapt them to the geographic latitude where the animals live and, in long-living animals, to compensate for the seasonal changes. Several mechanisms are used to determine the compass course to a goal. Using information collected during the outward journey is mostly done by path integration: recording the direction with a compass and integrating its twists and turns. Migratory animals have innate programs to guide them to their still unknown goal. Highly mobile animals with large ranges develop a so-called navigational 'map', a mental representation of the spatial distribution of navigational factors within their home region and their migration route. The nature of the factors involved is not yet entirely clear; magnetic intensity and inclination are the ones best supported so far.

Abstract:Algeria cannot be discussed without mentioning the terrorism that has afflicted it forthe past decade. Previous studies of political violence, particularly terrorism, underemphasise the importance of demographic factors. In his review of research on the consequences of population growth, Geoffrey McNicoll' notes a general neglect of demographic factors in social science fields that seek to explain social and economic change. Careful studies on the role tliai population growth plays in political destabilisation in Africa are even rarer due in large part to a lack t)f reliable data." Likewise, most studies of Algeria's recent political history acknowledge the role of population growth, but many explanations of the country's civil strife primarily focus on political variables and actors. Using a combination of aggregate demographic and economic data and individual-level survey data, this essay seeks to address these gaps by examining the impact of demographics on Algeria's economy and society and how the resulting changes ai'e translated at various levels of the social system, including the level of individual behaviour, into conditions that contribute to violence. This research suggests that population growth has created large generational cohorts, scimelimes called "youth bulges', that the Algerian labour and matrimonial markets have been unable to absorb. Faced with these socio-economic barriers, these cohorts become increasingly disaffected and socially alienated, making them vulnerable to recruitment by political actors who treat them as a "reserve army' in their strategic acts of political terrorism. While demographic factors clearly are associated with political violence, attributing terrorism to these causes alone overlooks other important variables, such as the actors and resources involved in the co-ordination of arms, funds, strategies, information and communications, none of which are directly accessible to the masses of excluded youth who often act as terrorism's tool soldiers, For example, the mechanisms by which internal
An infrasound-based avian navigational “map”

Abstract:The “compasses” (solar, star, geomagnetic) that homing pigeons and other migratory birds use to orient during flight are generally understood, but the “map” sense they need to first determine their homeward direction is not. Atmospheric odor and geomagnetic gradients have been proposed as “map” cues, but are inadequate and remain controversial. Experiments with frosted lenses indicate that sight can also be ruled out. Laboratory tests, however, show that pigeons can detect infrasound (>0.05 Hz), and such signals travel with little attenuation for 1000s of kilometers through the atmosphere. Results from an acoustic ray-tracing program (HARPA) using daily atmospheric profiles are compared with pigeon release data for a number of sites in upstate NY. HARPA runs show that homeward infrasonic cues could have arrived at the sites from directions opposite pigeon departure bearings, especially when these bearings were unusual. Such signals possibly arise from ground-to-air coupling of microseisms or from scattering of microbaroms off terrain features (~0.2 Hz). Pigeons and other birds might use Doppler shifts to determine the directionality of homeward infrasonic cues while flying in circular or other patterns at constant velocity after release; they apparently have built-in airspeed indicators adapted from their olfactory and aural systems.

Abstract:Massive bird migration across continents and seas is one of the most spectacular phenomena in nature, involving billions of birds annually. In the autumn, most birds on migration are juveniles migrating for the first time while adults are repeating their migrations. Migration syndrome in individual bird migrants involves multiple behavioural, morphological and physiological adaptations, and migration performance may improve with experience and age. In this review, we discuss in what ways young and adult birds differ with respect to migration performance and compass orientation during migration, how they respond to external information including topography and winds during migration, and what phenotypic characteristics related to migratory behaviour may change over a lifetime in individual birds. Here, we present the prevailing concepts of navigation, including compass mechanisms leading birds across the globe to predictable goals, and the underlying sources of variability within and between individuals and age groups. In particular, we focus on what changes in the endogenous migration program may lead to more efficient realizations of migration with age. We review our data combined with other data presented in the literature, based on different techniques to study the migration phenotype expression in caged and free-flying birds with different migratory adaptations. The widespread use of tracking technology to study birds in different environments and geographical areas has largely contributed to our current knowledge on how migration performance improves with age. Still, there is a need to understand in more detail how migration performance, timing and route choices develop across time in individual migrants, and what navigational information is used to guide birds across the globe from the first and following migrations.

Abstract:Homing pigeons (Columba livia) have been the central model of avian navigation research for many decades, but only more recently has research extended into understanding their mechanisms of orientation in the familiar area. The discovery (facilitated by GPS tracking) that pigeons gradually acquire with experience individually idiosyncratic routes home to which they remain faithful on repeated releases, even if displaced off-route, has helped uncover the fundamental role of familiar visual landmarks in the avian familiar area map. We evaluate the robustness and generality of the route-following phenomenon by examining extant studies in depth, including the single published counter-example, providing a detailed comparison of route efficiencies, flight corridor widths and fidelity. We combine this analysis with a review of inferences that can be drawn from other experimental approaches to understanding the nature of familiar area orientation in pigeons, including experiments on landmark recognition, and response to clock-shift, to build the first detailed picture of how bird orientation develops with experience of the familiar area. We articulate alternative hypotheses for how guidance might be controlled during route following, concluding that although much remains unknown, the details of route following strongly support a pilotage interpretation. Predictable patterns of efficiency increase, but limited to the local route, typical corridor widths of 100–200 m, high-fidelity pinch-points on route, attraction to landscape edges, and a robustness to clock-shift procedures, all demonstrate that birds can associatively acquire a map of their familiar area guided (at least partially) by direct visual control from memorised local landscape features.

Abstract:Birds and social insects represent excellent systems for understanding visually guided navigation. Both animal groups use surrounding visual cues for homing and foraging. Ants extract sufficient spatial information from panoramic views, which naturally embed all near and far spatial information, for successful homing. Although egocentric panoramic views allow for parsimonious explanations of navigational behaviors, this potential source of spatial information has been mostly neglected during studies of vertebrates. Here we investigate how distinct landmarks, a beacon, and panoramic views influence the reorientation behavior in pigeons ( Columba livia ). Pigeons were trained to search for a location characterized by a beacon and several distinct landmarks. Transformation tests manipulated aspects of the landmark configuration, allowing for a dissociation among navigational strategies. Quantitative image and path analyses provided support that the panoramic view was used by the pigeons. Although the results from some individuals support the use of beaconing, overall the pigeons relied predominantly on the panoramic view when spatial cues provided conflicting information regarding the goal location. Reorientation based on vector and bearing information derived from distinct landmarks as well as environmental geometry failed to account fully for the results. Thus, the results of our study support that pigeons can use panoramic views for reorientation in familiar environments. Given that the current model for landmark use by pigeons posits the use of different vectors from an object, a global panorama-matching strategy suggests a fundamental change in the theory of how pigeons use surrounding visual cues for localization.

Abstract:Abstract The behaviours and cognitive mechanisms animals use to orient, navigate, and remember spatial locations exemplify how cognitive abilities have evolved to suit a number of different mobile lifestyles and habitats. While spatial cognition observed in vertebrates has been well characterised in recent decades, of no less interest are the great strides that have also been made in characterizing and understanding the behavioural and cognitive basis of orientation and navigation in invertebrate models and in particular insects. Insects are known to exhibit remarkable spatial cognitive abilities and are able to successfully migrate over long distances or pinpoint known locations relying on multiple navigational strategies similar to those found in vertebrate models—all while operating under the constraint of relatively limited neural architectures. Insect orientation and navigation systems are often tailored to each species’ ecology, yet common mechanistic principles can be observed repeatedly. Of these, reliance on visual cues is observed across a wide number of insect groups. In this review, we characterise some of the behavioural strategies used by insects to solve navigational problems, including orientation over short-distances, migratory heading maintenance over long distances, and homing behaviours to known locations. We describe behavioural research using examples from a few well-studied insect species to illustrate how visual cues are used in navigation and how they interact with non-visual cues and strategies.

Abstract:The geomagnetic field (GMF) is a worldwide source of compass cues used by animals and humans alike. The inclination of GMF flux lines also provides information on geomagnetic latitude. A long-disputed question, however, is whether horizontal gradients in GMF intensity, in combination with changes in inclination, provide bicoordinate "map" information. Multiple sources contribute to the total GMF, the largest of which is the core field. The ubiquitous crustal field is much less intense, but in both land and marine settings is strong enough at low altitudes (< 700 m; sea level) to mask the core field's weak N-S intensity gradient (~ 3-5 nT/km) over 10 s to 100 s of km. Non-orthogonal geomagnetic gradients, the lack of consistent E-W gradients, and the local masking of core-field intensity gradients by the crustal field, therefore, are grounds for rejection of the bicoordinate geomagnetic "map" hypothesis. In addition, the alternative infrasound direction-finding hypothesis is briefly reviewed. The GMF's diurnal variation has long been suggested as a possible Zeitgeber (timekeeper) for circadian rhythms and could explain the GMF's non-compass role in the avian navigational system. Requirements for detection of this weaker diurnal signal (~ 20-50 nT) might explain the magnetic alignment of resting and grazing animals.

Abstract:The Earth’s magnetic field is one of several natural cues, which migratory birds can use to derive directional (“compass”) information for orientation on their biannual migratory journeys. Moreover, magnetic field effects on prominent aspects of the migratory programme of birds, such as migratory restlessness behaviour, fuel deposition and directional orientation, implicate that geomagnetic information can also be used to derive positional (“map”) information. While the magnetic “compass” in migratory birds is likely to be based on radical pair-forming molecules embedded in their visual system, the sensory correlates underlying a magnetic “map” sense currently remain elusive. Behavioural, physiological and neurobiological findings indicate that the sensor is most likely innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve and based on magnetic iron particles. Information from this unknown sensor is neither necessary nor sufficient for a functional magnetic compass, but instead could contribute important components of a multifactorial “map” for global positioning. Positional information could allow migratory birds to make vitally important dynamic adaptations of their migratory programme at any relevant point during their journeys.

Abstract:Many bird species have the ability to navigate home after being brought to a remote, even unfamiliar location. Environmental odours have been demonstrated to be critical to homeward navigation in over 40 years of experiments, yet the chemical identity of the odours has remained unknown. In this study, we investigate potential chemical navigational cues by measuring volatile organic compounds (VOCs): at the birds' home-loft; in selected regional forest environments; and from an aircraft at 180 m. The measurements showed clear regional, horizontal and vertical spatial gradients that can form the basis of an olfactory map for marine emissions (dimethyl sulphide, DMS), biogenic compounds (terpenoids) and anthropogenic mixed air (aromatic compounds), and temporal changes consistent with a sea-breeze system. Air masses trajectories are used to examine GPS tracks from released birds, suggesting that local DMS concentrations alter their flight directions in predictable ways. This dataset reveals multiple regional-scale real-world chemical gradients that can form the basis of an olfactory map suitable for homing pigeons.
