Abstract:To a complex projective structure Σ on a surface, Thurston associates a locally convex pleated surface. We derive bounds on the geometry of both in terms of the norms ‖ϕΣ‖∞ and ‖ϕΣ‖2 of the quadratic differential ϕΣ of Σ given by the Schwarzian derivative of the associated locally univalent map. We show that these give a unifying approach that generalizes a number of important, well-known results for convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds, including bounds on the Lipschitz constant for the nearest-point retraction and the length of the bending lamination. We then use these bounds to begin a study of the Weil–Petersson gradient flow of renormalized volume on the space CC(N) of convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on a compact manifold N with incompressible boundary, leading to a proof of the conjecture that the renormalized volume has infimum given by one half the simplicial volume of DN, the double of N.

Abstract:For a nonconstant holomorphic map between projective Riemann surfaces with conformal metrics, we consider invariant Schwarzian derivatives and projective Schwarzian derivatives of general virtual order. We show that these two quantities are related by the "Schwarzian derivative" of the metrics of the surfaces (at least for the case of virtual orders 2 and 3). As an application, we give univalence criteria for a meromorphic function on the unit disk in terms of the projective Schwarzian derivative of virtual order 3.

Abstract:Let S be a closed, connected, orientable surface of genus at least 2, and let C(S) denote the deformation space of convex real projective structures S. In this article, we introduce two new flows on C(S), which we call the internal bulging flow and the eruption flow. These are geometrically defined flows associated to each pair of pants in a pants decomposition on S that deform the internal parameters. We show that the eruption flows, together with the generalized twist flows about the pants curves, give rise to a half-dimensional family of commuting flows on C(S).

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a technique to degenerate K3 surfaces and linear systems through fat points in general position on K3 surfaces. Using this degeneration we show that on generic K3 surfaces it is enough to prove that linear systems with one fat point are non-special in order to obtain the non-speciality of homogeneous linear systems through n = 4^u9^w fat points in general position. Moreover, we use this degeneration to obtain a result for homogeneous linear systems through n = 4^u9^w fat points in general position on a general quartic surface in P^3.

Abstract:This is the first part of our work on Zariski decomposition structures, where we study Zariski decompositions using Legendre–Fenchel type transforms. In this way we define a Zariski decomposition for curve classes. This decomposition enables us to develop the theory of the volume function for curves defined by the second named author, yielding some fundamental positivity results for curve classes. For varieties with special structures, the Zariski decomposition for curve classes admits an interesting geometric interpretation.
The degeneration of a family of rational surface automorphisms

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional family of rational surfaces with automorphisms. In a degeneration of this family, the limiting map is the identity map on a special fiber. We check that the map on the total space of the family has indeterminacy in the special fiber. However, we show that after blowing-up at an indeterminate curve, there is an induced birational map on the exceptional divisor over the indeterminate curve. Moreover, we show that this map has dynamical degree 16.

Abstract:For any subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})\ltimes\mathbb{R}^3$ obtained by adding a translation part to a subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ which is the fundamental group of a finite-volume convex projective surface, we first show that under a natural condition on the translation parts of parabolic elements, the affine action of the group on $\mathbb{R}^3$ has convex domains of discontinuity that are regular in a certain sense, generalizing a result of Mess for globally hyperbolic flat spacetimes. We then classify all these domains and show that the quotient of each of them is an affine manifold foliated by convex surfaces with constant affine Gaussian curvature. The proof is based on a correspondence between the geometry of an affine space endowed with a convex cone and the geometry of a convex tube domain. As an independent result, we show that the moduli space of such groups is a vector bundle over the moduli space of finite-volume convex projective structures, with rank equaling the dimension of the Teichmüller space.

Exploiting degeneracy in projective geometric algebra

Abstract:The last two decades, since the seminal work of Selig, has seen projective geometric algebra (PGA) gain popularity as a modern coordinate-free framework for doing classical Euclidean geometry and other Cayley-Klein geometries. This framework is based upon a degenerate Clifford algebra, and it is the purpose of this paper to delve deeper into its internal algebraic structure and extract meaningful information for the purposes of PGA. This includes exploiting the split extension structure to realise the natural decomposition of elements of this Clifford algebra into Euclidean and ideal parts. This leads to a beautiful demonstration of how Playfair's axiom for affine geometry arises from the ambient degenerate quadratic space. The highlighted split extension property of the Clifford algebra also corresponds to a splitting of the group of units and the Lie algebra of bivectors. Central to these results is that the degenerate Clifford algebra $\mathrm{Cl}(V)$ is isomorphic to the twisted trivial extension $\mathrm{Cl}(V/\langle e_0\rangle)\ltimes_\alpha\mathrm{Cl}(V/\langle e_0\rangle)$, where $e_0$ is a degenerate vector and $\alpha$ is the grade-involution.

Abstract:We study degenerations of complex projective spaces $\mathbb P^n$ into normal projective klt varieties $X$. If the tangent sheaf of $X$ is semi-stable, we show that $X$ itself is a projective space. If $X$ is a threefold with canonical singularities, we show that there are only three varieties which satisfy all the conditions.

Abstract:This is a case study of the algebraic boundary of convex hulls of varieties. We focus on surfaces in fourspace to showcase new geometric phenomena that neither curves nor hypersurfaces exhibit. Our method is a detailed analysis of a general purpose formula by Ranestad and Sturmfels in the case of smooth real algebraic surfaces of low degree (that are rational over the complex numbers). We study both the complex and the real features of the algebraic boundary of Veronese and Del Pezzo surfaces. The main difficulties and the possible approaches to the case of general surfaces are discussed for and complemented by the example of Bordiga surfaces.

Abstract:Let $\Sigma$ be a surface of negative Euler characteristic, homeomorphic to a closed surface, possibly with a finite number of points removed. In this paper, we present a construction method for a wide range of examples of geometric transition from hyperbolic to Anti-de Sitter structures via Half-pipe geometry on $\Sigma\times\mathbb{S}^1$, with cone singularities along a link. The main ingredient lies in studying the deformation of a convex core structure as the bending laminations of the upper and lower boundary components of the convex core uniformly collapse to zero.

Abstract:We prove that the image of an isometric embedding into ${\mathbb R}^3$ of a two dimensionnal complete Riemannian manifold $(\Sigma, g)$ without boundary is a convex surface provided both the embedding and the metric $g$ enjoy a $C^{1,\alpha}$ regularity for some $\alpha>2/3$ and the distributional Gaussian curvature of $g$ is nonnegative and nonzero. The analysis must pass through some key observations regarding solutions to the very weak Monge-Ampère equation.

Abstract:For complex projective smooth surface $X$, let $M$ be the coarse moduli scheme of rank-two stable sheaves with fixed Chern classes. Grasping the birational structure of $M$, for example its Kodaira dimension, is a fundamental problem. However, in the case where $\kappa(X)>0$, the study of this problem has not necessarily been active in recent years. In this article we survey the study of this problem, especially for the case where $\kappa(X)=1$ and $c_1=0$. We will also survey some research on the structure of singularities of $M$, and a minimal model program of $M$. While explaining motivations, we raise several unsolved problems.

Abstract:Geometric structures modeled on rational homogeneous manifolds are studied to characterize rational homogeneous manifolds and to prove their deformation rigidity. To generalize these characterizations and deformation rigidity results to quasihomogeneous varieties, we first study horospherical varieties and geometric structures modeled on horospherical varieties. Using Cartan geometry, we prove that a geometric structure modeled on a smooth projective horospherical variety of Picard number one is locally equivalent to the standard geometric structure when the geometric structure is defined on a Fano manifold of Picard number one.

Abstract:Facial reduction, FR, is a regularization technique for convex programs where the strict feasibility constraint qualification, CQ, fails. Though this CQ holds generically, failure is pervasive in applications such as semidefinite relaxations of hard discrete optimization problems. In this paper we relate FR to the analysis of the convergence behaviour of a semi-smooth Newton root finding method for the projection onto a spectrahedron, i.e., onto the intersection of a linear manifold and the semidefinite cone. In the process, we derive and use an elegant formula for the projection onto a face of the semidefinite cone. We show further that the ill-conditioning of the Jacobian of the Newton method near optimality characterizes the degeneracy of the nearest point in the spectrahedron. We apply the results, both theoretically and empirically, to the problem of finding nearest points to the sets of: (i) correlation matrices or the elliptope; and (ii) semidefinite relaxations of permutation matrices or the vontope, i.e., the feasible sets for the semidefinite relaxations of the max-cut and quadratic assignment problems, respectively.

Abstract:We study projective Type II degenerations of K3 surfaces polarised by a certain rank 18 lattice, where the central fibre consists of a pair of rational surfaces glued along a smooth elliptic curve. Given such a degeneration, one may construct other degenerations of the same kind by flopping curves on the central fibre, but the degenerations obtained from this process are not usually projective. We construct a series of examples which are all projective and which are all related by flopping single curves from one component of the central fibre to the other. The components of the central fibres obtained include weak del Pezzo surfaces of all possible degrees. This shows that projectivity need not impose any meaningful constraints on the surfaces that can arise as components in Type II degenerations.
