Abstract:We study degenerations of complex projective spaces $\mathbb P^n$ into normal projective klt varieties $X$. If the tangent sheaf of $X$ is semi-stable, we show that $X$ itself is a projective space. If $X$ is a threefold with canonical singularities, we show that there are only three varieties which satisfy all the conditions.

Abstract:We study projective Type II degenerations of K3 surfaces polarised by a certain rank 18 lattice, where the central fibre consists of a pair of rational surfaces glued along a smooth elliptic curve. Given such a degeneration, one may construct other degenerations of the same kind by flopping curves on the central fibre, but the degenerations obtained from this process are not usually projective. We construct a series of examples which are all projective and which are all related by flopping single curves from one component of the central fibre to the other. The components of the central fibres obtained include weak del Pezzo surfaces of all possible degrees. This shows that projectivity need not impose any meaningful constraints on the surfaces that can arise as components in Type II degenerations.

Reductive quotients of klt singularities

Abstract:We prove that the quotient of a klt type singularity by a reductive group is of klt type. In particular, given a klt variety $X$ endowed with the action of a reductive group $G$ and admitting a quasi-projective good quotient $X\rightarrow X/\!/G$, we can find a boundary $B$ on $X/\!/G$ so that the pair $(X/\!/G,B)$ is klt. This applies for example to GIT-quotients of klt varieties. Our main result has consequences for complex spaces obtained as quotients of Hamiltonian Kähler $G$-manifolds, for collapsings of homogeneous vector bundles as introduced by Kempf, and for good moduli spaces of smooth Artin stacks. In particular, it implies that the good moduli space parametrizing $n$-dimensional K-polystable Fano manifolds of volume $v$ has klt type singularities. As a corresponding result regarding global geometry, we show that quotients of Mori Dream Spaces with klt Cox rings are Mori Dream Spaces with klt Cox ring. This in turn applies to show that projective GIT-quotients of varieties of Fano type are of Fano type; in particular, projective moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations are of Fano type.

Morphisms from a very general hypersurface

Abstract:Let $X$ be a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ in the projective $(n+1)$-space with $n \ge 3$, and $f: X \to Y$ a non-birational surjective morphism to a normal projective variety $Y$. We first prove that $Y$ is a klt Fano variety if ${\rm deg} \, f \ge C$ for some constant $C = C(n, d)$ depending only on $n$ and $d$. Next we prove an optimal upper bound ${\rm deg} \, f \le {\rm deg} \, X$ provided that $Y$ is factorial, ${\rm deg} \, f$ is prime and ${\rm deg} \, f \ge E(n)$ for some constant $E(n)$ (with $E(n) = n(n+1)$ when $Y$ is smooth). As a corollary, we show that $Y \cong {\mathbb P}^n$ under some conditions on $Y$ and ${\rm deg} \, f$.

Degeneration of families of projective hypersurfaces and Hodge conjecture

Abstract:We prove by induction on dimension the Hodge conjecture for smooth complex projective varieties. Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. Then $X$ is birational to a possibly singular projective hypersurface, hence to a smooth projective variety $E_0$ which is a component of a normal crossing divisor $E=\cup_{i=0}^rE_i\subset Y$ which is the singular fiber of a pencil $f:Y\to\mathbb A^1$ of smooth projective hypersurfaces. Using the smooth hypersurface case by a previous result of the autor, the nearby cycle functor on mixed Hodge module with rational de Rham factor, and the induction hypothesis, we prove that an Hodge class of $E_0$ is absolute Hodge, more precisely the locus of Hodge classes inside the algebraic vector bundle given the De Rham cohomology the rational deformation of $E_0$ is defined over $\mathbb Q$. By another previous result of the autor, we get the Hodge conjecture for $E_0$. By the induction hypothesis we also have the Hodge conjecture for $X$.

Abstract:We prove that every K3 surface with automorphism group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ admits an explicit birational model as a double sextic surface. This model is canonical for Picard number greater than 10. For Picard number greater than 9, the K3 surfaces in question possess a second birational model, in the form of a projective quartic hypersurface, generalizing the Inose quartic.

Abstract:We study the Bergman embeddings of degenerating families of Kähler-Einsten manifolds of negative curvature. In one special case, we show that we can construct orthonormal bases so that the induced Bergman embeddings converge to the Bergman embedding of the limit space together with bubbles.

Abstract:We introduce \emph{k-positive representations}, a large class of $\{1,\ldots,k\}$--Anosov surface group representations into PGL(E) that share many features with Hitchin representations, and we study their degenerations: unless they are Hitchin, they can be deformed to non-discrete representations, but any limit is at least (k-3)-positive and irreducible limits are (k-1)-positive. A major ingredient, of independent interest, is a general limit theorem for positively ratioed representations.

Abstract:Suppose that X X is a projective manifold whose tangent bundle T X T_X contains a locally free strictly nef subsheaf. We prove that X X is isomorphic to either a projective space or a projective bundle over a hyperbolic manifold of general type. Obstructions to semiorthogonal decompositions for singular projective varieties II: Representation theory

Abstract:We show that odd-dimensional projective varieties with tilting objects and only ADE-hypersurface singularities are nodal, i.e. they only have $A_1$-singularities. This is a very special case of more general obstructions to the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions for projective Gorenstein varieties. More precisely, for many isolated hypersurface singularities, we show that Kuznetsov-Shinder's categorical absorptions of singularities cannot contain tilting objects. The key idea is to compare singularity categories of projective varieties to singularity categories of finite-dimensional associative Gorenstein algebras. The former often contain special generators, called cluster-tilting objects, which typically have loops and $2$-cycles in their quivers. In contrast, quivers of cluster-tilting objects in the latter categories, can never have loops or $2$-cycles.

A toric degeneration of Kronecker moduli spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we show that there is a finite SAGBI basis of the coordinate ring of a Kronecker quiver moduli space, indexed by primitive semi-standard tableaux pairs. This induces a toric degeneration of the Kronecker moduli space to a normal toric variety, a generalization of the toric degeneration of the Grassmannian to the Gelfand--Cetlin polytope constructed by Gonciulea--Lakshmibai. The moment polytope of the degenerate toric variety can be described as the intersection of two Gelfand--Cetlin polytopes. We explain when this can be generalized to degenerations coming from matching fields.

Projectivity criteria for Kähler morphisms

Abstract:In this short note we prove two projectivity criteria for fibrations between mildly singular compact Kähler spaces. They are the relative versions of the celebrated criteria of Kodaira and Moishezon. As an application we obtain that the MRC fibration always has a model that is a projective morphism.

Abstract:K3 surfaces have been studied from many points of view, but the positivity of the cotangent bundle is not well understood. In this paper we explore the surprisingly rich geometry of the projectivised cotangent bundle of a very general polarised K3 surface $S$ of degree two. In particular, we describe the geometry of a surface $D_S \subset \mathbb{P}(\Omega_S)$ that plays a similar role to the surface of bitangents for a quartic in $\mathbb{P}^3$.

Abstract:We study HKT structures on nilpotent Lie groups and on associated nilmanifolds. We exhibit three weak HKT structures on $\R^8$ which are homogeneous with respect to extensions of Heisenberg type Lie groups. The corresponding hypercomplex structures are of a special kind, called abelian. We prove that on any 2-step nilpotent Lie group all invariant HKT structures arise from abelian hypercomplex structures. Furthermore, we use a correspondence between abelian hypercomplex structures and subspaces of ${\frak sp}(n)$ to produce continuous families of compact and noncompact of manifolds carrying non isometric HKT structures. Finally, geometrical properties of invariant HKT structures on 2-step nilpotent Lie groups are obtained.

Explicit desingularisation of Kummer surfaces in characteristic two via specialisation

Abstract:We study the birational geometry of the Kummer surfaces associated to the Jacobian varieties of genus two curves, with a particular focus on fields of characteristic two. In order to do so, we explicitly compute a projective embedding of the Jacobian of a general genus two curve and, from this, we construct its associated Kummer surface. This explicit construction produces a model for desingularised Kummer surfaces over any field of characteristic not two, and specialising these equations to characteristic two provides a model of a partial desingularisation. Adapting the classic description of the Picard lattice in terms of tropes, we also describe how to explicitly find completely desingularised models of Kummer surfaces whenever the $p$-rank is not zero. In the final section of this paper, we compute an example of a Kummer surface with everywhere good reduction over a quadratic number field, and draw connections between the models we computed and a criterion that determines when a Kummer surface has good reduction at two.

The Degeneracy Loci for Smooth Moduli of Sheaves

Abstract:Let S be a smooth projective surface over $\mathbb{C}$. We prove that, under certain technical assumptions, the degeneracy locus of the universal sheaf over the moduli space of stable sheaves is either empty or an irreducible Cohen-Macaulay variety of the expected dimension. We also provide a criterion for when the degeneracy locus is non-empty. This result generalizes the work of Bayer, Chen, and Jiang for the Hilbert scheme of points on surfaces. The above result is a special case of a general phenomenon: for a perfect complex of Tor-amplitude [0,1], the geometry of the degeneracy locus is closely related to the geometry of the derived Grassmannian. We analyze their birational geometry and relate it to the incidence varieties of derived Grassmannians. As a corollary, we prove a statement previously claimed by the author in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2408.06860" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.06860">arXiv:2408.06860</a>.

Abstract:We prove that for a locally stable family of klt singularities with constant local volume, the ideal sequences of the minimizing valuations for the normalized volume function form a family of ideals with flat cosupport, which induces a degeneration to a locally stable family of K-semistable log Fano cone singularities. Our proof is a family version of the method of C. Xu and Z. Zhuang proving finite generation by Kollár models and multiple degenerations.
