Abstract:Bifacial perovskite solar cells (PSCs) represent a transformative technology in photovoltaics, promising increased power production and lower costs compared to traditional monofacial devices. By leveraging the unique optoelectronic properties of perovskites, these cells can efficiently harness reflected and scattered light, boosting energy output and enhancing design options for applications such as building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs), floating solar installations, green farming, and more. Recent studies have demonstrated an exceptional bifacial PSCs power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.2% with bifaciality greater than 91%, which improves to 31.2% under a 0.5 albedo. However, this efficiency (under no albedo) is still significantly lower than that of monofacial single-junction PSCs, which have achieved a PCE of 26.1%. There are several challenges that need to be addressed to further boost bifacial PSCs performance. One significant issue is the limited carrier lifetimes, as defects in the perovskite material can lead to rapid recombination of charge carriers, reducing energy output. Additionally, surface recombination losses at the rear side of the cells can diminish efficiency when reflected light reaches the back but is not effectively harvested. Stability is another concern, as perovskite materials are sensitive to moisture and temperature fluctuations, which can lead to degradation over time. Furthermore, the efficiency of bifacial operation can vary significantly based on environmental conditions, particularly the albedo of the surface beneath the panels; low-albedo surfaces may not provide sufficient reflected light, resulting in underperformance. Lastly, scaling up the manufacturing of bifacial PSCs presents logistical challenges, requiring specialized equipment and processes to ensure uniformity, which can affect cost and availability. Addressing these challenges is crucial for advancing the development and adoption of bifacial single-junction PSCs.
