Abstract:The article deals with plastic and non-plastic sub-spaces $A$ of the real line ${\mathbb{R}}$ with the usual Euclidean metric $d$. It investigates non-expansive bijections, proves properties of such maps and demonstrates their relevance by hands of examples. Finally, it is shown that the plasticity property of a sub-space $A$ contains at least two complementary questions, a purely geometric and a topological one. Both contribute essential aspects to the plasticity property and get more critical in higher dimensions and more abstract metric spaces.

Abstract:We extend the result of B. Cascales at al. about expand-contract plasticity of the unit ball of strictly convex Banach space to those spaces whose unit ball is the union of all its finite-dimensional polyhedral extreme subsets. We also extend the definition of expand-contract plasticity to uniform spaces and generalize the theorem on expand-contract plasticity of totally bounded metric spaces to this new setting.

Linearization in incompatible elasticity for general ambient spaces

Abstract:Motivated by recent interest in elastic problems in which the target space is non-Euclidean, we study a limit where local rest distances within an elastic body are incompatible, yet close to, distances within the ambient space. Specifically, we obtain, via $\Gamma$-convergence, a limit elastic model for a sequence of elastic bodies $(M,g_\varepsilon)$ in an ambient space $(S,s)$, for Riemannian metrics $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$ such that $g_\varepsilon \to s$. Furthermore, we relate the minimum of the limit problem to a linearized curvature discrepancy between $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$, using recent results of Kupferman and Leder. This relation confirms a linearized version of a long-standing conjecture in elasticity regarding the relation between the elastic energy and the curvature of the underlying space. The main technical challenge, compared to other linearization results in elasticity, is obtaining the correct notion of displacement for manifold-valued configurations, using Sobolev truncations and parallel transport. We show that the associated compactness result is obtained if $(S,s)$ satisfies a quantitative rigidity property, analogous to the Friesecke--James--Müller rigidity estimate in Euclidean space, and show that this property holds when $(S,s)$ is a round sphere.

Extension of convex functions from a hyperplane to a half-space

Abstract:It is shown that a possibly infinite-valued proper lower semicontinuous convex function on ${\mathbb R}^n$ has an extension to a convex function on the half-space ${\mathbb R}^n\times[0,\infty)$ which is finite and smooth on the open half-space ${\mathbb R}^n\times(0,\infty)$. The result is applied to nonlinear elasticity, where it clarifies how the condition of polyconvexity of the free-energy density $\psi(Dy)$ is best expressed when $\psi(A)\to\infty$ as $\det A\to 0+$.

Abstract:We prove that for any $\ell_\infty$-sum $Z = \bigoplus_{i \in [n]} X_i$ of finitely many strictly convex Banach spaces $(X_i)_{i \in [n]}$, an extremeness preserving 1-Lipschitz bijection $f\colon B_Z \to B_Z$ is an isometry, by constraining the componentwise behavior of the inverse $g=f^{-1}$ with a theorem admitting a graph-theoretic interpretation. We also show that if $X, Y$ are Banach spaces, then a bijective 1-Lipschitz non-isometry of type $B_X \to B_Y$ can be used to construct a bijective 1-Lipschitz non-isometry of type $B_{X'} \to B_{X'}$ for some Banach space $X'$, and that a homeomorphic 1-Lipschitz non-isometry of type $B_X \to B_X$ restricts to a homeomorphic 1-Lipschitz non-isometry of type $B_S \to B_S$ for some separable subspace $S \leq X$.

Abstract:We introduce the class of variable anisotropic singular integral operators associated to a continuous multi-level ellipsoid cover of introduced by Dahmen et al. (Constr Approx 31:149–194, 2010). This is an extension of the classical isotropic singular integral operators on of arbitrary smoothness and their anisotropic analogues for general expansive matrices introduced by the first author Bownik (Mem Am Math Soc 164(781):1–122, 2003). We establish the boundedness of variable anisotropic singular integral operators T on the Hardy spaces with pointwise variable anisotropy , which were developed by Dekel et al. Abstract:In the early 1970's Eisenberg and Hedlund investigated relationships between expansivity and spectrum of operators on Banach spaces. In this paper we establish relationships between notions of expansivity and hypercyclicity, supercyclicity, Li–Yorke chaos and shadowing. In the case that the Banach space is c 0 or ℓ p ( 1 ≤ p < ∞ ), we give complete characterizations of weighted shifts which satisfy various notions of expansivity. We also establish new relationships between notions of expansivity and spectrum. Moreover, we study various notions of shadowing for operators on Banach spaces. In particular, we solve a basic problem in linear dynamics by proving the existence of nonhyperbolic invertible operators with the shadowing property. This contrasts with the expected results for nonlinear dynamics on compact manifolds, illuminating the richness of dynamics of infinite dimensional linear operators.

Darboux theory of integrability for real polynomial vector fields on the $n-$dimensional ellipsoid

Abstract:We extend to the $n$-dimensional ellipsoid contained in $\R^{n+1},$ the Darboux theory of integrability for polynomial vector fields in the $n$-dimensional sphere (Llibre et al., 2018). New results on the maximum number of invariant parallels and meridians of polynomial vector fields $\X$ on the invariant $n-$dimensional ellipsoid, as a function of its degree, are provided. Our results extend the known result on the upper bound for the number of invariant hyperplanes that a polynomial vector field $\Y$ in $\R^n$ can have in function of the degree of $\Y$.

Enveloping Ellis semigroups as compactifications of transformations groups

Abstract:The notion of a proper Ellis semigroup compactification is introduced. Ellis's functional approach shows how to obtain them from totally bounded equiuniformities on a phase space $X$ when the acting group $G$ is with the topology of pointwise convergence and the $G$-space $(G, X, \curvearrowright)$ is $G$-Tychonoff. The correspondence between proper Ellis semigroup compactifications of a topological group and special totally bounded equiuniformities (called Ellis equiuniformities) on a topological group is established. The Ellis equiuniformity on a topological transformation group $G$ from the maximal equiuniformity on a phase space $G/H$ in the case of its uniformly equicontinuous action is compared with Roelcke uniformity on $G$. Proper Ellis semigroup compactifications are described for groups $S\,(X)$ (the permutation group of a discrete space $X$) and $Aut\,(X)$ (automorphism group of an ultrahomogeneous chain $X$) in the permutation topology. It is shown that this approach can be applied to the unitary group of a Hilbert space.

Abstract:We show that the symmetric injective tensor product space $\hat{\otimes}_{n,s,\epsilon}E$ is not complex strictly convex if E is a complex Banach space of $\dim E \ge 2$ and if $n\ge 2$ holds. It is also reproved that $\ell_\infty$ is finitely represented in $\hat{\otimes}_{n,s,\epsilon}E$ if E is infinite dimensional and if $n\ge 2$ holds, which was proved in the other way by Dineen.

Abstract:Let $X$ and $Y$ be complex Banach spaces with $B_X$ denoting the open unit ball of $X.$ This paper studies various aspects of the {\em holomorphic Lipschitz space} $\mathcal HL_0(B_X,Y)$, endowed with the Lipschitz norm. This space is the intersection of the spaces, $\operatorname{Lip}_0(B_X,Y)$ of Lipschitz mappings and $\mathcal H^\infty(B_X,Y)$ of bounded holomorphic mappings, from $B_X$ to $Y$. Thanks to the Dixmier-Ng theorem, $\mathcal HL_0(B_X, \mathbb C)$ is indeed a dual space, whose predual $\mathcal G_0(B_X)$ shares linearization properties with both the Lipschitz-free space and Dineen-Mujica predual of $\mathcal H^\infty(B_X)$. We explore the similarities and differences between these spaces, and combine techniques to study the properties of the space of holomorphic Lipschitz functions. In particular, we get that $\mathcal G_0(B_X)$ contains a 1-complemented subspace isometric to $X$ and that $\mathcal G_0(X)$ has the (metric) approximation property whenever $X$ has it. We also analyze when $\mathcal G_0(B_X)$ is a subspace of $\mathcal G_0(B_Y)$, and we obtain an analogous to Godefroy's characterization of functionals with a unique norm preserving extension to the holomorphic Lipschitz context.

Geometric rigidity on Sobolev spaces with variable exponent and applications

Abstract:We present extensions of rigidity estimates and of Korn's inequality to the setting of (mixed) variable exponents growth. The proof techniques, based on a classical covering argument, rely on the log-Hölder continuity of the exponent to get uniform regularity estimates on each cell of the cover, and on an extension result à la Nitsche in Sobolev spaces with variable exponents. As an application, by means of $\Gamma$-convergence we perform a passage from nonlinear to linearized elasticity under variable subquadratic energy growth far from the energy well.

Abstract:The Laplace-Beltrami operator on (the surface of) a triaxial ellipsoid admits a sequence of real eigenvalues diverging to plus infinity. By introducing ellipsoidal coordinates, this eigenvalue problem for a partial differential operator is reduced to a two-parameter regular Sturm-Liouville problem involving ordinary differential operators. This two-parameter eigenvalue problem has two families of eigencurves whose intersection points determine the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Eigenvalues are approximated numerically through eigenvalues of generalized matrix eigenvalue problems. Ellipsoids close to spheres are studied employing Lamé polynomials.

Abstract:This work introduces operator space analogues of the Separable Extension Property (SEP) for Banach spaces; the Complete Separable Extension Property (CSEP) and the Complete Separable Complemention Property (CSCP). The results use the technique of a new proof of Sobczyk's Theorem, which also yields new results for the SEP in the non-separable situation, e.g., $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty Z_n)_{c_0}$ has the $(2+\ep)$-SEP for all $\ep>0$ if $Z_1,Z_2,...$ have the 1-SEP; in particular, $c_0 (\ell^\infty)$ has the SEP. It is proved that e.g., $c_0(\bR\oplus\bC)$ has the CSEP (where $\bR$, $\bC$ denote Row, Column space respectively) as a consequence of the general principle: if $Z_1,Z_2,...$ is a uniformly exact sequence of injective operator spaces, then $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty Z_n)_{c_0}$ has the CSEP. Similarly, e.g., $\bK_0 \defeq (\oplus_{n=1}^\infty M_n)_{c_0}$ has the CSCP, due to the general principle: $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty Z_n)_{c_0}$ has the CSCP if $Z_1,Z_2,...$ are injective separable operator spaces. Further structural results are obtained for these properties, and several open problems and conjectures are discussed.

Abstract:In odd dimensions, we prove a scalar curvature rigidity for parabolic convex polytopes in hyperbolic space enclosed by linear planes in the Poincare upper half-space model and convex with respect to the conformally related flat metric. Our method is based on spinor techniques and relies on the recent smoothing constructions of Brendle-Wang. We also prove a Llarull type rigidity for bounded smooth parabolic convex domains and a dihedral rigidity for polytopal initial data sets with dominant energy conditions.

Abstract:The exploration of shape metamorphism, surface reconstruction, and image interpolation raises fundamental inquiries concerning the $C^1$ and higher-order regularity of $\infty$-harmonic potentials -- a specialized category of $\infty$-harmonic functions. Additionally, it prompts questions regarding their corresponding approximations using $p$-harmonic potentials. It is worth noting that establishing $C^1$ and higher-order regularity for $\infty$-harmonic functions remains a central concern within the realm of $\infty$-Laplace equations and $L^\infty$-variational problems. In this study, we investigate the regularity properties from $p$-harmonic potentials to $\infty$-harmonic potentials within arbitrary convex ring domains $\Omega=\Omega_0\backslash \overline \Omega_1$ in $\mathbb R^n$. Here $\Omega_0$ is a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb R^n$ and $\overline\Omega_1\subset \Omega_0$ is a compact convex set. We prove the interior $C^1$ and some Sobolev regularity for $\infty$-harmonic potentials.

On singular behaviour in a plane linear elastostatics problem

Abstract:A vector field similar to those separately introduced by Artstein and Dafermos is constructed from the tangent to a monotone increasing one-parameter family of non-concentric circles that touch at the common point of intersection taken as the origin. The circles define and space-fill a lens shaped region $\Omega$ whose outer and inner boundaries are the greatest and least circles. The double cusp at the origin creates a geometric singularity at which the vector field is indeterminate and has non-unique limiting behaviour. A semi-inverse method that involves the Airy stress function then shows that the vector field corresponds to the displacement vector field for a linear plane compressible non-homogeneous isotropic elastostatic equilibrium problem in $\Omega$ whose boundaries are rigidly rotated relative to each other, possibly causing rupture or tearing at the origin. A sequence of solutions is found for which not only are the Lamé parameters strongly-elliptic, but the non-unique limiting behaviour of the displacement is preserved. Other properties of the vector field are also established.

Abstract:The existence of a rigged Hilbert space whose extreme spaces are, respectively, the projective and the inductive limit of a directed contractive family of Hilbert spaces is investigated. It is proved that, when it exists, this rigged Hilbert space is the same as the canonical rigged Hilbert space associated to a family of closable operators in the central Hilbert space.
