Abstract:Let either $GL(E)\times SO(F)$ or $GL(E)\times Sp(F)$ act naturally on the space of matrices $E\otimes F$. There are only finitely many orbits, and the orbit closures are orthogonal and symplectic generalizations of determinantal varieties, which can be described similarly using rank conditions. In this paper, we study the singularities of these varieties and describe their defining equations. We prove that in the symplectic case, the orbit closures are normal with good filtrations, and in characteristic $0$ have rational singularities. In the orthogonal case we show that most orbit closures will have the same properties, and determine precisely the exceptions to this.

Abstract:In this note we propose the generalization of the notion of a holomorphic contact structure on a manifold (smooth variety) to varieties with rational singularities and prove basic properties of such objects. Natural examples of singular contact varieties come from the theory of nilpotent orbits: every projectivization of the closure of a nilpotent orbit in a semisimple Lie algebra satisfies our definition after normalization. We show the correspondence between symplectic varieties with the structure of a $\mathbb{C}^*$-bundle and the contact ones along with the existence of the stratification à la Kaledin. In the projective case we demonstrate the equivalence between crepant and contact resolutions of singularities, show the uniruledness and give a full classification of projective contact varieties in dimension 3.

Singular algebraic curves and infinite symplectic staircases

Abstract:We show that the infinite staircases which arise in the ellipsoid embedding functions of rigid del Pezzo surfaces can be entirely explained in terms of rational sesquicuspidal symplectic curves. Moreover, we show that these curves can all be realized algebraically, giving various new families of algebraic curves with one cusp singularity. Our main techniques are (i) a generalized Orevkov twist, and (ii) the interplay between algebraic $\Q$-Gorenstein smoothings and symplectic almost toric fibrations. Along the way we develop various methods for constructing singular algebraic (and hence symplectic) curves which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We strongly believe that in order to prove two important geometrical pro\-blems in convexity, namely, the G. Bianchi and P. Gruber's Conjecture \cite{bigru} and the J. A. Barker and D. G. Larman's Conjecture \cite{Barker}, it is necessary obtain new characteristic properties of the ellipsoid, which involves the notions defined in such problems. In this work we present a series of results which intent to be a progress in such direction: Let $L,K\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be convex bodies, $n\geq 3$, and $L$ be a subset in the interior of $K$. Then each of the following conditions i), ii) and iii) implies that $L$ is an ellipsoid.

Abstract:In a geometrically non-linear Cosserat model for micro-polar elastic solids, we prove that critical points of the Cosserat energy functional with an arbitrary large (finite) number of singularities do exist, whereas Cosserat energy minimizers are known to be locally Hölder continuous. To reach that goal, we first develop a technique to insert dipole pairs of singularities into smooth maps while controlling the amount of Cosserat energy needed to do so. We then use this method to force an arbitrary number of singular points into (weak) Cosserat-elastic solids by prescribing smooth boundary data. The boundary data themselves are given in such a way, that they contain no topological obstruction to regularity. Throughout this paper, we often exploit connections between harmonic maps and Cosserat-elastic solids, so that we are able to adapt and incorporate ideas of R. Hardt and F.-H. Lin for harmonic maps with singularities, as well as of F. Béthuel for dipole pairs of singularities.

Abstract:We study geometric properties of linear strata of uni-singular curves. The singularities of closures of the strata are resolved and the resolutions are represent as projective bundles. This enables to study their geometry. In particular we calculate the Picard groups of the strata and the intersection rings of the closures of the strata. The rational equivalence classes of some geometric cycles on the strata are calculated. As an auxiliary problem we discuss the collision of two singular points, restrictions on possible resulting singularity types and solve the collision problem in several cases. Then we present some cases of enumeration of curves with two singular points, one of them being a node.

Obstructions to semiorthogonal decompositions for singular projective varieties II: Representation theory

Abstract:We show that odd-dimensional projective varieties with tilting objects and only ADE-hypersurface singularities are nodal, i.e. they only have $A_1$-singularities. This is a very special case of more general obstructions to the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions for projective Gorenstein varieties. More precisely, for many isolated hypersurface singularities, we show that Kuznetsov-Shinder's categorical absorptions of singularities cannot contain tilting objects. The key idea is to compare singularity categories of projective varieties to singularity categories of finite-dimensional associative Gorenstein algebras. The former often contain special generators, called cluster-tilting objects, which typically have loops and $2$-cycles in their quivers. In contrast, quivers of cluster-tilting objects in the latter categories, can never have loops or $2$-cycles.

Abstract:A smooth affine minimal surface with indefinite metric can be obtained from a pair of smooth non-intersecting spatial curves by Lelieuvre's formulas. These surfaces may present singularities, which are generically cuspidal edges and swallowtails. By discretizing the initial curves, one can obtain by the discrete Lelieuvre's formulas a discrete affine minimal surface with indefinite metric. The aim of this paper is to define the singular edges and vertices of the corresponding discrete asymptotic net in such a way that the most relevant properties of the singular set of the smooth version remain valid.

Abstract:Given a closed symplectic manifold, we construct invariants which count (a) closed rational pseudoholomorphic curves with prescribed cusp singularities and (b) punctured rational pseudoholomorphic curves with ellipsoidal negative ends. We prove an explicit equivalence between these two frameworks, which in particular gives a new geometric interpretation of various counts in symplectic field theory. We show that these invariants encode important information about singular symplectic curves and stable symplectic embedding obstructions. We also prove a correspondence theorem between rigid unicuspidal curves and perfect exceptional classes, which we illustrate by classifying rigid unicuspidal (symplectic or algebraic) curves in the first Hirzebruch surface.

Abstract:We study complex plane projective sextic curves with simple singularities up to equisingular deformations. It is shown that two such curves are deformation equivalent if and only if the corresponding pairs are diffeomorphic. A way to enumerate all deformation classes is outlined, and a few examples are considered, including classical Zariski pairs.

Abstract:By establishing some differential geometry theory on the 1-lightlike surfaces, we show several geometric properties of the 1-lightlike surfaces which are completely different from non-lightlike surfaces. Based on these theories, we consider the singularities of the 1-lightlike surfaces in semi- Euclidean 4-space with index two as an application of the theory of Legendrian singularities. We characterize the singularities of the 1-lightlike focal hypersurfaces and describe the contacts between the 1-lightlike surface and the anti de Sitter 3-sphere at singular points by employing Montaldi's theory. In addition, we also discuss the detailed differential geometric properties of the 1-lightlike focal hypersurfaces in semi-Euclidean 4-space with index 2. Abstract:This work presents a range of triangulated characterizations for important classes of singularities such as derived splinters, rational singularities, and Du Bois singularities. An invariant called 'level' in a triangulated category can be used to measure the failure of a variety to have a prescribed singularity type. We provide explicit computations of this invariant for reduced Nagata schemes of Krull dimension one and for affine cones over smooth projective hypersurfaces. Furthermore, these computations are utilized to produce upper bounds for Rouquier dimension on the respective bounded derived categories.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. We construct an extension of the classical de Rham theory on spaces with isolated singularities, that we call intersection de Rham theory. The construction is based on the definition of some closed extension of the exterior differentiation operator on (distributional) forms, based on the introduction of some boundary conditions at the singular point. We prove that the cohomology of the associated Hilbert complex, that we call intersection de Rham complex, is naturally isomorphic to the combinatorial intersection cohomology of Goresky and MacPherson.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

Abstract:Building on the seminal work of Arkani-Hamed, He, Salvatori and Thomas (AHST), we explore the positive geometry encoding one loop scattering amplitude for quartic scalar interactions. We define a new class of combinatorial polytopes that we call pseudo-accordiohedra whose poset structures are associated to singularities of the one loop integrand associated to scalar quartic interactions. Pseudo-accordiohedra parametrize a family of projective forms on the abstract kinematic space defined by AHST and restriction of these forms to the type-D associahedra can be associated to one-loop integrands for quartic interactions. The restriction (of the projective form) can also be thought of as a canonical top form on certain geometric realisations of pseudo-accordiohedra. Our work explores a large class of geometric realisations of the type-D associahedra which include all the AHST realisations. These realisations are based on the pseudo-triangulation model for type-D cluster algebras discovered by Ceballos and Pilaud.
Tilting objects in singularity categories of toric Gorenstein varieties

Abstract:We study certain toric Gorenstein varieties with isolated singularities which are the quotient spaces of generic unimodular representations by the one-dimensional torus, or by the product of the one-dimensional torus with a finite abelian group. Based on the works of Špenko and Van den Bergh [Invent. Math. 210 (2017), no. 1, 3-67] and Mori and Ueyama [Adv. Math. 297 (2016), 54-92], we show that the singularity categories of these varieties admit tilting objects, and hence are triangle equivalent to the perfect categories of some finite dimensional algebras.

Abstract:Let p be a normal singularity of the 2-dimensional Stein space V . Let π : M → V be a resolution of V such that the irreducible components Ai, 1 ≤ i ≤ n, of A = π−1(p) are nonsingular and have only normal crossings. Associated to A is a weighted dual graph Γ (e.g. see [Hi] or [La1]) which, along with the genera of the Ai, fully describes the topology and differentiable structure of A and the topological and differentiable nature of the embedding of A in M . Singularities of focal sets of pseudo-spherical framed immersions in the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space

Abstract:We introduce pseudo-spherical non-null framed curves in the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime and establish the existence and uniqueness of these curves. We then give moving frames along pseudo-spherical framed curves, which are well-defined even at singular points of the curve. These moving frames enable us to define evolutes and focal surfaces of pseudo-spherical framed immersions. We investigate the singularity properties of these evolutes and focal surfaces. We then reveal that the evolute of a pseudo-spherical framed immersion is the set of singular points of its focal surface. We also interpret evolutes and focal surfaces as the discriminant and the secondary discriminant sets of certain height functions, which allows us to explain evolutes and focal surfaces as wavefronts from the viewpoint of Legendrian singularity theory. Examples are provided to flesh out our results, and we use the hyperbolic Hopf map to visualize these examples.

Axiumbilic Singular Points on Surfaces Immersed in R4 and their Generic Bifurcations

Abstract:Here are described the axiumbilic points that appear in generic one parameter families of surfaces immersed in R4. At these points the ellipse of curvature of the immersion, Little, Garcia - Sotomayor has equal axes. A review is made on the basic preliminaries on axial curvature lines and the associated axiumbilic points which are the singularities of the fields of principal, mean axial lines}, axial crossings and the quartic differential equation defining them. The Lie-Cartan vector field suspension of the quartic differential equation, giving a line field tangent to the Lie-Cartan surface (in the projective bundle of the source immersed surface which quadruply covers a punctured neighborhood of the axiumbilic point) whose integral curves project regularly on the lines of axial curvature. In an appropriate Monge chart the configurations of the generic axiumbilic points, denoted by E3, E4 and E5, are obtained by studying the integral curves of the Lie-Cartan vector field. Elementary bifurcation theory is applied to the study of the transition and elimination between the axiumbilic generic points. The two generic patterns E^1_{34} and E^1_{45} are analysed and their axial configurations are explained in terms of their qualitative changes (bifurcations) with one parameter in the space of immersions, focusing on their close analogy with the saddle-node bifurcation for vector fields in the plane . This work can be regarded as a partial extension to R4 of the umbilic bifurcations in Garcia - Gutierrez - Sotomayor for surfaces in R3. With less restrictive differentiability hypotheses and distinct methodology it has points of contact with the results of Gutierrez - Guinez - Castaneda.
