Abstract:We consider a queueing system with $n$ parallel queues operating according to the so-called "supermarket model" in which arriving customers join the shortest of $d$ randomly selected queues. Assuming rate $n\lambda_{n}$ Poisson arrivals and rate $1$ exponentially distributed service times, we consider this model in the heavy traffic regime, described by $\lambda_{n}\uparrow 1$ as $n\to\infty$. We give a simple expectation argument establishing that majority of queues have steady state length at least $\log_d(1-\lambda_{n})^{-1} - O(1)$ with probability approaching one as $n\rightarrow\infty$, implying the same for the steady state delay of a typical customer. Our main result concerns the detailed behavior of queues with length smaller than $\log_d(1-\lambda_{n})^{-1}-O(1)$. Assuming $\lambda_{n}$ converges to $1$ at rate at most $\sqrt{n}$, we show that the dynamics of such queues does not follow a diffusion process, as is typical for queueing systems in heavy traffic, but is described instead by a deterministic infinite system of linear differential equations, after an appropriate rescaling. The unique fixed point solution of this system is shown explicitly to be of the form $\pi_{1}(d^{i}-1)/(d-1), i\ge 1$, which we conjecture describes the steady state behavior of the queue lengths after the same rescaling. Our result is obtained by combination of several technical ideas including establishing the existence and uniqueness of an associated infinite dimensional system of non-linear integral equations and adopting an appropriate stopped process as an intermediate step.

Abstract:Setting traffic light signals is a classical topic in traffic engineering, and important in heavy-traffic conditions when green times become scarce and longer queues are inevitably formed. For the fixed-cycle traffic-light queue, an elementary queueing model for one traffic light with cyclic signaling, we obtain heavy-traffic limits that capture the long-term queue behavior. We leverage the limit theorems to obtain sharp performance approximations for one queue in heavy traffic. We also consider optimization problems that aim for optimal division of green times among multiple conflicting traffic streams. We show that inserting heavy-traffic approximations leads to tractable optimization problems and close-to-optimal signal prescriptions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider hashing with linear probing for a hashing table with m places, n items (n < m), and l = m<n empty places. For a non computer science-minded reader, we shall use the metaphore of n cars parking on m places: each car chooses a place at random, and if this place k is occupied, the car tries successively k+1, k+2, ... until it finds an empty place (with the convention that place m+1 is actually place 1). Pittel [42] proves that when l/m goes to some positive limit a < 1, the size of the largest block of consecutive cars is O(log m). In this paper we examine at which level for n a phase transition occurs for the largest block of consecutive cars between o(m) and O(m). The intermediate case reveals an interesting behaviour of sizes of blocks, related to the standard additive coalescent in the same way as the sizes of connected components of the random graph are related to the multiplicative coalescent.

Abstract:Traffic-light modelling is a complex task, because many factors have to be taken into account. In particular, capturing all traffic flows in one model can significantly complicate the model. Therefore, several realistic features are typically omitted from most models. We introduce a mechanism to include pedestrians and focus on situations where they may block vehicles that get a green light simultaneously. More specifically, we consider a generalization of the Fixed-Cycle Traffic-Light (FCTL) queue. Our framework allows us to model situations where (part of the) vehicles are blocked, e.g. by pedestrians that block turning traffic and where several vehicles might depart simultaneously, e.g. in case of multiple lanes receiving a green light simultaneously. We rely on probability generating function and complex analysis techniques which are also used to study the regular FCTL queue. We study the effect of several parameters on performance measures such as the mean delay and queue-length distribution.

Abstract:In Internet environment, traffic flow to a link is typically modeled by superposition of ON/OFF based sources. During each ON-period for a particular source, packets arrive according to a Poisson process and packet sizes (hence service times) can be generally distributed. In this paper, we establish heavy traffic limit theorems to provide suitable approximations for the system under first-in first-out (FIFO) and work conserving service discipline, which state that, when the lengths of both ON- and OFF-periods are lightly tailed, the sequences of the scaled queue length and workload processes converge weakly to short-range dependent reflecting Gaussian processes, and when the lengths of ON- and/or OFF periods are heavily tailed with infinite variance, the sequences converge weakly to either reflecting fractional Brownian motions (FBMs) or certain type of long-range dependent reflecting Gaussian processes depending on the choice of scaling as the number of superposed sources tends to infinity. Moreover, the sequences exhibit a state space collapse-like property when the number of sources is large enough, which is a kind of extension of the well-known Little's law for M/M/1 queueing system. Theory to justify the approximations is based on appropriate heavy traffic conditions which essentially mean that the service rate closely approaches the arrival rate when the number of input sources tends to infinity.

Heavy Traffic Scaling Limits for Shortest Remaining Processing Time Queues with Light Tailed Processing Time Distributions

Abstract:We prove a heavy traffic scaling limit for a shortest remaining processing time queue. We are interested in the case where the processing time distribution has a tail that decays rapidly, i.e., has light tails. In particular, we revisit the work in Puha (2015), which shows that the diffusion scaled queue length process multiplied by a processing time distribution dependent factor that tends to infinity converges to a nontrivial reflecting Brownian motion, under the condition that this distribution dependent factor is slowly varying and obeys a certain rate of convergence condition. Here, we prove that the rate of convergence condition is not needed and the result holds more generally. We further show convergence of a sequence of nonstandardly scaled measure valued state descriptors to a point mass at one such that the total mass fluctuates randomly in accordance with the diffusion limit for the workload process. This is a sharp concentration result which shows that, under this nonstandard scaling, there are a very small number of tasks in the system and the remaining work for each such task is large and of the same order of magnitude as that of other tasks. This is due to the prioritization of the task with the least remaining work, and is in contrast to the case of heavy tailed processing times studied in Banerjee, Budhiraja, and Puha (2022). There it is shown that, while there is some concentration, the remaining times of the very small number of tasks in the system spread out over the nonnegative real line according to a random profile under this nonstandard scaling. Thus, this work completes the description of the two fundamentally different behaviors of SPRT by characterizing it in the case of light tailed processing time distributions.

Abstract:We consider a system of ordered cars moving in $\R$ from right to left. Each car is represented by a point in $\R$; two or more cars can occupy the same point but cannot overpass. Cars have two possible velocities: either 0 or 1. An unblocked car needs an exponential random time of mean 1 to pass from speed 0 to speed 1 (\emph{slow-to-start}). Car $i$, say, travels at speed 1 until it (possibly) hits the stopped car $i-1$ to its left. After the departure of car $i-1$, car $i$ waits an exponential random time to change its speed to 1, travels at this speed until it hits again stopped car $i-1$ and so on. Initially cars are distributed in $\R$ according to a Poisson process of parameter $\lambda<1$. We show that every car will be stopped only a finite number of times and that the final relative car positions is again a Poisson process with parameter $\lambda$. To do that, we relate the trajectories of the cars to a $M/M/1$ stationary queue as follows. Space in the traffic model is time for the queue. The initial positions of the cars coincide with the arrival process of the queue and the final relative car positions match the departure process of the queue.

Abstract:The steady development of motor vehicle technology will enable cars of the near future to assume an ever increasing role in the decision making and control of the vehicle itself. In the foreseeable future, cars will have the ability to communicate with one another in order to better coordinate their motion. This motivates a number of interesting algorithmic problems. One of the most challenging aspects of traffic coordination involves traffic intersections. In this paper we consider two formulations of a simple and fundamental geometric optimization problem involving coordinating the motion of vehicles through an intersection. We are given a set of $n$ vehicles in the plane, each modeled as a unit length line segment that moves monotonically, either horizontally or vertically, subject to a maximum speed limit. Each vehicle is described by a start and goal position and a start time and deadline. The question is whether, subject to the speed limit, there exists a collision-free motion plan so that each vehicle travels from its start position to its goal position prior to its deadline. We present three results. We begin by showing that this problem is NP-complete with a reduction from 3-SAT. Second, we consider a constrained version in which cars traveling horizontally can alter their speeds while cars traveling vertically cannot. We present a simple algorithm that solves this problem in $O(n \log n)$ time. Finally, we provide a solution to the discrete version of the problem and prove its asymptotic optimality in terms of the maximum delay of a vehicle.

Multi-component Matching Queues in Heavy Traffic

Abstract:We consider multi-component matching systems in heavy traffic consisting of $K\geq 2$ distinct perishable components which arrive randomly over time at high speed at the assemble-to-order station, and they wait in their respective queues according to their categories until matched or their ``patience" runs out. An instantaneous match occurs if all categories are available, and the matched components leave immediately thereafter. For a sequence of such systems parameterized by $n$, we establish an explicit definition for the matching completion process, and when all the arrival rates tend to infinity in concert as $n\to\infty$, we obtain a heavy traffic limit of the appropriately scaled queue lengths under mild assumptions, which is characterized by a coupled stochastic integral equation with a scalar-valued non-linear term. We demonstrate some crucial properties for certain coupled equations and exhibit numerical case studies. Moreover, we establish an asymptotic Little's law, which reveals the asymptotic relationship between the queue length and its virtual waiting time. Motivated by the cost structure of blood bank drives, we formulate an infinite-horizon discounted cost functional and show that the expected value of this cost functional for the nth system converges to that of the heavy traffic limiting process as n tends to infinity.

Abstract:We study a queueing system with Poisson arrivals on a bus line indexed by integers. The buses move at constant speed to the right and the time of service per customer getting on the bus is fixed. The customers arriving at station i wait for a bus if this latter is less than d\_i stations before, where d\_i is non-decreasing. We determine the asymptotic behavior of a single bus and when two buses eventually coalesce almost surely by coupling arguments. Three regimes appear, two of which leading to a.s. coalescing of the buses.The approach relies on a connection with aged structured branching processes with immigration and varying environment. We need to prove a Kesten Stigum type theorem, i.e. the a.s. convergence of the successive size of the branching process normalized by its mean. The technics developed combines a spine approach for multitype branching process in varying environment and geometric ergodicity along the spine to control the increments of the normalized process.

Abstract:Consider a queuing system with $K$ parallel queues in which the server for each queue processes jobs at rate $n$ and the total arrival rate to the system is $nK-\upsilon \sqrt{n}$ where $\upsilon \in (0, \infty)$ and $n$ is large. We study rank-based routing policies in which $O(\sqrt{n})$ of the incoming jobs are routed to servers with probabilities depending on their ranked queue length and the remaining jobs are routed uniformly at random. A particular case, referred to as the marginal join-the-shortest-queue (MJSQ) policy, is one in which the $O(\sqrt{n})$ jobs are routed using the join-the-shortest-queue (JSQ) policy. Our first result provides a heavy traffic approximation theorem for such queuing systems. It turns out that, unlike the JSQ system, there is no state space collapse in the setting of MJSQ (and for the more general rank-based routing schemes) and one obtains a novel diffusion limit which is the constrained analogue of the well studied Atlas model (and other rank-based diffusions) arising from mathematical finance. Next, we prove an interchange of limits result which shows that the steady state of the queuing system is well approximated by that of the limiting diffusion, given explicitly in terms of product laws of Exponential random variables. Using these results, we compute the time asymptotic workload in the heavy traffic limit for the MJSQ system. We find the striking result that although in going from JSQ to MJSQ the communication cost is reduced by a factor of $\sqrt{n}$, the asymptotic workload increases only by a constant factor which can be made arbitrarily close to one by increasing a MJSQ parameter. When the system is overloaded ($\upsilon<0$) we show that although the $K$-dimensional MJSQ system is unstable, the steady state difference between the maximum and minimum queue lengths stays bounded in probability (in the heavy traffic parameter $n$).

Abstract:This paper studies the heavy-traffic joint distribution of queue lengths in two stochastic processing networks (SPN), viz., an input-queued switch operating under the MaxWeight scheduling policy and a two-server parallel server system called the $\mathcal{N}$-system. These two systems serve as representatives of SPNs that do not satisfy the so-called Complete Resource Pooling (CRP) condition, and consequently exhibit a multidimensional State Space Collapse (SSC). Except in special cases, only mean queue lengths of such non-CRP systems is known in the literature. In this paper, we develop the Transform method to study the joint distribution of queue lengths in non-CRP systems. The key challenge is in solving an implicit functional equation involving the Laplace transform of the heavy-traffic limiting distribution. For the $\mathcal{N}$-system and a special case of an input-queued switch involving only three queues, we obtain the exact limiting heavy-traffic joint distribution in terms of a linear combination of two iid exponentials. For the general $n\times n$ input-queued switch that has $n^2$ queues, under a conjecture on uniqueness of the solution of the functional equation, we obtain an exact joint distribution of the heavy-traffic limiting queue-lengths in terms of a non-linear combination of $2n$ iid exponentials.

Self-Similar Characteristics in Queue Length Dynamics: Insights from Adaptive Signalized Corridor

Abstract:Self-similarity, a fractal characteristic of traffic flow dynamics, is widely recognized in transportation engineering and physics. However, its practical application in real-world traffic scenarios remains limited. Conversely, the traffic flow dynamics at adaptive signalized intersections still need to be fully understood. This paper addresses this gap by analyzing the queue length time series from an adaptive signalized corridor and characterizing its self-similarity. The findings uncover a $1/f$ structure in the power spectrum of queue lengths, indicative of self-similarity. Furthermore, the paper estimates local scaling exponents $(\alpha)$, a measure of self-similarity computed via detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), and identifies a positive correlation with congestion patterns. Additionally, the study examines the fractal dynamics of queue length through the evolution of scaling exponent. As a result, the paper offers new insights into the queue length dynamics of signalized intersections, which might help better understand the impact of adaptivity within the system.

Abstract:Based on numerical simulations of a three-phase traffic flow model, a probabilistic theory of traffic at the light signal is developed. We have found that very complex spatiotemporal self-organized phenomena determine features of city traffic. We have revealed that the breakdown of {\it green wave} in a city is initiated by the emergence of a moving synchronized flow pattern (MSP) within the green wave. It turns out that a sequence of F$\rightarrow$S$\rightarrow$J transitions (F -- free flow, S -- synchronized flow, J -- moving queue) lead to traffic breakdown at the light signal. Both spontaneous and induced breakdowns of the green wave have been found. From a study of a variety of scenarios for arrival traffic, we have found that there are the infinite number of capacities of traffic at the light signal, which are in a capacity range between a minimum capacity and maximum capacity; each of the capacities gives a flow rate at which under-saturated traffic is in a metastable state with respect to the transition to over-saturated traffic. The maximum capacity depends crucially on a time-dependence of the flow rate: The larger the number of vehicles that arrive the light signal during the green phase, the larger the maximum capacity.

Abstract:As a dynamical complex system, traffic is characterized by a transition from free flow to congestions, which is mostly studied in highways. However, despite its importance in developing congestion mitigation strategies, the understanding of this common traffic phenomenon in a city-scale is still missing. An open question is how the traffic in the network collapses from a global efficient traffic to isolated local flows in small clusters, i.e. the question of traffic percolation. Here we study the traffic percolation properties on a lattice by simulation of an agent-based model for traffic. A critical traffic volume in this model distinguishes the free-state from congested state of traffic. Our results show that the threshold of traffic percolation decreases with increasing traffic volume and reaches a minimum value at the critical traffic volume. We show that this minimal threshold is the result of longest spatial correlation between traffic flows at the critical traffic volume. These findings may help to develop congestion mitigation strategies in a network view.

Abstract:In this paper we study a traffic intersection with vehicle-actuated traffic signal control. Traffic lights stay green until all lanes within a group are emptied. Assuming general renewal arrival processes, we derive exact limiting distributions of the delays under Heavy Traffic (HT) conditions. Furthermore, we derive the Light Traffic (LT) limit of the mean delays for intersections with Poisson arrivals, and develop a heuristic adaptation of this limit to capture the LT behaviour for other interarrival-time distributions. We combine the LT and HT results to develop closed-form approximations for the mean delays of vehicles in each lane. These closed-form approximations are quite accurate, very insightful and simple to implement.

Heavy Traffic Queue Length Behaviour in a Switch under Markovian Arrivals

Abstract:This paper studies the input queued switch operating under the MaxWeight algorithm when the arrivals are according to a Markovian process. We exactly characterize the heavy-traffic scaled mean sum queue length in the heavy-traffic limit, and shows that it is within a factor of less than $2$ from a universal lower bound. Moreover, we obtain lower and upper bounds, that are applicable in all traffic regimes, and they become tight in the heavy-traffic regime. The paper obtains these results by generalizing the drift method recently developed for the case of i.i.d. arrivals, to the case of Markovian arrivals. The paper illustrates this generalization by first obtaining the heavy-traffic mean queue length and its distribution in a single server queue under Markovian arrivals and then applying it to the case of input queued switch. The key idea is to exploit the geometric mixing of finite-state Markov chains, and to work with a time horizon that is picked so that the error due to mixing depends on the heavy-traffic parameter.
