Abstract:Serving two-way traffic in a single-way path is needed in some circumstances. When traffic demands are low, vehicles in two opposing directions may share a single-way path without much problem. With the demands increasing, however, the possibility of conflict is getting larger and eventually conflict becomes unavoidable. In case of no signalization, the following scenario is considered in this paper that opposing traffic arriving at both ends of a single-way path negotiates, based on the first-come-first-serve rule, to avoid unsolvable conflict within the path. In particular, a latecomer has to wait at her entry of the path until an early bird from the other entry and possibly some of its followers to first go across the path. Consequently, a queue may build up behind the latecomer. When traffic demands get even bigger, alternating queues are expected at either entry of the path. This paper examines the probability that typical conflict occurs in this scenario as well as average queueing delay resulting. Mathematical analysis is conducted also to reveal basic features of alternating queues. The obtained theoretical results are crucial for decision-making concerning the usage of a single-way path to serve two-way traffic in case of needs. Further theoretical work and simulation studies are outlined.

Abstract:Traffic-light modelling is a complex task, because many factors have to be taken into account. In particular, capturing all traffic flows in one model can significantly complicate the model. Therefore, several realistic features are typically omitted from most models. We introduce a mechanism to include pedestrians and focus on situations where they may block vehicles that get a green light simultaneously. More specifically, we consider a generalization of the Fixed-Cycle Traffic-Light (FCTL) queue. Our framework allows us to model situations where (part of the) vehicles are blocked, e.g. by pedestrians that block turning traffic and where several vehicles might depart simultaneously, e.g. in case of multiple lanes receiving a green light simultaneously. We rely on probability generating function and complex analysis techniques which are also used to study the regular FCTL queue. We study the effect of several parameters on performance measures such as the mean delay and queue-length distribution.

Abstract:Setting traffic light signals is a classical topic in traffic engineering, and important in heavy-traffic conditions when green times become scarce and longer queues are inevitably formed. For the fixed-cycle traffic-light queue, an elementary queueing model for one traffic light with cyclic signaling, we obtain heavy-traffic limits that capture the long-term queue behavior. We leverage the limit theorems to obtain sharp performance approximations for one queue in heavy traffic. We also consider optimization problems that aim for optimal division of green times among multiple conflicting traffic streams. We show that inserting heavy-traffic approximations leads to tractable optimization problems and close-to-optimal signal prescriptions.

Abstract:The steady development of motor vehicle technology will enable cars of the near future to assume an ever increasing role in the decision making and control of the vehicle itself. In the foreseeable future, cars will have the ability to communicate with one another in order to better coordinate their motion. This motivates a number of interesting algorithmic problems. One of the most challenging aspects of traffic coordination involves traffic intersections. In this paper we consider two formulations of a simple and fundamental geometric optimization problem involving coordinating the motion of vehicles through an intersection. We are given a set of $n$ vehicles in the plane, each modeled as a unit length line segment that moves monotonically, either horizontally or vertically, subject to a maximum speed limit. Each vehicle is described by a start and goal position and a start time and deadline. The question is whether, subject to the speed limit, there exists a collision-free motion plan so that each vehicle travels from its start position to its goal position prior to its deadline. We present three results. We begin by showing that this problem is NP-complete with a reduction from 3-SAT. Second, we consider a constrained version in which cars traveling horizontally can alter their speeds while cars traveling vertically cannot. We present a simple algorithm that solves this problem in $O(n \log n)$ time. Finally, we provide a solution to the discrete version of the problem and prove its asymptotic optimality in terms of the maximum delay of a vehicle.

Abstract:A study was performed to estimate the real-time vehicle queue length before the stop line at the urban signal controlled intersection.The relationship among traffic flow directions in road sections was analyzed,and two models,i.e.,an artificial neural network model and a Bayesian network model were established to deal with the effects of traffic flows in the road sections,and the structure of the models was specified.To facilitate the practical application of these models,the principal component analysis was used to decrease the input dimensions,the EM algorithm and GMM were used to represent the parameters of the train models.A simulation road network was designed based on the real world data to validate the proposed models under various experiment scenarios.Simulation results showed that the Bayesian network model can grasp the traffic flow tendencies better than the artificial neural network model because of the randomness in the urban road network.

Abstract:Oversaturated intersection control is a long-standing problem in traffic science and engineering. The problem becomes even harder when we consider a system of oversaturated intersections. Most of the research works in this area are off-line studies that require fully knowledge of origin–destination demand, which would be difficult to obtain in reality. Although several on-line feedback control methods are proposed, they only aim at preventing queue spillover, not able to minimize vehicular delay time. Moreover, these on-line control strategies are not theoretically evaluated how optimal (or sub-optimal) they are. We propose in this paper a quasi-optimal decentralized QUEUE-based feedback (abbreviated as QUEUE) control strategy for a system of oversaturated intersections. The QUEUE strategy is applied cycle-by-cycle based on measurement of current queue sizes, but its overall result is able to approximate the optimal one derived from off-line studies. Details of the feedback control laws for upstream and downstream intersections, in the queueing period and the queue dissipation period, are discussed. Superior to the existing feedback control strategies, the upper bounds of sub-optimality of the QUEUE strategy generating from demand fluctuation and coupling of intersections are specified quantitatively. It is also theoretically proved that the queue measurement error or demand estimation error would not be amplified by the QUEUE strategy. Numerical examples show that the QUEUE strategy performs very well and is robust to errors.

Abstract:We consider a queueing system with $n$ parallel queues operating according to the so-called "supermarket model" in which arriving customers join the shortest of $d$ randomly selected queues. Assuming rate $n\lambda_{n}$ Poisson arrivals and rate $1$ exponentially distributed service times, we consider this model in the heavy traffic regime, described by $\lambda_{n}\uparrow 1$ as $n\to\infty$. We give a simple expectation argument establishing that majority of queues have steady state length at least $\log_d(1-\lambda_{n})^{-1} - O(1)$ with probability approaching one as $n\rightarrow\infty$, implying the same for the steady state delay of a typical customer. Our main result concerns the detailed behavior of queues with length smaller than $\log_d(1-\lambda_{n})^{-1}-O(1)$. Assuming $\lambda_{n}$ converges to $1$ at rate at most $\sqrt{n}$, we show that the dynamics of such queues does not follow a diffusion process, as is typical for queueing systems in heavy traffic, but is described instead by a deterministic infinite system of linear differential equations, after an appropriate rescaling. The unique fixed point solution of this system is shown explicitly to be of the form $\pi_{1}(d^{i}-1)/(d-1), i\ge 1$, which we conjecture describes the steady state behavior of the queue lengths after the same rescaling. Our result is obtained by combination of several technical ideas including establishing the existence and uniqueness of an associated infinite dimensional system of non-linear integral equations and adopting an appropriate stopped process as an intermediate step.

Abstract:Queue length is an important variable in evaluating the performance of traffic management systems, especially under congested conditions. This problem has been studied in the literature based on different kinds of traffic sensors, such as loop detectors and other mobile sensors. Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems and Automatic Vehicle Identification systems have received significant attentions due to their active deployments in recent years, which provides massive License Plate Recognition (LPR) data sources. In this paper, new methods for queue length estimation at signalized intersections are proposed using LPR data and signal schemes, with the key point being the intrinsic connections between travel time of individual vehicles and queue composition in each cycle. The queue length in the previous cycle is calculated by considering the detailed trajectories of individual vehicles. Due to the hysteresis of the queue length in the previous cycle, the queue length in the immediate past cycle is formulated as a prediction problem using regression analysis. The algorithms were evaluated using field data of Guiyang city in China, and the proposed models' results fully coincide with the experimental findings even in congested conditions.

Abstract:Queue length is an important measure that helps traffic managers collect and evaluate feedback about traffic signal control. Some mobile-sensor-based approaches developed in recent years can help identify critical points for understanding the queue process. This involves using sample data related to travel time or trajectory. The latest video imaging detectors facilitate the collection of significant lane-based travel time data, from detectors installed at fixed locations. This paper presents a method to estimate lane-based queue length using the travel time data collected by these new detectors. The first vehicle leaving the downstream stop line is defined as the "leading vehicle" in each signal cycle. The key premise underlying this new method is that the maximum queue length in the first cycle, when the "leading vehicle" is queued, is related to the leading vehicle's delay time and the duration of the red light in each cycle. Queue length in the current cycle is derived by analyzing the recursive formula of maximum queue lengths across different cycles. Finally, the new model's precision is evaluated using a field survey. The results show that the new method has a higher precision compared to the existing method based in a similar concept, with maximum and average deviations of 39.36% and 12.25% respectively, over twenty cycles. The findings of this paper can be applied to improve on traffic signal control systems.

Abstract:While many classical traffic models treat the spatial extension of streets continuously or by discretization into cells of a certain length Δx, we will subdivide roads into comparatively long homogeneous road sections of constant capacity with an inhomogeneity at the end. The related model is simple and numerically efficient. It is inspired by models of dynamic queueing networks and takes into account essential features of traffic flows. Instead of treating single vehicles or velocity profiles, it focusses on flows at specific cross sections and average travel times of vehicles.

Abstract:Based on numerical simulations of a three-phase traffic flow model, a probabilistic theory of traffic at the light signal is developed. We have found that very complex spatiotemporal self-organized phenomena determine features of city traffic. We have revealed that the breakdown of {\it green wave} in a city is initiated by the emergence of a moving synchronized flow pattern (MSP) within the green wave. It turns out that a sequence of F$\rightarrow$S$\rightarrow$J transitions (F -- free flow, S -- synchronized flow, J -- moving queue) lead to traffic breakdown at the light signal. Both spontaneous and induced breakdowns of the green wave have been found. From a study of a variety of scenarios for arrival traffic, we have found that there are the infinite number of capacities of traffic at the light signal, which are in a capacity range between a minimum capacity and maximum capacity; each of the capacities gives a flow rate at which under-saturated traffic is in a metastable state with respect to the transition to over-saturated traffic. The maximum capacity depends crucially on a time-dependence of the flow rate: The larger the number of vehicles that arrive the light signal during the green phase, the larger the maximum capacity.

Abstract:In this paper we study a traffic intersection with vehicle-actuated traffic signal control. Traffic lights stay green until all lanes within a group are emptied. Assuming general renewal arrival processes, we derive exact limiting distributions of the delays under Heavy Traffic (HT) conditions. Furthermore, we derive the Light Traffic (LT) limit of the mean delays for intersections with Poisson arrivals, and develop a heuristic adaptation of this limit to capture the LT behaviour for other interarrival-time distributions. We combine the LT and HT results to develop closed-form approximations for the mean delays of vehicles in each lane. These closed-form approximations are quite accurate, very insightful and simple to implement.

Abstract:We derive a conservation law on a network made of two incoming branches and a single outgoing one from a discrete traffic flow model. The continuous model is obtained from the discrete one by letting the number of vehicles tend to infinity and after scaling. In the discrete model, the vehicles solve a follow-the-leader model on each branch. The priority rule at the junction is given by a timeperiodic traffic light (with a period tending to infinity with the scaling for technical reasons). The conservation law at the limit is L 1 contractive and described in terms of a germ depending on the flux and on the average amount of time the traffic light is ''green'' on a branch.

Abstract:Developments in sensor technologies, especially emerging connected and autonomous vehicles, facilitate better queue length (QL) measurements on signalized intersection approaches in real time. Currently there are very limited methods that utilize QL information in real-time to enhance the performance of signalized intersections. In this paper we present methods for QL estimation and a control algorithm that adjusts maximum green times in actuated signals at each cycle based on QLs. The proposed method is implemented at a single intersection with random and platoon arrivals, and evaluated in VISSIM (a microscopic traffic simulation environment) assuming 100 % accurate cycle-by-cycle queue length information is available. To test the robustness of the method, numerical experiments are performed where traffic demand is increased and by 20\% relative to the demand levels for which signal timing parameters are optimized. Compared to the typical fully-actuated signal control, the proposed QL-based method improves average delay, number of stops, and QL for random arrivals, by 6 %, 9 %, and 10 % respectively. In addition, the method improves average delay, number of stops, and QL by 3 %, 3 %, and 11 % respectively for platoon vehicle arrivals.

Abstract:Summary: Traffic light coordination is a complex problem. In this paper, we extend previous work on an abstract model of city traffic to allow for multiple street intersections. We test a self-organizing method in our model, showing that it is close to theoretical optima and superior to a traditional method of traffic light coordination. Abstract: The elementary cellular automaton following rule 184 can mimic particles flowing in one direction at a constant speed. This automaton can therefore model highway traffic. In a recent paper, we have incorporated intersections regulated by traffic lights to this model using exclusively elementary cellular automata. In such a paper, however, we only explored a rectangular grid. We now extend our model to more complex scenarios employing an hexagonal grid. This extension shows first that our model can readily incorporate multiple-way intersections and hence simulate complex scenarios. In addition, the current extension allows us to study and evaluate the behavior of two different kinds of traffic light controller for a grid of six-way streets allowing for either two or three street intersections: a traffic light that tries to adapt to the amount of traffic (which results in self-organizing traffic lights) and a system of synchronized traffic lights with coordinated rigid periods (sometimes called the "green wave" method). We observe a tradeoff between system capacity and topological complexity. The green wave method is unable to cope with the complexity of a higher-capacity scenario, while the self-organizing method is scalable, adapting to the complexity of a scenario and exploiting its maximum capacity. Additionally, in this paper we propose a benchmark, independent of methods and models, to measure the performance of a traffic light controller comparing it against a theoretical optimum.

Abstract:We consider a system of ordered cars moving in $\R$ from right to left. Each car is represented by a point in $\R$; two or more cars can occupy the same point but cannot overpass. Cars have two possible velocities: either 0 or 1. An unblocked car needs an exponential random time of mean 1 to pass from speed 0 to speed 1 (\emph{slow-to-start}). Car $i$, say, travels at speed 1 until it (possibly) hits the stopped car $i-1$ to its left. After the departure of car $i-1$, car $i$ waits an exponential random time to change its speed to 1, travels at this speed until it hits again stopped car $i-1$ and so on. Initially cars are distributed in $\R$ according to a Poisson process of parameter $\lambda<1$. We show that every car will be stopped only a finite number of times and that the final relative car positions is again a Poisson process with parameter $\lambda$. To do that, we relate the trajectories of the cars to a $M/M/1$ stationary queue as follows. Space in the traffic model is time for the queue. The initial positions of the cars coincide with the arrival process of the queue and the final relative car positions match the departure process of the queue.

Estimation of urban traffic state with probe vehicles

Abstract:We present in this paper a method to estimate urban traffic state with communicating vehicles. Vehicles moving on the links of the urban road network form queues at the traffic lights. We assume that a proportion of vehicles are equipped with localization and communication capabilities, and name them probe vehicles. First, we propose a method for the estimation of the penetration ratio of probe vehicles, as well as the vehicles arrival rate on a link. Moreover, we show that turn ratios at each junction can be estimated. Second, assuming that the turn ratios at each junction are given, we propose an estimation of the queue lengths on a 2-lanes link, by extending a 1-lane existing method. Our extension introduces vehicles assignment onto the lanes. Third, based on this approach, we propose optimal control laws for the traffic light and for the assignment of the arriving vehicles onto the lane queues. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted with Veins framework that bi-directionally couples microscopic road traffic and communication simulators. We illustrate and discuss our propositions with the simulation results.

Abstract:We study how to estimate real time queue lengths at signalized intersections using intersection travel times collected from mobile traffic sensors. The estimation is based on the observation that critical pattern changes of intersection travel times or delays, such as the discontinuities (i.e., sudden and dramatic increases in travel times) and non-smoothness (i.e., changes of slopes of travel times), indicate signal timing or queue length changes. By detecting these critical points in intersection travel times or delays, the real time queue length can be re-constructed. We first introduce the concept of Queue Rear No-delay Arrival Time which is related to the non-smoothness of queuing delay patterns and queue length changes. We then show how measured intersection travel times from mobile sensors can be processed to generate sample vehicle queuing delays. Under the uniform arrival assumption, the queuing delays reduce linearly within a cycle. The delay pattern can be estimated by a linear fitting method using sample queuing delays. Queue Rear No-delay Arrival Time can then be obtained from the delay pattern, and be used to estimate the maximum and minimum queue lengths of a cycle, based on which the real-time queue length curve can also be constructed. The model and algorithm are tested in a field experiment and in simulation.
