Abstract:It is well known that the source-free Maxwell equations are invariant under electric-magnetic duality rotations, F --> F cos {\theta} + *F sin {\theta}. These transformations are indeed a symmetry of the theory in Noether sense. The associated constant of motion is the difference in the intensity between self- and anti-self dual components of the electromagnetic field or, equivalently, the difference between the right and left circularly polarized components. This conservation law holds even if the electromagnetic field interacts with an arbitrary classical gravitational background. After re-examining these results, we discuss whether this symmetry is maintained when the electromagnetic field is quantized. The answer is in the affirmative in the absence of gravity, but not necessarily otherwise. As a consequence, the net polarization of the quantum electromagnetic field fails to be conserved in curved spacetimes. This is a quantum effect, and it can be understood as the generalization of the fermion chiral anomaly to fields of spin one.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper attempts to explore the classical and quantum electro - magnetic dual rotation symmetries of electromagnetic fields in curved spacetime. Specifically: 1. **Symmetry in classical theory**: - It is well - known that the source - free Maxwell equations are invariant under the electro - magnetic dual rotation \( F \rightarrow F\cos\theta+\star F\sin\theta \). These transformations are not only symmetries of the theory but also associated with Noether's theorem, giving rise to a conserved quantity, namely the difference between the self - dual and anti - self - dual component intensities, or equivalently, the difference between the intensities of the right - handed and left - handed circular polarization components. - This conservation law still holds even when the electromagnetic field interacts with an arbitrary classical gravitational background. 2. **Symmetry in quantum theory**: - The paper further explores whether this symmetry still holds when the electromagnetic field is quantized. It is found that in the absence of gravity, this symmetry still exists, but this is not necessarily the case in curved spacetime. - As a result, the net polarization of the quantum electromagnetic field is no longer conserved in curved spacetime. This is a quantum effect and can be understood as an extension of the fermion chiral anomaly to the spin - 1 field. ### Formula summary - **Electro - magnetic dual rotation**: \[ F \rightarrow F\cos\theta+\star F\sin\theta \] \[ \star F \rightarrow \star F\cos\theta - F\sin\theta \] - **Conserved quantity**: \[ j^\mu_D=\frac{1}{2}(A_\nu\star F^{\mu\nu}-Z_\nu F^{\mu\nu}-Z_\nu\star G^{\mu\nu}) \] \[ Q_D = \int_{\Sigma_t}d\Sigma_3(A_\mu B^\mu - Z_\mu E^\mu) \] - **Conserved current after quantization**: \[ \langle\nabla_\mu j^\mu_D\rangle=\text{non - zero value} \] ### Main conclusions - **Classical theory**: The electro - magnetic dual rotation symmetry is a strict symmetry in the source - free Maxwell equations and still holds in any classical gravitational background. - **Quantical theory**: In the absence of gravity, this symmetry still holds after quantization. However, in curved spacetime, this symmetry may be broken due to quantum effects, leading to the quantum electro - magnetic dual anomaly. Through these analyses, the paper reveals an important phenomenon when the electromagnetic field is quantized in curved spacetime, namely the quantum electro - magnetic dual anomaly. This discovery not only deepens our understanding of quantum field theory but also provides a new perspective for studying related problems in cosmology and high - energy physics.
