Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:We use the tangent method to compute the arctic curve of the Twenty-Vertex (20V) model with particular domain wall boundary conditions for a wide set of integrable weights. To this end, we extend to the finite geometry of domain wall boundary conditions the standard connection between the bulk 20V and 6V models via the Kagome lattice ice model. This allows to express refined partition functions of the 20V model in terms of their 6V counterparts, leading to explicit parametric expressions for the various portions of its arctic curve. The latter displays a large variety of shapes depending on the weights and separates a central liquid phase from up to six different frozen phases. A number of numerical simulations are also presented, which highlight the arctic curve phenomenon and corroborate perfectly the analytic predictions of the tangent method. We finally compute the arctic curve of the Quarter-turn symmetric Holey Aztec Domino Tiling (QTHADT) model, a problem closely related to the 20V model and whose asymptotics may be analyzed via a similar tangent method approach. Again results for the QTHADT model are found to be in perfect agreement with our numerical simulations.

Abstract:We consider the four-vertex model with a special choice of fixed boundary conditions giving rise to limit shape phenomena. More generally, the considered boundary conditions relate vertex models to scalar products of off-shell Bethe states, boxed plane partitions, and fishnet diagrams in quantum field theory. In the scaling limit, the model exhibits the emergence of an arctic curve separating a central disordered region from six frozen `corners' of ferroelectric or anti-ferroelectric type. We determine the analytic expression of the interface by means of the Tangent Method. We supplement this heuristic method with an alternative, rigorous derivation of the arctic curve. This is based on the exact evaluation of suitable correlation functions, devised to detect spatial transition from order to disorder, in terms of the partition function of some discrete log-gas associated to the orthogonalizing measure of the Hahn polynomials. As a by-product, we also deduce that the arctic curve's fluctuations are governed by the Tracy-Widom distribution.

Abstract:We consider the six-vertex model with reflecting end boundary condition. We study the asymptotic behavior of the boundary correlations. This asymptotic behavior is used as an input into the Tangent Method in order to derive analytically the arctic curve at the free fermion point. The obtained curve is a semicircle, which is in agreement with previous Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:We study the T-system of type $A_\infty$, also known as the octahedron recurrence/equation, viewed as a 2+1-dimensional discrete evolution equation. Generalizing the study of [P. Di Francesco and R. Soto-Garrido. Arctic curves of the octahedron equation. J. Phys. A, 47(28):285204, 34, 2014], we consider initial data along parallel ``slanted" planes perpendicular to an arbitrary admissible direction $(r,s,t)\in {\mathbb Z}_+^3$. The solution of the T-system is interpreted as the partition function of a dimer model on some suitable ``pinecone" graph introduced in [M. Bousquet-Mélou, J. Propp, and J. West. Perfect matchings for the three-term Gale-Robinson sequences. Electron. J. Combin., 16(1):Research Paper 125, 37, 2009]. The T-system formulation and some exact solutions in uniform or periodic cases allow us to explore the thermodynamic limit of the corresponding dimer models and to derive exact arctic curves separating the various phases of the system.

We describe how the recently developed `Tangent method' can be used to determine the form of the arctic curve. The obtained result is in agreement with numerics.

Abstract:The six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions is one representative of a class of two-dimensional lattice statistical mechanics models that exhibit a phase separation known as the arctic curve phenomenon. In the thermodynamic limit, the degrees of freedom are completely frozen in a region near the boundary, while they are critically fluctuating in a central region. The arctic curve is the phase boundary that separates those two regions. Critical fluctuations inside the arctic curve have been studied extensively, both in physics and in mathematics, in free models (i.e., models that map to free fermions, or equivalently to determinantal point processes). Here we study those critical fluctuations in the interacting (i.e., not free, not determinantal) six-vertex model, and provide evidence for the following two claims:

Abstract:The Tangent Method of Colomo and Sportiello is applied to the study of the asymptotics of domino tilings of large Aztec rectangles, with some fixed distribution of defects along a boundary. The associated Non-Intersecting Lattice Path configurations are made of Schröder paths whose weights involve two parameters $\gamma$ and $q$ keeping track respectively of one particular type of step and of the area below the paths. We derive the arctic curve for an arbitrary distribution of defects, and illustrate our result with a number of examples involving different classes of boundary defects.

Abstract:The original motivation for this paper goes back to the mid-1990's, when James Propp was interested in natural situations when the number of domino tilings of a region increases if some of its unit squares are deleted. Guided in part by the intuition one gets from earlier work on parallels between the number of tilings of a region with holes and the 2D Coulomb energy of the corresponding system of electric charges, we consider Aztec diamond regions with unit square defects along two adjacent sides. We show that for large regions, if these defects are at fixed distances from a corner, the ratio between the number of domino tilings of the Aztec diamond with defects and the number of tilings of the entire Aztec diamond approaches a Delannoy number. When the locations of the defects are not fixed but instead approach given points on the boundary of the scaling limit $S$ (a square) of the Aztec diamonds, we prove that, provided the line segment connecting these points is outside the circle inscribed in $S$, this ratio has the same asymptotics as the Delannoy number corresponding to the locations of the defects; if the segment crosses the circle, the asymptotics is radically different. We use this to deduce (under the assumption that an arctic curve exists) that the arctic curve for domino tilings of Aztec diamonds is the circle inscribed in $S$. We also discuss counterparts of this phenomenon for lozenge tilings of hexagons.

Double tangent method for two-periodic Aztec diamonds

Abstract:We use the octahedron recurrence, which generalizes the quadratic recurrence found by Kuo for standard Aztec diamonds, in order to compute boundary one-refined and two-refined partition functions for two-periodic Aztec diamonds. In a first approach, the geometric tangent method allows to derive the parametric form of the arctic curve, separating the solid and liquid phases. This is done by using the recently reformulation of the tangent method and the one-refined partition functions without extension of the domain. In a second part, we use the two-refined tangent method to rederive the arctic curve from the boundary two-refined partition functions, which we compute exactly on the lattice. The curve satisfies the known algebraic equation of degree 8, of which either tangent method gives an explicit parametrization.

Abstract:We present a new discretization of sea ice dynamics on the sphere. The approach describes sea ice motion in tangent planes to the sphere. On each triangle of the mesh, the ice dynamics are discretized in a local coordinate system using a CD‐grid‐like non‐conforming finite element method. The development allows a straightforward coupling to the C‐grid like ocean model in ICON‐O, which uses the same infrastructure as the sea ice module. Using a series of test examples, we demonstrate that the non‐conforming finite element discretization provides a stable realization of large‐scale sea ice dynamics on the sphere. A comparison with observation shows that we can simulate typical drift patterns with the new numerical realization of the sea ice dynamics.

Abstract:We applied the modified centroid method with a fractal magnetization model on a new magnetic anomaly grid for the Circum-Arctic area (CAMP) to obtain the first high-resolution Arctic Curie-point model and to infer geothermal structure. The shallowest Curie-point depths, found in the oceanic domain, reveal the cooling pattern of oceanic lithosphere and asymmetric mantle thermal activities across spreading ridges. The Cretaceous High Arctic large igneous province (HALIP), the most prominent magmatic feature in the Arctic, shows slightly lower heat flow and higher thermal conductivities than the surrounding area, indicating a complete cooling of the HALIP, but HALIP also has shallow Curie-point depths. We attribute this contradiction to the high titanium content of HALIP that lowers the Curie temperature. Therefore, Curie-point depths constrain well the boundary of the HALIP. On the Arctic continental shelves, the largest Curie-point depths are found in deep sedimentary basins, where lower crust eclogitization was previously interpreted. Furthermore, we found that this positive correlation between large Curie-point depths and large sediment thickness is prevalent for global continental margin sedimentary basins.

Abstract:Studying spacetimes with continuous symmetries by dimensional reduction to a lower dimensional spacetime is a well known technique in field theory and gravity. Recently, its use has been advocated in numerical relativity as an efficient computational technique for the numerical study of axisymmetric asymptotically flat 4-dimensional spacetimes. We prove here that if the dimensionally reduced spacetime is a physically reasonable 3-dimensional asymptotically flat or asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime, then, surprisingly, the topology of the higher dimensional spacetime must be one of two product topologies. Reductions of other topologies result in physically pathological spacetimes. In particular, reduction of asymptotically flat 4-dimensional spacetimes must lead to pathologies. These results use only the topological censorship theorem and topological methods and consequently are independent of the field equations and reduction method.

Abstract:We compute the algebraic equation for arctic curves of the Aztec diamond with a doubly (quasi-)periodic weight structure and obtain similar results for certain models of the hexagon. In particular, we determine the algebraic degree of such curves as a function of the number of frozen and smooth (or gaseous) regions. The key to our result is the construction of a discriminant for meromorphic differentials on a higher genus Riemann surface. This construction works analogously for meromorphic sections of arbitrary holomorphic line bundles. In the genus $g = 0$ case this notion reduces to the usual discriminant of a polynomial.

Abstract:We investigate experimentally the receding of a contact line when a Peltier module is pulled out of a water bath at constant speed, while a ice layer is also growing at constant speed on the Peltier module. A steady regime is therefore reached for all the parameters used in this studied, corresponding to a dynamical stationnary meniscus. We show that the height of the meniscus provides most of the properties of the flow. For high pulling rate, it is related to the amount of liquid of the equivalent Landau-Levich (LL) film that would be extracted from the bath, which is eventually freezing as the plate is lifted upward. For smaller velocity, so that no LL film would be formed without freezing, the meniscus height is directly linked to the contact angle of water on ice in these conditions. Solving numerically the meniscus equation taking into account the solidifcation of water, our results suggest that the contact angle of water on ice should be around $6^\circ$.

Abstract:In latitude-dependent energy balance models, ice-free and ice-covered conditions form physical boundaries of the system. With carbon dioxide treated as a bifurcation parameter, the resulting bifurcation diagram is nonsmooth with curves of equilibria and boundaries forming corners at points of intersection. Over long time scales, atmospheric carbon dioxide varies dynamically and the nonsmooth diagram becomes a set of quasi-equilibria. {However, when introducing carbon dynamics, care must be taken with the physical boundaries and appropriate boundary motion specified. In this article, we extend an energy balance model to include slowly varying carbon dioxide and develop a nonsmooth framework based on physically relevant boundary dynamics. Within this framework, we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as invariance of the region of phase space bounded by ice-free and ice-covered states.

Abstract:Given any non-central interior point $o$ of the unit disc $D$, the diameter $L$ through $o$ is the union of two linear arcs emanating from $o$ which meet $\partial D$ orthogonally, the shorter of them stable and the longer unstable (under these boundary conditions). In each of the two half discs bounded by $L$, we construct a convex eternal solution to curve shortening flow which fixes $o$ and meets $\partial D$ orthogonally, and evolves out of the unstable critical arc at $t=-\infty$ and into the stable one at $t=+\infty$. We then prove that these two (congruent) solutions are the only non-flat convex ancient solutions to the curve shortening flow satisfying the specified boundary conditions. We obtain analogous conclusions in the "degenerate" case $o\in\partial D$ as well, although in this case the solution contracts to the point $o$ at a finite time with asymptotic shape that of a half Grim Reaper, thus providing an interesting example for which an embedded flow develops a collapsing singularity.
