Abstract:A new method is proposed to solve bend- ing problems of thin uniformly loaded plates of reg- ular polygon shape in polar coordinates. Selecting a trisl function, which satisfies symmetrical condi- tions, the series solutions of uniformly loaded regu- lar polygon plates can be found. A good result can be obtained with only first five terms of the deflec- tion or bending moment formula. The result agree well with those of the same configuration plates in literature. This method can be applied to arbitrary thin regular polygon plates with uniform load or ar- bitrary loads.
BEM-based Solution of Heterogeneous Thin Plate Bending Problems

Abstract:The boundary element method(BEM) is used to investigate heterogeneous infinite thin plate bending problems subjected to remote loading.In numerical implementation,the boundary integral equations for the inclusions and the matrix are respectively formed.Then the corresponding systems of linear algebraic equations are obtained using the well-known discretized technique.Based on the matrix-inclusion interface connecting conditions,the resulting system of linear algebraic equations which can be solved to obtain all the unknown interface quantities is presented.If needed,the bending moments at the given points within the inclusions and the matrix can easily be calculated.The obtained results are compared with the available solutions.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:Trefftz boundary collocation method is used to analyse the bending of anisotropic thin plates. Compared with the existing collocation methods employing complicated fundamental solutions in which the source points are located outside the plate, boundary collocation method presented in this article is relatively simple. It requires only the general solution of anisotropic thin plate bending problems and no singular integrals appear in the formulation. The collocation points are located along the plate edges. The implementation of the related computer codes is fairly straightforward. Numerical results are generally more accurate compared with existing solutions.

Abstract:The symplectic geometry method is introduced for exact bending solutions of moderately thick rectangular plates with two opposite edges simply supported. The basic equations for the plates are first transferred into Hamilton canonical equations. The whole state variables are then separated. Using the method of eigenfunction expansion in the symplectic geometry, typical examples for plates with selected boundary conditions are solved and exact bending solutions obtained. Since only the basic elasticity equations of the plates are used, this method eliminates the need to pre-determine the deformation function and is hence more reasonable than conventional methods. Numerical results were presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of this approach as compared to those reported in other literatures.

Abstract:This paper discusses the application of the boundary contour method for resolving plate bending problems. The exploitation of the integrand divergence free property of the plate bending boundary integral equation based on the Kirchhoff hypothesis and a very useful application of Stokes' Theorem are presented to convert surface integrals on boundary elements to the computation of bending potential functions on the discretized boundary points, even for curved surface elements of arbitrary shape. Singularity and treatment of the discontinued corner point are not needed at all. The evaluation of the physics variant at internal points is also shown in this article. Numerical results are presented for some plate bending problems and compared against analytical and previous solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, for the first time, the double finite integral transform method is introduced to explore the analytical bending solutions of rectangular thin plates with corner supports. Introducing the concept of generalized simply supported edge, the general form analytical solutions for bending of the plates under consideration are obtained by applying the finite integral transform to the governing equation and some of the boundary conditions. The analytical bending solutions of plates under specific boundary conditions are then obtained elegantly by imposing the remaining boundary conditions. Compared with the conventional inverse/semi-inverse methods, the present method is straightforward without any predetermination of solution forms, which makes it very attractive for exploring new analytical bending solutions of plates with complex boundary conditions. Another advantage of the method is that the analytical solutions obtained converge rapidly due to utilization of the sum functions. Comprehensive analytical results obtained in this paper illuminate the validity and accuracy of the present method by comparison with those from the literature and the finite element method.

Abstract:In this work, a meshless generalized finite difference method (GFDM), based on the Taylor series expansion and weighted moving-least square approximation, is proposed to solve the bending problem of variable thickness thin plate under various combinations of boundary conditions. The proposed method can treat the plates of complex shapes with an arbitrary continuous varying thickness in a simple and modular way. Besides, the method proposed a new strategy to create a well-determined linear system by introducing supplementary nodes on the boundary. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the proposed method.

Abstract:The novel symplectic superposition method is used in this work to yield the analytical benchmark bending solutions of rectangular thin plates point-supported at two adjacent corners. The solution procedure is rational and rigorous without any prior assumption of the solutions, thus it paves the way to accurate description of bending of point-supported plates. Numerical results are presented to show the validity of the method by comparison with those by the well-established finite element method (FEM). The present solutions are expected to serve for validation of various approximate/numerical methods.

Abstract:A boundary collocation method based on the least-square technique and a corresponding adaptive computation process have been developed for the plate bending problem. The trial functions are constructed using a series of the biharmonic polynomials, and the local error indicators are given by the residu- als of the energy density on the boundary. In comparison with the conventional collocation methods, the solution accuracy in the present method can be improved in an economical and efficient way. In order to dem- onstrate the efficiency and advantages of the adaptive boundary collocation method proposed in this paper, two numerical examples are presented for circular plates subjected to uniform loads and restrained by mixed boundary conditions. The numerical results for the examples show good agreement with ones presented in the literature.

Abstract:Two fundamental solutions for bending problem of Reissner's plates on two-parameter foundation are derived by means of Fourier integral transformation of generalized function in this paper. On the basis of virtual work principles, three boundar integral equations which fit for arbitrary shapes, lods and boundary conditions of thick plates are presented according to Hu Haichang's theory about Reissner's plates. It provides the fundamental theories for the application of BEM. A numerical example is given for clamped, simply supported and free boundary conditions. The results obtained are satisfactory as compared with the analytical methods.

Abstract:Materials which exhibit different elastic moduli in tension and compression are known as bimodular materials. The bimodular materials model, which is founded on the criterion of positive-negative signs of principal stress, is important for the structural analysis and design. However, due to the inherent complexity of the constitutive relation, it is difficult to obtain an analytical solution of a bimodular bending components except in particular simple problems. Based on the existent simplified model, this paper solves analytically bending thin plates with different moduli in tension and compression. By using the continuity conditions of stress components in unknown neutral layer, we determine the location of the neutral layer, and derive the governing differential equation for deflection, the flexural rigidity, and the internal forces in the thin plate. We also use a circular thin plate with bimodulus to illustrate the application of this solution derived in this paper. The results show that the introduction of different moduli has influences on the flexural stiffness of the bending thin plate.

Abstract:This paper deals with the bending of rectangular thin plates point-supported at three corners using an analytic symplectic superposition method. The problems are of fundamental importance in both civil and mechanical engineering, but there were no accurate analytic solutions reported in the literature. This is attributed to the difficulty in seeking the solutions that satisfy the governing fourth-order partial differential equation with the free boundary conditions at all the edges as well as the support conditions at the corners. In the following, the Hamiltonian system-based equation for plate bending is formulated, and two types of fundamental problems are analytically solved by the symplectic method. The analytic solutions of the plates point-supported at three corners are then obtained by superposition, where the constants are obtained by a set of linear equations. The solution procedure presented in this paper offers a rigorous way to yield analytic solutions of similar problems. Some numerical results, validated by the finite element method, are shown to provide useful benchmarks for comparison and validation of other solution methods.

Abstract:The mechanical analysis of thin-plate structures is a major challenge in the field of structural engineering, especially when they have nonclassical boundary conditions, such as those encountered in cement concrete road slabs connected by transfer bars. Conventional analytical solutions are usually limited to classical boundary conditions—clamped support, simple support, and free edges—and cannot adequately describe many engineering scenarios. In this study, an analytical solution to the bending problem of an anisotropic thin plate subjected to a pair of edges with free opposing elastic rotational constraints is found using a two-dimensional augmented Fourier series solution method. In the derivation process, the thin-plate problem can be transformed into a problem of solving a system of linear algebraic equations by applying Stoke's transform method, which greatly reduces the mathematical difficulty of solving the problem. Complex boundary conditions can be optimally handled without the need for large computational resources. The paper addresses the exact analytical solutions for bending problems with multiple combinations of boundary conditions, such as contralateral free–contralateral simple support (SFSF), contralateral free–contralateral solid support–simple support (CFSF), and contralateral free–contralateral clamped support (CFCF). These solutions are realized by employing the Stoke transformation and adjusting the spring parameters in the analyzed solutions. The results of this method are also compared with the finite element method and analytical solutions from the literature, and good agreement is obtained, demonstrating the effectiveness of the method. The significance of the study findings lies in the simplification of complex nonclassical boundary condition problems using a simple and reliable analytical method applicable to a wide range of engineering thin-plate structures.

Abstract:Double finite integral transform method is proposed in this paper to obtain the analytical bending solutions of moderately thick rectangular plates with all edges free resting on elastic foundations, which was difficult to be acquired due to the complexity of the mathematical model. The accuracy of the method is validated by the literature as well as the finite element method (FEM). The solution approach presented here can be used to solve the problems of plates with different boundary conditions in an elegant, step-by-step way without predetermining any trial solutions. The results obtained in this paper can serve as benchmarks for future reference.

Abstract:This work presents the first ever analytical solutions for bending of a rectangular, thin plate supported only at its four corners. This breakthrough analysis employs a new symplectic elasticity approach that extends beyond the limitation of the classical plate bending methods such as Timoshenko's method, Navier method, Levy method and the polynomial approximation analysis of Lee and Ballesteros (Int J Mech Sci 1960;2:206). The classical methods are, in fact, special cases of this symplectic approach in the real eigenvalue regime for wavenumber with at least one pair of opposite sides of plates simply supported. For plate problems that do not fall into this category, the classical methods fail to yield any analytical solutions, but the symplectic approach does because in these cases the plate bending problems enter the complex eigenvalue regime for wavenumber. Another distinctive feature of this new approach is its necessity to pose an eigenvalue problem even for plate bending. In short, this innovative approach establishes the relationship between eigenvalue problem and bending. The novelty of this approach lies in the use of the Hamiltonian principle in a symplectic geometry space to derive a Hamiltonian system and a full state vector. The free boundaries with corner supports are dealt with using the variational principle. Analytical bending modes are then derived by expansion of eigenfunctions. The solutions are compared with other known (approximate) results and numerical finite element solutions but some of the results are not in agreement. Because the analytical bending moment and shear force solutions thus derived fulfill all natural and geometric boundary conditions, it leaves ample room for authentication of the benchmarks in the future. In addition, the twisting moment at the corners satisfies the condition for static bending equilibrium, in which the finite element solutions fail. Abstract:Based on the analogies between plane elasticity and thin plate bending problem,the thin plate bending under symplectic geometry form was solved by direct method.For thin plate with different boundaries,first the order of the governing equations was decreased to form a dual equation set,then the variable separation method was used,so the problem was transformed into an eigen-value problem.The following methods such as eigen-function,symplectic orthogonal relationship and symplectic expansion method were usded to obtain the analytical solutions of the thin plate.The numerical example shows that the method is effective and converges fast.

Abstract:We generalize a recent theory of bending of thin micropolar plates by incorporating surface effects through the modeling of plate surfaces as adjacent two-dimensional micropolar elastic bodies. By incorporating both elastic surface effects and the micropolar elastic behavior of the plate, the proposed model is capable of taking into account the contribution of high surface-to-volume ratios as well as the influence of microstructural mechanics at micro/nano scales. We determine the fundamental solution of the resulting system of equations and establish uniqueness results for the corresponding Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems. Moreover, we provide a numerical example to demonstrate the efficiency of the model in representing the size-dependence arising from various factors that incorporate characteristic lengths. Furthermore, we showcase the sensitivity of the results to different types of characteristic lengths present in the model.

Abstract:A novel superposition method based on the symplectic geometry approach is presented for exact bending analysis of rectangular cantilever thin plates. The basic equations for rectangular thin plate are first transferred into Hamilton canonical equations. By the symplectic geometry method, the analytic solutions to some problems for plates with slidingly supported edges are derived. Then the exact bending solutions of rectangular cantilever thin plates are obtained using the method of superposition. The symplectic superposition method developed in this paper is completely rational compared with the conventional analytical ones because the predetermination of deflection functions, which is indispensable in existing methods, is dispelled. Abstract:The bending problem of a rectangular plate with rotationally restrained edges under a concentrated force is studied. An emphasis is placed on the determination of the corner forces and deflection. The problem is solved by superposition of classical Navier’s and Levy’s solutions. Analytic solutions in terms of series are obtained for RSSS, RRSS and RSRS plates, respectively, where R and S stand for rotational restraint and simple support, respectively. Some important design parameters such as maximum deflection and corner force are evaluated. The effect of edge restraint on these parameters is illustrated.
