Abstract:This paper shows that groups of order $64$ are uniquely determined up to isomorphism by their Tables of Marks. This then resolves a previously posed question about whether all groups of order less than $96$ are determined by their Tables of Marks.

Let [math] be the set of all irreducible complex character degrees of [math] and denote by [math] the set of all primes which divide some character degree of [math]. The character-prime graph [math] associated to [math] is a simple undirected graph whose vertex set is [math] and there is an edge between two distinct primes [math] and [math] if and only if the product [math] divides some character degree of [math]. We show that the finite nonabelian simple groups [math], [math], [math], [math], [math] and [math] are uniquely determined by their degree-patterns and orders.

Abstract:We find an upper bound for the number of groups of order $n$ up to isomorphism in the variety $G = A_pA_qA_r$, where $p$, $q$ and $r$ are distinct primes. We also find a bound on the orders and on the number of conjugacy classes of subgroups that are maximal amongst the subgroups of the general linear group that are also in the variety $A_qA_r$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $d$ be the degree of an irreducible character of $G$ such that $|G|=d(d+e)$ for some $e>1$. Consider the case when $G$ is solvable, $d$ is square-free, and $(d,d+e)=1$. We wish to explore an equivalent condition on $G$ when $d\in\text{cd}(G)$. We show that if $d\in\text{cd}(G)$ then there is a sequence of congruences relating the prime power factors of $d+e$ to the product of prime factors of $d$ such that the product of the moduli in this sequence of congruences is $d$. Moreover, the argument will hold in both directions.

Abstract:In a finite group G , ρ(G) denotes the product of element orders of G . Let p,q,r,s and t be prime numbers. Recently, it was proved that Cp3 , C pq , Cp2q and C pqrs are characterizable by the product of element orders, and if ρ(G)=ρ(Cpqr) , then G≅A5 or Cpqr . In this paper, we continue this work and we show that Cp×A5 (for p > 5) and C pqrst are characterizable by the product of element orders. In the rest of the paper, we show that if ρ(G)=ρ(Cpqr)sρ(Cs)p2q, then (p,q,r,s)=(2,3,5,11) and G≅L2(11) . This shows that the structure of ρ(G) uniquely determined L2(11) and so L2(11) is the only group with this form of ρ(G) .

Abstract:We investigate finite, non-abelian quotients $G$ of the pure braid group on two strands $\mathsf{P}_2(\Sigma_b)$, where $\Sigma_b$ is a closed Riemann surface of genus $b$, which do not factor through $\pi_1(\Sigma_b \times \Sigma_b)$. Building on our previous work on some special systems of generators on finite groups that we called \emph{diagonal double Kodaira structures}, we prove that, if $G$ has not order $32$, then $|G| \geq 64$, and we completely classify the cases where equality holds. In the last section, as a geometric application of our algebraic results, we construct two $3$-dimensional families of double Kodaira fibrations having the same biregular invariants and the same Betti numbers but different fundamental group.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and write ${\rm cd}(G)$ for the degree set of the complex irreducible characters of $G$. The group $G$ is said to satisfy the {\it two-prime hypothesis} if, for any distinct degrees $a, b \in {\rm cd}(G)$, the total number of (not necessarily different) primes of the greatest common divisor ${\rm gcd}(a, b)$ is at most $2$. In this paper, we prove an upper bound on the number of irreducible character degrees of a nonsolvable group that has a composition factor isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2 (q)$ for $q \geq 7$.

Creation of X-ray cavities in galaxy clusters with cosmic rays

Abstract:We describe how AGN-produced cosmic rays form large X-ray cavities and radio lobes in the hot diffuse gas in galaxy groups and clusters. Cosmic rays are assumed to be produced in a small shocked region near the cavity center, such as at the working surface of a radio jet. The coupled equations for gasdynamics and cosmic ray diffusion are solved with various assumptions about the diffusion coefficient. To form large, long-lived cavities similar to those observed, the diffusion coefficient must not exceed kappa = 10^28 cm^2/s in the hot gas, very similar to values required in models of cosmic ray diffusion in the Milky Way. When kappa does not exceed 10^28, cosmic rays are confined within the cavities for times comparable to the cavity buoyancy time, as implied by observations of X-ray cavities and their radio synchrotron emission. Collisions of proton cosmic rays with thermal plasma nuclei followed by pion decay can result in enhanced gamma ray emission from the cavity walls.

Abstract:Let G be a two generator subgroup of PSL(2,C). The Jorgensen number J(G) of G is defined by J(G)=inf{ |tr^2 A-4|+|tr[A,B]-2| ; G=<A,B>}. If G is a non-elementary Kleinian group, then J(G) >= 1. This inequality is called Jorgensen's inequality. In this paper, we show that, for any r >= 1, there exists a non-elementary Kleinian group whose Jorgensen number is equal to r. This answers a question posed by Oichi and Sato. We also present our computer generated picture which estimates Jorgensen numbers from above in the diagonal slice of Schottky space.

Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.

Abstract:We construct two finite groups of size $2^{365}\cdot 3^{105}\cdot 7^{104}$: a solvable group $G$ and a non-solvable group $H$, such that for every integer $n$ the groups have the same number of elements of order $n$. This answers a question posed in 1987 by John G. Thompson.

Abstract:For a finite group $G$, the vertices of the prime graph $\Gamma(G)$ are the primes that divide $|G|$, and two vertices $p$ and $q$ are connected by an edge if there is an element of order $pq$ in $G$. Prime graphs of solvable groups have been classified, and prime graphs of groups whose noncyclic composition factors are isomorphic to a single nonabelian simple group $T$ have been classified in the case where $T$ has order divisible by exactly three or four distinct primes, except for the cases $T = \operatorname{Sz}(8)$, $T = \operatorname{Sz}(32)$, and $T = \operatorname{PSL}(2,q)$, which in some sense are the hardest cases. In this paper, we complete the classification for $T = \operatorname{Sz}(32)$, $T = \operatorname{Sz}(8)$, and $T = \operatorname{PSL}(2,2^5)$, with the latter two being the first cases ever studied where $|\text{Out}(T)|$ has prime factors which do not divide $|T|$. The groups studied in this paper are also the first ones requiring knowledge of their Brauer character tables to complete the classification task.

A note on the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group modulo squares

Abstract:We investigate the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group of abelian varieties modulo rational squares. Our main result shows that every square-free natural number appears as the non square-free part of the Tate--Shafarevich group of some abelian variety, thereby validating a conjecture of W. Stein.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the finite solvable groups with non-complete character degree graphs by proving the following theorem, which generalizes a conjecture by Huppert. Suppose that G is a finite solvable group and p is a prime number dividing the degree of some irreducible character of G. If there is another such prime number q such that pq does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of G, then both p-length lp(G) and q-length lq(G) of G are at most two, and lp(G)+ lq(G)=4 if and only if pq=6 with QG/Zφ(QG)≅ 32:GL(2,3), where QG is generated by all Sylow 2-subgroups of G and Zφ(G) is a normal nilpotent subgroup of G. Moreover, the bounds are best possible.

Abstract:Two finite groups are said to have the same order type if for each positive integer $n$ both groups have the same number of elements of order $n$. In 1987 John G. Thompson asked if in this case the solvability of one group implies the solvability of the other group. In 2024 Pawel Piwek gave a negative example. He constructed two groups of order $2^{365}\cdot3^{105}\cdot7^{104}\approx7.3\cdot10^{247}$ of the same order type, where only one is solvable. In this note we produce a much smaller example of order $2^{13}\cdot3^4\cdot7^3=227598336$.

Abstract:We show that the number of isomorphism classes of left braces of order~$64$ with additive group isomorphic to $C_2\times C_2\times C_4\times C_4$ is $10\,326\,821$. This completes the classification of left braces of order~$64$, that turn out to fall into $15\,095\,601$ isomorphism classes.

A new lower bound for the number of conjugacy classes

Abstract:In 2003, Héthelyi and Külshammer proposed that if $G$ is a finite group and $p$ is a prime dividing the group order, then $k(G)\geq 2\sqrt{p-1}$, and they proved this conjecture for solvable $G$ and showed that it is sharp for those primes $p$ for which $\sqrt{p-1}$ is an integer. This initiated a flurry of activity, leading to many generalizations and variations of the result; in particular, today the conjecture is known to be true for all finite groups. In this note, we put forward a natural new and stronger conjecture, which is sharp for all primes $p$, and we prove it for solvable groups, and when $p$ is large, also for arbitrary groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, semisimple, real Lie group with finite centre, with real rank at least two. B.Deroin and S.Hurtado recently proved the 30-year-old conjecture that no irreducible lattice in $G$ has a left-invariant total order. (Equivalently, they proved that no such lattice has a nontrivial, orientation-preserving action on the real line.) We will explain many of the main ideas of the proof, by using them to prove the analogous result for lattices in $p$-adic semisimple groups. The $p$-adic case is easier, because some of the technical issues do not arise.
