Abstract: In this paper we study arithmetic properties of some permanents, most of which involve trigonometric functions. For example, we prove that for any odd integer $n>1$ we have $$t_n:=\frac1{\sqrt n}\mathrm{per}\left[\tan\pi\frac{jk}n\right]_{1\le j,k\le (n-1)/2}\in\mathbb Z,$$ and that $t_p\equiv(-1)^{(p+1)/2}\pmod p$ for any odd prime $p$. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that for any positive odd integer $n$ we have the identity $$\mathrm{per}\left[\frac1{1+\zeta^{j+k}}\right]_{1\le j,k\le n}=(-1)^{(n-1)/2}\frac{(n!!)^2}{n2^n},$$ where $\zeta$ is any primitive $n$-th root of unity.

Abstract:An example of Cornalba and Shiffman from 1972 disproves in dimension two or higher a classical prediction that the count of zeros of holomorphic self-mappings of the complex linear space should be controlled by the maximum modulus function. We prove that such a bound holds for a modified coarse count inspired by the theory of persistence modules originating in topological data analysis.

Abstract:It is shown how a natural representation of perpetuities as asymptotically homogeneous in space Markov chains allows to prove various asymptotic tail results for stable perpetuities and limit theorems for unstable ones. Some of these results are new while others essentially improve moment conditions known in the literature. Both subexponential and Cramér's cases are considered.

Abstract:The paper discusses Peano's argument for preserving familiar notations. The argument reinforces the principle of permanence, articulated in the early 19th century by Peacock, then adjusted by Hankel and adopted by many others. Typically regarded as a principle of theoretical rationality, permanence was understood by Peano, following Mach, and against Schubert, as a principle of practical rationality. The paper considers how permanence, thus understood, was used in justifying Burali-Forti and Marcolongo's notation for vectorial calculus, and in rejecting Frege's logical notation, and closes by considering Hahn's revival of Peano's argument against Pringsheim' reading of permanence as a logically necessary principle.

Abstract:In this paper, we confirm six conjectures on the exact values of some permanents, relating them to the Genocchi numbers of the first and second kinds as well as the Euler numbers. For example, we prove that per[(sic)2j-k/n(sic)](1 <= j,k <= n) = 2(2(n+1)-1)Bn+1, where B-0, B-1, B-2, . . . are the Bernoulli numbers. We also show that per[sgn(cos pi i+j/n+1)](1 <= i,j <= n) = {-Sigma(m)(k=0)((m)(k))E2k+1 if n = 2m+1, Sigma(m)(k=0)((m)(k))E-2k if n = 2m, where sgn(x) is the sign function, and E-0, E-1, E-2, . . . are the Euler (zigzag) numbers. In the course of linking the evaluation of these permanents to the aforementioned combinatorial sequences, the classical permutation statistic - the excedance number, together with several kinds of its variants, plays a central role. Our approach features recurrence relations, bijections, as well as certain elementary operations on matrices that preserve their permanents. Moreover, our proof of the second permanent identity leads to a proof of Bala's conjectural continued fraction formula, and an unexpected permutation interpretation for the gamma-coefficients of the 2-Eulerian polynomials. gamma- coefficients polynomials. Abstract:The use of persistent homology in applications is justified by the validity of certain stability results. At the core of such results is a notion of distance between the invariants that one associates with data sets. Here we introduce a general framework to compare distances and invariants in multiparameter persistence, where there is no natural choice of invariants and distances between them. We define amplitudes, monotone, and subadditive invariants that arise from assigning a non-negative real number to objects of an abelian category. We then present different ways to associate distances to such invariants, and we provide a classification of classes of amplitudes relevant to topological data analysis. In addition, we study the the relationships as well as the discriminitative power of such amplitude distances arising in topological data analysis scenarios.

The family includes the Dickman distribution, which arises both in number theory and in the analysis of the Quickselect algorithm, which was the motivation for our work.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. We introduce topological conditions on a broad class of functionals that ensure that the persistent homology modules of their associated sublevel set filtration admit persistence diagrams, which, in particular, implies that they satisfy generalized Morse inequalities. We illustrate the applicability of these results by recasting the original proof of the Unstable Minimal Surface Theorem given by Morse and Tompkins in a modern and rigorous framework.

Abstract:Was paper 839 in the author's list until winter 2023 when it was divided into three. Part I: We would like to generalize imaginary elements, weight of ortp$(a,M,N), {\mathbf P}$-weight, ${\mathbf P}$-simple types, etc. from [She90, Ch. III,V,\S4] to the context of good frames. This requires allowing the vocabulary to have predicates and function symbols of infinite arity, but it seemed that we do not suffer any real loss. Part II: Good frames were suggested in [She09d] as the (bare bones) right parallel among a.e.c. to superstable (among elementary classes). Here we consider $(\mu, \lambda, \kappa)$-frames as candidates for being the right parallel to the class of $|T|^+$-saturated models of a stable theory (among elementary classes). A loss as compared to the superstable case is that going up by induction on cardinals is problematic (for cardinals of small cofinality). But this arises only when we try to lift. For this context we investigate the dimension. Part III: In the context of Part II, we consider the main gap problem for the parallel of somewhat saturated model; showing we are not worse than in the first order case.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to explore the ideas of persistent homology and extended persistent homology, and their stability theorems, using ideas from [Bubenik and Scott, 2014; Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer, 2007; and Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer, 2009], as well as other sources. The secondary aim is to explore the homology (and cohomology) of non-orientable surfaces, using the Klein bottle as an example. We also use the Klein bottle as an example for the computation of (extended) persistent homology, referring to it throughout the paper.

Abstract:In this paper we study some determinants and permanents. Exact structures for persistence modules

Abstract:We discuss applications of exact structures and relative homological algebra to the study of invariants of multiparameter persistence modules. This paper is mostly expository, but does contain a pair of novel results. Over finite posets, classical arguments about the relative projective modules of an exact structure make use of Auslander-Reiten theory. One of our results establishes a new adjunction which allows us to "lift" these arguments to certain infinite posets over which Auslander-Reiten theory is not available. We give several examples of this lifting, in particular highlighting the non-existence and existence of resolutions by upsets when working with finitely presentable representations of the plane and of the closure of the positive quadrant, respectively. We then restrict our attention to finite posets. In this setting, we discuss the relationship between the global dimension of an exact structure and the representation dimension of the incidence algebra of the poset. We conclude with our second novel contribution. This is an explicit description of the irreducible morphisms between relative projective modules for several exact structures which have appeared previously in the literature.

The lost proof of Fermat's last theorem

Abstract:This work contains two papers: the first published in 2022 and entitled "On the nature of some Euler's double equations equivalent to Fermat's last theorem" provides a marvellous proof through the so-called discordant forms of appropriate Euler's double equations, which could have entered in a not very narrow margin and the second instead published in 2024 and entitled "Some Diophantus-Fermat double equations equivalent to Frey's elliptic curve" provides the possible proof, which Fermat has not published in detail, but which uses the characteristic of all right-angled triangles with sides equal to whole numbers, or the famous Pythagorean identity. Some explanations in session(III) are provided: the first makes evident the nature of the "proof a' la Fermat" and the subsequent sessions clarify the direct and interesting connection of the two elementary proofs and it is necessary if you want to understand how two different elementary proofs of Fermat's Last Theorem are possible. It must be observed that those proofs must in no way be interpreted as a sort of absurd revenge of elementary number theory over more modern analytic and algebraic treatments.The author himself has added a section in which he connects his concepts with some of those used by Wiles in his complex demonstration.This implies that, to a certain extent, Wiles' demonstration inspired the author of those works. Ultimately in this paper we will illustrate how only thanks to some of Euler's discoveries was it possible to shed light on the so-called too narrow margin never written by Fermat. For this reason we will also provide some details on an article that was the real inspiration for achieving these results (see Last Conclusions).

The occurrence and analysis of these points/loci are shown and basic examples are considered. We discuss the potential usage and properties of introduced concepts. The comparison of perpetual points and loci in discrete--time and continuous--time systems is presented. Discussed methods can be widely applied in other dynamical systems.

Abstract:A persistence module $M$, with coefficients in a field $\mathbb{F}$, is a finite-dimensional linear representation of an equioriented quiver of type $A_n$ or, equivalently, a graded module over the ring of polynomials $\mathbb{F}[x]$. It is well-known that $M$ can be written as the direct sum of indecomposable representations or as the direct sum of cyclic submodules generated by homogeneous elements. An interval basis for $M$ is a set of homogeneous elements of $M$ such that the sum of the cyclic submodules of $M$ generated by them is direct and equal to $M$. We introduce a novel algorithm to compute an interval basis for $M$. Based on a flag of kernels of the structure maps, our algorithm is suitable for parallel or distributed computation and does not rely on a presentation of $M$. This algorithm outperforms the approach via the presentation matrix and Smith Normal Form. We specialize our parallel approach to persistent homology modules, and we close by applying the proposed algorithm to tracking harmonics via Hodge decomposition.

Abstract:We define a class of invariants, which we call homological invariants, for persistence modules over a finite poset. Informally, a homological invariant is one that respects some homological data and takes values in the free abelian group generated by a finite set of indecomposable modules. We focus in particular on groups generated by "spread modules", which are sometimes called "interval modules" in the persistence theory literature. We show that both the dimension vector and rank invariant are equivalent to homological invariants taking values in groups generated by spread modules. We also show that the free abelian group generated by the "single-source" spread modules gives rise to a new invariant which is finer than the rank invariant. They are also thankful to an anonymous referee for their thorough reading of this paper and suggestions for improvement.

Abstract:One-dimensional persistent homology is arguably the most important and heavily used computational tool in topological data analysis. Additional information can be extracted from datasets by studying multi-dimensional persistence modules and by utilizing cohomological ideas, e.g.~the cohomological cup product. In this work, given a single parameter filtration, we investigate a certain 2-dimensional persistence module structure associated with persistent cohomology, where one parameter is the cup-length $\ell\geq0$ and the other is the filtration parameter. This new persistence structure, called the persistent cup module, is induced by the cohomological cup product and adapted to the persistence setting. Furthermore, we show that this persistence structure is stable. By fixing the cup-length parameter $\ell$, we obtain a 1-dimensional persistence module, called the persistent $\ell$-cup module, and again show it is stable in the interleaving distance sense, and study their associated generalized persistence diagrams. In addition, we consider a generalized notion of a persistent invariant, which extends both the rank invariant (also referred to as persistent Betti number), Puuska's rank invariant induced by epi-mono-preserving invariants of abelian categories, and the recently-defined persistent cup-length invariant, and we establish their stability. This generalized notion of persistent invariant also enables us to lift the Lyusternik-Schnirelmann (LS) category of topological spaces to a novel stable persistent invariant of filtrations, called the persistent LS-category invariant.

Olry Terquem's forgotten problem

Abstract:`Terquem's problem' is a name given in the twentieth century to the problem of enumerating certain integer sequences whose entries alternate in parity. In particular, this problem asks for the count of strictly increasing length $m$ sequences of positive integers bounded above by some integer $n$ whose odd-indexed entries are odd and whose even-indexed entries are even. This problem and its generalizations have been well-studied. However, the putative original source for this problem, an 1839 paper by Olry Terquem, is subtly different from the problem that is now attributed to Terquem. In this paper, we highlight this distinction and also make connections between Terquem's `forgotten' problem and the Fibonacci sequence, continuants, Bézout's Lemma, and the extended version of the Euclidean Algorithm.

Abstract:We present the first known solution to the original supertask, the Thomson Lamp Paradox. We also offer preliminary resources for classifying computational complexity of various supertasks. In so doing we consider a newly apparent paradox between the metrical limit and the ordinal limit. We use this distinction between the metrical and ordinal limits to explain the shortcomings both of Thomson's original formulation of the Lamp Paradox and Benacerraf's consequent critique. We resolve this paradox through a careful consideration of transfinite ordinals and locate its ambiguity as inherent to the identity relation under logic with a close reading of Frege's Begriffsschrift. With this close reading in hand we expose how the identity relation is counter-intuitively polyvalent and, with supertasks, how the logico-mathematical field operates on the basis of Deleuzian point-folds. Our results combine resources from philosophy, mathematics, and computer science to ground the field of hypercomputation for logically rigorous study.
