Abstract:This is an exposition of some new results on associated primes and the depth of different kinds of powers of monomial ideals in order to show a deep connection between commutative algebra and some objects in combinatorics such as simplicial complexes, integral points in polytopes and graphs.

Abstract:Symbolic powers are studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. When the ideals are generated by quadratic squarefree monomials, the generators of the symbolic powers are obstructions to vertex covering in the associated graph and its blowups. As a result, perfect graphs play an important role in the theory, dual to the role played by perfect graphs in the theory of secants of monomial ideals. We use Gröbner degenerations as a tool to reduce questions about symbolic powers of arbitrary ideals to the monomial case. Among the applications are a new, unified approach to the Gröbner bases of symbolic powers of determinantal and Pfaffian ideals.

The Multiplicity of Powers of a Class of Non-Square-free Monomial Ideals

Abstract:Let $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$, and let $I \subseteq R$ be a monomial ideal of height $h$. We provide a formula for the multiplicity of the powers of $I$ when all the primary ideals of height $h$ in the irredundant minimal primary decomposition of $I$ are irreducible. This is a generalization of \cite[Theorem 1.1]{TV}. Furthermore, we present a formula for the multiplicity of powers of special powers of monomial ideals that satisfy the aforementioned conditions. Here, the $m$-th special power of a monomial ideal refers to the ideal generated by the $m$-th powers of all its minimal generators. Finally, we explicitly provide a formula for the multiplicity of powers of special powers of edge ideals in vertex-weighted oriented graphs using combinatorial properties.

Abstract:We consider ideals in a polynomial ring generated by collections of power sum polynomials, and obtain conditions under which these define complete intersection rings, normal domains, and unique factorization domains. We also settle a key case of a conjecture of Conca, Krattenthaler, and Watanabe, and prove other results in that direction.

Abstract:In this article, our aim is to extend the class of monomial ideals for which symbolic and ordinary powers coincide. This property has been characterized for the class of edge ideals of simple graphs, and in this article, we study a completely new class of monomial ideals associated to simple graphs, namely the class of generalized edge ideals. We give a complete description of the primary components associated to the minimal associated primes of these ideals. Using this description, and assuming some conditions on the relative weights, we completely characterize the equality of ordinary and symbolic powers of generalized edge ideals. After that, we also characterize generalized edge ideals of the 3-cycle for which this equality holds.

Limit Behavior of the Rational Powers of Monomial Ideals

Abstract:We investigate the rational powers of ideals. We find that in the case of monomial ideals, the canonical indexing leads to a characterization of the rational powers yielding that symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals are indeed rational powers themselves. Using the connection with symbolic powers techniques, we use splittings to show the convergence of depths and normalized Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. We show the convergence of Stanley depths for rational powers, and as a consequence of this we show the before-now unknown convergence of Stanley depths of integral closure powers. In addition, we show the finiteness of asymptotic associated primes, and we find that the normalized lengths of local cohomology modules converge for rational powers, and hence for symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals.

Abstract:In the present paper, we aim to classify monomial ideals whose all matching powers are Cohen-Macaulay. We especially focus our attention on edge ideals. The Cohen-Macaulayness of the last matching power of an edge ideal is characterized, providing an algebraic analogue of the famous Tutte theorem regarding graphs having a perfect matching. For chordal graphs, very well-covered graphs and Cameron-Walker graphs, we completely solve our problem.

Abstract:In this article we first compare the set of elements in the socle of an ideal of a polynomial algebra over a field K that are not in the ideal itself with Macaulay's inverse systems of such polynomial algebras in a purely combinatorial way for monomial ideals, and then develop some closure operational properties for the related poset . We then derive some algebraic propositions of -graded rings (a natural generalization of the usual -grading where is a monoid) that then have some combinatorial consequences. Interestingly, some of the results from this part that uniformly hold for polynomial rings are always false when the ring is local. We finally delve into some direct computations, in relation to a given term order of the monomials, for general zero-dimensional Gorenstein ideals, and we deduce a few explicit observations and results for the inverse systems from some recent results about socles.

Abstract:Recently, H. Dao and R. Nair gave a combinatorial description of simplicial complexes such that the squarefree reduction of the Stanley–Reisner ideal of has the WLP in degree 1 and characteristic zero. In this paper, we apply the connections between analytic spread of equigenerated monomial ideals, mixed multiplicities and birational monomial maps to give a sufficient and necessary condition for the squarefree reduction to satisfy the WLP in degree i and characteristic zero in terms of mixed multiplicities of monomial ideals that contain combinatorial information of , we call them incidence ideals. As a consequence, we give an upper bound to the possible failures of the WLP of in degree i in positive characteristics in terms of mixed multiplicities. Moreover, we extend Dao and Nair's criterion to arbitrary monomial ideals in positive odd characteristics.

Abstract:Freiman's theorem gives a lower bound for the cardinality of the doubling of a finite set in $\RR^n$. In this paper we give an interpretation of his theorem for monomial ideals and their fiber cones. We call a quasi-equigenerated monomial ideal a Freiman ideal, if the set of its exponent vectors achieves Freiman's lower bound for its doubling. Algebraic characterizations of Freiman ideals are given, and finite simple graphs are classified whose edge ideals or matroidal ideals of its cycle matroids are Freiman ideals.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field, let $A$ and $B$ be polynomial rings over $k$, and let $S= A \otimes_k B$. Let $I \subseteq A$ and $J \subseteq B$ be monomial ideals. We establish a binomial expansion for rational powers of $I+J \subseteq S$ in terms of those of $I$ and $J$. Particularly, for a positive rational number $u$, we prove that $(I+J)_u = \sum_{0 \le \omega \le u, \ \omega \in \mathbb{Q}} I_\omega J_{u-\omega},$ and that the sum on the right hand side is a finite sum. This finite sum can be made more precise using jumping numbers of rational powers of $I$ and $J$. We further give sufficient conditions for this formula to hold for the integral closures of powers of $I+J$ in terms of those of $I$ and $J$. Under these conditions, we provide explicit formulas for the depth and regularity of $\overline{(I+J)^k}$ in terms of those of powers of $I$ and $J$.

Abstract:Let G be a graph and let I be its edge ideal. Our main result shows that the sets of associated primes of the powers of I form an ascending chain. It is known that the sets of associated primes of I(i) and intcl(I(i)) stabilize for large i, where "intcl" denotes integral closure and I(i) denotes the i-th power of I. We show that for edge ideals their corresponding stable sets are equal. To show our main result we use a classical result of Berge from matching theory and certain notions from combinatorial optimization.

Some algebraic and combinatorial properties of generalized graph ideals of a strong quasi-n-partite graph are studied. Furthermore, we show that the edge ideal of a strong quasi-n-partite graph is Cohen-Macaulay.

Simplicial Resolutions of Powers of Square-free Monomial Ideals

Abstract:The Taylor resolution is almost never minimal for powers of monomial ideals, even in the square-free case. In this paper we introduce a smaller resolution for each power of any square-free monomial ideal, which depends only on the number of generators of the ideal. More precisely, for every pair of fixed integers $r$ and $q$, we construct a simplicial complex that supports a free resolution of the $r$-th power of any square-free monomial ideal with $q$ generators. The resulting resolution is significantly smaller than the Taylor resolution, and is minimal for special cases. Considering the relations on the generators of a fixed ideal allows us to further shrink these resolutions. We also introduce a class of ideals called "extremal ideals", and show that the Betti numbers of powers of all square-free monomial ideals are bounded by Betti numbers of powers of extremal ideals. Our results lead to upper bounds on Betti numbers of powers of any square-free monomial ideal that greatly improve the binomial bounds offered by the Taylor resolution.

Abstract:Let $I$ be an arbitrary nonzero squarefree monomial ideal of dimension $d$ in a polynomial ring $S = \mathrm{k}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. Let $\mu$ be the number of associated primes of $S/I$ of dimension $d$. We prove that the multiplicity of powers of $I$ is given by $$e_0(S/I^s) = \mu \binom{n-d+s-1}{s-1},$$ for all $s \ge 1$. Consequently, we compute the multiplicity of all powers of path ideals of cycles.

We find an explicit expression of the associated primes of monomial ideals as a colon by an element [math], using the unique irredundant irreducible decomposition whose irreducible components are monomial ideals. An algorithm to compute [math] is given using Macaulay2. For squarefree monomial ideals the problem is related to the combinatorics of the underlying clutter or graph. For ideals of Borel type, the monomial [math] takes a simpler form, and we classify when [math] is unique.
