Abstract:We consider, for $h, E > 0$, resolvent estimates for the semiclassical Schrödinger operator $-h^2 \Delta + V - E$. Near infinity, the potential takes the form $V = V_L+ V_S$, where $V_L$ is a long range potential which is Lipschitz with respect to the radial variable, while $V_S = O(|x|^{-1} (\log |x|)^{-\rho})$ for some $\rho > 1$. Near the origin, $|V|$ may behave like $|x|^{-\beta}$, provided $0 \le \beta < 2(\sqrt{3} -1)$. We find that, for any $\tilde{\rho} > 1$, there are $C, \, h_0 >0$ such that we have a resolvent bound of the form $\exp(Ch^{-2} (\log(h^{-1}))^{1 + \tilde{\rho}})$ for all $h \in (0, h_0]$. The $h$-dependence of the bound improves if $V_S$ decays at a faster rate toward infinity.

Abstract:Reviews in Mathematical Physics, Ahead of Print. We establish semiclassical resolvent estimates for Schrödinger operators with long-range matrix-valued potentials. As an application, we prove a resonance-free domain in trapping situations. These results generalize the well-known results of [4] [N. Burq, Lower bounds for shape resonances widths of long range Schrödinger operators, Amer. J. Math. 124(4) (2002) 677–735] in the case of scalar Schrödinger operators. In addition, we give an estimate on the scattering amplitude for Schrödinger operators with compactly supported matrix-valued potentials.

Abstract:We study the $L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^d)$ boundedness for Riesz transforms of the form ${V^{a}(-\frac12\Delta+V)^{-a}},$ where $a > 0$ and $V$ is a non-negative potential with power growth acting independently on each coordinate. We factorize the semigroup $e^{-tL}$ into one-dimensional factors, estimate them separately and combine the results to estimate the original semigroup. Similar results with additional assumption $a \leqslant 1$ are obtained on $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$.

Abstract:We prove upper bounds on the number of resonances and eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators $-\Delta+V$ with complex-valued potentials, where $d\geq 3$ is odd. The novel feature of our upper bounds is that they are \emph{effective}, in the sense that they only depend on an exponentially weighted norm of V. Our main focus is on potentials in the Lorentz space $L^{(d+1)/2,1/2}$, but we also obtain new results for compactly supported or pointwise decaying potentials. The main technical innovation, possibly of independent interest, are singular value estimates for Fourier-extension type operators. The obtained upper bounds not only recover several known results in a unified way, they also provide new bounds for potentials which are not amenable to previous methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the semilinear wave equations with the inverse-square potential. By transferring the original equation to a "fractional dimensional" wave equation and analyzing the properties of its fundamental solution, we establish a long-time existence result, for sufficiently small, spherically symmetric initial data. Together with the previously known blow-up result, we determine the critical exponent which divides the global existence and finite time blow-up. Moreover, the sharp lower bounds of the lifespan are obtained, except for certain borderline case. In addition, our technology allows us to handle an extreme case for the potential, which has hardly been discussed in literature.
Conditions for semi-boundedness and discreteness of the spectrum to Schrödinger operator and some nonlinear PDEs

Abstract:For Schrödinger operator $H=-\Delta+ V({\mathbf x})\cdot$, acting in the space $L_2(\mathbb R^d)\,(d\ge 3)$, necessary and sufficient conditions for semi-boundedness and discreteness of its spectrum.are obtained without assumption that the potential $V({\mathbf x})$ is bounded below. By reduction of the problem to investigation of existence of regular solutions for Riccati PDE necessary conditions for discreteness of the spectrum of operator $H$ are obtained under assumption that it is bounded below. These results are similar to ones obtained by author in \cite{Zel} for the one-dimensional case. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for the semi-boundedness and discreteness of the spectrum of $H$ are obtained in terms of a non-increasing rearrangement, mathematical expectation and standard deviation from the latter for positive part $V_+({\mathbf x})$ of the potential $V({\mathbf x})$ on compact domains that go to infinity, under certain restrictions for its negative part $V_-({\mathbf x})$. Choosing in an optimal way the vector field associated with difference between the potential $V({\mathbf x})$ and its mathematical expectation on the balls that go to infinity, we obtain a condition for semi-boundedness and discreteness of the spectrum for $H$ in terms of solutions of Neumann problem for nonhomogeneous $d/(d-1)$-Laplace equation. This type of optimization refers to a divergence constrained transportation problem.

Abstract:We consider an inverse problem of recovering a potential associated to a semi-linear wave equation with a quadratic nonlinearity in $1 + 1$ dimensions. We develop a numerical scheme to determine the potential from a noisy Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the lateral boundary. The scheme is based on the recent higher order linearization method [20]. We also present an approach to numerically estimating two-dimensional derivatives of noisy data via Tikhonov regularization. The methods are tested using synthetic noisy measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Various examples of reconstructions of the potential functions are given.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to revisit the proof of the Gearhardt–Prüss–Huang–Greiner theorem for a semigroup S ( t ), following the general idea of the proofs that we have seen in the literature and to get an explicit estimate on the operator norm of S ( t ) in terms of bounds on the resolvent of the generator. In Helffer and Sjöstrand (From resolvent bounds to semigroup bounds. ArXiv:1001.4171v1, math. FA, 2010) by the first two authors, this was done and some applications in semiclassical analysis were given. Some of these results have been subsequently published in three books written by the two first authors Helffer (Spectral theory and its applications. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2013) and Sjöstrand (Lecture notes : Spectral properties of non-self-adjoint operators. Journées équations aux dérivées partielles (2009), article no. 1), (Non self-adjoint differential operators, spectral asymptotics and random perturbations. Pseudo-differential Operators and Applications, Birkhäuser (2018)). A second work Helffer and Sjöstrand (Integral Equ Oper Theory 93(3), 2021) presents new improvements partially motivated by a paper of Wei (Sci China Math 64:507–518, 2021). In this third paper, we continue the discussion on whether the aforementioned results are optimal, and whether one can improve these results through iteration. Numerical computations will illustrate some of the abstract results.

Abstract:We prove a universal bound for the number of negative eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators with Neumann boundary conditions on bounded Hölder domains, under suitable assumptions on the Hölder exponent and the external potential. Our bound yields the same semiclassical behaviour as the Weyl asymptotics for smooth domains. We also discuss different cases where Weyl's law holds and fails.

Abstract:We prove a weighted Carleman estimate for a class of one-dimensional, self-adjoint Schrödinger operators $P(h)$ with low regularity electric and magnetic potentials, where $h > 0$ is a semiclassical parameter. The long range part of either potential has bounded variation. The short range part of the magnetic potential belongs to $L^1(\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{R}) \cap L^2(\mathbb{R})$, while the short range part of the electric potential is a finite signed measure. The proof is a one dimensional instance of the energy method, which is used to prove Carleman estimates in higher dimensions and in more complicated geometries. The novelty of our result lies in the weak regularity assumptions on the coefficients. As a consequence of the Carleman estimate, we establish an optimal limiting absorption resolvent estimates for $P(h)$. We also present standard applications to the distribution of resonances for $P(1)$ and to associated evolution equations.

Abstract:We quantify the subcriticality of the bilaplacian in dimensions greater than four by providing explicit repulsivity/smallness conditions on complex additive perturbations under which the spectrum remains stable. Our assumptions cover critical Rellich-type potentials too. As a byproduct we obtain uniform resolvent estimates in weighted spaces. Some of the results are new also in the self-adjoint setting.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the $L^p$ regularity, $L^p$ Neumann and $W^{1,p}$ problems for generalized Schrödinger operator $-\text{div}(A\nabla )+ V $ in the region above a Lipschitz graph under the assumption that $A$ is elliptic, symmetric and $x_d-$independent. Specifically, we prove that the $L^p$ regularity problem is uniquely solvable for $$1<p<2+\varepsilon.$$ Moreover, we also establish the $W^{1,p}$ estimate for Neumann problem for $$\frac{3}{2}-\varepsilon<p<3+\varepsilon.$$ As a by-product, we also obtain that the $L^p$ Neumann problem is uniquely solvable for $1<p<2+\varepsilon.$ The only previously known estimates of this type pertain to the classical Schrödinger equation $-\Delta u+ Vu=0$ in $\Omega$ and $\frac{\partial u}{\partial n}=g$ on $\partial\Omega$ which was obtained by Shen [Z. Shen, On the Neumann problem for Schrödinger operators in Lipschitz domains, Indiana Univ. Math. J. 43 (1994)] for ranges $1<p\leq 2$. All the ranges of $p$ are sharp.

Abstract:We establish global bounds for solutions to stationary and time-dependent Schrödinger equations associated with the sublaplacian $\mathcal L$ on the Heisenberg group, as well as its pure fractional power $\mathcal L^s$ and conformally invariant fractional power $\mathcal L_s$. The main ingredient is a new abstract uniform weighted resolvent estimate which is proved by using the method of weakly conjugate operators -- a variant of Mourre's commutator method -- and Hardy's type inequalities on the Heisenberg group. As applications, we show Kato-type smoothing effects for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and spectral stability of the sublaplacian perturbed by complex-valued decaying potentials satisfying an explicit subordination condition. In the local case $s=1$, we obtain uniform estimates without any symmetry or derivative loss, which improve previous results.

Resonances and inverse problems for energy-dependent potentials on the half-line

Abstract:We consider Schrödinger equations with linearly energy-depending potentials which are compactly supported on the half-line. We first provide estimates of the number of eigenvalues and resonances for such complex-valued potentials under suitable regularity assumptions. Then, we consider a specific class of energy-dependent Schrödinger equations without eigenvalues, defined with Miura potentials and boundary conditions at the origin. We solve the inverse resonance problem in this case and describe sets of iso-resonance potentials and boundary condition parameters. Our strategy consists in exploiting a correspondance between Schrödinger and Dirac equations on the half-line. As a byproduct, we describe similar sets for Dirac operators and show that the scattering problem for Schrödinger equation or Dirac operator with an arbitrary boundary condition can be reduced to the scattering problem with the Dirichlet boundary condition.

Well-posedness and long-time behavior for self-consistent Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations with general potentials

Abstract:We study the well-posedness, steady states and long time behavior of solutions to Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation with external confinement potential and nonlinear self-consistent interactions. Our analysis introduces newly characterized conditions on the interaction kernel that ensure the local asymptotic stability of the unique steady state. Compared to previous works on this topic, our results allow for large, singular and non-symmetric interactions. As a corollary of our main results, we show exponential decay of solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation in dimension $3$, for low regularity initial data. In the repulsive case, the result holds in strongly nonlinear regimes (\emph{i.e.} for arbitrarily small Debye length). Our techniques rely on the design of new Lyapunov functionals based on hypocoercivity and hypoellipticity theories. We use norms which include part of the interaction kernel, and carefully mix ``macroscopic quantities based''--hypocoercivity with ``commutators based''--hypocoercivity.
