Abstract:We observe that the fully nonlinear evolution equations of Rosenau and Hymann, often abbreviated as $K(n,\,m)$ equations, can be reduced to Hamiltonian form only on a zero-energy hypersurface belonging to some potential function associated with the equations. We treat the resulting Hamiltonian equations by the dynamical systems theory and present a phase-space analysis of their stable points. The results of our study demonstrate that the equations can, in general, support both compacton and soliton solutions. For the $K(2,\,2)$ and $K(3,\,3)$ cases one type of solutions can be obtained from the other by continuously varying a parameter of the equations. This is not true for the $K(3,\,2)$ equation for which the parameter can take only negative values. The $K(2,\,3)$ equation does not have any stable point and, in the language of mechanics, represents a particle moving with constant acceleration.

Abstract:The system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations has wide applications in physics. In the past, the main attention has been their solitary waves. Here we turn our attention to their periodic wave solutions. In this paper, the stability of the periodic solutions is studied analytically and the criteria for the stability are obtained. The long time evolution of the solutions to the coupled system is studied numerically for the unstable case emphasizing wave–wave interactions in nonlinear optics. Different kinds of evolution are observed depending on the coefficients of the system and the parameters of the unperturbed waves and perturbation. For certain ranges of parameters, the evolution appears to be periodic, while for some other ranges of parameters, solitary wave or solitary wave pairs can be excited among the irregular background although often the evolution is completely chaotic.

Exactly Solvable and Integrable Systems

Abstract:We present a method to solve initial-boundary value problems for linear and integrable nonlinear differential-difference evolution equations. The method is the discrete version of the one developed by A. S. Fokas to solve initial-boundary value problems for linear and integrable nonlinear partial differential equations via an extension of the inverse scattering transform. The method takes advantage of the Lax pair formulation for both linear and nonlinear equations, and is based on the simultaneous spectral analysis of both parts of the Lax pair. A key role is also played by the global algebraic relation that couples all known and unknown boundary values. Even though additional technical complications arise in discrete problems compared to continuum ones, we show that a similar approach can also solve initial-boundary value problems for linear and integrable nonlinear differential-difference equations. We demonstrate the method by solving initial-boundary value problems for the discrete analogue of both the linear and the nonlinear Schrodinger equations, comparing the solution to those of the corresponding continuum problems. In the linear case we also explicitly discuss Robin-type boundary conditions not solvable by Fourier series. In the nonlinear case we also identify the linearizable boundary conditions, we discuss the elimination of the unknown boundary datum, we obtain explicitly the linear and continuum limit of the solution, and we write down the soliton solutions.

Abstract:An isospectral problem and the associated hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations is presented. As a reduction, a new generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is obtained. It is shown that the hierarchy possesses bi-Hamiltonian structure and is integrable in Liouville sense. Moreover, the eigenvalue problem can be nonlinearized as a finite-dimensional completely integrable system under the Bargmann constraint between the potentials and the eigenvalues.

Abstract:We prove the existence of periodic solutions in a class of nonlinear partial differential equations, including the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the nonlinear wave equation, and the nonlinear beam equation, in higher dimension. Our result covers cases of completely resonant equations, where the bifurcation equation is infinite-dimensional, such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with zero mass, for which solutions which at leading order are wave packets are shown to exist.

Abstract:Application of the shallow water waves in environmental engineering and hydraulic engineering is seen. In this paper, a (3+1)-dimensional generalized nonlinear evolution equation (gNLEE) for the shallow water waves is investigated. The Nth-order Wronskian, Gramian and Pfaffian solutions are proved, where N is a positive integer. Soliton solutions are constructed from the Nth-order Wronskian, Gramian and Pfaffian solutions. Moreover, we analyze the second-order solitons with the influence of the coefficients in the equation and illustrate them with graphs. Through the Hirota-Riemann method, one-periodic-wave solutions are derived. Relationship between the one-periodic-wave solutions and one-soliton solutions is investigated, which shows that the one-periodic-wave solutions can approach to the one-soliton solutions under certain conditions. We reduce the (3+1)-dimensional gNLEE to a two-dimensional planar dynamic system. Based on the qualitative analysis, we give the phase portraits of the dynamic system.

Abstract:For the 2+1 dimensional three-wave equation, by using the known nonlinear constraints from 2+1 dimensions to 1+1 dimensions, we reduce it further to 0+1 dimensional (finite dimensional) Hamiltonian systems with constraints of Neumann type. These Hamiltonian systems are proved to be Lionville integrable by finding a full set of involutive conserved integrals and proving their functional independence. Moreover, almost-periodic solutions of the 2+1 dimensional three-wave equation are obtained by solving these Hamiltonian systems explicitly.

Abstract:We introduce an integrable Hamiltonian system which Lax deforms the Dirac operator D=d+d* on a finite simple graph or compact Riemannian manifold. We show that the nonlinear isospectral deformation always leads to an expansion of the original space, featuring a fast inflationary start. The nonlinear evolution leaves the Laplacian L=D^2 invariant so that linear Schroedinger or wave dynamics is not affected. The expansion has the following effects: a complex structure can develop and the nonlinear quantum mechanics asymptotically becomes the linear relativistic Dirac wave equation u''=Lu. While the later is not aware of the expansion of space and does not see the emerged complex structure, nor the larger non-commutative geometric setup, the nonlinear flow is affected by it. The natural Noether symmetries of quantum mechanics introduced here force to consider space as part of a larger complex geometry. The nonlinear evolution equation is a symmetry of quantum mechanics which still features super-symmetry, but it becomes clear why it is invisible: while the McKean-Singer formulas str(exp(i D(t) t)) = str(exp(-L t))=chi(G) still hold, the super-partners f,Df are orthogonal only at t=0 and become parallel or anti-parallel for |t| to infinity.
On an intercritical log-modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation in two spatial dimensions

Abstract:We consider a dispersive equation of Schr{ö}dinger type with a non-linearity slightly larger than cubic by a logarithmic factor. This equation is supposed to be an effective model for stable two dimensional quantum droplets with LHY correction. Mathematically, it is seen to be mass supercritical and energy subcritical with a sign-indefinite nonlinearity. For the corresponding initial value problem, we prove global in-time existence of strong solutions in the energy space. Furthermore, we prove the existence and uniqueness (up to symmetries) of nonlinear ground states and the orbital stability of the set of energy minimizers. We also show that for the corresponding model in 1D a stronger stability result is available.

Abstract:In this study, the (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear evolution equation is investigated analytically which have several applications including plasma, control theory, shallow water wave propagation, optical switching, fluid mechanics, engineering, optical computing, communication, and signal processing. Initially, the Hirota bilinear approach is used to develop the bilinear version of the higher dimensional nonlinear model. Consequently, we are able to design periodic wave soliton solutions, lump wave and single-kink soliton solutions, and collisions between lumps and periodic waves. Later on, the unified technique is applied to develop several new travelling wave solutions for the governing model substantially. Furthermore, numerous exact solutions are analyzed graphically to explore many fascinating nonlinear dynamical structures with the aid of 3D, contour, and 2D visualizations. A variety of higher dimensional nonlinear evolution models can also be investigated by employing present approaches arising in many fields of contemporary science and technology.

Abstract:There are many evolution partial differential equations which can be cast into Hamiltonian form. Conservation laws of these equations are related to one-parameter Hamiltonian symmetries admitted by the PDEs. The same result holds for semidiscrete Hamiltonian equations. In this paper we consider semidiscrete canonical Hamiltonian equations. Using symmetries, we find conservation laws for the semidiscretized nonlinear wave equation and Schrodinger equation.

Abstract:This paper surveys recent progress in the analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations using Anderson localization and semi-algebraic sets method. We discuss the application of these tools from linear analysis to nonlinear equations such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equations, the nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations (nonlinear wave equations), and the nonlinear random Schrödinger equations on the lattice. We also review the related linear time-dependent problems.

Abstract:We consider the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with non-local derivatives in a two-dimensional periodic domain. For certain orders of derivatives, we find a new type of breather solution dominating the field evolution at low nonlinearity levels. With the increase of nonlinearity, the breathers break down, giving way to wave turbulence (or Rayleigh-Jeans) spectra. Phase-space trajectories associated with the breather solutions are found to be close to that of the linear system, revealing a connection between the breather solution and Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory.

Abstract:We study semi-linear evolutionary problems where the linear part is the generator of a positive $C_0$-semigroup. The non-linear part is assumed to be quasi-increasing. Given an initial value in between a sub- and a super-solution of the stationary problem we find a solution of the semi-linear evolutionary problem. Convergence as $t\to\infty$ is also studied for the solutions. Our results are applied to the logistic equation with diffusion, to a Lotka-Volterra competition model and the Fisher equation from population genetics.

Abstract:Based a spectral problem with an arbitrary parameter and Lenard operator pairs, we derive a generalized Kaup–Newell type hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations, which is explicitly related to many important equations such as the Kundu equation, the Kaup–Newell (KN) equation, the Chen–Lee–Liu (CLL) equation, the Gerdjikov–Ivanov (GI) equation, the Burgers equation, the MKdV equation and the Sharma–Tasso–Olver equation. Furthermore, the separation of variables for x- and tm-constrained flows of the the generalized Kaup–Newell hierarchy is shown. Especially the Kundu, KN, CLL and GI equations are uniformly decomposed into systems of solvable ordinary differential equations. A hyperelliptic Riemann surface and Abel–Jacobi coordinates are introduced to straighten the associated flow, from which the algebro-geometric solutions of these equations are explicitly constructed in terms of the Riemann theta functions by standard Jacobi inversion technique.

Abstract:We consider the initial value problem for the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation with double nonlinearities (DINLS) \begin{equation*} i \partial_t u + \Delta u = \lambda_1 |x|^{-b_1}|u|^{p_1}u + \lambda_2|x|^{-b_2}|u|^{\frac{4-2b_2}{N-2}}u, \end{equation*} where $\lambda_1,\lambda_2\in \mathbb{R}$, $3\leq N<6$ and $0<b_1,b_2<\min\{2,\frac{6-N}{2}\}$. In this paper, we establish global well-posedness results for certain parameter regimes and prove finite-time blow-up phenomena under specific conditions. Our analysis relies on stability theory, energy estimates, and virial identities adapted to the DINLS model.

Abstract:We study the Hamiltonian formalism for second order and fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equations. In the case of second order equation, we consider cubic and logarithmic nonlinearities. Since the Lagrangians generating these nonlinear equations are degenerate, we follow the Dirac-Bergmann formalism to construct their corresponding Hamiltonians. In order to obtain consistent equations of motion, the Dirac-Bergmann formalism imposes some set of constraints which contribute to the total Hamiltonian along with their Lagrange multipliers. The order of the Lagrangian degeneracy determines the number of the primary constraints. Multipliers are determined by the time consistency of constraints. If a constraint is not a constant of motion, a secondary constraint is introduced to force the consistency. We show that for both second order nonlinear Schrödinger equations we only have primary constraints, and the form of nonlinearity does not change the constraint dynamics of the system. However, introducing a higher order dispersion changes the constraint dynamics and secondary constraints are needed to construct a consistent Hamilton equations of motion.

Abstract:Olver and Rosenau studied group-invariant solutions of (generally nonlinear) partial differential equations through the imposition of a side condition. We apply a similar idea to the special case of finite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems, namely Hamilton-Jacobi, Helmholtz and time-independent Schrödinger equations with potential on $N$-dimensional Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, but with a linear side condition, where more structure is available. We show that the requirement of $N-1$ commuting second-order symmetry operators, modulo a second-order linear side condition corresponds to nonregular separation of variables in an orthogonal coordinate system, characterized by a generalized Stäckel matrix. The coordinates and solutions obtainable through true nonregular separation are distinct from those arising through regular separation of variables. We develop the theory for these systems and provide examples.
