Abstract:Let π be a minimal Erdös-Szekeres permutation of 1, 2, ..., n 2 , and let l n,k be the length of the longest increasing subsequence in the segment ( π (1), ..., π ( k )). Under uniform measure we establish an exponentially decaying bound of the upper tail probability for l n,k , and as a consequence we obtain a complete convergence, which is an improvement of Romik’s recent result. We also give a precise lower exponential tail for l n,k .

Abstract:We study the problem of finding a longest common increasing subsequence (LCIS) of multiple sequences of numbers. The LCIS problem is a fundamental issue in various application areas, including the whole genome alignment and pattern recognition. In this paper we give an efficient algorithm to find the LCIS of two sequences in O(min(r logℓ, nℓ + r)loglog n + n log n) time where n is the length of each sequence and r is the total number of ordered pairs of positions at which the two sequences match and ℓ is the length of the LCIS. For m sequences where m ≥ 3, we find the LCIS in O(min(mr 2,mr log ℓlog m r) + mnlog n) time where r is the total number of m-tuples of positions at which the m sequences match. The previous results find the LCIS of two sequences in O(n 2) and O(n ℓ log n) time. Our algorithm is faster when r is relatively small, e.g., for r < min(n 2/loglogn,nℓ).

Abstract:In this paper, first, we answer affirmatively an open problem which was presented in 2005 by professor Gudder on the sub-sequential effect algebras. That is, we prove that if (E, 0, 1, circle plus, o) is a sequential effect algebra and A is a commutative subset of E, then the sub-sequential effect algebra (A) over bar generated by A is also commutative. Next, we also study the following uniqueness problem: If na = nb = c for some positive integer n >= 2, then under what conditions a = b hold? We prove that if c is a sharp element of E and a vertical bar b, then a = b. We give also two examples to show that neither of the above two conditions can be discarded.

Abstract:In the above paper (H. H. Choi, IEEE Trans. Automat. Contr., vol. 46, pp. 504-8, 2001), new methods to obtain upper matrix bounds for a discrete algebraic Riccati equation (DARE) have been established, but the author assumes that the system matrix A is nonsingular and DARE has a positive-definite solution. In this note, some similar results can be obtained when a solution is positive-semidefinite and there are no extra assumption that A is nonsingular. In reply the original author explains some of the underlying assumptions and comments on the computational burdens in the inequality in the commenters' note.
Limit Theorems for Longest Monotone Subsequences in Random Mallows Permutations

Abstract:We study the lengths of monotone subsequences for permutations drawn from the Mallows measure. The Mallows measure was introduced by Mallows in connection with ranking problems in statistics. Under this measure, the probability of a permutation $\pi$ is proportional to $q^{{\rm inv}(\pi)}$ where $q$ is a positive parameter and ${\rm inv}(\pi)$ is the number of inversions in $\pi$. In our main result we show that when $0<q<1$, the limiting distribution of the longest increasing subsequence (LIS) is Gaussian, answering an open question in [Bhatnagar and Peled, PTRF, 2015]. This is in contrast to the case when $q=1$ where the limiting distribution of the LIS when scaled appropriately is the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. We also obtain a law of large numbers for the length of the longest decreasing subsequence (LDS) and identify the precise constant in the order of the expectation, answering a further open question in [Bhatnagar and Peled, PTRF, 2015].

Improved Lower Bounds on the Expected Length of Longest Common Subsequences

Abstract:It has been proven that, when normalized by $n$, the expected length of a longest common subsequence of $d$ random strings of length $n$ over an alphabet of size $\sigma$ converges to some constant that depends only on $d$ and $\sigma$. These values are known as the Chvátal-Sankoff constants, and determining their exact values is a well-known open problem. Upper and lower bounds are known for some combinations of $\sigma$ and $d$, with the best lower and upper bounds for the most studied case, $\sigma=2, d=2$, at $0.788071$ and $0.826280$, respectively. Building off previous algorithms for lower-bounding the constants, we implement runtime optimizations, parallelization, and an efficient memory reading and writing scheme to obtain an improved lower bound of $0.792665992$ for $\sigma=2, d=2$. We additionally improve upon almost all previously reported lower bounds for the Chvátal-Sankoff constants when either the size of alphabet, the number of strings, or both are larger than 2.

Abstract:We study the distribution of the length of longest increasing subsequences in random permutations of n integers as n grows large and establish an asymptotic expansion in powers of . Whilst the limit law was already shown by Baik, Deift and Johansson to be the GUE Tracy–Widom distribution F, we find explicit analytic expressions of the first few finite-size correction terms as linear combinations of higher order derivatives of F with rational polynomial coefficients. Our proof replaces Johansson's de-Poissonization, which is based on monotonicity as a Tauberian condition, by analytic de-Poissonization of Jacquet and Szpankowski, which is based on growth conditions in the complex plane; it is subject to a tameness hypothesis concerning complex zeros of the analytically continued Poissonized length distribution. In a preparatory step an expansion of the hard-to-soft edge transition law of LUE is studied, which is lifted to an expansion of the Poissonized length distribution for large intensities. Finally, expansions of Stirling-type approximations and of the expected value and variance of the length distribution are given.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and $S$ a sequence with elements of $G$. Let $|S|$ denote the length of $S$ and $\mathrm{supp}(S)$ the set of all the distinct terms in $S$. For an integer $k$ with $k\in [1, |S|]$, let $\Sigma_{k}(S) \subset G$ denote the set of group elements which can be expressed as a sum of a subsequence of $S$ with length $k$. Let $\Sigma(S)=\cup_{k=1}^{|S|}\Sigma_{k}(S)$ and $\Sigma_{\geq k}(S)=\cup_{t=k}^{|S|}\Sigma_{t}(S)$. It is known that if $0\not\in \Sigma(S)$, then $|\Sigma(S)|\geq |S|+|\mathrm{supp}(S)|-1$. In this paper, we determine the structure of a sequence $S$ satisfying $0\notin \Sigma(S)$ and $|\Sigma(S)|= |S|+|\mathrm{supp}(S)|-1$. As a consequence, we can give a counterexample of a conjecture of Gao, Grynkiewicz, and Xia. Moreover, we prove that if $|S|>k$ and $0\not\in \Sigma_{\geq k}(S)\cup \mathrm{supp}(S)$, then $|\Sigma_{\geq k}(S)|\geq |S|-k+|\mathrm{supp}(S)|$. Then we can give an alternative proof of a conjecture of Hamidoune, which was first proved by Gao, Grynkiewicz, and Xia.

Abstract:For a set of positive integers D , a k -term D -diffsequence is a sequence of positive integers a1 such that ai−ai−1∈D for i=2,3,...,k . For k∈Z+ and D⊂Z+ , we define Δ(D,k) , if it exists, to be the smallest integer n such that every 2-coloring of {1,2,...,n} contains a monochromatic D -diffsequence of length k . We improve the lower bound on Δ(D,k) where D={2i|i∈Z≥0} , proving a conjecture of Chokshi, Clifton, Landman, and Sawin. We also determine all sets D={d1,d2,...} satisfying ∀i∈Z+,di|di+1 for which Δ(D,k) exists for all k∈Z+ .

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study a statistic that is used to compare the similarity between two strings, which is first introduced by Michael Steele in 1982. It was proposed as an alternative to the length of the longest common subsequences, for which the variance problem is still open. Our results include moment asymptotics and distributional asymptotics for Steele's statistic and a variation of it in random words and random permutations.
The weakness of finding descending sequences in ill-founded linear orders

Abstract:We explore the Weihrauch degree of the problems ``find a bad sequence in a non-well quasi order'' ($\mathsf{BS}$) and ``find a descending sequence in an ill-founded linear order'' ($\mathsf{DS}$). We prove that $\mathsf{DS}$ is strictly Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{BS}$, correcting our mistaken claim in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.03840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.03840">arXiv:2010.03840</a>]. This is done by separating their respective first-order parts. On the other hand, we show that $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ have the same finitary and deterministic parts, confirming that $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ have very similar uniform computational strength. We prove that König's lemma $\mathsf{KL}$ and the problem $\mathsf{wList}_{2^{\mathbb{N}},\leq\omega}$ of enumerating a given non-empty countable closed subset of $2^{\mathbb{N}}$ are not Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{DS}$ or $\mathsf{BS}$, resolving two main open questions raised in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.03840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.03840">arXiv:2010.03840</a>]. We also answer the question, raised in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1804.10968" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.10968">arXiv:1804.10968</a>], on the existence of a ``parallel quotient'' operator, and study the behavior of $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ under the quotient with some known problems.

Abstract:Patience Sort sorts a sequence of numbers with a minimal number of queues that work according to the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) principle. More precisely, if the length of the longest descreasing subsequence of the input sequence is $L$, then Patience Sort uses $L$ queues. We ask how much one can improve order with $k$ queues, where $k < L$? We address this question for two measures of sortedness: number of down-steps and length of the longest descreasing subsequence. For the first measure, we give an optimal algorithm. For the second measure, we give an algorithm that reduces the LDS from $L$ to $L - k + 1$, and we provide a sequence with LDS $L$ that can't be reduced to an LDS lower than $L - k + 1$ with $k$ queues. Moreover, we study the mergeability of two sequences of numbers, providing an optimal linear algorithm for two queues with LDS $\leq 2$. The research was inspired by a problem arising in car manufacturing.

Abstract:We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the longest increasing/non-decreasing subsequences in a random uniform multiset permutation in which each element in {1,...,n} occurs k times, where k may depend on n. This generalizes the famous Ulam-Hammersley problem of the case k=1. The proof relies on poissonization and a connection with variants of the Hammersley-Aldous-Diaconis particle system.

Abstract:Due to the increased availability of large datasets of biological sequences, the tools for sequence comparison are now relying on efficient alignment-free approaches to a greater extent. Most of the alignment-free approaches require the computation of statistics of the sequences in the dataset. Such computations become impractical in internal memory when very large collections of long sequences are considered. In this paper, we present a new conceptual data structure, the colored longest common prefix array (cLCP), that allows to efficiently tackle several problems with an alignment-free approach. In fact, we show that such a data structure can be computed via sequential scans in semi-external memory. By using cLCP, we propose an efficient lightweight strategy to solve the multi-string Average Common Substring (ACS) problem, that consists in the pairwise comparison of a single string against a collection of $m$ strings simultaneously, in order to obtain $m$ ACS induced distances. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our approach.
