Abstract:Helicity is a fundamental property of Dirac fermions. Yet, the general rule of how it changes in transport is still lacking. We uncover, theoretically, the universal spinor state transformation and consequently helicity redistribution rule in two cases of transport through potentials of electrostatic and mass types, respectively. The former is dictated by Lorentz boost and its complex counterpart in Klein tunneling regime, which establishes miraculously a unified yet latent connection between helicity, Klein tunneling, and Lorentz boost. The latter is governed by an abstract rotation group we construct, which reduces to SO(2) when acting on the plane of effective mass and momentum. They generate invariant submanifolds, i.e., leaves, that foliate the Hilbert space of Dirac spinors. Our results provide a basis for unified understanding of helicity transport, and may open a new window for exotic helicity-based physics and applications in mesoscopic systems.

Abstract:The planar dynamics of spin-1/2 quantum relativistic particles is important for several physical systems. In this paper we derive, by a simple method, the generators for the continuous symmetries of the 3+1 Dirac equation for planar motion, when there is circular symmetry, i.e., the interactions depend only on the radial coordinate. We consider a general set of potentials with different Lorentz structures. These generators allow for several minimal complete sets of commuting observables and their corresponding quantum numbers. We show how they can be used to label the general eigenspinors for this problem. We also derive the generators of the spin and pseudospin symmetries for this planar Dirac problem, which arise when the vector and scalar potentials have the same magnitude and tensor potential and the space components of the four-vector potential are absent. We investigate the associated energy degeneracies and compare them to the known degeneracies in the spherically symmetric 3+1 Dirac equation.

Abstract:. The spin symmetry in antinucleon spectra of a nucleus is tested by investigating the relations between the Dirac wave functions of the spin doublets and examining these relations in realistic nuclei within the relativistic mean-field model. In addition to the fact that the dominant components of the Dirac spinors of the spin doublet are nearly identical to each other, there is a differential relation between the smaller components which is found to be almost exactly fulfilled.

Abstract:We discuss spin and pseudo-spin symmetry in the spectrum of single nucleons and single anti- nucleons in a nucleus. As an example we use relativistic mean field theory to investigate single anti-nucleon spectra. We find a very well developed spin symmetry in single anti-neutron and single anti-proton spectra. The dominant components of the wave functions of the spin doublet are almost identical. This spin symmetry in anti-particle spectra and the pseudo-spin symmetry in particle spectra have the same origin. However it turns out that the spin symmetry in anti-nucleon spectra is much better developed than the pseudo-spin symmetry in normal nuclear single particle spectra.

Abstract:In this paper we use the so-called spinor-helicity formalism to represent three-vectors in terms of the Pauli matrices and derive a generalized relativistic wave equation for a massive fermion of spin one-half. We thus extend the Dirac equation by making use of the Pauli-Lubański operator that includes isospin explicitly. As a consequence, we get new degrees of freedom related to isospin helicity, in addition to the two standard ones of the Dirac equation that are associated with the kinetic spin-helicity doublet and the particle-antiparticle pair. Formally, isospin helicity has degrees of freedom for an arbitrary general isospin s and has the eigenvalues s and , and thus it reveals a kind of hidden symmetry in any isospin field. The resulting four degrees of freedom for isospin 1/2 are interpreted as being associated with two independent subspaces of dimension 1 related to the U (1) and 3 related to SU (3) symmetry, i.e. to the leptons and quarks.

Abstract:A signature independent formalism is created and utilized to determine the general second-order symmetry operators for Dirac's equation on two-dimensional Lorentzian spin manifolds. The formalism is used to characterize the orthonormal frames and metrics that permit the solution of Dirac's equation by separation of variables in the case where a second-order symmetry operator underlies the separation. Separation of variables in complex variables on two-dimensional Minkowski space is also considered.

Abstract:Symmetry plays a fundamental role in physics. The quasi-degeneracy between single-particle orbitals $(n, l, j = l + 1/2)$ and $(n-1, l + 2, j = l + 3/2)$ indicates a hidden symmetry in atomic nuclei, the so-called pseudospin symmetry (PSS). Since the introduction of the concept of PSS in atomic nuclei, there have been comprehensive efforts to understand its origin. Both splittings of spin doublets and pseudospin doublets play critical roles in the evolution of magic numbers in exotic nuclei discovered by modern spectroscopic studies with radioactive ion beam facilities. Since the PSS was recognized as a relativistic symmetry in 1990s, many special features, including the spin symmetry (SS) for anti-nucleon, and many new concepts have been introduced. In the present Review, we focus on the recent progress on the PSS and SS in various systems and potentials, including extensions of the PSS study from stable to exotic nuclei, from non-confining to confining potentials, from local to non-local potentials, from central to tensor potentials, from bound to resonant states, from nucleon to anti-nucleon spectra, from nucleon to hyperon spectra, and from spherical to deformed nuclei. Open issues in this field are also discussed in detail, including the perturbative nature, the supersymmetric representation with similarity renormalization group, and the puzzle of intruder states.

Abstract:We show a nice symmetric/antisymmetric relation between the four vector Lorentz transformation and the Dirac spinor one in the Majorana representation. From the spinor one, we exhibit the antisymmetric pending of the symmetric Minkowski metric. We then rewrite the Dirac equation in various ways exploiting group properties induced by these relations, and this without complex numbers. We show also a nice relation with a five dimensional metric. When done, we will see that the traditional complex electromagnetic coupling could be handled also without complex numbers by just considering two coupled real fields instead of one complex field. Finally, we will show that going toward six or ten dimensional spacetime would be more natural from a group point of view.

Spin Symmetry in Dirac Negative-Energy Spectrum in Density-Dependent Relativistic Hartree-Fock Theory

Abstract:The spin symmetry in the Dirac negative energy spectrum and its origin are investigated for the first time within the density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock (DDRHF) theory. Taking the nucleus $^{16}$O as an example, the spin symmetry in the negative energy spectrum is found to be a good approximation and the dominant components of the Dirac wave functions for the spin doublets are nearly identical. In comparison with the relativistic Hartree approximation where the origin of spin symmetry lies in the equality of the scalar and vector potentials, in DDRHF the cancellation between the Hartree and Fock terms is responsible for the better spin symmetry properties and determines the subtle spin-orbit splitting. These conclusions hold even in the case when significant deviations from the G-parity values of the meson-antinucleon couplings occur.

Abstract:EPR experiment on $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ system in 1998\cite{1} strongly hints that one should use operators $\hat{E}_c=-i\hbar\frac{\partial}{\partial t}$ and $\hat{\bf p}_c=i\hbar\nabla$ for the wavefunction (WF) of antiparticle. Further analysis on Klein-Gordon (KG) equation reveals that there is a discrete symmetry hiding in relativistic quantum mechanics (RQM) that ${\cal P}{\cal T}={\cal C}$. Here ${\cal P}{\cal T}$ means the (newly defined) combined space-time inversion (with ${\bf x}\to -{\bf x}, t\to-t$), while ${\cal C}$ the transformation of WF $\psi$ between particle and its antiparticle whose definition is just residing in the above symmetry. After combining with Feshbach-Villars (FV) dissociation of KG equation ($\psi=\phi+\chi$)\cite{2}, this discrete symmetry can be rigorously reformulated by the invariance of coupling equation of $\phi$ and $\chi$ under either the combined space-time inversion ${\cal P}{\cal T}$ or the mass inversion ($m\to -m$), which makes the KG equation a self-consistent theory. Dirac equation is also discussed accordingly. Various applications of this discrete symmetry are discussed, including the prediction of antigravity between matter and antimatter as well as the reason why we believe neutrinos are likely the tachyons.

An Algebraic Theory of Non-Relativistic Spin

Abstract:In this paper we present a new, elementary derivation of non-relativistic spin using exclusively real algebraic methods. To do this, we formulate a novel method to decompose the domain of a real endomorphism according to its algebraic properties. We reveal non-commutative multipole tensors as the primary physically meaningful observables of spin, and indicate that spin is fundamentally geometric in nature. In so doing, we demonstrate that neither dynamics nor complex numbers are essential to the fundamental description of spin.

Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras

Abstract:In physics, spin is often seen exclusively through the lens of its phenomenological character: as an intrinsic form of angular momentum. However, there is mounting evidence that spin fundamentally originates as a quality of geometry, not of dynamics, and recent work further suggests that the structure of non-relativistic Euclidean three-space is sufficient to define it. In this paper, we directly explicate this fundamentally non-relativistic, geometric nature of spin by constructing non-commutative algebras of position operators which subsume the structure of an arbitrary spin system. These "Spin- s Position Algebras" are defined by elementary means and from the properties of Euclidean three-space alone, and constitute a fundamentally new model for quantum mechanical systems with non-zero spin, within which neither position and spin degrees of freedom, nor position degrees of freedom within themselves, commute. This reveals that the observables of a system with spin can be described completely geometrically as tensors of oriented planar elements, and that the presence of non-zero spin in a system naturally generates a non-commutative geometry within it. We will also discuss the potential for the Spin- s Position Algebras to form the foundation for a generalisation to arbitrary spin of the Clifford and Duffin–Kemmer–Petiau algebras.

Self-Spin-Controlled Rotation of Spatial States of a Dirac Electron in a Cylindrical Potential via Spin-Orbit Interaction

Abstract:Solution of the Dirac equation predicts that when an electron with non-zero orbital angular momentum propagates in a cylindrically symmetric potential, its spin and orbital degrees of freedom interact, causing the electron's phase velocity to depend on whether its spin and orbital angular momenta vectors are oriented parallel or anti-parallel with respect to each other. This spin-orbit splitting of the electronic dispersion curves can result in a rotation of the electron's spatial state in a manner controlled by the electron's own spin z-component value. These effects persist at non-relativistic velocities. To clarify the physical origin of this effect, we compare solutions of the Dirac equation to perturbative predictions of the Schrodinger-Pauli equation with a spin-orbit term, using the standard Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian. This clearly shows that the origin of the effect is the familiar relativistic spin-orbit interaction.

Abstract:We resolve a number of questions related to an analytic description of electromagnetic form factors of non-Dirac particles with the rest spin 1/2. We find the general structure of a matrix antisymmetric tensor operator. We obtain two recurrence relations for matrix elements of finite transformations of the proper Lorentz group and explicit formulas for a certain set of such elements. Within the theory of fields with double symmetry, we discuss writing the components of wave vectors of particles in the form of infinite continued fractions. We show that for $Q^{2} \leq 0.5$ (GeV/c)$^{2}$, where $Q^{2}$ is the transferred momentum squared, electromagnetic form factors that decrease as $Q^{2}$ increases and are close to those experimentally observed in the proton can be obtained without explicitly introducing an internal particle structure.

Abstract:The origin of pseudospin symmetry (PSS) and its breaking mechanism are explored by combining supersymmetry (SUSY) quantum mechanics, perturbation theory, and the similarity renormalization group (SRG) method. The Schrodinger equation is taken as an example, corresponding to the lowest-order approximation in transforming a Dirac equation into a diagonal form by using the SRG. It is shown that while the spin-symmetry-conserving term appears in the single-particle Hamiltonian H, the PSS-conserving term appears naturally in its SUSY partner Hamiltonian (H) over tilde. The eigenstates of Hamiltonians H and (H) over tilde are exactly one-to-one identical except for the so-called intruder states. In such a way, the origin of PSS deeply hidden in H can be traced in its SUSY partner Hamiltonian (H) over tilde. The perturbative nature of PSS in the present potential without a spin-orbit term is demonstrated by the perturbation calculations, and the PSS-breaking term can be regarded as a very small perturbation on the exact PSS limits. A general tendency that the pseudospin-orbit splittings become smaller with increasing single-particle energies can also be interpreted in an explicit way. DOI:10.1103/PhysRevC.87.014334
Schrödinger symmetry: a historical review

Abstract:This paper reviews the history of the conformal extension of Galilean symmetry, now called Schrödinger symmetry. In the physics literature, its discovery is commonly attributed to Jackiw, Niederer and Hagen (1972). However, Schrödinger symmetry has a much older ancestry: the associated conserved quantities were known to Jacobi in 1842/43 and its euclidean counterpart was discovered by Sophus Lie in 1881 in his studies of the heat equation. A convenient way to study Schrödinger symmetry is provided by a non-relativistic Kaluza-Klein-type "Bargmann" framework, first proposed by Eisenhart (1929), but then forgotten and re-discovered by Duval {\it et al.} only in 1984. Representations of Schrödinger symmetry differ by the value $z=2$ of the dynamical exponent from the value $z=1$ found in representations of relativistic conformal invariance. For generic values of $z$, whole families of new algebras exist, which for $z=2/\ell$ include the $\ell$-conformal galilean algebras. We also review the non-relativistic limit of conformal algebras and that this limit leads to the $1$-conformal galilean algebra and not to the Schrödinger algebra. The latter can be recovered in the Bargmann framework through reduction. A distinctive feature of Galilean and Schrödinger symmetries are the Bargmann super-selection rules, algebraically related to a central extension. An empirical consequence of this was known as "mass conservation" already to Lavoisier. As an illustration of these concepts, some applications to physical ageing in simple model systems are reviewed.

Abstract:The question is considered as to whether complete rotational symmetry in isotopic spin space is necessary. In particular, the classification of elementary particles on the basis of the representations of a finite group is attempted. It is found that for the particles whose reactions are known, the law of conservation of charge results in a scheme essentially equivalent with ones previously proposed. However, some additional freedom is found which would accommodate particles with rather unusual properties if such are ever observed.
