Abstract:We prove the exact controllability of linear KP-I equation if the control input is added on a vertical domain. More generally, we have obtained the least dispersion needed to insure observability for fractional linear KP I equation.

Abstract:It is showed that under reasonable conditions, exact controllability of a linear system in a Hilbert space with bounded control implies time reversibility and spectral completeness of the system. The theory is applied to the beam and plate equations with boundary damping to establish their backward-time wellposedness and completeness of associated generalized eigenfunctions.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of exact controllability of linear control systems with compact semigroup in non-reflexive state spaces and control spaces. The weak convergence of bounded sequence of control functions with respect to the subspace of the dual space is studied and a lemma for the weak convergence is proved. Based on the lemma and the strong separation theorem, a necessary and sufficient condition for exact controllability of compact semigroups with respect to the space consisting all essentially bounded measurable functions is obtained. An example of heat equation is presented to illustrate the utility of the result. Some related problems remaining for further study are addressed.

Abstract:When the rotatory inertia is taken into account, vibrations of a linear plate can be described by the Kirchhoff plate equation. Consider this equation with locally distributed control forces and some boundary condition which is the simply supported boundary condition for a rectangular plate. In this paper, the authors establish exact controllability of the system in terms of the equivalence to exact internal controllability of the wave equation, by means of a frequency domain characterization of exact controllability introduced recently in [11].

Abstract:This paper represents a new perspective in understanding the controllability of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation on unbounded domains. By studying the equation on both the right and left half-line with a single control input, we show that a class of solutions exists for which the KdV equation is exactly controllable. This is achieved by introducing a new concept known as \textit{operational controllability}, which provides key insights for establishing exact controllability results for the KdV equation. This approach allows explicitly characterizing both the control input and the controllable solutions. Furthermore, this concept holds significant potential for application to a wide range of nonlinear dispersive equations on the half-line and in bounded intervals.

Abstract:Consider the wave equation with distributed controls supported on a subdomain, called control subdomain, which is allowed to be variant in time. For any prescribed time duration, the authors work out a scheme for changing the control subdomain such that the wave equation is exactly controllable on this time duration, where the control subdomain at any time is allowed to have arbitrarily small measure and relatively simple shape.

Abstract:Based on the theory of the local exact boundary controllability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems, using an extension method, the authors establish the exact controllability in a shorter time by means of internal controls acting on suitable domains. In particular, under certain special but reasonable hypotheses, the exact controllability can be realized only by internal controls, and the control time can be arbitrarily small.

Abstract:We consider first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with vertical characteristics. It was shown in [4] that such systems can be exactly controllable with the help of internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. However, it is possible that, for physical or engineering reasons, we can not put any control on the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. In this paper, we will establish the exact controllability only by means of physically meaningful internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to non-zero eigenvalues. We also show the exact controllability for a very simplified model by means of switching controls.

In this paper, we obtain the exact controllability for a refined stochastic wave equation with three controls by establishing a novel Carleman estimate for a backward hyperbolic-like operator. Compared with the known result [Q. Lü and X Zhang, Mathematical Control Theory for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Springer, Cham, Switzerland, 2021], the novelty of this paper is twofold: (1) Our model contains the effects in the drift terms when we put controls directly in the diffusion terms, which is more sensible for practical applications; (2) We provide an explicit description of the waiting time which is sharp in the case of dimension one and is independent of the coefficents of lower terms.

Abstract:This paper is addressed to studying the exact controllability for stochastic Schrödinger equations by two controls. One is a boundary control in the drift term and the other is an internal control in the diffusion term. By means of the standard duality argument, the control problem is converted into an observability problem for backward stochastic Schrödinger equations, and the desired observability estimate is obtained by a global Carleman estimate. At last, we give a result about the lack of exact controllability, which shows that the action of two controls is necessary.

Abstract:In this paper we note the equivalence between exact controllability and exponential stabilizability for an abstract conservative system with bounded control. This enables us to establish a frequency domain characterization for the exact controllability/uniform exponential decay property of second-order elastic systems, such as the wave equation and the Petrovsky equation, with (locally) distributed control/damping. A piecewise multiplier method for frequency domain is introduced. For several classes of PDEs on regions which are not necessarily smooth, we obtain a sufficient condition for the subregion on which the application of control/damping will yield the exact controllability/uniform exponential decay property. This result provides useful information for designing the location of controllers/dampers for distributed systems with a law of conservation.

Abstract:The authors prove the global exact boundary controllability for the cubic semi-linear wave equation in three space dimensions, subject to Dirichlet, Neumann, or any other kind of boundary controls which result in the well-posedness of the corresponding initial-boundary value problem. The exponential decay of energy is first established for the cubic semi-linear wave equation with some boundary condition by the multiplier method, which reduces the global exact boundary controllability problem to a local one. The proof is carried out in line with [2, 15]. Then a constructive method that has been developed in [13] is used to study the local problem. Especially when the region is star-complemented, it is obtained that the control function only need to be applied on a relatively open subset of the boundary. For the cubic Klein-Gordon equation, similar results of the global exact boundary controllability are proved by such an idea.

Abstract:In this study we focused on the linear Kawahara equation in a bounded domain, employing two boundary controls. The controllability of this system has been previously demonstrated over the past decade using the Hilbert uniqueness method which involves proving an observability inequality, in general, demonstrated via Carleman estimates. Here, we extend this understanding by achieving the exact controllability within a space of analytic functions, employing the flatness approach which is a new approach for higher-order dispersive systems.

Abstract:We study the linear Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation with periodic boundary conditions. Employing some tools from the nonharmonic Fourier series we obtain several internal observability theorems. Then we prove various exact controllability and rapid uniform stabilization results by applying a duality principle and a general feedback construction. The method presented here introduces a new insight into the control of dispersive equations on two-dimensional cases and may be adapted to more general equations.

Abstract:In this Note, we review the main existing results, methods, and some key open problems on the controllability of nonlinear hyperbolic and parabolic equations. Especially, we describe our recent universal approach to solve the local controllability problem of quasilinear time-reversible evolution equations, which is based on a new unbounded perturbation technique. It is also worthy to mention that the technique we develop can also be applied to other problems for quasilinear equations, say local existence, stabilization, etc.
