Abstract:We use adiabatic limits to study foliated manifolds. The Bott connection naturally shows up as the adiabatic limit of Levi-Civita connections. As an application, we then construct certain natural elliptic operators associated to the foliation and present a direct geometric proof of a vanshing theorem of Connes[Co], which extends the Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem [L] to foliated manifolds with spin leaves, for what we call almost Riemannian foliations. Several new vanishing theorems are also proved by using our method.

Abstract:Let (M,g^TM) be a noncompact (not necessarily complete) enlargeable Riemannian manifold in the sense of Gromov-Lawson and F an integrable subbundle of T M . Let k^F be the leafwise scalar curvature associated to g^F=g^TM|_F. We show that if either TM or F is spin, then inf(k^F)≤ 0. This generalizes the famous result of Gromov-Lawson on enlargeable manifolds to the case of foliations. It also extends an ansatz of Gromov on hyper-Euclidean spaces to general enlargeable Riemannian manifolds, as well as recent results on compact enlargeable foliated manifolds due to Benameur-Heitsch et al to the noncompact situation.

Abstract:We generalize classical theorems due to Lichnerowicz and Hitchin on the existence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on spin manifolds to the case of foliated spin manifolds. As a consequence, we show that there is no foliation of positive leafwise scalar curvature on any torus, which generalizes the famous theorem of Schoen-Yau and Gromov-Lawson on the non-existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature on torus to the case of foliations. Moreover, our method, which is partly inspired by the analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau, also applies to give a new proof of the celebrated Connes vanishing theorem without using noncommutative geometry.
A Lichnerowicz-Hitchin Vanishing Theorem for Foliations

Abstract:We construct Dirac operators on foliations by applying the Bismut-Lebeau analytic localization technique to the Connes fibration over a foliation. The Laplacian of the resulting Dirac operators has better lower bound than that obtained by using the usual adiabatic limit arguments on the original foliation. As a consequence, we prove an extension of the Lichnerowicz-Hitchin vanishing theorem to the case of foliations.

Abstract:We give applications of the higher Lefschetz theorems for foliations of [BH10], primarily involving Haefliger cohomology. These results show that the transverse structures of foliations carry important topological and geometric information. This is in the spirit of the passage from the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for a single compact manifold to their families index theorem, involving a compact fiber bundle over a compact base. For foliations, Haefliger cohomology plays the role that the cohomology of the base space plays in the families index theorem. We obtain highly useful numerical invariants by paring with closed holonomy invariant currents. In particular, we prove that the non-triviality of the higher A-hat genus of the foliation in Haefliger cohomology can be an obstruction to the existence of non-trivial leaf-preserving compact connected group actions. We then construct a large collection of examples for which no such actions exist. Finally, we relate our results to Connes' spectral triples, and prove useful integrality results.

Abstract:We present an extension of several results on pairs and varieties to foliated surface pairs. We prove the boundedness of local complements, the local index theorem, and the uniform boundedness of minimal log discrepancies (mlds), as well as establishing the existence of uniform rational lc polytopes. Furthermore, we address two questions posed by P. Cascini and C. Spicer on foliations, providing negative responses. We also demonstrate that the Grauert-Riemenschneider type vanishing theorem generally fails for lc foliations on surfaces. In addition, we determine the set of minimal log discrepancies for foliated surface pairs with specific coefficients, which leads to the recovery of Y.-A. Chen's proof on the ascending chain condition conjecture for mlds for foliated surfaces.

Abstract:We extend our family rigidity and vanishing theorems in [LiuMaZ] to the Spin c case.In particular, we prove a ^-theory version of the main results of [H], [Liul, Theorem B] for a family of almost complex manifolds.0. Introduction.Let M, B be two compact smooth manifolds, and TT : M -» B be a smooth fibration with compact fibre X.Let TX be the relative tangent bundle.Assume that a compact Lie group G acts fiberwise on M, that is, the action preserves each fiber of TT.Let P be a family of G-equivariant elliptic operators along the fiber X.Then the family index of P, Ind(P), is a well-defined element in K(B) (cf.[AS]) and is a virtual G-representation (cf.[LiuMal]).We denote by (Ind(P)) G £ K(B) the G-invariant part of Ind(P).A family of elliptic operator P is said to be rigid on the equivariant Chern character level with respect to this G-action, if the equivariant Chern character ch 5 (Ind(P)) G H*(B) is independent of g G G. Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a holomorphic foliation at $p\in\mathbb{C}^2$, and $B$ be a separatrix of $\mathcal{F}$. We prove the following Dimca-Greuel type inequality $3\mu_p(\mathcal{F},B)-4\tau_p(\mathcal{F},B)+GSV_p(\mathcal{F},B)\leq 0$, where $\mu_p(\mathcal{F},B)$ is the multiplicity of $\mathcal{F}$ along $B$, $\tau_p(\mathcal{F},B)$ is the dimension of the quotient of $\mathbb{C}\{x,y\}$ by the ideal generated by the components of any $1$-form defining $\mathcal{F}$ and any equation of $B$, and $GSV_p(\mathcal{F},B)$ is the \textit{Gómez-Mont-Seade-Verjovsky index} of the foliation $\mathcal{F}$ with respect to $B$. As a consequence, we provide a new proof of the $\frac{4}{3}$-Dimca-Greuel conjecture for singularities of irreducible plane curve germs, with foliations ingredients, that differs from those given by Alberich-Carramiñana, Almirón, Blanco, Melle-Hernández and Genzmer-Hernandes, but it is in line with the idea developed by Wang.

Abstract:Let $(M,g^{TM})$ be a noncompact complete Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$, and let $F\subseteq TM$ be an integrable subbundle of $TM$. Let $g^F=g^{TM}|_{F}$ be the restricted metric on $F$ and let $k^F$ be the associated leafwise scalar curvature. Let $f:M\to S^n(1)$ be a smooth area decreasing map along $F$, which is locally constant near infinity and of non-zero degree. We show that if $k^F> {\rm rk}(F)({\rm rk}(F)-1)$ on the support of ${\rm d}f$, and either $TM$ or $F$ is spin, then $\inf (k^F)<0$. As a consequence, we prove Gromov's sharp foliated $\otimes_\varepsilon$-twisting conjecture. Using the same method, we also extend two famous non-existence results due to Gromov and Lawson about $\Lambda^2$-enlargeable metrics (and/or manifolds) to the foliated case.
Higher relative index theorems for foliations

Abstract:In this paper we solve the general case of the cohomological relative index problem for foliations of non-compact manifolds. In particular, we significantly generalize the groundbreaking results of Gromov and Lawson, [GL83], to Dirac operators defined along the leaves of foliations of non-compact complete Riemannian manifolds, by involving all the terms of the Connes-Chern character, especially the higher order terms in Haefliger cohomology. The zero-th order term corresponding to holonomy invariant measures was carried out in [BH21] and becomes a special case of our main results here. In particular, for two leafwise Dirac operators on two foliated manifolds which agree near infinity, we define a relative topological index and the Connes-Chern character of a relative analytic index, both being in relative Haefliger cohomology. We show that these are equal. This invariant can be paired with closed holonomy invariant currents (which agree near infinity) to produce higher relative scalar invariants. When we relate these invariants to the leafwise index bundles, we restrict to Riemannian foliations on manifolds of sub-exponential growth. This allows us {to prove a higher relative index bundle theorem}, extending the classical index bundle theorem of [BH08]. Finally, we construct examples of foliations and use these invariants to prove that their spaces of leafwise positive scalar curvature metrics have infinitely many path-connected components, completely new results which are not available from [BH21]. In particular, these results confirm the well-known idea that important geometric information of foliations is embodied in the higher terms of the A-hat genus.

Abstract:Llarull's theorem characterizes the round sphere $S^n$ among all spin manifolds whose scalar curvature is bounded from below by $n(n-1)$. In this paper we show that if the scalar curvature is bounded from below by $n(n-1)-\varepsilon$, the underlying manifold is $C^0$-close to a finite number of spheres outside a small bad set. This completely solves Gromov's spherical stability problem.

The Poincaré Problem for a foliated surface

Abstract:Let $\mathcal F$ be a foliation on a smooth projective surface $S$ over the complex number $\mathbb{C}$. We introduce three birational non-negative invariants $c_1^2(\mathcal F)$, $c_2(\mathcal F)$ and $\chi(\mathcal F)$, called the Chern numbers. If the foliation $\mathcal F$ is not of general type, the first Chern number $c_1^2(\mathcal F)=0$, and $c_2(\mathcal F)=\chi(\mathcal F)=0$ except when $\mathcal F$ is induced by a non-isotrivial fibration of genus $g=1$. If $\mathcal F$ is of general type, we obtain a slope inequality when $\mathcal F$ is algebraically integral. As a corollary, $\mathcal F$ is always transcendental if the slope is less than $2$. On the other hand, we also prove three sharp Noether type inequalities if $\mathcal F$ is of general type. As applications, we obtain a criterion for foliations to be transcendental using Noether type inequalities, and we also give a partial positive answer to the question on the lower bound on the volume of a foliation of general type.

Abstract:We use a recent result of C. Lange to obtain a converse to a theorem of B. Bowditch in dimension at most $4$. In particular, we show that, for $n \leq 4$, a polyhedral $n$-manifold $X$ with bounded geometry is $K$-bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a Riemannian manifold $M$. We bound the constant $K$, the curvature, and the injectivity radius of $M$ by the bounds on the geometry of $X$.

Abstract:Let $f:N\rightarrow (M,g)$ be an oriented (or spin), complete, stable, minimal, immersed hypersurface. In this paper we establish various vanishing theorems for the space of $L^2$-harmonic forms and spinors (in the spin case) under suitable positive curvature assumptions on the ambient manifold. Our results in the setting of forms extend to higher dimensions and more general ambient Riemannian manifolds previous vanishing theorems due to Tanno \cite{Tanno} and Zhu \cite{Zhu}. In the setting of spin manifolds our results allow to conclude, for instance, that any oriented, complete, stable, minimal, immersed hypersurface of $\mathbb{R}^m$ or $\mathbb{S}^m$ carries no non-trivial $L^2$-harmonic spinors. Finally, analogous results are proved for strongly stable constant mean curvature hypersurfaces.

The canonical map of a foliated surface of general type

Abstract:Let $(S,\mathcal{F})$ be a foliated surface over the complex number of general type, i.e., the Kodaira dimension $\mathrm{Kod}(\mathcal{F})=2$. We study the geometry of the canonical map $\varphi$ of the foliated surface $(S,\mathcal{F})$, and prove several boundedness results on the canonical map $\varphi$, generalizing Beauville's beautiful work on the canonical maps of algebraic surfaces to foliated surfaces. As an application, we prove three Noether type inequalities for $(S,\mathcal{F})$ depending on the Kodaira dimension of the surface $S$.
