Abstract:Motivated by recent interest concerning "puncture repair" in the conformal geometry of compact Riemannian manifolds, a brief exposition on generalisation to the setting of quasiconformal mappings on certain metric measure spaces is presented as well as a brief outline on removability of porous sets.

Abstract:In a recent paper \cite{T} the fact that a class of locally compact metric spaces $X$, among which are Euclidean spaces, are not homemorphic to their punctured version $X\men\{p\}$, was given an interesting new proof which does not use algebraic topology; essential tools of this proof are a boundedly compact metric structure, and path--connectedness near infinity. Here we show that local compactness and ordinary connectedness near infinity suffice; no metrizability is needed, and moreover we can also delete whole compact subsets, not only single points. Some non--homeomorphism results on many--holed Euclidean balls are also obtained. This note ought to distil the essence of the method developed in \cite{T}.

Moduli space theory for complete, constant Q-curvature metrics on finitely punctured spheres

Abstract:We study constant Q-curvature metrics conformal to the round metric on the sphere with finitely many point singularities. We show that the moduli space of solutions with finitely many punctures in fixed positions, equipped with the Gromov-Hausdorff topology, has the local structure of a real analytic variety with formal dimension equal to the number of the punctures. If a nondegeneracy hypothesis holds, we show that a neighborhood in the moduli space is actually a real-analytic manifold of the expected dimension. We also construct a geometrically natural set of parameters, construct a symplectic structure on this parameter space and show that in the smooth case a small neighborhood of the moduli space embeds as a Lagrangian submanifold in the parameter space.

Abstract:Given a sample Y from an unknown manifold X embedded in Euclidean space, it is possible to recover the homology groups of X by building a Vietoris–Rips or Čech simplicial complex on top of the vertex set Y. However, these simplicial complexes need not inherit the metric structure of the manifold, in particular when Y is infinite. Indeed, a simplicial complex is not even metrizable if it is not locally finite. We instead consider metric thickenings, called the Vietoris–Rips and Čech thickenings, which are equipped with the 1-Wasserstein metric in place of the simplicial complex topology. We show that for Euclidean subsets X with positive reach, the thickenings satisfy metric analogues of Hausmann's theorem and the nerve lemma (the metric Vietoris–Rips and Čech thickenings of X are homotopy equivalent to X for scale parameters less than the reach). To our knowledge this is the first version of Hausmann's theorem for Vietoris–Rips constructions on entire Euclidean submanifolds (as opposed to Riemannian manifolds), and our result also extends to non-manifold shapes (as not all sets of positive reach are manifolds). In contrast to Hausmann's original proof, our homotopy equivalence is a deformation retraction, is realized by canonical maps in both directions, and furthermore can be proven to be a homotopy equivalence via simple linear homotopies from the map compositions to the corresponding identity maps.

Abstract:We investigate the behavior of a complete flat metric on a surface near a puncture. We call a puncture on a flat surface regular if it has a neighborhood which is isometric to that of a point at infinity of a cone. We prove that there are punctures which are not regular if and only if the curvature at the puncture is $4\pi$. We classify irregular punctures of a flat surface up to modification equivalence, where two punctures are called modification-equivalent if they have isometric neighborhoods. We show that there are uncountably many modification-equivalence classes of punctures on flat surfaces.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to give an affirmative answer to the long-standing conjecture which asserts that the affine map is a uniquely extremal quasiconformal map in the Teichmuller space of the complex plane punctured at the integer lattice points. In addition we derive a corollary related to the geometry of the corresponding Teichmuller space. Besides that we consider the classical dual extremal problem which naturally arises in the tangent space of the Teichmuller space. In particular we prove the uniqueness of Hahn-Banach extension of the associated linear functional given on the Bergman space of the integer lattice domain. Several useful estimates related to the local and global properties of integrable meromorphic functions and the delta functional (see the definition below) are also obtained. These estimates are intended to study the behavior of integrable functions near singularities and they are valid in general settings.

Abstract:The origin of quasiconformal mappings, like that of conformal mappings, can be traced back to old cartography where the basic problem was the search for mappings from the sphere onto the plane with minimal deviation from conformality, subject to certain conditions which were made precise. In this paper, we survey the development of cartography, highlighting the main ideas that are related to quasiconformality. Some of these ideas were completely ignored in the previous historical surveys on quasiconformal mappings. We then survey early quasiconformal theory in the works of Grötzsch, Lavrentieff, Ahlfors and Teichmüller, which are the 20th-century founders of the theory. The period we consider starts with Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100--170 A.D.) and ends with Oswald Teichmüller (1913--1943). We mention the works of several mathematicians-geographers done in this period, including Euler, Lagrange, Lambert, Gauss, Chebyshev, Darboux and others. We highlight in particular the work of Nicolas-Auguste Tissot (1824--1897), a French mathematician and geographer who (according to our knowledge) was the first to introduce the notion of a mapping which transforms infinitesimal circles into infinitesimal ellipses, studying parameters such as the ratio of the major to the minor axes of such an infinitesimal ellipse, its area divided by the area of the infinitesimal circle of which it is the image, and the inclination of its axis with respect to a fixed axis in the plane. We also give some information about the lives and works of Grötzsch, Lavrentieff, Ahlfors and Teichmüller. The latter brought the theory of quasiconformal mappings to a high level of development. He used it in an essential way in his investigations of Riemann surfaces and their moduli and in function theory (in particular, in his work on the Bieberbach conjecture and the type problem). We survey in detail several of his results. We also discuss some aspects of his life and writings, explaining why his papers were not read and why some of his ideas are still unknown even to Teichmüller theorists. The final version of this paper will appear in the book "Uniformization, Riemann-Hilbert Correspondence, Calabi-Yau Manifolds, and Picard-Fuchs Equations" (ed. L. Ji and S.-T. Definitions of quasiconformality on metric surfaces

Abstract:We explore the interplay between different definitions of distortion for mappings $f\colon X\to \mathbb{R}^2$, where $X$ is any metric surface, meaning that $X$ is homeomorphic to a domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and has locally finite 2-dimensional Hausdorff measure. We establish that finite distortion in terms of the familiar analytic definition always implies finite distortion in terms of maximal and minimal stretchings along paths. The converse holds for maps with locally integrable distortion. In particular, we prove the equivalence of various notions of quasiconformality, implying a novel uniformization result for metric surfaces.

Abstract:We characterize conformally removable sets in the plane with the aid of the recent developments in the theory of metric surfaces. We prove that a compact set in the plane is $S$-removable if and only if there exists a quasiconformal map from the plane onto a metric surface that maps the given set to a set of linear measure zero. The statement fails if we consider maps into the plane rather than metric surfaces. Moreover, we prove that a set is $S$-removable (resp. $CH$-removable) if and only if every homeomorphism from the plane onto a metric surface (resp. reciprocal metric surface) that is quasiconformal in the complement of the given set is quasiconformal everywhere.

On the metric Kollár-Pardon problem

Abstract:Let $(M, g)$ be a compact real analytic Riemannian manifold and $\pi \colon \widetilde{M} \to M$ its universal cover. Assume that $\widetilde{M}$ can be realised as a manifold definable in an o-minimal structure $\Sigma$ expanding $\mathbb{R}_{\mathrm{an}}$ in such a way that the pullback metric $\widetilde{g}:=\pi^*g$ is $\Sigma$-definable. For instance, this is the case when $\widetilde{M}$ can be realised as a semi-algebraic submanifold in $\mathbb{R}^n$ in such a way that the coefficients of the metric $\widetilde{g}$ are semi-algebraic. We show that there exists a definable smooth map $\widetilde{M} \to \widetilde{K}$ to a compact simply connected $\Sigma$-definable space $\widetilde{K}$ such that its regular fibres are Riemann locally homogeneous with respect to the metric $\widetilde{g}$. We deduce that under these assumptions $\pi_1(M)$ is quasi-isometric to a locally homogeneous space. In the case when $M$ is aspherical we show that $(\widetilde{M}, \widetilde{g})$ is a homogeneous Riemannian manifold. A similar result in the setting of complex algebraic geometry was earlier conjectured by Kollár and Pardon (\cite{KP}). Using our results, we prove the conjecture of Kollár-Pardon in the special case of smooth aspherical varieties admitting a bi-definable Kähler metric and discuss the analogues of this conjecture in other branches of geometry.

Metric definition of quasiconformality and exceptional sets

Abstract:We show that a homeomorphism of Euclidean space is quasiconformal if and only if at each point there exists a sequence of uncentered open sets with bounded eccentricity shrinking to that point whose images also have bounded eccentricity. This generalizes the metric definition of quasiconformality of Gehring that uses balls instead. We also study exceptional sets for this definition, in connection with sets that are negligible for extremal distances. We introduce the class of CNED sets, generalizing the classical notion of NED sets studied by Ahlfors--Beurling. A set $A$ is CNED if the conformal modulus of a curve family is not affected when one restricts to the subfamily intersecting the set $A$ at countably many points. We show as our main theorem that CNED sets are exceptional for the definition of quasiconformality.

Abstract:In this paper we study quasiconformal curves which are a special case of quasiregular curves. Namely embeddings $\Omega\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^m$ from some domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}^m$, where $n\leq m$, which belong in a suitable Sobolev class and satisfy a certain distortion inequality for some smooth, closed and non-vanishing $n$-form in $\mathbb{R}^m$. These mappings can be seen as quasiconformal mappings between $\Omega$ and $f(\Omega)$. We prove that a quasiconformal curve always satisfies the analytic definition of quasiconformal mappings and the lower half of the modulus inequality. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for a quasiconformal curve to satisfy the metric definition of quasiconformal mappings. We also show that a quasiconformal map from $\Omega$ to $f(\Omega)\subset \mathbb{R}^m$ is a quasiconformal $\omega$ curve for some form $\omega$ under suitable assumptions. Finally, we show the same is true when we equip the target space $f(\Omega)$ with its intrinsic metric instead of the Euclidean one.

Abstract:A generalized metric on a manifold $M$, i.e., a pair $(g,H)$, where $g$ is a Riemannian metric and $H$ a closed $3$-form, is a fixed point of the generalized Ricci flow if and only if $(g,H)$ is Bismut Ricci flat: $H$ is $g$-harmonic and $ric(g)=\tfrac{1}{4} H_g^2$. On any homogeneous space $M=G/K$, where $G=G_1\times G_2$ is a compact semisimple Lie group with two simple factors, under some mild assumptions, we exhibit a Bismut Ricci flat $G$-invariant generalized metric, which is proved to be unique among a $4$-parameter space of metrics in many cases, including when $K$ is neither abelian nor semisimple. On the other hand, if $K$ is simple and the standard metric is Einstein on both $G_1/\pi_1(K)$ and $G_2/\pi_2(K)$, we give a one-parameter family of Bismut Ricci flat $G$-invariant generalized metrics on $G/K$ and show that it is most likely pairwise non-homothetic by computing the ratio of Ricci eigenvalues. This is proved to be the case for every space of the form $M=G\times G/\Delta K$ and for $M^{35}=SO(8)\times SO(7)/G_2$. A Corrigendum has been added in Appendix A.

Abstract:We introduce and study a novel uniformization metric model for the quasi-Fuchsian space QF(S) of a closed oriented surface S, defined through a class of C-valued bilinear forms on S, called Bers metrics, which coincide with hyperbolic Riemannian metrics along the Fuchsian locus. By employing this approach, we present a new model of the holomorphic tangent bundle of QF(S) that extends the metric model for Teichmüller space defined by Berger and Ebin, and give an integral representation of the Goldman symplectic form and of the holomorphic extension of the Weil-Petersson metric to QF(S), with a new proof of its existence and non-degeneracy. We also determine new bounds for the Schwarzian of Bers projective structures extending Kraus estimate. Lastly, we use this formalism to give alternative proofs to several classic results in quasi-Fuchsian theory.

Abstract:AbstractWe have systematically made the numerical exploration about the perturbation extension of area-preserving mappings to three-dimensional ones, in which the fixed points of area preserving are elliptic, parabolic or hyperbolic respectively. It has been observed that: (i) the invariant manifolds in the vicinity of the fixed point generally don’t exist (ii) when the invariant curve of original two-dimensional mapping exists the invariant tubes do also in the neighbourhood of the invariant curve (iii) for the perturbation extension of area-preserving mapping the invariant manifolds can only be generated in the subset of the invariant manifolds of original two-dimensional mapping, (iv) for the perturbation extension of area preserving mappings with hyperbolic or parabolic fixed point the ordered region near and far from the invariant curve will be destroyed by perturbation more easily than the other one, This is a result different from the case with the elliptic fixed point. In the latter the ordered region near invariant curve is solid. Some of the results have been demonstrated exactly.Finally we have discussed the Kolmogorov Entropy of the mappings and studied some applications.
Metric Measure Spaces and Synthetic Ricci Bounds -- Fundamental Concepts and Recent Developments

Abstract:Metric measure spaces with synthetic Ricci bounds have attracted great interest in recent years, accompanied by spectacular breakthroughs and deep new insights. In this survey, I will provide a brief introduction to the concept of lower Ricci bounds as introduced by Lott-Villani and myself, and illustrate some of its geometric, analytic and probabilistic consequences, among them Li-Yau estimates, coupling properties for Brownian motions, sharp functional and isoperimetric inequalities, rigidity results, and structural properties like rectifiability and rectifiability of the boundary. In particular, I will explain its crucial interplay with the heat flow and its link to the curvaturedimension condition formulated in functional-analytic terms by Bakry-Èmery. This equivalence between the Lagrangian and the Eulerian approach then will be further explored in various recent research directions: i) time-dependent Ricci bounds which provide a link to (super-) Ricci flows for singular spaces, ii) second order calculus, upper Ricci bounds, and transformation formulas, iii) distribution-valued Ricci bounds which e.g. allow singular effects of non-convex boundaries to be taken into account.

Abstract:We show that the noncommutative differential geometry of quantum projective spaces is compatible with Rieffel's theory of compact quantum metric spaces. This amounts to a detailed investigation of the Connes metric coming from the unital spectral triple introduced by D'Andrea and Dabrowski. In particular, we establish that the Connes metric metrizes the weak-* topology on the state space of quantum projective space. This generalizes previous work by the second author and Aguilar regarding spectral metrics on the standard Podles spheres.
