Abstract:We compute the cohomology of the unordered configuration spaces of the sphere $S^2$ with integral and with $\mathbb{Z}/p \mathbb{Z}$-coefficients using a cell complex by Fuks, Vainshtein and Napolitano.

Abstract:We compute the integral cohomology ring of configuration spaces of two points on a given real projective space. Apart from an integral class, the resulting ring is a quotient of the known integral cohomology of the dihedral group of order 8 (in the case of unordered configurations, thus has only 2- and 4-torsion) or of the elementary abelian 2-group of rank 2 (in the case of ordered configurations, thus has only 2-torsion). As an application, we complete the computation of the symmetric topological complexity of real projective spaces of dimensions of the form 2^i+j for non-negative i and j with j<3.

Abstract:We extend the notion of regularized integrals introduced by Li-Zhou that aims to assign finite values to divergent integrals on configuration spaces of Riemann surfaces. We then give cohomological formulations for the extended notion using the tools of current cohomology and mixed Hodge structures. We also provide practical ways of constructing representatives of the corresponding cohomology classes in terms of smooth differential forms.

Abstract:In this paper, we compute explicitly both the $K$-theory and integral cohomology rings of the space of commuting elements in $SU(2)$ via the $K$-theory of its desingularization. We also briefly discuss the different behavior of its cohomology with complex and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ coefficients in the context of representation stability and FI-modules.

Abstract:The CW structure of certain spaces, such as effective orbifolds, can be too complicated for computational purposes. In this paper we use the concept of $\mathbf{q}$-CW complex structure on an orbifold, to detect torsion in its integral cohomology. The main result can be applied to well known classes of orbifolds or algebraic varieties having orbifold singularities, such as toric orbifolds, simplicial toric varieties, torus orbifolds and weighted Grassmannians.

Abstract:For any natural numbers $k \leq n$, the rational cohomology ring of the space of continuous maps $S^{2k-1} \to S^{2n-1}$ (respectively, $S^{4k-1} \to S^{4n-1}$) equivariant under the Hopf action of the circle (respectively, of the group $S^3$ of unit quaternions) is naturally isomorphic to that of the Stiefel manifold $V_k({\mathbb C}^n)$ (respectively, $V_k({\mathbb H}^n)$). The natural maps of integral cohomology groups of these spaces of equivariant maps to cohomology of Stiefel manifolds are surjective but not injective.

Abstract:Quasi-elliptic cohomology is conjectured by Sati and Schreiber as a particularly suitable approximation to equivariant 4-th Cohomotopy, which classifies the charges carried by M-branes in M-theory in a way that is analogous to the traditional idea that complex K-theory classifies the charges of D-branes in string theory. In this paper we compute quasi-elliptic cohomology of 4-spheres under the action by some finite subgroups that are the most interesting isotropy groups where the M5-branes may sit.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the vanishing of the bounded cohomology of $\text{Diff}^r_+(S^n)$ with real coefficients when $n\geq 4$ and $1\leq r\leq \infty$. This answers the question raised in \cite{FNS24} for $\geq 4$ dimensional spheres.

Abstract:In this note, we give a motivic characterization of the integral cohomology of dual boundary complexes of smooth quasi-projective complex algebraic varieties. As a corollary, the dual boundary complex of any stably affine space (of positive dimension) is contractible. In a separate paper [Su23], this corollary has been used by the author in his proof of the weak geometric P=W conjecture for very generic $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$-character varieties over any punctured Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:For a compact orientable surface $\Sigma_{g,1}$ of genus $g$ with one boundary component and for an odd prime number $p$, we study the homology of the unordered configuration spaces $C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1}):=\coprod_{n\ge0}C_n(\Sigma_{g,1})$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_p$. We describe $H_*(C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1});\mathbb{F}_p)$ as a bigraded module over the Pontryagin ring $H_*(C_\bullet(D);\mathbb{F}_p)$, where $D$ is a disc, and compute in particular the bigraded dimension over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We also consider the action of the mapping class group $\Gamma_{g,1}$, and prove that the mod-$p$ Johnson kernel $\mathcal{K}_{g,1}(p)\subseteq\Gamma_{g,1}$ is the kernel of the action on $H_*(C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1};\mathbb{F}_p))$.

Abstract:Associated to every finite simplicial complex $K$, there is a moment-angle complex $mathcal {Z}_{K}$; $mathcal {Z}_{K}$ is a compact manifold if and only if the geometric realization $|K|$ is a generalized homology sphere. The main goal of this article is to study the cohomology rings of moment-angle complexes associated to some special kinds of simplicial complexes. First, we give some cohomological transformation formulae of $mathcal {Z}_{K}$, which is induced by some combinatorial operations on the simplicial complex $K$, such as the connected sum operation and stellar subdivisions on Gorenstein* complexes. Second, we prove the indecomposability of $mathcal {Z}_{K}$ (i.e., $mathcal {Z}_{K}$ is a prime manifold) when $K$ is a flag $2$-sphere by proving the indecomposability of their cohomology rings. Then we use these results to give the unique decomposition of the cohomology rings of moment-angle manifolds associated to simplicial $2$-spheres, and explain how to use it to detect the cohomological rigidity problem of these moment-angle manifolds.

Abstract:We prove that the ideal in complex cobordism ring $\MU^*$ generated by the polynomial generators $S=(x_1, x_k, k\geq 3)$ of $c_1$-spherical cobordism ring $W^*$, viewed as elements in $\MU^*$ by forgetful map is prime. Using the Baas-Sullivan theory of cobordism with singularities we define a commutative complex oriented cohomology theory $\MU^*_S(-)$, complex cobordism modulo $c_1$-spherical cobordism, with the coefficient ring $\MU^*/S$. Then any $\Sigma\subseteq S$ is also regular in $\MU^*$ and therefore gives a multiplicative complex oriented cohomology theory $\MU^*_{\Sigma}(-)$. The generators of $W^*[1/2]$ can be specified in such a way that for $\Sigma=(x_k, k\geq 3)$ the corresponding cohomology is identical to the Abel cohomology, previously constructed in \cite{BUSATO}. Another example corresponding to $\Sigma=(x_k, k\geq 5)$ gives the coefficient ring of the universal Buchstaber formal group law after tensored by $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$, i.e., is identical to the scalar ring of the Krichever-Hoehn complex elliptic genus \cite{KR}, \cite{H}.

On symmetries of spheres in univalent foundations

Abstract:Working in univalent foundations, we investigate the symmetries of spheres, i.e., the types of the form $\mathbb{S}^n = \mathbb{S}^n$. The case of the circle has a slick answer: the symmetries of the circle form two copies of the circle. For higher-dimensional spheres, the type of symmetries has again two connected components, namely the components of the maps of degree plus or minus one. Each of the two components has $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ as fundamental group. For the latter result, we develop an EHP long exact sequence.

Cohomology of configuration spaces on punctured varieties

Abstract:In the theory of configuration spaces, "splitting" usually refers to the phenomenon that the configuration spaces on a manifold and those on its punctured version are closely related cohomologically. We prove a splitting theorem that is equivariant and mixed-Hodge-theoretic; both are new features in such results. As an application, we determine the generating function for the mixed Hodge numbers of the unordered configuration spaces of a multi-punctured elliptic curve.

Extending cycles to the coHochschild complex

Abstract:For the chains C of a simplicial complex, we provide an explicit chain map to the coHochschild complex cCH(C,C) of C. Applying this map to a fundamental cycle of a manifold, yields a non-degenerate homotopy inner product, i.e., a weak Calabi-Yau structure. This can be used, for example, as the starting point for defining string topology operations in an algebraic setting. We apply this to the case of the 2-sphere, extending an earlier construction from $\mathbb{Z}_2$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ coefficients.

Cohomology rings of the moduli of one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study on the cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{d,\chi}$ of semistable one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane. We introduce a set of tautological relations of geometric origin, including Mumford-type relations, and prove that their ideal is generated by certain primitive relations via the Virasoro operators. Using BPS integrality and the computational efficiency of Virasoro operators, we show that our geometric relations completely determine the cohomology rings of the moduli stacks up to degree 5. As an application, we verify the refined Gopakumar--Vafa/Pandharipande--Thomas correspondence for local $\mathbb{P}^2$ in degree 5. Furthermore, we propose a substantially strengthened version of the $P=C$ conjecture, originally introduced by Shen and two of the authors. This can be viewed as an analogue of the $P=W$ conjecture in a compact and Fano setting.

Abstract:In this paper, we compute the integral singular cohomology ring of homology split polyhedral product spaces and the singular cohomology algebra over a field of polyhedral product spaces. As an application, we give two polyhedral product spaces Z(K;X1,A1) and Z(K;X2,A2) such that the cohomology homomorphisms ik⁎:H⁎(Xk)→H⁎(Ak) induced by the inclusions are the same, but the cohomology rings of the two polyhedral product spaces are not isomorphic.
Sphere quantization of Higgs and Coulomb branches and Analytic Symplectic Duality

Abstract:We employ the protected sphere correlation functions of three-dimensional Super Conformal Field Theories with eight supercharges in order to define a quantization of their Higgs and Coulomb branches of vacua as real phase spaces. We also employ hemisphere correlation functions to define a quantization of certain real loci in the Higgs and Coulomb branches. Localization formulae and dualities applied to these quantizations result in a body of predictions about unitary representations of certain algebras, which may perhaps be understood as an ``analytic'' form of the symplectic duality program. In particular, the protected correlation functions in the class of theories denoted as $T[G]$ are naturally related to the theory of unitary representations of complex or real semi-simple Lie groups.
